BEARS FROM PAGE B1 beaten Maranatha Christian twice this year, 74-55 on Jan. 2 and 71-45 on Jan. 9. Senior TJ Barron said all the team has to do is continue what it’s been doing all season long. “They’ve got a good team, but both times we played them we played out of our heads,” Barron said. “As long as we play like we’ve been playing we can compete against anybody. It’s big playing a team that you already know everything about because we know they have some good guards, but we know if we shut them down we’ll be fine.” Barron leads the team with a scoring average of 16.8 points per game, one of three players scoring in double figures. Sophomore Desmond Sigler averages 13.3 while junior Lamel Sanders is the only player to average a double-double at 10.2 points and 10 rebounds a game. The team has been excelling offensively, averaging 61.6 points per game and shooting around 45 percent from the floor. Baker said the reason for the team’s success this year has been its unselfishness. “We’ve got talent, there’s no doubt about it, but the biggest asset to them is they really respect each other, their teamwork is great,” he explained. “They get the ball to the open person and nobody cares who scores. They don’t care who’s the high scorer as long as we score, that’s their philosophy.” The team is comprised

of two seniors (Barron and Aaron Pekuri), two juniors (Sanders and Daniel Barwick), four sophomores (Donzell Metz, Jeffrey Jones, Chris Leverette and Sigler) and one freshman (Grayson Dennis). The team has also gotten contributions from seventh-grader Kobe Barnett, eighth-graders Lawrence Fraser and Joshua DeWitt and sixth-grader Jonathan Fraser. “(Assistant head coach) Tom Cope, who is the JV head coach, has been instrumental in helping this team succeed this year,” Baker explained. ‘He helped bring up most of the younger boys who moved up from the JV squad that won last year’s state championship.” The Bears play a zone defense and rarely switch to man-to-man due to its depth and experience on the team. Baker said he likes his team’s chances to advance, but he has stressed the importance of playing better defense. “If we’re not outmanned, and that could be an issue, like I said depth is a big factor with us,” he explained. “But if we can play a game with anybody in the Christian association without getting in big foul trouble and losing one of our key players then, yes, I think we can compete with almost anybody.” “If we keep playing the way we’ve been playing all season,” was Sigler’s response when asked what it would take to win a state championship. “If we change anything that’s when we’ll go downhill, but if we just play it like another game we’ll just continue to win.”
