BROWN from Page A1 because you earned it for what you’ve done on the stage. And I am talking about the producers. They liked what they saw, and they rewarded me. And for that, I am grateful. They didn’t have to do it. They could have easily gone with a bigger name.� The poignant drama, which officially opened April 23, was greeted with critical praise and was twice extended. The play received four Tony Award nominations, including Tyson’s win in the best actress category. The 2013 revival of the classic will be distinguished for being the longest running Foote play ever on Broadway. “I think the cast and everybody with the play are very pleased with how this production has turned out,� Brown said. “It’s like you set out to build something, and you have this vision beforehand how you want it to turn out. Well, this play has turned out the way we wanted it to. And that’s because we as a unit came together really well. It’s been a true collaboration. We have
become a family. I just love everybody associated with the production.� Brown said the reviewers and audiences alike have been kind. “The reviews have been good,� he said. “A review can kill a play, and our reviews have been good enough. And what has been really great is the reaction we’ve had from the audiences. And what can you say about Cicely Tyson? She deserves all the praise she’s getting. She is amazing. It is just incredible when I think that I am on the same stage with Cicely Tyson.� Brown’s landing of a starring role on Broadway is already paying off in career opportunities. He has been offered a role in the NPR series August Wilson’s American Century Cycle. A group of actors and directors will stage live readings of 10 August Wilson plays, depicting black life — one for every decade in the 20th century. “I am hoping that we’ll be able to work it out so I can do this,� Brown said. “There are some big-time actors that have signed on to this project. I would like to be a part of it.� Brown said playing Broadway has some “pretty good� payoffs.

“I have met Hank Aaron,� he said. “That was a real thrill for me. And just this past weekend, I got a hug from Michelle Obama. Now, that’s a big deal.� Brown said he is intent on being grounded and not getting “too carried away� with his newfound success. “I don’t know what’s in the future,� he said. “I’m just enjoying this ride. I can’t sit and worry about things I can’t control. I don’t know what might happen or what might not happen in the future. I know great actors who’ve gone years without working. There are no guarantees in this business.� Brown was elected to the Lee County Arts Council’s Wall of Fame, and his portrait and biography are on the wall of the Opera House. “This is just awesome,� said Susan Thrasher, president of the arts council. “We are all just extremely proud of Leon Brown.� Brown has previously had roles in TV episodes of Law and Order and The Good Wife, and in movies Mo Better Blues (1990); Music of the Heart (1999), The Edge (1989), and Whirly Girl (2005). He was cast in the 2012 Steven Spielberg blockbuster Lincoln, but his scene was edited out of the movie.

Law enforcement closed a section of South Pike Road east of Main Street while a helicopter landed in the roadway to airlift the patient to Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia.
