SCISA held the Middle School Math Meet at Sumter County Civic Center on Oct. 27. Thomas Sumter Academy entered two teams in the meet and was represented by Ethan Lisenby, Lizzie Silvester, Sydney Kindsvater, Sammy Kessinger and Jacob Crowe on Team One. Preston Houser, Logan Oxendine, Clara Burnette, Lindsay Daniel and Logan Scruggs were members of Team Two. Team One came in ninth place out of 29 teams. The annual Legislative Breakfast sponsored by Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce was hosted at Central Carolina’s Health Sciences Center on Oct. 25. Local senators and representatives answered questions and spoke on Sumter issues. CCTC appreciates the dedication of the Legislative Delegation and is honored to host this meeting of delegates and community.

SIGNING DAY Central Carolina Scholars will hold its second-annual Signing Day at the main campus of CCTC at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Faculty and staff will be available to help guide incoming students through financial aid, registration, student life activities and other opportunities. There will be a signing ceremony for each student and his or her family, which includes a Central Carolina Scholars baseball cap, pen and contract.

Thomas Sumter Academy LOWER SCHOOL LIBRARY On Tuesday, kindergarten through fifth-grade students enjoyed a visit from author and illustrator Jonathan Miller. The students enjoyed hearing each of his four books in his Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund series: “Sammy’s Last Week in Charleston,” “Sammy on Safari,” “Sammy in Space” and “A History of Wonder Dachshunds.” He shared his original artwork and discussed the writing process. Miller has been featured on ETV, appeared in Vineyard Vines Summer Catalog, and his book was read on Lifetime’s hit series “Army Wives.” The Lower School Library wrapped up a successful Scholastic Book Fair, raising $2,300 to purchase new books for the library.

GRANDPARENTS DAY On Oct. 25, preschool and Lower School students welcomed many grandparents and grandfriends to the Hill. Guests were treated to a musical performance by the students followed by activities and classroom visitations. Activities included interviews, scavenger hunts and spending time reading together. Students made gifts for their guests to take home with them.

DISTRICT EMPLOYEE EARNS CERTIFICATION Lillarweise Seymore, Sumter School District administrative assistant to Director of Career and Technology Education Rita Beard and Literacy Director Dr. Cynthia Graham, completed the requirements for the Professional Standards Program Master Degree, Option II certificate. The certificate is the eighth level of a nine level program based on the completion of prescribed requirements in education, experience and professional activities. Seymore also completed the requirements for the Certified Educational Office Employee. She may use the letters CEOE following her name or signature. The National Association of Educational Office Professionals is a professional organization which provides opportunities through its Professional Standards Program for members to enhance their professional competencies through academic programs, conferences and institutes. This program is the only national certification program for educational office professionals.

SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK Sumter School District will be closed on Tuesday for Election Day. Many of the schools are used for voting, and this also gives the employees and voting-aged students an opportunity to cast their ballots. On Friday, the district office and all the schools will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday. — Mary B. Sheridan

USC Sumter SEMINAR SERIES CONTINUES WITH ‘THIS IS OUR TOWN’ USC Sumter’s Seminar Series continues Friday, Nov. 18, at noon in Room 127 of the Schwartz Building. Assistant professor of political science Dr. Damien K. Picariello will discuss the politics of the movie “High Noon” and another western film, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” in light of questions drawn from the history of political thought. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. This event is free and open to the community. — Misty Hatfield

Lee County School District BISHOPVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, faculty and staff at Bishopville Primary School wore pink. Pink ribbons were given to all faculty and staff as well. BPS will begin fundraising efforts for Relay for Life soon and encourages everyone to participate. Fifth-grade students represented Bishopville Primary School in the Lee Central High School Homecoming Parade on Oct. 22. BPS Teacher of the Year, Sheliaka Davis, rode in the parade while faculty, staff and students marched behind her in support. Red Ribbon Week began on Oct. 24. Activities promoting drug awareness and healthy life choices were planned for each day of the week. Activities included “tie day” to remind students to “tie up drugs,” crazy hair day, crazy sock day and ’70s and ’80s day.

WEST LEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

First Baptist Missionary Church announced its partnership with Crosswell Drive Elementary School at a Partners in Education celebration weekend. On Saturday, a community-wide celebration was held at Crosswell Park. The event featured fun, games, light refreshments and brief remarks. The goal was for the school and the church to introduce themselves to each other in order to build a long and trusting relationship. Twenty church members have already signed up for the Beyond the Bell after-school program. The celebration will continue today at 10:45 a.m. First Baptist Missionary Church will dedicate the church service to the Partners in Education initiative and invite the Crosswell students, parents and guardians, faculty and staff and others to attend with a goal of continuing to build a relationship. Pastor George P. Windley Jr. will present a gift from the church to Crosswell Drive Principal Anne McFadden. The Sumter Partners in Education program is a joint venture between

Benchmark testing is continuing in grades 2 through 5. Teachers are utilizing Mastery Connect, which is our computer-based student assessment system. Student data from reading, math, science and social studies will be gathered and analyzed by each teacher to help improve learning for students at West Lee Elementary School. West Lee Elementary School has recently received two active panel smart boards to enhance student learning. This new technology will allow students to interactively engage in learning. Students participated in a number of themed days to emphasize their commitment to staying drug-free during Red Ribbon Week. Deputy Justin Rufus spoke to classes about the importance of being drug free and staying in school. Students took a pledge against gun violence.
