OLIVER MCCOY JR. Oliver “Coot” McCoy Jr. was born on Jan. 13, 1930, in Sumter, a son of the late Oliver McCoy Sr. and Juanita Galloway McCoy. He departed this earthly life on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey. “Coot McCoy,” as he was so affectionately called by those who knew him well, was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He retired from the Sumter County public school system and a lifetime of farming. He was widely known in the community for his big personality, helpful spirit and mostly for his farming skills. Those who knew him well would also remember him when he tried his hand at being a barber. He was full of quiet humor with his stories, sayings and quick wit. He had a passion for farming and he used his skills to teach and share with those around him. He especially enjoyed his time spent on his tractor. Knowing the importance of a close connection with God, he joined St. Mark Seventh Day Adventist Church, presently Berea SDA Church, in 1954 as the result of a tent crusade conducted by Pastor Calvin Rock. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the church. During this time, he dutifully served as elder, deacon, church superintendent, Sabbath school teacher, and strongly supported the church ministries. In his continued service for his Lord, he loved to give Bible studies to anyone wanting to learn more about his Lord and Savior. He was conducting Bible studies in recent days, despite his failing health. His favorite Bible verse was “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven,” Matthew 18:3. His favorite quotes and what he lived by was “If a task has once begun, never leave it till it’s done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.” He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 65 years, Hattie Mae McCoy. He is survived by eight loving children: three daughters, Barbara McCoy and Sandra McCoy, both of Columbia, Maryland, and Carol McCoy of New Carrollton, Maryland; and five sons, Charles Muhammad of Sumter, Allen (April) McCoy of Columbia, Oliver McCoy III of Sumter, James Lee McCoy of Sumter and Jerome McCoy of Charlotte. He is also survived by two sisters, Geneva Ervin of Sumter and Shirley Hawkins of Baltimore; and a host of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
