Meet the winners of the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards
2018 Readers’ Choice Awards is a publication of

or the 14th year, we counted on the community to identify the best of Beaufort, and the results were swift and decisive. This year just under 17,000 votes were cast in The Beaufort Gazette’s Readers’ Choice Awards — a survey of the best people and businesses in northern Beaufort County. We encouraged people to pre-nominate individuals and companies that they felt best deserved the recognition, and we then created a database of nominees. More than 1,700 people voted in the contest. Voting took place online, with participants selecting their favorites from the list of nominees. Many businesses used Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites to encourage their fans to participate in the Readers Choice contest and support them in the ballot box. There was no end to the creative ways people worked to drum up support and build awareness — kudos to the creativity displayed. Inside this special section, you’ll find a list of all the categories and winners for northern Beaufort County. Southern Beaufort County had its own Readers Choice contest, and those results are published today in The Island Packet. Voting ballots were available at www.islandpacket.com and www.beaufortgazette.com. The 150-plus categories included everything from best Realtor to best grocery store to best pizza. We’ve printed a list of The Beaufort Gazette’s winners on pages 12-13. All voting was conducted online, and people could vote once per day during the 10-day voting window in May. After we tabulated the results, we contacted the winners, and some of them decided to celebrate their success in this section. Many winning businesses are thanking their clients in this section by offering special promotions, so check out their messages. All of our winners will receive an official Readers’ Choice Award that they can display in their business for all their patrons to see. Watch for next year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, and be sure to cast your ballot for your local favorites.

Horses help bring history to life Learning about Beaufort’s antebellum history is more fun aboard a horse-drawn carriage while listening to the narration of professional guides and the clippty-clop of draft horses. “Our horses easily walk down the streets taking passengers back in time under moss-covered oak trees to enjoy the architecture and stories of the past,” said Rose White, owner of Southurn Rose Buggy Tours. Q: You were a top vote-getter for Best Historic Tour Company. What do you credit for this overwhelming success? It is the quality and passion (our workers) put into their tours, as well as their individual personalities, that we have been voted the No. 1 Historical Tour Company in Beaufort for the last 11 years. Q: I’ve never been on a carriage tour. What are some of the things I’ll see? You will learn about Beaufort’s Civil War history, and see Antebellum and Victorian architecture as well as Hollywood movie sites. Our guides mix history, folk tales, and even Hollywood movie facts to bring you into the charm of old Beaufort. Q:
Q: How many carriage tours do you offer each day and how many horses do you have? Tours last about 50 minutes and leave frequently from the Waterfront Park area between 9:40 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday tours begin leaving at noon. We have 10 horses; Paul Newman, Rocky, Jake, The Cisco Kid, Jim, Butch Cassidy, Duke, Gilbert, Max, and Phillippe. Q:

Our family has strong ties to Beaufort — I’m a Beaufort native and Jake grew up here and returned after serving in the Marine Corps. I think the most important lesson we learned is to come up with a plan and then be prepared to be flexible, and change it as many times necessary. We also learned we’re more persistent than we thought, which definitely helped us keep going even when things were tough. There’s something for everyone on, off stage If you’ve never been to an event at The University of South Carolina-Beaufort Center for the Arts, what are you waiting for? “You are going to have a wonderful time, and plan on coming back. We have something for everyone,” said Bonnie Hargrove, director for the Center of the Arts. Get to know the center that was voted Best Live Entertainment Venue.
Q: What is it about USCB Center for the Arts that makes it such a great place to see a show? The center has been the cultural hub for Beaufort County for more than 30 years, housing the University of South Carolina-Beaufort’s Chamber Music Series, Beaufort Theatre Company, and countless performances of internationally acclaimed performing artists. We have a friendly, professional atmosphere and a large diversity of shows along with affordable ticket prices. Q:
Q: You host a variety of events on and off the stage throughout the year. What types of programs can guests look forward to? The center encourages cultural and economic development by host-
ing everything from art exhibits to theatrical events and concerts. Our mainstage shows range from comedy, musicals, musical tributes, cirque shows, family shows, big bands, and international music. We also host a movie night every Monday at 7 p.m. We are always expanding our offerings. The theater is in use more than 235 days of the year with rehearsals, shows, Met Opera live in HD, movies, meeting, presentations, community events, dance recitals, and festivals. It seems there’s always something great taking place.

Q: Tell us more about the joys of children’s theater. What are some valuable lessons young folks learn? Children’s Theatre is a great opportunity for aspiring actors to learn
the craft of acting in an setting that is encouraging, fun and accepting. Children Theatre give the young actors a gift of confidence, ability to speak in front of a crowd, great team building skills, and so much more. Q: How can people show their support for the arts? We do not receive any state funding and must raise money for just about everything — shows, marketing, staff, supplies, costumes, sets, and instructors. Folks can help show their support by purchasing tickets, or becoming a sponsor or donor. Q:
