SET TING THE TONE

Money raised for scholarship to honor Mineola FD volunteer BY K AT I E F E N T O N Andrew Desiderio, a 21-yearold student at Binghamton University who grew up in Williston Park, died in a hiking accident on April 12. He planned to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in economics. Boy Scout leader Steven Grosskopf, who knew Desiderio as a member of Mineola’s Troop 45, said he was hiking in Utah with friends when he slipped and fell off a cliff. “He loved the outdoors,” Grosskopf said. “He loved it out there, climbing the mountains, climbing through the valleys and everything, and the whole allure of the West was something that he really enjoyed. Unfortunately, it became his demise, because he loved it so much that he and a bunch of guys on spring break from college decided they weren’t going to go to Florida, where all the lunatics weren’t wearing masks and

going out to all the bars. They decided that they were going to hike, and they went to hike in the mountains in Utah. He got too close to an edge and he fell off a cliff. It was a horrible accident, but he was a great guy. He died doing what he loved to do.” A funeral service was held for Desiderio on Tuesday at the Church of St. Aidan in Williston Park. “He was an amazing kid, and today we had the funeral,” Grosskopf said. “There were hundreds of people in attendance at St. Aidan’s in Williston Park, just to show how much people really cared for him and how special he was. He really was a great young man and a loss to society and humanity in general.” Desiderio was also a volunteer firefighter, joining the Mineola Fire Department’s junior program in 2013 before becoming a full member and earning the title of junior lieutenant in 2016. His unit, Truck 2, paid tribute to Desiderio in an Instagram post last Wednesday. Continued on Page 37
