Herricks students advance in math contest Herricks Middle School and High School students participated in the American Mathematics Competitions in November and February, respectively. The middle school had 367 participants in the AMC 8 event, while 69 high school students took part in AMC 10 and 74 entered AMC 12. Three Herricks students placed in the top one percent. This accomplishment was achieved by Christopher Lo and Rushikesh Patel in AMC 10 and Alan Chen in AMC 12. Chen advanced to the next level of the competition, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.
Uttsav Patel placed in the top five percent for AMC 10, while Kelly Yu and Brian Zhao did so in AMC 12. Rachel Won was among the top five percent in the AMC 8, where Jeff Chen, Rhea Rasquinha, Aarya Agarwal, Arpith Vinod and Benjamin Shim were also announced as high performers. The American Mathematics Competitions are conducted by the Mathematics Association of America with the goal of strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth. The competitions goal is to identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics.
McDonald’s art show World Quest Herricks High School entered a team to compete in the Tri-State Area Regional World Quest competition, held at Stuyvesant High School on March 16. This competition is designed to challenge its players on their knowledge of international affairs, geography, culture and history. The Herricks students placed third among other teams from Long Island, as well as those from New Jersey and New York City. Sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association and the World Affairs Council, this competition involved 100 high-level and obscure trivia questions on current affairs.
Macaroni night at Mineola Mineola High School hosted its fifth annual “MINNeola Macaroni Making a Difference” Community Pasta Dinner to benefit the Mary Brennan INN. The Inn, the largest soup kitchen on Long Island, serves over 400 lunches daily to its guests. Faculty, staff, students and their families donated all of the food, beverages and desserts served and students and faculty prepared and served the meal. Residents from all over the community, including senior citizens, junior firefighters, sports teams and district students and families showed their support
and generosity by attending the event held in the high school cafeteria. This year, volunteers served over 400 dinners and were able to raise more than $2,750. In addition, many guests donated items, including towels, toiletries, clothing and canned food, which were given to the INN. “Mineola is truly and caring and generous community, and the students and their families are leaders in the efforts to combat hunger and homelessness on Long Island,” INN Executive Director Jean Kelly said.
Students from Meadow Drive and Hampton Street Schools in the Mineola school district had artwork chosen for the inaugural Art Contest Ceremony at a local McDonald’s restaurant. The contest highlighted the talent of the youngest Mineola students who were judged by the McDonald’s staff for first-, second- and thirdplace prizes. Art teacher Jaclyn Manouvrier-Altman selected one artist from each grade. Student artists representing Meadow Drive School were Deirdre Steiner, Liam Yanes (second-place winner) and Nathan Ren. From Hampton Street School are Victoria Dacosta (first-place winner), Naya Lameirao and Aidan Paul (third-place winner). The artwork is currently on display until the end of the year at the McDonald’s Restaurant at 60 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola.
