SCHOOL NEWS

Mineola pre-K registration Feb. to May Registration for pre-kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year in the Mineola school district is from Feb. 1 to May 5, 2017 and will take place at the Central Registration Office, located on the second floor of the Willis Avenue School at 121 Jackson Ave. in Mineola. All parents of eligible children are encouraged to register their children during this time. Parents are asked to contact the district registrar, Gloria Romero, in January to schedule an appointment. She can be reached at gromero@mineola.k12.ny.us or at 516-237-2031.

Once the appointment has been scheduled, parents can pick up a registration packet at the Central Office or request Romero mail one to them. Please have all the forms in the registration packet completely filled out, all necessary forms notarized and all the documentation required on hand for the meeting with the registrar. This will ensure a complete and smooth registration process. For the 2017-2018 school year, the Mineola school district plans to have a full-day universal pre-kindergarten program conducted by Harbor Child Care lo-

cated at 121 Jackson Ave. (formerly the Willis Avenue School). If the New York State Education Department uses the same guidelines as they used this past year, the Mineola prekindergarten program will remain the same, which is a full-day universal prekindergarten program for 54 students conducted by Harbor Child Care (chosen by lottery) and a 2.5-hour, five-day program (morning or afternoon) for all other students at Hampton Street School or Meadow Drive School. Every student whose registration for pre-kindergarten is completed by Friday,

May 5, 2017, will be included in the lottery on May 10, 2017. Registration for kindergarten through 12th grade will continue to take place throughout the year. Please call Romero for information and for an appointment. All children must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. Pre-kindergarten children must be 4 years old and kindergarten children must be 5 years old by Dec. 31, 2017. Please note students currently enrolled in pre-kindergarten do not need to register for kindergarten.]

Student wins Students win math award service award

Mineola High School junior Sofia Guirola has been named a local winner in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. As president of the school’s Student Service Center, she is now nominated for a state-level award. Created in 1995, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program recognizes middle and high school students for their outstanding service to others, for making a difference on a local, statewide or national level, and for inspiring others to contribute to their communities.

At the Dec. 1 meeting of the Mineola Union Free School District’s Board of Education, Anushka Patel, Ankita Patel, Jeremiah Florestal and Alvin Tsai were recognized for their acknowledgement as “Young Scholars of Mathematics” from the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students program at SUNY/College of Old

Westbury. Selection by the institute implies that a student is among the top one-tenth of 1 percent in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade. They were four of only approximately 50 students across Long Island who were chosen for the honor.

Nicole currently serves as a student leader of the Baseball Challengers Program where she is responsible for coordinating players to volunteers every session, running drills and

special programs and traveling to baseball fields around Long Island with the players to mentor them. Both Jonathan and Nicole participated in the UJA Federation’s Supplies for Success Program, filling backpacks for thousands of disadvantaged children. Jonathan’s community service trips included volunteering in Nashville Tennessee working with the homeless population and with children with pediatric cancer and their families. He helped to clean up local parks and beaches in Costa Rica. Both Jonathan and Nicole worked with children who had been affected by the Middle East conflict and with Ethiopian immigrants in Israel, through the Koby Mandell Foundation.
