Autism Awareness Day event The 9th annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, kicking off a whole month of activities for National Autism Awareness Month. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate with unique fundraising and awarenessraising events. Roslyn Public Schools is celebrating, too, with various activities scheduled during the first week of April. Roslyn SEPTA and the High School Autism Awareness Club sold T-shirts with proceeds going to Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism and are encouraging people to wear their Autism Awareness T-shirts and “Light it up Blue” to show support during the month of April. Additionally, profits will assist with travel training and trips for students in Roslyn’s Autism Summer Program. Attilio’s Pizza is joining the celebration by

donating 15% of the proceeds from each meal purchased on April 3 and April 4 to Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism to support Roslyn families. Patrons just need to say during the hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. that they are ordering for Autism Awareness. On April 5 Dr. Darlene Magito McLaughlin, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst will host a “Cafeteria Talk” about Autism in the Roslyn High School cafeteria in the morning along with representatives from the high school Autism Awareness Club. There will be a Disability Awareness presentation by Deborah Adler Creative Arts Therapy P.C. for the children at East Hills School on April 6 and at Harbor Hill School on April 7. East Hills Elementary

school will be hosting a “Touch a Truck” event for the RAISE, RISE and SOAR programs on April 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Roslyn Fire Departments will help desensitize the students through interaction with the fire hose, sirens, fire trucks, an ambulance, firefighter gear and equipment. During that week, the Heights school will be sensitizing students to the unique needs of their friends and peers. Brady Rhymer, who is dedicated to bringing awareness of each person’s strengths and challenges, will be performing on Friday, April 7, singing songs from his Autism Awareness CD. During the week, Heights will also be having a “mini march” to show support of the many children and their families who live with the challenges of autism each and every day.
