A fire destroyed this house on Bridge Road in Manhasset last Saturday.

A Bridge Road residence was destroyed by fire early Saturday despite the efforts of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department to contain the blaze. No injuries were reported. The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department dispatched Companies 1,2,3 and an ambulance unit to 94 Bridge Road shortly after midnight, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Capt. Lee Gense said. When the firefighters arrived, the family had already exited the house and a neighbor was trying to extinguish the flames with a garden house. “The fire was well under way when the engines arrived,” Genser said. Because the fire had already moved to multiple parts of the house, the fire department focused on the second floor, which was said to be the origin of the fire, Genser said. The first two engines stretched two hoses into the interior of the home, but were
forced to evacuate because parts of the roof fell near the front of the home, he said. Following the roof’s collapse, he said, the engines set up a master stream, relaying multiple hose lines around the exterior of the house. The fire department requested back up, summoning companies 4 and 5. Companies 4 and 5 set up another master stream on Park Woods Road, hoping to assist in the extinguish the fire. At 2:24 a.m., the fire was under control, but engines continued cooling the property, staying on scene until 4:38 a.m. Aiding the already many dispatched units, the Port Washington Fire Department was on scene, acting on standby. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office is still investigating the cause of the fire, but believes the fire started in the attic and extended down into the second floor, resulting in the roof’s collapse. “It was tough,” Genser said. “All we can do is call this a loss for the night.”
