Herricks outlast Port Washington 1-0 By G r E G ory GiaCoNELLi The Herricks Highlanders defeated the Port Washington Vikings 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. Alan Ponieman scored the lone goal off a 30 yard free kick. Herricks played a strong defensive game in the second half to hold on for the victory. “In the past, we gave up a lot of goals in the second half,” Herricks head coach Sean Johnsen said. “We knew that we had to work extra hard as a unit defensively. All 11 guys were on top of their game in the second half and that’s how we got the victory.” The first half had both sides fighting for possession of the ball with very few scoring opportunities on either end. Ponieman gave Herricks the lead with 12:54 remaining in the first half, scoring on a kick that curved up and over the head of Port Washington goalkeeper Alexander Vasquez. After the goal, Ponieman said he couldn’t even describe how he scored. “It was placed pretty far,” Ponieman said. “I was in a little disbelief because those are goals that you see the top players score. I’m just so thankful that it happened to me this time.” With 7:20 left to play in the first half, Port Washington defender Ronaldo Ayala Soriano committed a foul, which resulted red card. In the second half, Port Washington dominated possession of the ball while playing with a man down but failed to generate any offense. Port Washington head coach Don Fish said his team didn’t work hard enough in the attacking third. “We didn’t put a lot of pressure,” Fish said. “Their defenders blocked a couple
herricks’ Nelson Wu and Port Washington’s anthony Quinteros battle for the ball of shots in front of the goal. We didn’t do much in the box, and were too slow to cross as they doubled us up.” After earning a clean sheet, Johnsen said his team will look for consistency going forward. “This is what we start with,” Johnsen said. “We have to make sure we build on this effort and continue to get the results that we need.” Weekly High School Boys Soccer Scores Monday Sept. 12 Wantagh defeated Floral Park 1-0.
