Knights of Columbus seek new home at NHP church Continued from Page 2 clergy did not return a request for comment. A Diocese of Rockville Centre spokesman said there was no further information available. The Marcus Avenue building drew interest from caterers, restaurants, churches and other “specialty groups,” said Andy Dorman, a senior director with Hunt Corporate Services, the realty firm that brokered the deal. The sale also included furniture, fixtures and other equipment, he said. “Anytime you put a property on the market that has a history of pub-

lic use and parking to go with it, it’s valuable,” Dorman said in a news release. Aldad wanted to use the building as a catering hall, but said he would first have to get the zoning changed and get a special use permit from the Town of North Hempstead, he said. Aldad knew he would have to rezone the property when he bought it, he said, and he is still deciding whether to keep or resell the building. “If it quacks like a duck and it looks like a duck, it’s a duck,” Aldad said. “Call it whatever you want, but

it’s a commercial building.” The Knights of Columbus had special permission from the town to use the hall, built in 1963, as a meeting space despite its residential zoning, Aldad said. A town spokeswoman, Carole Trottere, said the town has no record of any official agreement with the Knights of Columbus. Rezoning the property would take up to four months, she said. Aldad said he will continue leasing the 2035 Hillside Ave. building to Nicholas Virgilio, the chiropractor who practices there.

veteran, took the smoke detectors not for his own benefit but because he disagreed with how a program to install them in senior citizens’ homes was being handled, a move that was “selfish at best,” McCormack wrote. The judge called the fire department “malicious and petty” for calling the police in July 2012 when fire officials learned Dolan and his son, Michael Dolan Jr., took the smoke detectors, which the Nassau County

Fire Museum had donated. Criminal charges against the Dolans were later dropped. The department should have handled the issue internally, McCormack wrote. “Regarding malice or selfishness, the court sees in the record of this entire matter selfishness on all sides,” he wrote. “... However, it was the (fire department) that showed malice.” The fire district attorney, Joseph Frank, declined to comment. Fire Commis-

Fire department reinstates Dolan after state court ruling Continued from Page 1 the court sent the case back to McCormack to decide the penalty. “We are overjoyed for our client,” Rick Ostrove, Dolan’s attorney, said in an email. “The judge easily found that department’s actions were malicious.” McCormack’s ruling faulted both Dolan and the fire department, but found the fire department ultimately overstepped its bounds.
