Valedictorian to class: don’t forget world’s ‘crises’ by C h r i s A da m s In his address to the Floral Park Memorial High School Class of 2016, the valedictorian, Mahesh Tiwari, celebrated with his peers the achievement of completing another step in their education, but also noted the responsibility that lies ahead. He said this generation will confront issues such as climate change, threatened global security and the stripping of natural resources.

“As an optimist, I would like to think that humanity will always find a way, but as a pragmatist, I know that the solutions to the world’s challenges come only with hard work and collaboration,” Tiwari said. “Therefore on this day of our graduation, let us commit to collaborating, solving these crises head on.” During Saturday’s 59th annual commencement ceremony for at Hofstra University, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sen. Jack Martins gave speeches be-

fore the students, both congratulating the 244 graduates on their accomplishments. Martins said speaking at the ceremony was bittersweet, as his time serving as senator comes to an end. “This is the last time I’ll be able to have the opportunity to address you as a senator because I am not running for reelection this year,” Martins said. “But it has been an honor to represent this great community.” Martins, who is running for Congress

in the Third District, said he’s been able to see graduation from different perspectives, as senator addressing the Floral Park students, and as a parent seeing his own daughter graduate from high school last year. He listed some rules for the students to live by.
