Top grads encourage class to strive for change By N o a h M a n s k a r Roby Daniel once thought public speaking was his greatest fear, but the New Hyde Park Memorial High School valedictorian told his fellow graduates he later learned he was more afraid of not making an impact on the world. “I’m afraid of leaving this earth without giving back to it,” Daniel said at the school’s commencement ceremony on Sunday. “I’m afraid of not being able to say I know that I left my legacy and I’m proud of it.” No matter the circumstances or the size of their impact, New Hyde Park Memorial’s 277 graduates should continue striving to change the world around them, Daniel and other students said during the ceremony at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
“We owe it to ourselves to build a bright and successful future,” class president Daniella Malliae said. “... We will make it big. We will create change.” A drive for change is “a fundamental characteristic” of the class of 2016, Student Council president Kyle Bangug said. For example, Bangug and other students worked with Sewanhaka school district administrators to change the district’s school lunch program to better suit students’ needs. The graduates should take the lessons they learned in New Hyde Park into the future and make a tangible impact on the world around them that goes beyond social media, Daniel said. “Showing solidarity is definitely important to getting through hard times,” he said. “But at the same time, though, we Continued on Page 60
