Herricks class hailed for sense of ‘empathy’ By N o a h M a n s k a r Herricks High School students care deeply about their community, as evidenced by the recent walk they put on in memory of a student who died from leukemia, school Superintendent Fino Celano said. But the sight of 100 seniors sharing a “tearful group hug” showed Celano the
students also care deeply for each other, he said. That strong sense of empathy and compassion outside the classroom defines the class of 2016 in particular, teachers and district administrators told a crowd of hundreds at the high school’s commencement ceremonies Thursday night. “I started to have even more hope
for the future when I realized when you acted with instinct, you acted with empathy,” Stephanie Nelson, an English teacher, said during the ceremony on the high school’s football field. Nelson, along with valedictorian Matthew Cohen and salutatorian Ranzhounan Chen, encouraged the 353 graduates to hold onto the lessons they learned at Herricks as they navigate their changing
lives in a changing world. Cohen said he has often been called “insane” for the amount of work he does. But that “insanity” and drive make all Herricks students “neither standard nor common,” he said. Herricks’ diversity also sets it apart, a graduating senior, Ashwin Viswanathan, said, quoting the definition of “Herricks” Continued on Page 59
