new teachers arrive in Great neck At the orientation held prior to the opening of the Great Neck Public Schools, new staff were welcomed by Board of Education Trustee Susan Healy, Superintendent Teresa Prendergast, Assistant Superintendents Joseph Hickey and Stephen Lando, new Great Neck Teachers Association President James Daszenski, new Association of Supervisors and Administrators President Sharon Applebaum and other administrators. Heather Sweet is the new assistant principal at E.M. Baker School. She replaces Jeffrey Ryvicker, who was recently appointed the school superintendent of the Quogue School District. Newly hired teachers at E.M. Baker School include: Douglas Kuveke (special education), Lisa Noonan (special education), Stephanie Schmidt (grade 4), Kimberly Sieh (grade 4), and Melissa Weibman (grade 5). New teachers at J.F. Kennedy School: Christine Deaner (special education), Kristen Milici (special education), Vanessa Nilsen, (special education), and Kelly Rosario (special education). Barbara Manzi is a new special education teacher at the North Shore Hebrew Academy and Mary Terriberry is a new prekindergarten teacher at Parkville School. New teachers at Saddle Rock School are Rachel Barrer (reading), Jennifer Kerr
(speech therapist; also at North Middle), and Deanna Phillips (special education). Thomas Hahn is a new English teacher at North High. New teachers at North Middle School are Melissa Block (Languages Other Than English–LOTE), Alexandra D’Angelo (spe-
cial education), Jennifer Kerr (speech therapist; also at Saddle Rock), Jeryl Lehmuller (special education), and Tracy Segal (guidance dept head). New teachers at South High School are Morgan Burk (physical education/health), Lillian Hsiao (English as a New Language–
ENL), and Daniel Shadock (mathematics). New teachers at South Middle School include Yanxia Chen (LOTE), Jessica Hemmerdinger (special education), Lindsay Manno (special education), Sandra Neuwirth (LOTE), and Catherine Sagevick (mathematics).
Community Education nine students named offers new classes all-state musicians Great Neck Public Schools Community Education welcomes the community to another season of exciting classes. Registration for the fall session is ongoing, and many classes begin soon. It also looks forward to seeing the community at its second annual Open House Week, Monday, Sept.19–Friday, Sept. 23. Come visit the classes offered that week, at no fee, with no pre-registration necessary. Meet the instructors, see the facilities and learn what is right here in the community. This is a wonderful opportunity to join in a Fitness class: Mindful Meditation, Aerobics, Zumba, Standing Vinyasa Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Body Workout, Movement for Those with Parkinson’s, and more. If you enjoy dancing, there’s Jazz, Ballet, Cre-
ative and Classical Dance, Ballroom Dancing, and Line Dance. Try your hand at Fine Arts and Crafts with: Pottery, Stone Sculpting, Painting, Drawing, Pastels, Printmaking, Jewelry Making, and Silversmithing. Perhaps you’d like to experience the Foreign Languages we offer: Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Yiddish. Learn about Games and Hobbies, including Bridge, Canasta, and Mah Jongg, or participate in a Writing class or a Book Group. Nine musicians from Great Neck North and South High Schools have been selected for the prestigious and very competitive 2016 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Conference, to be held in Rochester from Dec. 1 to 4. In addition, nine students were named Alternates for the event. North High School All-State music students are: Zachary Lee (flute, Symphonic Band), Katie Tropp-Levy (alto II, Women’s Chorus), and Isabel Yang (violin, Symphony Orchestra). Alternates are (all violinists): Rachel Berkower, Ronald Li, and Matthew Weinstein. These students are taught by Janine Robinson, vocal, and Joseph Rutkowski, instrumental. Neil Saggerson is fine & performing arts department head. South High All-State music students are Zhengkuan (Kenny) Huang (violin, String Orchestra), Joo Eun (Melody)
Kang (violin, Symphony Orchestra), Kimbery Lu (viola, Symphony Orchestra), Maximilian Manicone (jazz guitar, Instrumental Jazz), Christine Suh (violin, Symphony Orchestra), and Asia Zhang (violin, String Orchestra). Alternates are: Glory Chung (violin 11), Suzie Fendt (soprano I, 11), Lucia Geng (flute 12), Kathryn Lam (violin 12), Patrick Shen (tenor II, 11), and Michelle Xing (bassoon 11). These students are taught by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/instrumental music teacher, and Pamela Levy, vocal. At the All-State Conference, sponsored by NYSSMA, the state’s finest student musicians will perform together in various ensembles. Thousands of students auditioned for this competition last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state.
