Temple Emanuel to host Selihot concert The officers and members of the board of Temple Emanuel of Great Neck invite the Great Neck and surrounding community to attend its traditional Selihot concert and service on Saturday, Sept. 24. The event will begin in the synagogue ballroom at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception. Then, members and guests will move into the sanctuary where they will hear the voices of Cantor Bernard Fitch and cantorial soloists of the Emanuel Choir: Maria Whisenand, Erin Kemp, Ronald Morton and Thomas Stallone. In addition, there will be ensemble playing and accompaniment by Stanislav Nikolov, violinist; Stepan Dadourian, flutist; and music director, organist and pianist, David Graf. This year, the concert, entitled “Love’s in the Music for the Holy Days,” will include a varied and entertaining program of solos, duets and ensembles from opera, operetta

and American musical theater by composers from Handel to Johann Strauss and Lerner and Loewe. Immediately following the concert, Rabbi Robert S. Widom, Rabbi Ronnie Kehati, Cantor Bernard Fitch and the Emanuel Choir, accompanied by David Graf at the organ, will offer the Selihot Service, concluding at 10 p.m. with a coffee hour. Bernard Fitch, tenor, who chants the Holy Day prayers each year at Emanuel, is well known to opera-lovers, particularly those who subscribe to the Met. The officers and members of the board extend a special invitation to those who are not presently affiliated with a synagogue and would like to learn more about Temple Emanuel. Admission is free, but Temple Emanuel requests that you RSVP by calling 516-482-5701 so that it can plan accordingly. Temple Emanuel of Great Neck is located at 150 Hicks Lane.

Ra honors seven North Shore women Over the weekend, state Assemblyman Edward Ra (R-Franklin Square) hosted his 2016 Women of Distinction event at the Albertson VFW Post 5253. On Saturday, Sept. 17, friends and family gathered at the annual event to honor seven women from the 19th Assembly District who were recognized for their hard work and dedication to making their communities a better place. “It’s a great honor to have these women live and work in our communities,” Ra said. “Each year, it is important that we take time to let them know how

much we appreciate all they do to improve their families, communities and careers. Whether it’s in education, running a business or doing humanitarian work, they go above and beyond to make our communities great places to work and live.” This year’s honorees include Rebecca Neuhedel of Garden City, Cristina Babolcsay of Franklin Square, Barbara Ruggiero of Garden City, Danielle Messina of Garden City Park, Nancy Benchimol of Glen Head, Maureen McEnerney of Garden City and Nina Harris of Albertson.
