North High to hold chamber recital Great Neck North High School will hold its Chamber Music Recital on Wednesday, April 13, in the school auditorium at 35 Polo Road. Please note that the start time has been changed to 7:30 p.m. from 7 p.m., as appears in the school district calendar. Students will perform under the direction of music instructors Janine Robinson and Joseph Rutkowski. Robinson will also play the piano. The evening will include 12 pieces by noted composers, including Mozart, Milhaud, Handel, Beethoven, Tartini, Hovhaness, Szalowski, Brahms, John Denver, Schubert, and Murray Houliff. For the second year in a row, Houliff, a colleague of Rutkowski’s, plans to be present at the recital. Middle schools succeed at math competition Great Neck South Middle School’s Mathcounts team took Fourth Place and North Middle School’s team took Tenth Place at the recent New York State Mathcounts Competition. Mathcounts teams from both schools earned the top positions at the Nassau County Mathcounts Competition, qualifying them to compete at the state level. At the County Competition, South Middle copped first place and North Middle took second. North Middle’s Mathcounts team members are: Alice Liu, Marcus Pang, Adam Tsou, Kaiming Zhang, and Michelle Zeng. Faculty coaches are Zachary Boyt, mathematics department head, and William Giannone, mathematics teacher. South Middle’s team members are: Yian (Tessie) Dong, YiLin Ge, Jin Won Kim, David Kogan, and Anthony Zhan. South Middle’s coach is Diane Hodgson, mathematics teacher. “Mathcounts Competition Series is the only competition program of its kind, with live, in-person events in all 50 states,” Boyt said. “Students engage in exciting, ‘bee-style’ contests competing against and alongside other bright, motivated students.”
