The Manhasset High School Marching Band performs its 2015 Star Wars show at the USBands A Class Championship Competition at Delaware State University.

Manhasset band competes in championship The Manhasset High School Marching Band completed its fall 2015 competitive season by participating in the USBands A Class Championship competition at Delaware State University in Dover, DE on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015. Earning a season-high score of 91.45, the band performed their Star Wars show. After participating in four other competitions at ven-

ues in New Jersey and the Manhasset High School invitational competition at Manhasset High School on Oct. 4, the band capped it’s season at this championship event that included 14 Group 1A bands from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Massachusetts. The band is led by Randy Knudsen, Manhasset High School Director of Bands, assistant directors Hector Minaya (Manhasset Middle School), David Van Boxel (Munsey

Park School), and Sandra Baskin (Manhasset Middle School, retired) and student drum majors and conductors Jeffrey Chin and Michelle Marcisak, who are both seniors. The band includes 33 students who play instruments, march, and twirl flags in choreographed routines. The band will play next in the Memorial Day Parade in May 2016.

Port students artwork featured at conference Congratulations to the student-artists of the Port Washington Union Free School District whose artwork was featured at the New York State School Boards Association’s annual conference held at the Sheraton Manhattan in October. Co-sponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association, the student art exhibit included a special reception for families and guests. Artwork from students throughout the state was featured at the event. Port Washington’s participants were: Edward Condon — “Sunset,” chalk pastel Diego Espinoza — “Beware of the Dog,” colored pencil (Miranda Best –Teacher) Joseph Green — “Collograph Print,” printing ink Sabrina Grossman — “Still Life,” acrylic (Daphine Harkins –Teacher) Jacob Chang — “Architecture in Silhouette,” pastel (Lisa Heath – Teacher) Pamela Hidalgo — “Untitled,” inkjet print Kayla Shafkowitz — “Ab,” solar etching (Kris Murphy – Teacher) Brett Cohen — “Animals at Night,” collage Faith Fahmy — “Self-Portrait,” oil pastel (Marilyn Turtz-Friedman – Teacher) “We are proud of how these students have represented the Port Washington School District’s art department with their creativity and hard work,” said Port Washington Director of Creative Arts Kevin Scully. “They serve as role models to their fellow students.”
