Welcome

Every student will impact the world in his or her own way. The world is waiting. Choose a school that offers an exciting global community with a shared commitment to academic excellence.

Welcome to The International School of Minnesota (ISM), a private college-preparatory day and boarding school housed on a beautiful 55-acre campus in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Our students in Preschool through Grade 12 receive a premier education within a vibrant multicultural community universally committed to academic excellence. It’s in this inclusive, collaborative environment that our students are challenged to grow in intellect, character, and global understanding as they prepare to impact the larger world. The benefits of an ISM education last a lifetime and open up a world of opportunity. You’re invited to join the ISM family and set your child on a path to success as a productive global citizen.

A commitment to academic excellence Academic excellence is at the heart of what we do at ISM, a goal we share with every student and family. While our academic emphasis and talented faculty help establish a superior environment for student achievement, it’s our relationship with the SABIS® School Network, a global network of schools first established in 1886, that differentiates ISM from standard college-prep schools.

The International School of Minnesota is a proud member of the SABIS® School Network, recognized for its proven global curriculum and empowering Student Life Organization®.

An extraordinary, proven, global foundation for learning At the academic core of The International School of Minnesota is the SABIS® Educational System, a proven curriculum taught around the world that outlines a remarkable plan for student success. Starting in Preschool and continuing until graduation, our students are steeped in math, science, English, world languages and cultures, social studies, music, fine arts, and physical education. Students in Preschool through Grade 3 receive on-site swimming lessons in our heated, indoor pool, helping instill a lifelong habit of physical fitness. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to educate students with diverse cultural backgrounds. Our approach prepares them to enter colleges and universities around the world and helps them succeed in life.

In every subject and at every grade level, our academic approach provides a special structure that promotes mastery of essential concepts. This proven and highly effective system engages students through a dynamic and collaborative teaching methodology. Our teachers—knowledgeable and passionate facilitators of learning—initiate the system as they introduce concepts to students and engage them in instruction that hones critical thinking and logical reasoning abilities. At critical points in the learning process, the classroom is divided into smaller groups, enabling student prefects to reinforce and confirm learning. In this fluid process, our students have the opportunity to explore their understanding, seek clarification, and receive reinstruction as needed—all as part of an engaged community of learners.

The instructional process is supported by regularly scheduled assessments that measure student progress and help identify areas for review. Students are not measured against one another; rather, they are treated as individuals measured against desired outcomes. In this way, ISM students achieve subject mastery and become confident test takers, many of whom score in the upper percentiles on standardized tests such as the national Educational Records Bureau (ERB), AP®, ACT®, and SAT® tests.

“If parents knew what an amazing experience their child will have, they would enroll in a minute.” -ISM teacher

Our curriculum is further enhanced by extracurricular opportunities that include, but are not limited to, math league, student government, robotics, debate, the arts and varsity athletics as well as language camp and travel abroad programs.

Strong focus on math and science Today’s students need a competitive foundation in mathematics and science. The ISM curriculum offers rigorous instruction set to global standards in math and science, building competencies for a global workplace. Students are introduced to concrete and abstract concepts as soon as they enter school. Science instruction also emphasizes higher order thinking. Many students progress to take AP and even post-AP courses in math, science, and world languages.

Early, ongoing world language instruction

The International School of Minnesota is situated on a beautiful 55 acre campus with lake front, woods and trails. Our modern 32 bedroom residence hall features a theater, recreation and fitness centers, laundry facilities, and common study areas.

In keeping with our global orientation, ISM emphasizes world languages. Beginning with our youngest learners in Preschool and continuing through high school to graduation, our students receive daily instruction in world languages taught by native speakers.

By graduation, ISM students master at least one world language in addition to English. Currently, world language instruction is provided in French and Spanish, with Chinese available to Upper School students. Non-native speakers receive tutoring in English to help them gain fluency and excel in the classroom.

Extensive AP classes for Upper School students ISM offers AP courses in all subject areas. With 19 AP courses currently available to our Upper School students, we offer more AP learning opportunities than any other area private school. On average, our students complete 7 AP courses by the time they graduate. Over 85 percent of students taking AP exams receive scores of 3 or higher and many receive AP Scholar awards.

Engagement in the arts Our students are encouraged to explore their talents and gain appreciation for music, art, and theater. Our Performing Arts Center is home to 12+ high-quality musical and theater productions annually. Students can choose to participate in band, orchestra, musical ensembles, concert choir, show choir, and drama.

“ISM kids have something that other kids don’t havewe know who we are. -Former ISM student

Physical fitness and athletics The ISM athletic department has translated the Presidential Fitness Test standards into individual goals that promote lifelong fitness and confidence. Students develop physical skills through a variety of team and individual sports and take advantage of our expanded gym and new track. Our youngest students spend time in our indoor pool, where they learn to swim. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and school pride are cultivated through practice and organized competition. In the Upper School, ISM offers varsity soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and track and field.

A global, welcoming community

of inclusion

There’s a special sense of belonging at ISM—a feeling shared by our students, families, faculty, and staff. Absent is the pressure to conform to one norm or standard. Individuals can be their true selves and find friendship and affiliation within the larger group. Our global and cultural diversity is an important part of who we are. Together, we represent many cultures, experiences, and viewpoints. Our community far exceeds the local and national diversity median posted by The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). We believe diversity makes us richer, and all backgrounds and cultures are respected and celebrated.

“The global reach and learning with students from other backgrounds is a critical part of the ISM experience.” -ISM parent Most importantly, ISM provides a safe place where students grow and develop as individuals, free from many of the stressors that exist elsewhere. It’s an environment in which a love of learning, mutual respect, and commitment to cooperation transcend differences.

“Students from other schools who come here start off wondering if being the new kid will be hard. We just pull them right in, and they become part of who we are.” -Current ISM student

Opportunities to become

exceptional in every way The International School of Minnesota naturally develops compassionate individuals who take responsibility for their own personal intellectual growth and collaborate to ensure the success of their peers.

While we provide our students with the advantage of an outstanding international education, ISM also fosters the ethical growth and development of each student. Partnership and cooperation are taught from an early age. With mutual respect as the norm, individuals flourish.

We emphasize honesty, respect, cooperation, and hard work, and our focus on collaborative learning and peer-to-peer teaching helps instill a special confidence, pride, and maturity. Our students become global citizens with a deep understanding of world cultures, balanced by a personal commitment to social responsibility. They grow into young adults of strong moral character who take their place in the world equipped with extraordinary life skills. Our SABISÂŽ Student Life Organization (SLOÂŽ) empowers students to take responsibility for their emotional, social, and moral growth as individuals and as a community. All students are challenged to get involved and play a leadership role. SLO oversees academic prefects and helps students participate in additional academic and non-academic activities that include tutoring, event planning, new student orientation, community service project planning, school newspaper, and much more.

“The one thing I hear from students that have gone off to college and come back and see me or email me: they feel like they were so prepared for college compared to other college freshmen. -ISM teacher
