P01 was launched in 2017 and is an Australian design brand that combines downunder cool with tried-and-true Italian quality. The brand features a collection of

beautifully detailed, hand finished furniture. The vision was to create a collection inspired by the Australian lifestyle with an international appeal—designs that would be as relevant in a New York studio as they would be in a London terrace or a beachside home in Sydney. Australians aren’t bound by centuries of design tradition; instead they are influenced by the natural environment, our diverse cultural backgrounds and their inquisitive natures. This unencumbered approach to design is reflected in both their spirit, and architecture and design. CLICK

Darren Palmer, Carpet Court’s style ambassador, says the

Moroccan and botanical looks will warm up your home. “The Moroccan look is exotic and luxurious,” he says. “Think bold brights, clashing patterns and earthy, rugged textures. With its bohemian edge, this look brings a sense of energy yet warmth to a space. ” When you’re decorating a room, it’s always a good idea to start with the floor. It’s one of the largest expanses of space in a home and will set the tone for the rest of your furnishings.

continued from page 15 Because of this, SP01 looks to work with talented designers from diverse backgrounds, designers who understand their vision, share their values, and who will work closely with them to develop a collection of the highest quality. “We are inspired by Australian living, which blends both an eastern and western aesthetic, while ensuring the rigorous quality and ease of distribution that comes with Italian manufacturing,” says Matt Lorrain, SP01 head of design and product development. SP01 furniture has an instantly identifiable aesthetic that captures the spirit of the Australian lifestyle and combines this with artisanry and craftsmanship. Working with designers like Milanese-based Metrica and rising Australian talent Tom Fereday, SP01 is has chosen to work with honest materials, crafted in the best Italian factories to create a fresh, international point of view. “SP01 is a novelty in the ever- challenging world of design furniture,” says Metrica chief designer, Robin Rizzini, who designed 10 new pieces for the Aussie brand late last year. “There are new brands every year and all of them are willing to make a statement or to be remembered. The strength of SP01 is its specific positioning as a brand with an international collection but a very ‘local’ sensibility for quality, taste and craftsmanship.” Metrica was an ideal partner for this launch, as its furniture is as at ease in residential spaces as commercial projects explains Lorrain. “Their versatile designs are characterised by their 32  giftguideonline.com.au

and craftsmanship in north east Italy, the spiritual home of chair making, we have developed new additions to the Tim Rundle x SP01 collection, which was first launched in 2017,” says the London-based industrial designer. “These pieces continue the bold aesthetic themes established in the initial range, while adding the practical functionalities of dining chairs and low stools.” Inspired by the arch that defined the Michelle mirror series, the new seating collection is an exercise in pure, architectural geometry. On its own, Michelle is a subtle statement. An occasional chair, in multiples, for dining, a side stool, or both, the framed arch back becomes an ordered repetitive element that references the classical colonnade. Building on the success of the Caristo lounge chair, the new dining chair variation takes form as a familiar typology. Its lineage is expressed in the ‘crushed tube-form’ bracket detail borrowed from its bigger sibling. The Caristo dining chair is stackable, available in upholstered and plywood options and comfortable in a variety of environments. Responding to the success of the Jeanette chair, Tom Fereday and SP01 have developed a family of pieces that continue the narrative of the Jeanette collection to include a lounge chair, sofa and coffee table range. The combination of precision metal work and traditional hand finishing, the Jeanette lounge chair is sculpted from wire with a unique high back that is contrasted by soft, elegant cushions. continued from page 17 “The Moroccan look has warm, spicy undertones and an earthy feel, so seek out flooring in a warm neutral shade with plenty of texture. Timber flooring works equally well in a Moroccan scheme—opt for timber with warm undertones. Extra-wide boards are trending right now and will add a contemporary touch to your exotic scheme. “Complete the look with a medley of bright, patterned rugs and cushions, buffed leather accessories, decorative pendants and woven wall hangings,” he says. The botanical trend works well with Australian homes with our love for the indoor-outdoor concept. “We’re passionate about indoor-outdoor living in Australia, and this trend is all about bringing nature inside. The result is a fresh, relaxed look that’s easy to love. “A pale timber floor with cool undertones creates a soft, easy-to-live-with foundation for this look and contrasts beautifully with its rich, forest greens. Or, for a sumptuous feel underfoot, opt for carpet. “The key to making this look work is not to overfill the space—you want it to feel light and airy,” says Palmer. “Choose one or two statement features, such as an oversized leaf-print wallpaper across one wall or a forestgreen velvet sofa. Then, add in shelves and accessories in woven rattan and blonde timber, white plantation shutters and plenty of greenery. Finish off with touches of gold for a modern-luxe feel.” 36  giftguideonline.com.au

interior

The beauty of today’s flooring, says Palmer, is the vast amount of options. “If you haven’t shopped for flooring in a while, you’ll be amazed at what’s available now—there really is something for every style, budget and home set-up.” With so many options, the first step is to consider how you’ll use the space, he says. “Do you need something hardwearing, easy to clean, ultra-luxurious, or able to cope with the demands of children and pets? Once you’ve narrowed down your requirements, it’s time for the fun part— choosing a flooring style that will completely transform the look of your room and home.”

Darren Palmer’s flooring style tips Textured appeal: to add texture to your interior, consider a chunky felted loop pile carpet in this season’s on trend colours such as charcoal, silvery-grey or sand. Family friendly: if you have children or pets, a level loop-pile carpet in a mid-tone neutral with some flecks of colour will be the most hardwearing and forgiving. Fibre smarts: wool carpet has a luxurious, natural appeal, but solution-dyed nylon is a great choice if you’re looking for a soft carpet with superior fade and stain-resistance for a sunny room or a home with kids. Grab a sample: carpet and hard flooring colours will look different from the showroom once you get them home. To work out whether a colour or timber finish is right for your interior, take a sample home and look at it at different times of day and under various light conditions. Consider your options: love the look of timber but want something low-maintenance and more affordable? Why not consider timber-look vinyl planks or laminate, which give you the appearance of real wood for less and can often be used in wet rooms such as bathrooms and laundries. The touch test: to assess how soft a carpet will feel underfoot, don’t just feel it with your hands― slip off your shoes and walk on it. BACK TO CONTENTS
