ou probably first heard of Irish singersongwriter Hozier the way we all did, when his morose, austere single “Take Me to Church” skulked its way onto Top 40 airwaves in 2014. It stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the pop landscape of “All About That Bass” and Taylor Swift’s 1989, but an unlikely earworm was born. Hozier’s follow-up album, Wasteland, Baby!, is finally upon us, and it’s as big and echoey as his breakthrough song, as if it were designed to fill the vaults of a cathedral. Appropriately enough, there’s some gospel influence in there, mixed with Celtic folk and blues-rock. win brothers Amiri and Rahiem Taylor are swimming in the same psychedelic waters as bands like Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and their group Blac Rabbit harkens back to both the psychrock of the ’60s and the shoegaze of the recent past. The Taylors got their start playing Beatles songs in the New York subways, and after a video of them covering “Eight Days a Week” went viral a couple years ago, they started Blac Rabbit in earnest.
