Horses are scientifically called Equines. Equines have been domesticated and bred by man for approximately 6000 years. They can be kept together with other animals as companions, e.g. sheep, goats, donkeys or cattle. They can be very attached to smaller animals, like cats. Dogs need to be well behaved and trained to avoid accidents, because horses are easily scared by dogs. What Horses are called at the different stages of life? Any young baby-horse is called foal until it is 6 months old, then up to the age of 2 years they are called yearlings. If it is a male horse it is called colt as long as it is under 4 years old. If it gets older than 4 he is called a stallion. Most colts will be operated (castrated), because they are not intended to be used for breeding and they will be easier to handle, ride or drive and keep. After castration (removal of the testicles), it is called a gelding. A young female pony or horse is a filly and after the age of 4 years she is called a mare.

Did you know that Horses are very social animals? A group of ponies or horses is called a herd. In a herd is a clear defined hierarchy or ranking amongst the animals: the strongest, leading female is called alpha mare. One stallion can live together with about 20 -25 mares in a natural herd. It is very important therefore to keep a horse always together with another companion, because kept on their own they soon become lonesome and suffer.

Horse Talk! You probably experienced already how equines communicate with each other. Whinnying and neighing can be heard, if you ride away from other horses or if they meet. Mares express very different sounds when they are nursing a foal. Deep, smooth sounds, whickering can be heard then. You might also have heard it at feeding time from other horses. To warn others in the herd, they use an alarming snorting. If two new ponies meet they are snuffling at each other and are very excited. Usually you can hear a sharp and loud squealing sound. They often face each other, squeal and lift a front leg or back up and swirl round, ready to kick. When a mare is in season, a stallion can express a loud roaring which is his mating call.

The Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation Society A Fosterer’s Tail Anyone who has met me out walking will know I have a lot of dogs and, yes, they are sometimes a handful! Many of the dogs I am walking are not my own but are fostered from the rescue. In 2008 my trio of old dogs all died within weeks of each other, I set out to find myself a new companion and was shocked by the number of rescue dogs on websites. Whilst searching, I was contacted by a friend who had just donated some items to a local rescue and had seen a puppy in the van. So T-bag joined our household in September 2008. Whilst adopting her, I got talking to Sophie and volunteered to dog walk for the rescue at the weekends. Some dogs don’t do well in kennels, so I started to bring the occasional dog home. In 2009 TARRS lost the provision of kennels due to the owners retirement, so to continue the rescue re-structured by using foster homes for the dogs in their care. I have been fostering for many years now, each dog is special to me and I always have a pang of sadness when each one leaves. Letting go can be very hard but I firmly believe that fostering is by far the most productive way that I, as just one normal (ish) person, can literally save lives.

Hooves & Legs Horses are able to stand while sleeping without falling down! This is possible, because they have got a tendon system around the bones and joints of the legs, which does not get tired for a long time. In comparison, we get easily tired limbs and feet and need to sit or lie down.

Charity Fun Dog Show

MAY 2011

May is often regarded as the best month by gardeners; with the freshness of spring, anticipation of summer just around the corner and of course Chelsea Flower Show this month...what more could you want!

Star Plants for April ★ Papaver orientale ‘Cedric Morris’ ★ Allium hollandicum ★ Euphorbia x martini ★ Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Nora Barlow’ ★ Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ ★ Clematis macropetala ‘Markham’s Pink’ ★ .....and any Syringa’s (lilac’s) or Rhododendron’s!

Spring-flowering bulbs are still looking good this month, especially Tulips. Trees are in full leaf and Rhododendrons add their rich colour to the garden too. With their large clusters of flowers they are a great addition to the garden especially if you have acid soil....if not why not grow in a pot of ericaceous compost to add drama to a patio? It’s now time to think about replacing spring bedding plants with summer ones. Be sure to wait until later in the month to plant them out though to avoid the last few frosts. Protection is needed at this time of year for any tender plants being hardened off, wrap them with fleece, polythene or move to a cold frame....TOP TIP: Look out for clear blue skies at the end of a warm sunny day to spot an impending frost! May is your last chance to sow or turf new lawns before it gets too dry and be sure to water plants that need it regularly especially newly planted specimens.

May is also my busiest time of year for designs so please keep an eye on my website to see new projects, www.lucybravington.com, I will cover one in a future issue. Enjoy Chelsea Flower Show, you may even bump into me there!

March Walkslim Diary

Hello Everyone, as promised my Walkslim diary. So, be sure and get outside regularly as that is the safest and least expensive way to increase your vitamin D levels. Take some time for yourself and work up to the point where you get one hour of sun on your skin every day it is possible. In nearly every circumstance, getting your vitamin D by exposing your body to UV light from the sun is the best option. When doing so, however, there are two extremely important points to remember:

1. Use Tanning beds wisely, as they may increase

your risk of cancer.

2. Avoid staying in the sun long enough to burn your skin.

How to Use Exercise Equipment for Weight Loss

At the beginning of the season, limit your exposure to

increase your time in the sun so that in a few weeks, you

will be able to have normal sun exposure with little risk of

skin cancer.

Use a treadmill to walk or run for long periods of time (preferably at least 20 to 30 minutes). During that time, adjust the treadmill to change the height of your ascent. Doing so increases the weight loss potential of walking and running.

Ride an exercise bike for 30 minutes or more. The exercise bike has, in general, a lower impact on your muscles and joints, making it possible to go for greater distances. Greater distances equal more weight loss.

Swim using one of the exercise “noodles,” which are foam flotation devices. They may not seem like they do much, but holding them underwater actually requires a lot more strength than you would think, and continued use helps to burn more calories.

Jump on a cross trainer, a terrific weight loss machine that helps simulate running while removing the impact on your feet and knees. You can adjust the resistance and the incline to help increase your heart rate, which in turn increases the fat burn. Some cross traoner even have a “Fat Burn” setting which makes the adjustments automatically.

Take an aerobics class that features a “stepper,” a single step that appears more like a very stout bench. Using a step or two steps joined together really increases your heart rate, burning a much larger amount of calories.

Remember in “setting a plan”, one of the first things to do was set a budget (in time and money). You are investing like any other business so you want to see a return and how you performed against expectations.

1/ Set a context – what is your performance looking like before the campaign starts. For example:

Stratford

01789 205831

• How are the sales and profit performing versus last year?

Warwick

01926 495321

• How many customers are coming in to shop / week?

• What is the average transaction value by customer?

Alcester

01789 762470

2/ What happened as a result of the marketing campaign?

Utilities

For example:

The Image Computers Buying a new laptop, what to look out for? If you’re looking at purchasing a new laptop then look no further. Below is a breakdown of some of the key things you should look out for when purchasing a new laptop. There are generally two classes of laptops out there on the market being:

Netbooks These are the little babies of the computer world. Generally between 8 to 13 inches in size, these are small low powered laptops which primarily are good for checking your email, document writing and browsing the web. The average price of a Netbook now in the UK is around £200 – £400 and the more popular models include the Acer Aspire One as well as the ASUS Eee PC. The main positives of this class are that they’re very light at around 1kg and the battery life last anything from a couple of hours to a whole working day. The negatives are however that they’re underpowered, have a small screen and usually come at the sacrifice of having no ports or optical drives. Beware as these do get HOT!! When used for long periods.

Notebooks / Laptops The Notebook or Laptop has a diverse choice and therefore the most options available to you. Your average Notebook or Laptop can range from anything from a £270 cheap student laptop to a very good Intel i7 processor at £2000. The range of options is vast but I believe the Toshiba Satellite Series, Acer Aspire, HP Envy Series and the Lenovo are the better ones on the market. Most of the these laptops will weigh around 2-3kgs, have a battery that last usually 2-3 hours and are usually separated by a few key extras such as DVD/Blu-ray drives, backlit keyboards and extra USB ports for example.

3/ What happened with the customer? For example:

Police Stratford

01789 414111

Alcester

01789 762207

• How many extra names have you on your database ?

• How many people took up the offer?

 • What has been the effect of Social Media? More friends on facebook? New followers on twitter? Hits on email marketing?

• New computer service centre open

And finally – don’t forget to calculate the cost of the marketing plan compared to additional sales and profit generated.

I hope this series of 3 articles on marketing has been useful for your business. Marketing is really the heartbeat behind moving your business forward. So best of luck with your campaign!

Random Access Memory or RAM is all too often overlooked. Sometimes all you need to beef up your system in a noticeable way is to up the RAM. On a new laptop the minimum you should be looking for is 2Gb of RAM and with 4Gb being more the standard today. You’ll need a 64-bit processor in order to use anything over 3Gb.

Processor The two main brands of processors out there are Intel and AMD. Some people will traditionally stick with one or the other but really there isn’t much of a difference. For a low end computer you should probably stick with a cheap Core II Duo processor however that technologies quickly going out of fashion. Depending on your price range an entry level Core i3 will set you off at around £500, Core i5 at around £600/£700 and the Core i7 at anything over £800. The AMD equivalents are the AMD Athlon II X4 for the Core i3, AMD Phenom II 955 for the i5 and AMD Phenom II X4 or AMD Phenom II X 6 for the Core i7. Also to take advantage of anything above 3Gb of RAM, you’ll need a 64-bit processor. This used to be a problem a few years back with compatibility issues but pretty much most modern programs offer both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of their software.

Hard Drive Capacity The standard for this year’s computers is 320Gb to 500Gb hard drive. When picking out hard drives, you might also want to take a look at the higher speed 7,200 RPM drives compared to the standard 5,400 RPM drives.

3D Laptops These are a relatively new line in laptops and therefore have quite a hefty price tag. If you’re into 3D gaming or media viewing, I’d recommend a laptop which has NVidia 3D Vision capability. What you get is a display which has a high Hz rate usually around 120Hz compared to the standard 60/70Hz, a pair of NVidia active shutter glasses and a USBpowered IR emitter. You’ll usually find that there’s about a £200 premium on the 3D models over their standard counterparts so it’s really a personal preference of how much you want 3D really especially as the technology is getting better all the time.

Cover up We decided to paint the walls and ceilings in the lounge, and the ceiling in the kitchen. All the walls had been stripped of wallpaper in the lounge and all that needed doing was the ceiling. Then the hailstorm hit, and the ceiling in the lounge was flooded. We came home to find water dripping through the roof and from the lightbulb as we turned it on! Thank goodness for the frantically busy on call electrician who allayed our fears about electrocution! The insurance painters finally made our ceiling a far finer finish than we could ever have done.

We didn't get any replacement carpet however as it was too old, so we decided that this was the time to hire the floor sander and hit the rimu floors. After carefully filling the nails in the main room, we ran out of filler and bought some more from a certain warehouse. My wife spent more time filling, and waiting.... and waiting... for the potent smelling filler to set. It seemed to have set, so she began to sand, but the filler smudged everywhere across the nice rimu - any varnish over this and it would look like smears. So she had to get it out of the nail holes and replace it with the correct stuff.

The Image in Stratford can help you from less than ÂŁ30 a month.

There were no available professional floorsanders able to help, so my wife hired a floorsanding machine. It must have been quite a sight! If it hit the wall, then the sand belt would rip off, and it would take the next five minutes to unscrew the ÂŁ5 paper, and put on a fresh one. There weren't many surplus ones to return to the hire centre, let's just put it that way!

Our adverts come in a range of sizes and all design work is included in the price.

On varnishing day, it was a stinking hot day and the one detail we had forgotten was to varnish when it's not too hot. As we mopped it on with speedbrushes, it began to set really fast, "Quick" said hubby to wife "It's setting, and quick, there's some pouring down the hole in the floor." Not knowing much about varnishing, we thought the next coat would cover up the diagonal strokes you could see in one area, however three coats later, it didn't. The rest of the job looked pretty good with the lovely varnish, but we now have a mat over the less than perfect area, and hope that in a few years we will have another go, and this time be a little wiser.

Your advert will also appear on our e-magazine at www.theimage-stratford.co.uk and you can feature in our mid-monthly e-newsletter.
