I

t’s hard to believe that an entire year has passed since I first assumed the chairmanship of the Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce. It’s been an honor, a privilege, and, above all, an adventure — one that I look forward to continuing into a second term. Without a doubt, Norwalk is “open for business” — the SoNo Collection, our new highend shopping destination, is on track, development in the downtown Wall Street area is booming, and more and more people are choosing to live, learn, and work in our city. In the midst of this period of unprecedented growth, we’re taking steps to ensure that the Chamber continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community we serve. Late last year, the Chamber embarked on a strategic planning initiative to assess how we can be a better resource for you, both now and in the future. We conducted a survey to find out what our members value about the Chamber, what they think we can improve, and how we can be more proactive in meeting their needs. During the process, we learned a lot about how we can attract new members, better serve existing ones, and communicate more effectively with internal and external audiences. We received a lot of creative suggestions on how to accomplish these objectives. As we collected and analyzed your feedback, a few key themes seemed to emerge. In general, respondents expressed three main recommendations on how the Chamber can increase its

2 THE CHAMBER REPORT l September 2015

• Establish a young professionals group aimed at businesspeople 40 and under. We’re already taking steps to put your recommendations into action. On the social media front, we’re looking into new platforms to share information. Soon, you’ll be able to receive Chamber ,news through Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn — in addition, of course, to The Hour Newspaper and more traditional media outlets. Additionally, Chamber members have been sharing their expertise and ideas as we look to refresh our logo and branding. Most of those who responded to our survey are satisfied with how the Chamber serves them. However, some expressed interest in participating in more workshops and seminars designed to help them grow their businesses. We’re going to be scheduling upcoming business development events led by experts in various fields. We’ll be looking to you for more input and ideas in this area. Finally, the key to a successful Chamber is anticipating the future needs of our membership so that we can evolve to meet those needs. To do that, it’s important to ensure that future leaders get involved in Chamber activities and decisions. To that end, we plan to launch a young professionals group aimed at those under 40. In addition to providing young professionals with networking opportunities, the group will offer special events and projects aimed at career development. We anticipate that it also will provide the Chamber with an infusion of new ideas and perspectives so that we can improve our support of this critical (but sometimes overlooked) segment of our business community. These initiatives are made possible by your continued interest in and support of the Chamber. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your involvement. I also thank you for being our best ambassadors — by participating in events, recruiting new members, and sharing your views with us, you are creating a vital and active chamber. In closing, I’d like to offer very special thanks to Ed Musante, Brian Griffin, and the Chamber staff. They are the engine that power this machine. They bring initiative, energy, and purpose to their mission of supporting the greater Norwalk business community. It’s been a pleasure to serve my first term supported by such an outstanding team, and I look forward to a most successful 2016-2017! Cordially,

Terri Polley Chairman

reat marketing starts with great stories. There’s nothing like a video to really show your organization or company’s unique story, and inspire and connect to your target audience. Aries Video Productions has been helping hundreds of companies tell their story for nearly 25 years. The company works with all types of clients, corporations, municipalities, and non-profits, locally and nationally, on all types of projects: on-air, internal and external videos. Aries president Marge Costa has a deep experience in video production, working for CBS Television Stations as a producer for 10 years before starting the company. “I was traveling a lot with CBS and once I had my first child, I knew I’d want to be

closer to home,” says Costa. “CBS was very supportive of my new venture and was one of my first clients.” In the years since, Costa has built a growing clientele, mainly from referrals and word of mouth from other clients and production studios with whom she works regularly. “We have the ability to create the whole piece from writing, shooting to editing, but for the odd project that requires a lot of location shooting, and a lot of intricate post-production, we partner with a production studio.” Costa’s love of film has compelled her to share her talents with others, especially children. She has taught video production and desktop editing to local school children for more than 15 years in various camps and after school programs such as the Carver Center and After School Alliance. “In all of my classes, the children end up with a video they completed themselves,” says Costa. But the best part for her is the inspiration she’s given to many of her former students. “I’ve had a num-

ber of children come back to me years later and tell me that that class inspired them to go on to college or pursue a career in TV production. In fact, one of my former students now works at Channel 12 news.” Costa is currently working on a project for herself, a documentary about illegal adoption from mother–baby homes in Ireland between 1940 and the mid-1960s. “I had been wanting to do a documentary for a long time when I met a woman who herself was illegally adopted from Ireland, which gave me the idea. This was a story I just had to tell.” After several years of work, she expects the film to be finished by the summer in time for film festivals in the fall. For your next video project, contact Costa at Aries Video Productions at Aries@optonline.net, call (203) 216-6024, or visit www.ariesvideoproductions.com. hether you own a poodle, German Shepherd, or a Polski Owczarek Nizinny (Polish Lowland Sheepdog), you can be assured that he or she will get expert grooming and great care at Paws & Reflect Professional Pet Styling in Darien. Winner of Best of Gold Coast for 11 years, Paws & Reflect prides itself on its expertise; many of its groomers have been in the profession for 40 years. Owner Rebecca Stanton has been in the dog business nearly her whole working life. She has been crazy about dogs since she was child, always reading dog books and dog magazines. After a stint in Alaska on a fishing boat, Stanton decided to make a change. Her first dog grooming job was at a a kennel where she was paid $100 a week, plus room and board. Since that first job, she has honed her skills both in dog grooming salons, as well as spending several years traveling around the country with some of the country’s top dog han-

dlers preparing their dogs for shows. “Working for handlers is a great way to really get to know dogs because you have to know what the perfect dog of a particular breed is supposed to look like to win that medal,” says Stanton. This experience served her well when she decided to open her own place, Paws & Reflect. The shop provides full-service grooming for all dog breeds from toys to large dogs. Stanton says that many of her clients have been with her since she be-

gan the business 14 years ago. “We have some families that we’ve watched their children grow up and now care for their fourth or fifth dog.” But the true measure of success for Stanton is having her clients know that their dogs are receiving the best treatment at Paws & Reflect. “Many of the dogs who come here regularly are happy and wagging their tails when they come in and when they leave,” says Stanton. “We have a local realtor whose Wheaton Terrier we groom. He got away one day — and wouldn’t you know, he showed up here.” That is truly a measure of success! For a professional and caring place to have your pet groomed, try Paws & Reflect Pet Styling at 1082 Boston Post Road in Darien. TULIPTREE SITE DESIGN, INC.

S

pring is just around the corner. It’s not too early to start thinking about your outdoor space. Your house’s exterior landscaping is an important feature of your home and making it both functional and beautiful is important. Norwalk-based Tuliptree Site Design plans and installs residential landscapes, working closely with clients to create outdoor living spaces of exceptional beauty, sustainability, and quality. Tuliptree Site Design was started by Michael Mushak 13 years ago when he decided he wanted to run his own design/build business in order to have more control over projects, and better serve his clients. “Before starting Tuliptree, I

was an independent designer for many years using various contractors, but they were sometimes hard to control in terms of schedule and quality,” says Mushak. Mushak has had a lifelong interest in landscape design. He graduated with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from Rutgers University and is a licensed landscape architect in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. Mushak’s landscape designs have been featured in Architectural Digest, Country Living, Greenwich Magazine, Hudson Valley Magazine, Metropolitan Home, and The New York Times. Tuliptree serves a wide range of residential properties of various scales and styles, mainly in Fairfield and Westchester counties, but the firm has worked on projects all over the country. “We are not a large company, by design, so that we can maintain high quality and standards for our clients,” says Mushak. “It’s not about quantity for us, but quality.” They do not do weekly maintenance, but gladly come back and freshen up landscapes they have installed. “Because land-

scapes grow and change through time, we are often asked to return and do an annual spruce-up, " says Mushak. To ensure that attention to quality, each project is unique, tailored to each customer’s needs and wants. “Whether traditional or modern, we believe that strong landscape design should appropriately reflect the environmental and cultural conditions presented by each unique site and client.” In addition, sustainability is more than just a concept for the firm, but an active process based on a constant awareness of energy efficiency, environmental impacts, and ecological benefits. Mushak continues. “We strongly believe in delivering landscape designs that are not only consistently beautiful year after year, but that are healthy both for people and the environment.” To get started on making your outdoor home surroundings beautiful for the upcoming warm weather, contact Tuliptree Site Design at www.tuliptreesitedesign.com, info@tuliptreesitedesign.com, or (203) 838-4482.
