For years now, open concept living has been requested in almost every renovation project. Surprisingly, homeowners are in no need of a formal ‘tea-room’ off the front foyer anymore.
OPEN CONCEPT LIVING ALLOWS HOMEOWNERS TO COMBINE MULTIPLE ZONES WITHIN THEIR HOME INTO ONE LARGE SPACE WITH NO SEPARATION. TYPICALLY, HOMEOWNERS WILL COMBINE THE LIVING, DINING AND KITCHEN INTO ONE LARGE SPACE. Sightlines are expanded in open concept living, typically with an increase of natural light resulting in a bright and airy home. More natural light tops the request list on almost every renovation we take on.
Whether your open concept home is small or large, multi-purpose living goes hand-in-hand with an open concept design. When the walls are no longer separating these work zones, one large space needs to function in many different ways. Let’s use the living, dining and kitchen open concept layout as an example. This open concept design needs to function in very different ways, look cohesive, and also feel like separate spaces all at the same time. But how do designers accomplish this?
Oftentimes to make an open concept design cohesive, we carry similar colours and textures throughout with similar accents. Repetition is the new black. At project Landry Lane, the kitchen and dining area is tied together through the rope texture on the counter stool which is then repeated on the dining chairs. White and grey cabinetry is mimicked in the dining area through a white table and a black woven rug. In the kitchen black hardware, lighting and faucet are carried through into the dining with black décor pieces to create a cohesive design.
Shall we move along to the family room? This space is within the openconcept area but feels a little more separate. Separating the kitchen and dining areas from the living area was accomplished a few different ways.
Often in open-concept living, the same flooring is carried throughout the space. To break-up the flooring and create a separate space, a large area rug is added to the design. Like adding a belt to a little black dress, this creates the illusion of a border outline for a separate space without being confined by walls.
Another design decision that separated the living area was painting the built-ins a different colour. Colour is a great way to break up spaces. Colour can make a statement or can be a shade darker or lighter, either way, it creates a visual break and tells you this space has a different function than the spaces it is combined with.
kitchen areas can become the focal points in these spaces. Layering furniture that has storage opportunities is great too. For example, behind the sectional stands two console tables which could have baskets for blankets or board games tucked underneath.
