LIGHT UP YOUR Life Adding a skylight can enhance any space, making it lighter, brighter, fresher and more cheerful. A skylight can also improve our experience indoors, where we spend 90 per cent of our time but the air quality is three to five times worse than outdoors.
In addition to the health benefits of more natural light, skylights reduce the need for artificial light and can lower electricity costs delivering twice the amount of light as vertical windows allowing for daylight to penetrate the center of the home. Here are five rooms that would be even better with one of these light solutions.
Incorporate more natural light into your home office or studio to increase productivity, minimize mistakes and improve your mood. Working in natural light will also lessen eyestrain, which can help reduce headaches.
ATTIC OR LOFT CONVERSION By converting your attic into a functional loft, you can add more usable square footage, increasing the value of your home. Keep the space bright, airy and open by including a skylight in your new design, leaving you with views of the sky and not your neighbour’s roof, exterior side wall or bathroom. This will allow you to transform your dark attic space into a practical bright space flooded with natural light. ◆
BATHROOM By adding a venting skylight, you can allow in an abundance of natural daylight while also letting the steam out after a hot bath or shower. Plus, did you know that the best lighting for make-up application is natural light? A skylight can let you enjoy privacy, an unobstructed view and a sophisticated design touch in your bathroom.
KITCHEN Programmable skylights from Velux will let in natural light and they give you the control to properly air out your home and keep your kitchen fresh during and after cooking. By opening your skylight, gases like hot air, cooking odours and toxins escape through the roof.
LIVING ROOM Make this popular space feel bigger with a skylight — you can even combine multiple units to create an architectural statement. Add a solar-powered blind to reduce the glare on your television and other screens.

SOFT WATER VS. HARD WATER:
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? water hardness scale, you might also notice effects on your personal hygiene. Hard water can leave a feeling of residue on your hands, skin, and hair upon washing. As a result, your hair and skin may feel more dry and brittle. It is up to your water supplier to test water hardness before distributing it to your community. Luckily, you can still combat water hardness by softening your water. Using a water softener can reduce impurities in your water, including calcium and magnesium. What does this mean for you and your home? Cleaner water, appliances, hair, and skin.
WHAT IS SOFT WATER?
WATER IS WATER, RIGHT? NOT QUITE. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF WATER THAT COULD BE IN YOUR HOME: HARD VS. SOFT WATER. That said, there’s a good chance it’s the latter. So, what is the difference between soft water vs. hard water and how does it affect you? Here’s everything you should know about the hardness of water.
WHAT IS HARD WATER? Hard water is the excessive presence of calcium and magnesium - two naturally-occurring minerals in water. The higher amount of these minerals that are present in water, the higher it will rank on the hard water scale. While both essential to everyday health, calcium and magnesium are not essential for water usage. In fact, hardness in water can have detrimental effects on your home. When using water for cleaning purposes, you may notice spots or a film of residue on your dishes, shower, or clothing. Not to mention, you may find particles inside of your appliances like the dishwasher or laundry machine. When hard water is heated, calcium deposits can form. If this builds up, it can greatly damage the performance and lifespan of your appliances. This includes your pipes and even your coffee machine. To make matters worse, your heating costs will skyrocket and the efficiency of your appliances will plummet. If your water is high on the
Unlike hard water, soft water is free of harsh minerals that can damage your home and your body. In other words, it is more gentle on your body and your home. Without calcium and magnesium, soft water can prevent scale buildup around your home including your appliances and pipes. Best of all, it increases the effectiveness in soap compared to hard water which can inactivate the soap’s ingredients. In regard to health, soft water can combat the dryness and stickiness caused by cold weather, low humidity, and hard water. What does this mean for your body? Softer, silkier hair and skin after every wash. Systems like Culligan’s Water Softeners can help soften water so you achieve more efficient cleaning in your home.
WHAT KIND OF WATER DO YOU HAVE? If you’ve been living with hard water for a while, you may be oblivious to its detrimental effects. Unsure if you need to soften your water? Look for the tell-tale signs: • Film or spots on your dishes, appliances, and clothing. • Scale build-up around faucets or in appliances. • Dull, flat hair. • Dry, itchy skin. • A layer of scum on hair and skin upon washing. In addition, you can check with your water supplier to find out the hardness of your community’s water. For a customized analysis of your water, get started with a free in-home water test from Culligan. In just ten minutes, you can discover the impurities hiding in your water and learn how to best combat them. ◆

THE MIRACLE OF MULCH Article by Mark and Ben Cullen
APPLY 6 TO 8 CMS (2-3 INCHES) OF THIS ALL-NATURAL MULCH OVER THE SURFACE OF THE SOIL IN ANY PART OF YOUR GARDEN.
It knits together when dry, isn’t washed or blown away and it smothers weeds very effectively. Once spread, the fibres knit together, forming a blanket that stays in place but still allows water to percolate through. After two to four years, it will begin to break down, adding valuable organic matter to the soil. Then you simply spread another layer over the bed.
We believe that 90% of our gardening success is rooted in proper ground preparation. Without a doubt, mulch is a major part of each planting procedure. Mulching with natural materials is very beneficial and serves so many different purposes that it is hard not to make it our number one garden rule. Studies have shown that mulching reduces evaporation from the soil by up to 50%. Evaporation can be particularly high in hot, dry and windy conditions, but can be a problem in all gardens. Mulch can also help if too much water or rain is a problem. It will improve poorly draining soil over time as it breaks down. You can plant directly into some organic mulches rather than in the soil preventing your plants from having wet feet during a rainy spell.
The “insulating” effect of mulch is often overlooked even by experienced gardeners, yet it can be a real lifesaver for your plants, particularly shallow rooted perennials. A layer of mulch keeps the soil cooler on hot days and warmer on cool days, meaning more gradual shifts in soil temperature. In summer, mulch can keep the ground cooler by as much as 6°C (11°F). This is particularly useful in very sunny, hot spots in the garden where high soil temperatures can create drying conditions that damage the roots, especially of shallow-rooted or newly planted plants.
MARK’S FAVOURITE MULCH IS SHREDDED PINE OR CEDAR BARK.
An even layer 6 to 8 cms deep of mulch will help to reduce weeds in the garden. It allows your garden plants to compete with weeds and makes it easier to remove those weeds which do appear. Mulching can reduce weeding by up to 95% in the first year. Heard enough? Fact is, it does not matter what growing zone in Canada you live, mulching provides many benefits. Perhaps the main benefit is providing you with more time to do the things you enjoy, including hanging in the hammock. ◆
