The year ahead already has wonderful events planned and we look forward to improving upon last year’s successes. The next Bingo will be held Friday, February 6th.

On Saturday, February 14th, one of the favorite winter events will take place at the Hideout Ski Hill. The Hideout Cardboard Classic is always a great time and all residents are encouraged to participate. Stay tuned for more information as we finalize all the details for all the events in 2026.

It’s are finding W going to be another great ourselves year! having to In 1976, while in college and also during the celebration of the United States being 200 years old, I was trying to figure out how old I would be in the year 2000 and if I would be around to see it. It’s hard to believe we are knocking on the door of 2026 in which we will be celebrating the United States 250th birthday on July 4th, 2026. Time never stops.

On December 7, 1903, The Wright Brothers flew their 1st plane. On July 21, 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Those dates are ONLY 65 years apart. Think about that. Some of us have/had parents who lived through both. We continue to amaze ourselves on what we have and have seen accomplished.

The Food & Beverage Department continues to strive for accomplishments also. November’s comment cards delivered our best reviews yet. Of 53 comment cards collected and based on the rating of 1 being the lowest rating and 5 being the highest rating, only 1 review was below a 4. Astounding!!!!

Our newly promoted Sous Chef, Dan, has started and continues to deliver unique off the menu features on weekends. The Prime Rib Fridays are back and we

roast more throughout Fridays. The lottery has kicked off inside the clubhouse with all games and scratch offs available which will provide additional income to The Hideout. The downstairs game room project is completed. If you haven’t been down there lately, stop by and take a look. The room is also available for rental and/or catering, so give us a call!

Winter is upon us and the ski season is gearing up. The Ski Hill Grill’s upgraded menu has something for everyone, whether you are skiing or not. The Grill will follow the Ski Hill hours of operation.

The Ski Hill Bar will be open Saturdays under the pavilion, heated for those who may want a warm adult beverage.

The next Wine Tasting and Tapas will be held at the Main Lodge with Chef Brett, our wine expert Vicki and myself on January 14th. This continues to sell-out, so get your reservations in soon.

The Hideout Facilities Department had a great 2025 year, and has completed all projects that were scheduled and under budget. In 2026, we have a reduced project list, but one of the largest projects is the building of the New Mini Golf Course which will be placed at the current mini–golf location.

The Facilities Department will be demolishing the old course and excavating the area to prepare for fill. The new course design has elevation fluctuations and the crew will be adding fill per the design plans and survey. We are excited to begin this work and bring an entirely different appearance to the Mini Golf amenity! Some other projects scheduled for 2026 are to replace the Clubhouse roof and install new gutters and downspouts, replace the golf cart path on the Golf Course at hole number four and replace the stone panels along the bottom section of the Recreation Center with like material. We will be purchasing a replacement vehicle for Maintenance due to age and condition of one of our current vehicles, replacing our large excavator with a used excavator, and replacing two of our zero-turn grounds maintenance mowers.

Snow events during the winter months can range from a light coating, ice and sleet to feet of snow. Our Facilities Department maintains all 42 miles of roadway and all parking lots. It’s important that our members keep their speed lower than the 25-mph posted speed limit during winter weather events as the Hideout is located on a hillside, and most of our roads have inclines, declines, twists, and turns. Safety is always our number one priority, and we ensure all the main roads are taken care of for safer access to Avoy Road and Route 590 so emergency vehicles can access the community.

During snow events if there is an emergency, please contact Public Safety at 570-698-4100 ext. 212 as I am out on the road assisting my team with snow removal. I will return your call or respond to any email when I get back into the office. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as our team is out working long hours

The Main Gate PennDOT Project is still pending review with PennDOT, and we do not have a timeframe on when the design plans will be approved. Once we receive the approval to move forward with the gate project, we will plan accordingly. This Project consists of work to be done to The Hideout’s entrance on State route 590 and to install an acceleration lane leaving The Hideout.

Stormwater remediation continues to improve throughout the community. Members with stormwater related concerns can contact the Hideouts Project Manager Craig Rafaniello at 570-698-4100 Ext 132 or email crafaniello@thehideout.us Trash and Recycling hours of operation are Monday- Friday, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sundays 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Bulk Garbage hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Members in good standing can dispose of bulk items on these days and time frames only.

Members will need to present their pass at the time of drop off or pay the fee if they have used their two passes for the year. Members with tree limbs and yard waste will need to call extension 131 or 132 to schedule the drop off at Aspen Point which is located on Hidden Lake Drive just past Cliffwood Rd. on the right. Aspen Point is a gated area and will need to be unlocked for members that need to drop off yard waste.

The Bulk Garbage price list can be found on the Hideout website under Bulk Garbage, this price list is for members that have used up all their passes for the year and still have to dispose of bulk garbage. Bulk Garbage passes are good from April 1 to March 31 annually, and can be obtained at the POA Registration Office and it is recommended that you call in advance to avoid a wait. As we say goodbye to 2025, The Hideout is thrilled to welcome a new year filled with fresh possibilities. January marks the start of our 2026 membership revalidation process, and our dedicated registration team is ready to assist you every step of the way.

Key Details for a Smooth Member Revalidation Process & Experience Members will receive mailing packages containing all essential documents, including the Annual Assessment/Billing Statement and the updated Membership Information Form.

If you haven’t received your package by January 30th, please contact the POA Office at (570) 698-4100, ext. 0, Tuesday– Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to request a replacement.

Renew Online or by Mail: *Online Portal- Visit http://www. hideoutassoc.com to complete your Membership Information Form and upload required documents (such as vehicle registrations). First-time users can validate their account by entering their seven-digit Lot Number (starting with 000). *Mail-In/Mail-Out- Save time by mailing your completed Membership Information Form, vehicle registrations, and other materials. For an additional $10 fee, you’ll receive your 2026 stickers by mail. *Online Payment InformationPayments can be made online through the member portal. Association of Property Owners of The Hideout, Inc. 2026 Proposed Bylaw Amendments for Membership Vote The 2026 Bylaw Amendments, Ballot, and return envelope will be included in your 2026 statement packet. Please cast your vote either “FOR” or “AGAINST” the “Recommended Change(s)” indicated below for each bylaw.

VOTING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Each Member In Good Standing is allotted one ballot per lot. Carefully read the enclosed “Bylaw Amendments for Membership Vote” document. On the enclosed ballot, place a mark  in the box FOR or AGAINST the proposed amendment.

2. Place your completed Ballot in the small white envelope marked “Ballot” and seal. Only one Ballot per envelope is permitted. If any individual “Ballot” envelope is found to contain more than one (1) Ballot, all Ballots contained in that envelope will be disqualified.

3. Place the small “Ballot” envelope inside of the “BYLAW BALLOT ONLY” self-addressed envelope. Make sure to complete the “POA Verification” information on the back of the “BYLAW BALLOT ONLY” envelope for your vote to be counted.

4. Seal, stamp and mail the completed “BYLAW BALLOT ONLY” envelope as soon as possible to be received by the POA Office no later than Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 4:00pm EST. You also have the option to place your ballot in the secure ballot box located at the POA Office Tue-Sat 8:00am-4:00pm.

Article IV, Section 3 – ASSOCIATE MEMBERS CURRENT The following shall be entitled to “Associate Membership” in the Association, by classes: Class A. The spouse, dependent children and legal dependents of a Member who are part of the same household as the voting member; OR Class B. All non-voting co-Owners of Lots; OR Class C. Persons who by virtue of contractual agreements with the Developer are entitled to membership in the Association; OR Class D. Social Member. ANY HIDEOUT MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING WHO IS INTERESTED IN RUNNING FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF PROPERTY OWNERS OF THE HIDEOUT, INC. MAY SUBMIT THEIR FILING PACKAGE NO LATER THAN APRIL 15, 2026, TO JUDY KENNEDY, COMMUNITY MANAGER AT THE POA ADMINISTRATION BUILDING DURING OFFICE HOURS TUES-SAT 8:00AM-4:00PM.

FILING SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING COMPLETED AND SIGNED DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON THE HIDEOUT WEBSITE OR CAN BE PICKED UP AT THE POA: 1. Personal Statement of Candidacy. Board Meeting Minutes: November 15, 2025 Kennedy, Community Manager Ms. Kennedy thanked everyone in attendance. The Hideout is prepared for the winter season. Recent storms have done damage with heavy wind.

Public Safety and Maintenance worked tirelessly and their efforts are appreciated.

is $2,339,813. NBT Bank balance for New Capital as of November 15th is $460,416. Our balance with Fisher Investments for Capital Reserve as of November 15th is $2,954,198.

Operations Update: October is not fully closed, but preliminary results show income for all amenities with the exception of Administration and Community Relations is at or near budget. Administration is showing a loss of approximately $200,000 due to loss of rental income. Community Relations will have to write-off potentially $30,000 to $40,000 of revenue due to the aging accounts which the auditor will not allow to remain on the books.

Miscellaneous: Status of 2025 capital projects shows a current surplus of $31,033 for both new and reserve capital with most budgeted projects already completed. There were 33 lots that were sold from repository resulting in the need to write-off $403,440 of uncollectible dues. New owners were billed pro-rated dues totaling $91,341.

Mr. Esposito asked for a breakdown between reserve and new in the capital surplus. Ms. Tramantano responded that the numbers were combined and she did not have that information with her, but could check and have the information for the next meeting.

3) BOARD OF DIRECTOR COMMENTS: Bill Wagner, Treasurer: On December 4th, the murderer of our Public Safety Officer Jose Duran will be arraigned at the Wayne County Courthouse at 9 or 10 a.m. Members are encouraged to attend to show their support for our officer that gave his life protecting us.

Mr. Wagner thanked Dennis Polhamus for removing the post that kept damaging the flag at the Main Beach.

Mr. Wagner asked members who had echoes email through Adams Cable to register their new email address with the POA, since Adams Cable has switched to Blue Ridge.

Ed Esposito, Director: Mr. Esposito thanked the veterans for their service.

Regarding the notification system, Mr. Esposito requested a deadline from management on an implementation date.

With respect to the Agenda, the Board discussed at length a method to make the agenda many days before the meeting. It is anticipated that the Agenda will be available immediately after the Workshop, but there may be a supplemental or revised agenda for last-minute items. This should increase transparency within the community and thanked his colleagues for working through this with him.

Lisa McKenna, Director: Ms. McKenna reported that she has been a member of the community for 40 years since her parents bought their first home here. She became a full-time member approximately 5 years ago. The Hideout has a special place in her heart and is important to her. Ms. McKenna spent 30 years in television production. She has managed multi-million dollar budgets

as part of her responsibility. She has managed staff and production crews.

She worked in political advertising, managing presidential campaigns and advertising which is reactionary and stressful environments. Ms. McKenna was recently nominated and elected to the Nominating Committee which she will have to step down from. She is the treasurer of The Hideout Play for Pink.

25-136 MOTION: RESOLVED TO approve the Public Safety Exception from Bid for the unbudgeted Capital Reserve expense of $46,500 to purchase a 2023 Ford F-150 from CMI Chicago Motors Inc. to replace the decommissioned Unit 101 Ford Explorer.

A Board Poll Vote was taken on October 28, 2025 and passed 6-0.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: It was confirmed that the decommissioned vehicle will be sold, and the funds from the sale will go back into capital funds.

25-137 MOTION: RESOLVED TO approve the Public Safety unbudgeted Capital Reserve expense of $10,532.00 to Integrated Technologies for a replacement gate operator at the Main Gate with funds to be reimbursed by the driver’s insurance company.

BOARD COMMENT: Ed Esposito mentioned that any unbudgeted expenses are coming from the favorable variance mentioned in the financial report so the Board is within the budgeted amount.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: It was clarified that this item was not put out for a bid because there are limited companies that perform this type of work. This company has done other work for The Hideout before. This work is not being done until next spring, but to lock in price and assure this year’s funds for next year’s, the deposit is being paid now. Mr. Wagner clarified that he voted no because he feels the small cracking and wearing and peeling at the main entrance do not necessitate resurfacing.

Approximately 2 years ago, the courts were redone and drainage installed. Ed Esposito clarified that several pickleball players raised concerns about those courts even at the Recreation Committee meetings, but the indoor court also needs attention. It was clarified by Ms. Tramantano that the down payment is entered as a prepaid expense allowing to hold funds for 2026, but it does not impact the operational financial statements. Mr. Polhamus indicated the lifespan for outdoor courts is only 3-5 years. If wear and tear, water pooling and surface cracks are not taken care of that year, there may be a bigger problem later necessitating new asphalt while this is just sealing and repainting the surface.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: Mr. Polhamus clarified that the loops from motion 25-139 were not put in prior to the paving because during the planning meeting with the paving company, the company providing the gates and several staff, it was determined that the existing loops would be sufficient; however, they failed. The loops would have been damaged during milling to pave anyway.

25-145 MOTION: RESOLVED TO award the Recreation bid for four (4) new light posts for the new Mini Golf Course from the reserve capital budget to New Horizon Lighting in the amount of $3,710. The quotes obtained are as follows: 1. New Horizon Lighting - $3,710.00 2. Warehouse Lighting - $4,515.43 3. Wisconsin Lighting - $4,980.00 QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: Mr. Esposito requested that as Chair, Mr. Yocum insert a motion before this motion to approve the contract with Harris in the amount of $275,000 to install a new 18-hole miniature golf course with $10,000 deposit approved for this year as the agenda was already approved. Ms. Tramantano clarified that funds for the miniature golf course consist of $85,000 being repurposed from the 2025 reserve capital of POA tennis court resurfacing and $182,000 was added to the 2026 budget. It was confirmed that site work is being performed in house is to prepare a survey, demo and excavate, then filling with required material and set elevation then Harris sets up mold, drainage holes, and installing the course, leaving the landscape beautification for The Hideout. This was a committee recommendation and three proposals were reviewed ending with detailed meetings with Harris. Long-Range Planning Committee’s survey several years ago retuned a high request for improvement to the mini golf course and it is anticipated that this income will potentially be recovered in the 7-10 year range. The member requested that bids be available to the membership before the Board’s vote to members can see the details. Mr. Esposito indicated that the Board does review the information and discuss during workshop, but contract negotiations are discussed in executive session as they are confidential; however, maybe the agenda can include clickable links to the supporting documentation. Mr. Esposito reported that questions are asked, but ultimately managers are hired to give their expert recommendations. In response to a request for additional information on all projects, it was reported that much if this is accomplished at the committee level and committee meetings are open to the membership. It clarified that the Board is voted to make decisions on behalf of the membership and quality, not just price is taken into consideration.

25-153 MOTION: RESOLVED TO write off uncollectible dues in the amount of $403,430 due to repository property sales.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: Ms. Tramantano clarified that when a property owner doesn’t pay real estate taxes, after about 2 years the property goes into repository with the County Tax Assessor. When the property does sell, the liens and judgments against the property are voided and uncollectable.

Five years ago, there was over $2 million of outstanding dues for lots classified as repository. That number is now down to about half a million. Lots have been sold and turned over to new owners who will hopefully be dues-paying owners. This amount represents 33 lots.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: This is for downed trees removed from the Ski Hill. There is a $25 tree permit fee that was instituted which resulted in approximately $20,000 which goes into the general fund and this cost will be taken from those funds. It was acknowledged that this is an ongoing long-term project budgeted annually for 2,700 acres. There an emergency response team to respond to wildfires and email notifications are sent when there is a burn ban. This will also be part of the emergency voice and text notification system for voice and text when the procedures are finalized.

6) COMMITTEES Michael Terranova indicated that the CMR from Public Safety intended to include communications with outside agencies. Mr. Esposito indicated this is within his expertise so he will advocate for a comprehensive plan, encompassing all hazard, multi-discipline plan that includes several agencies.

25-155 MOTION: RESOLVED THAT members who are employees may not serve on a committee. The Committee Guidelines will be amended as follows: Members who are employees of the Association may participate not serve as a committee member, but may not serve on a committee associated with the department in which they are employed.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: This change is so the same restrictions that apply to Board members apply to Committee members as they are an extension of the Board. Sometimes there are unintentional, inherent conflicts. This change is not to address a conflict or problem, but is a recommendation from the Governing Documents Committee who reviews documents for uniformity and to prevent conflicts.

25-156 - TABLED MOTION: RESOLVED TO approve the Lakes Committee’s CMR to make the following changes to the Consolidated Rules and Regulations: Change “personal watercraft” to “powered watercraft” when referring to PWC; Add 100-foot limitation language for non-powered boats on Roamingwood Lake; Add 100-foot limitation for swimmers on Roamingwood Lake; Remove inflatable rubber raft language, originally item #3 under the 100 feet rule section, this rule is redundant to new language The Consolidated Rules & Regulations will be changed as follows: All persons in a powered watercraft must be seated while in operation.

All Powered watercraft must travel in a counter-clockwise direction.

All sailboat operators must maintain a proper lookout at all times.

All boating activity must cease on every lake during electrical storms or during conditions that may result in personal injury.

100 FOOT RULE: All powered watercraft must observe the one hundred (100) feet minimum swell speed regulations when operating near all regulating buoys.

All human powered watercraft on Roamingwood Lake are to remain within 100 foot of the shoreline.

Swimmers are to remain within 100 feet of the shoreline on Roamingwood Lake.

Moving Powered watercraft shall not overtake or pass another moving watercraft within the one hundred (100) feet minimum swell rule.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: It was confirmed that for safety reasons a kayak or canoe wanting to go from one side of Roamingwood Lake to the other, they cannot cross the lake directly and must go around in the 100-foot zone. Several members indicated that there are times for safety reasons, where the driver of a powerboat must stand for visibility.

The Consolidated Rules and Regulations shall read as follows: “Indoor court contracts are comprised of three, two consecutive month sessions: November 1 through December 31, January 1 through February 28/29, and March 1 through April 30. Contract renewals must be submitted two (2) weeks prior to the expiration of that session.”

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS: This is to ensure there is a “clean power generator” for the vital network system such as telephones, server, connections and transfer switch in the event the current generator fails as it did the last power outage. The current generator has an internal issue with the fuel pressure is being repaired under warranty.

7) MEMBER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS. Rich Yocum welcomed Lisa McKenna again, thanked the members for their attendance, and thanked the fellow Board members for their assistance today. Mr. Yocum also wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Member asked the procedure for an amendment to change the Bylaws. Mr. Yocum responded that this starts with a recommendation to the Governing Documents Committee.

Member asked when the minutes from the last Board meeting are published, will all the unanswered questions be answered in The Hideout publication.

Mr. Yocum answered that the minutes legally may only reflect motions, votes, and what actually transpired and cannot be added to after the fact. If something wasn’t answered, it will either not be answered, or members should reach out separately for the answer. The same member questioned why a request for protocol that she put as instructed at the last meeting was declined. Ms. Kennedy stated that all requests for review are required in writing and certain requests

go before legal counsel for their guidance and it was denied because it was outside the realm and scope of what is privy for review. An official request must come in before a determination can be made on whether the information could be provided and this was denied on guidance of legal counsel. Member followed-up on the protocol for the number of Public Safety patrol officers to be dispatched to a domestic dispute or gun involved incident. Mr. Yocum recommended submitting a written request. Member then questioned if records or statistics for incoming calls to Public Safety are kept and tracked and has this process changed in the last 1 or 2 years. It was confirmed that records of calls are maintained and generalized statistics, but a written request requires review to determine if these records could be shared with the requesting member.

The member then asked if the front gate project is complete and if not, are there any plans available the members can review. Ms. Kennedy explained in her manager’s report that this is a phase project, and one phase is done but beautification will be done in the spring. The final stage is dependent on PennDOT. The member then questioned if vehicle access device stickers are transferrable to the new vehicle or if a replacement is required and a fee for the replacement. It was confirmed a replacement would be required. Mr. Esposito, Ms. DiGiovanni, and Ms. McKenna feel there should not be a replacement fee. The Board will review further and pass a resolution outlining if and when a fee will be charged for replacements. The member questioned if voicemails are left for the Board do they ever return the call. Mr. Wagner clarified that just because someone is a member of the Board, they cannot

arbitrarily respond without conferring with the Board as a whole or at least the President and Chair. A Board member cannot make an individual decision or speak for the rest of the Board.

Members expressed their concern about communication and requested information regarding safety and state police presence even if details cannot be provided.

A member complained about the light at North Beach disturbing her after dark.

There are also houses that have outside lights on from dusk to dawn which are disturbing.

A member questioned if there is a liquor inventory taken as some alcohol is unsecured. Ms. Tramantano confirmed that she gets a monthly inventory from Food & Beverage. Mr. Wasilewski confirmed that a daily inventory is not performed. Transfer of alcohol is only done by Mr. Wasilewski and requires paperwork and the inventory is controlled.

Member further recommended that employees be required to drive Hideout vehicles rather than personal vehicles while performing Hideout business.

Optics were discussed by the Board as well as logistics with the Food & Beverage vehicle in poor repair. This will be researched further.

A member on Zoom requested Public Safety attend the meetings to address the concerns about safety. It was noted that Public Safety was at the meeting earlier, but is on a call. Member asked where questions can be directed if the Board cannot answer questions individually, and Public Safety doesn’t always have the answer. Mr. Yocum and Ms. Kennedy requested that any questions, concerns, comments be put in writing to the Community Manager who confers with the Board President daily and can funnel the question where it needs to

Pain Medication for Sciatica

Chronic low-back pain (CLBP) responds modestly to medications: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and short courses of opioids can reduce pain briefly, and certain agents (duloxetine, selective neuropathic drugs) show small benefits for specific subgroups — but effect sizes are generally small and must be balanced against side effects.

Evidence-based guidance therefore favors using medications as part of a multimodal strategy (physical therapy, education, behavioral therapies) with the lowest effective dose for the shortest needed duration.

Sciatica (lumbar radicular pain) is especially challenging: highquality trials fail to show consistent, durable benefit from most oral drugs, and short-term leg pain relief is often unreliable. Heterogeneous causes (disc herniation, inflammatory versus neuropathic mechanisms), variable trial designs, and small sample sizes leave major research gaps about which drugs, at what dose and timing, truly help.

Large, rigorous randomized trials are still needed.

Precision medicine — using biomarkers (blood, imaging, genetics) and pain-phenotyping — offers a path forward. Emerging studies show panels of biological and psychosocial markers can stratify patients and modestly predict who will develop chronic pain or respond to treatments.

Ongoing trials (e.g., biomarkerguided spine studies) aim to match therapies to mechanism (nociceptive vs neuropathic vs nociplastic), which could increase efficacy and reduce unnecessary exposure.

In short: current pharmacotherapy for CLBP and sciatica provides limited, often short-lived relief; best practice is targeted, cautious medication use within multimodal care while supporting biomarkerdriven research that may enable personalized, more effective treatment in the near future.

LAKEVIEW AND WOODPOINT COURT

A dangerous condition arises on busy weekends from vehicles parking on the side of the road on Lakeview and Woodpoint Court. Vehicles parked on the side of the road in this location impede traffic and could possibly block access to the area by emergency vehicles. Due to this condition the Board has passed a motion deeming Lakeview and Woodpoint Court “Emergency Access Roads.”

No parking will be permitted on the side of the road in this area. The Public Safety Department will aggressively enforce this rule. Anyone who parks in this location will be subject to a $150.00 fine and a $300.00 fine for repeat offenses.

AMENITY BADGES Members and guests of members, 7 years of age and older, MUST possess and display a current amenity badge at ALL times while at ANY of The Hideout amenities. As of July 30, 2022, MEMBERS only may substitute a mobile picture of their amenity badge clearly displaying the front of their amenity badge which includes the current year sticker, name, photograph, and lot number.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

To stay safe walking, follow these rules of the road: 1. Walk Facing Traffic When Walking on the Side of the Road

If there is no sidewalk and you must walk on the side of the road, choose the side where you are facing oncoming traffic.

In North America, this is the left side of the road. This gives you the best chance to see traffic approaching closest to you and take evasive action when needed.

2. Walk Single File When Not Separated from the Road

Unless you are on a sidewalk separated from the road or you are in a wide bike/ pedestrian lane, you should walk in single file. This is especially important on a road with lots of curves and where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you before hitting you. While it can be enjoyable to walk down the road two to three abreast chatting merrily, drivers don’t expect it and you may lose your best walking buddies.

3. Stay Aware of Bikes and Runners

Share the road and path with bikes and runners. Bike riders should alert you when approaching from behind with a bike bell or a “passing on the left/right.” Listen for them, and move to walk single file, allowing them to pass safely. Runners should also call out for passing. Bike-walker collisions can result in broken bones or head injury for either—and you aren’t wearing a helmet.

4. Be Visible

Wear bright colors when walking. When walking at night, wear reflective clothing or a reflective vest to be visible. Drivers are often not expecting walkers to be out after dark, and you need to give them every chance to see you. Be just as cautious at dawn or twilight, as drivers still have limited visibility or may even have the setting or rising sun directly in their eyes.

6. Keep the Volume Down

Don’t drown out your environment when listening to music with your earbuds or headphones. Keep the volume at a level where you can still hear bike bells and warnings from other walkers and runners.

7. Hang Up and Eyes Up

Distracted walking due to chatting, texting, or playing games on a mobile device while you walk is as dangerous as doing those things while driving. You are distracted and not as aware of your environment. You are less likely to recognize traffic danger, tripping hazards, or passing joggers and bikers. Adopt habits that can keep your phone in your pocket, or at least make it a practice to stop in a safe place to complete your phone tasks before moving on.

8. Walk Dogs on Short Leashes

It is terrifying and tragic to witness dogs running out in to traffic or getting into a fatal dog fight, whether on leash or off leash. But when walking your dog on a long leash there is also a danger that you will trip other walkers or bikers. You will keep your dog safer as well as those who pass by you if you use proper leash walking etiquette.

9. Know When to Stop Walking

Heat sickness, dehydration, heart attack, or stroke can strike walkers of any age.

Learn the symptoms of medical emergencies and carry a cell phone to dial 911.

Even if you are a seasoned and well-trained walker, you may experience one of these problems and need to cut your walk short. Encourage your walking friends to stop when they show any concerning symptoms.

10. Be Aware of Stranger Danger

Street safety is a concern for many walkers. Choose your walking route for paths frequented by other walkers, joggers, and bikers. If you see someone suspicious, be prepared to alter your course or go into a store or public building to avoid them.

Acting alert and aware can convince bad guys you are not an easy target. ■

Dogs are allowed on the Hideout Nature Trail, but please be advised there are several rocky areas, and wet/ ground soaked conditions in some portions. While the trail does have benches for resting and reflecting along the way, the terrain could prove difficult for those with young children, strollers, or any person (or pup!) not steady on their feet. The Hideout Nature Trail is a great feature to our community and a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors if you are prepared to navigate the landscape.

Local Township News Lake Township Board of Supervisors Meeting Minutes - November 5, 2025 The regular monthly meeting of the Lake Township Board of Supervisors was held at the Lake Township municipal building on November 5th, 2025. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman.

Supervisors Scottie Swingle, Robert Batzel, and Timothy Jaggars were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was then recited. R. Batzel moved to approve the minutes of the regular monthly meeting held on October 7th, 2025, carried 3-0. T. Jaggars moved to approve the October 2025 treasury report, carried 3-0.

Public Comment: None

Sub-division: 1) Lake Ariel Self Storage land development sent a request for an additional 180-day extension for review.

T. Jaggars moved to approve the extension request, carried 3-0.

Correspondence: 1) Maplewood Fire Co. provided their October activity report showing 57 total calls. They also held 5 training and work nights. They invited the Supervisors to their Installation dinner on January 10th, 2026.

2) The Hamlin report provided October, showing 120 calls and 36 in Lake Township.

Roadmaster’s Report: Scottie Swingle reported that the pavilion was winterized during October and cleaned up trees after windstorms. They have been working at the Lake School property and cleaning between the Lake School property and the Church property.

Old Business: 1) Lake School property, the engineers have sent information for the

concession stand building permit that was forwarded to BIU for review. Still waiting on Building Inspections to finalize so a building permit can be issued. The property line has been cleaned up and seeded. PPL has marked the new pole locations. Question on plans for the Lake School property noted that for more Little League games, as well as hopefully soccer in the summer/fall season. 2) Liberty property has no new updates, still holding on engineers. 3) The 2026 Budget has been proposed and presented with no new taxes. Motion to advertise for adoption at the December meeting made by S. Swingle, carried 3-0.

Entering the month of January, life can seem slow, and dreary as spring seems like a distant dream. But before we know it, warmer weather, and vibrant flowers will be upon us.

So, let’s try and enjoy these last few months of snow filled beauty that Northeast Pennsylvania provides us.

Ice fishing is prohibited on all lakes except for Brooks Lake Notification is sent community wide when Brooks Lake is open to ice fishing.

Monitor email blasts for Brooks Lake ice levels, and openings / closures.

Roamingwood Lake will remain drawn down until March 15th 2026 Firearms hunting seasons are coming to a close, but archery, and muzzleloader hunting seasons will continue through January 18th.

It is highly recommended to wear blaze orange when hiking in areas where hunting is allowed to take place.

Apps such as All Trails, or ONX are great for finding new places to hike in the area, and take advantage of our beautiful fall and winter views.

Feeding of Turkey, Deer, and Bears in the Hideout POA is strictly prohibited.

Violators are subject to $1000 fines if caught feeding wildlife *Excluding bird feeders placed 10 feet from ground level.

Community deer population surveys took place in the month of December. This consists of two nights where populations are counted on predesignated routes throughout the community.

Any deer that are needed to be removed following surveys are donated through the Hunters Sharing the Harvest program, providing thousands of meals to those in need.

This plays an important role in preserving both deer herd health,

and forest regeneration success.

Tree Planting

Dangerous Trees

As members have experienced during recent storms, many trees have come down following high winds, and heavy rains. We ask that all members regularly inspect their lots, and consider creating a plan to have dangerous trees removed from their lot. Many local tree companies advertise within the Hideabout, or with local sources that are qualified to assess safety concerns for trees.

Tree removal can be expensive, but health and safety cannot be replaced.

The POA will continue removing trees in common areas, and POA owned properties to ensure the safety of our members.

Planting a tree, especially a native tree, is a fantastic way to not only beautify, and increase your property value, but to give back to our local ecosystem.

Trees benefit us in many ways, providing clean air to breath, reducing erosion, providing habitat for animals, and much more. So, before spring arrives, here are some tips to help with your green season planting endeavors.

1. Select the Right Tree for the Location: Before planting, research the tree species that thrive in your climate and soil conditions. Consider the tree's mature size and the space available. Ensure there are no overhead power lines or underground utilities in the planting area.

8. Mulch Around the Base: Apply a 2–3-inch layer of organic mulch around the tree’s base, keeping it 6-8 inches away from the trunk. Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition, but it is important to not crowd the base of the tree with mulch.

9. Stake if Necessary: If the tree is in a windy area or has a weak trunk, stake it for support. Use soft ties to avoid damaging the bark and remove the stakes after one growing season to allow the tree to stand independently.

10. Monitor and Maintain: Regularly check the tree for signs of pests, disease, or stress.

Prune as needed to remove dead or damaged branches and encourage healthy growth.

By following these steps, you can ensure your tree has the best possible start and contributes positively to your environment for years to come.

Upon receiving a Hideout Building, or Tree Removal Permit, it must be attached to your sign post before starting any work at the property. Proper postage of permits allows our ECC department, and Public Safety to ensure that work being performed at a property is properly permitted and lawful in cases where a township permit is also required. Upon completing work, the permit is to be returned either in person, or via mail to the POA to record closure of the permit. Failure to post a permit will result in a stop work order being issued, carrying a $250 fine▪

Motion to approve the meeting minutes of 9/10/25: Approved as written. Motion: Paul Spiese 2nd Ron Phelps Committee Membership: Due to a recent change in Committee Membership rules, Committee Chairman - Mike Burns will be leaving the committee. The committee presented Mike with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors.

GOOD NEIGHBORS CLUB The Hideout Adult Social Group (HASG) believes in neighbors helping neighbors. Although the Good Neighbors Club is a function of the HASG, we are pleased to offer medical equipment to all Hideout residents.

Many people in The Hideout have donated medical equipment which they no longer have need of. These items are now being kept in a storage closet in the Indoor Sports Complex. There are lots of walkers and crutches, some canes, numerous potty chairs, and shower seats, a few wheelchairs and a scooter. If you have need of any of these for yourself or if a guest is coming for the weekend and is in need of one for that time period, you may borrow one by stopping in at the Recreation office, (570) 630-3733, and someone will show you to the storage closet.

2026 Holidays New Year’s Day

One of the great benefits of living in The Hideout is our centralized water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Our staff operates and maintains over 123 miles of water and sewer piping, five water wells, four water storage reservoirs and two water towers, 29 wastewater pumping stations, and an advanced wastewater treatment plant. As you know, these benefits do not come without cost. Most recently we have replaced all water and sewer main lines to eliminate infiltration and reduce water main breaks. The sewer and water treatment plant project is also wrapping up, which has significantly improved day-to-day operations.

We, the Board of Directors and Management of RS&W, want to continue to deliver the high quality of product and services that our members have experienced in the past. To do this, we must increase our rates. Effective January 1, 2026, developed properties will be charged a base rate of $427 per qtr. and undeveloped will have a base rate of $274 per qtr, which is a 2% increase.

(Developed property increases by $9 per quarter; Undeveloped property increases by $6 per quarter.) This rate increase will be reflected in the April 1, 2026 1st Quarter bill.

Given the current financial times, we have not taken this proposed rate increase lightly. Roamingwood has also paid off one of the capital PennVest loans that originated in 2010 which has saved $250,000.

Annual Water Quality Report 2025 The Roamingwood Sewer and Water Association is issuing the results of monitoring conducted on your drinking water for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2024. The purpose of this report is to advance consumers’ understanding of drinking water and heighten awareness of the need to protect precious water resources.
