Editors Note... When writing this editors note it does seem really early to be talking about Christmas especially when it is so warm and the sun is shining bright. However, we are now into the month of November there are signs of Christmas decorations about and many shops have already started putting their Christmas stock out. It seems that gone are those days when Spain didn't get into the swing of things until mid December. For me, I like Christmas, the decorations, pretty lights so I am all for it starting early! It also gets me into gear with starting my shopping earlier thus avoiding the mad panic a few days before Christmas day. In fact, that is what this edition is all about. This month's magazine is to help start you thinking about Christmas where to buy presents, book your Christmas Lunch or New Year Eve Party. Pages 55 to 58 are dedicated to Christmas but also many adverts show what they are offering over the Christmas period. This month there has been some sad news as a couple of well known figures in the village of Competa have passed away. Our thoughts are with their families and we are so very sorry for their loss as we knew both characters and we feel especially for their other halves at their time of deep sadness. Her husband believed the baby was his and that it had been conceived during the honeymoon but his wife confessed to the infidelity after he repeatedly questioned doctors as to how the baby could have been born with dwarfism. The woman has not been named, but according to local reports she felt compelled to tell her husband after questions were raised by friends who had accompanied her on the hen night, which took place at the beginning of the year.

ionel Messi is to face court trial for alleged tax evasion after a Spanish court rejected the Barcelona forward's appeal against his prosecution. Messi and his father have been accused of defrauding the Spanish state of more than €4 million (£3.13m) between 2007 and 2009. Spain's public prosecutor argued in June that Messi's father Jorge was responsible for the family's finances and not the four-times World Player of the Year. A court in Barcelona decided, however, Messi could have known about and approved the creation of a web of shell companies that were allegedly used to evade taxes due on income from image rights. The appeal against that decision has been rejected, according to court documents published on Friday. They have denied wrongdoing.

Facebook. Scott Kelly, 33, spent seven years in prison for stabbing a pub drinker but fled last October after he was released on probation. Rather than keeping a low profile, he often posted snaps on social networking sites, including pictures of himself enjoying a skiing holiday and others showing him relaxing in bars and restaurants with friends. He was careful to evade detection by making sure there were no landmarks in the background, but his fun ground to a halt after he uploaded a stunning photo of a sunset. Detectives were able to glean vital clues from the beach in the foreground such as a palm-tree lined promenade and distinctive architecture, which allowed them to identify it as Alicante. Spanish police spotted Mr Kelly driving around Costa Blanca last month and arrested him.

robably the idea of covering the more than 180 kilometres between Nerja and Manilva in just one day by bicycle or on foot is only for real sports enthusiasts, but it will become a possibility within five years thanks to the ‘Senda Litoral’, or Coastal Path. This project will join up the whole coast of Malaga by using existing seafront promenades and adding new paths as a means of connection. However, it will not be necessary to wait five years to be able to enjoy this new way of travelling along the coast, according to Elías Bendodo, the president of the provincial government. The fact that each stretch will be brought into use as soon as it is completed is one of the strong points of this project, which has a budget of 30 million euros and will become the coastal version of the Great Trail of Malaga, which runs through the inland region. Some of the opening dates for the different stretches have already been announced.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEEDS YOUR HELP! A plea from Action for animals Our final plea for help is one we're making in advance. Last week these two tiny newborn kittens were brought into our charity shop by a kind lady who had rescued them from the rubbish bins in which they had callously been discarded. They're currently being hand-reared by Sandiey, one of our Action for Animals volunteers, who is bottle-feeding them every few hours. Thanks to Sandiey they've been given another chance. In a few weeks' time, we're hoping they'll be strong enough to move on to their new owners. Will you be the person to give these little ones the love they deserve after such a poor start in life?

our charity shop to collect a voucher for pet sterilisation. It's that simple. It's heartbreaking to find animals thrown into the rubbish bins and there's absolutely no reason for this to happen. Action for Animals always offers financial assistance for sterilisation to pet owners who cannot afford to have their pet spayed or neutered. So please spread the word and help us to stop this cruelty.

The two kittens – one tabby female and a ginger male – have been fostered up until now by Carly Mathews and are now old enough to be rehomed.

As always, Action for Animals can help with costs should you decide to adopt any of the animals mentioned in this article.

Opening hours: 10.00-14.00 Monday to Friday and 10.0013.30 Saturday

They're absolutely adorable, running around playing together, and they even get on well with dogs. Can you give one of them (or both of them!) a loving home?

And finally, I'd like to ask you all to spread the word to your friends and neighbours. If you know they have an un-neutered animal, please tell them about our work. Ask them to call into

his month's Action for Animals page is once again dedicated to finding homes for the animals pictured here, all currently in the Cómpeta area and desperate for new owners. The three German Shepherd type puppies were found on the track between the Torrox road and Acebuchal, next to Finca Los Pinos, where they are currently being fostered by Sarah and David Mills. They are all female, now around 7 weeks old and ready to go to new owners. Can you offer one of them a permanent home?

5. The Royal Tapestry Factory at Madrid makes intricate, expensive and gorgeous tapestries which are usually based on cartoons by Goya and his brother-in-law Francisco Bayeu. Goya's originals have been displayed at the prestigious Prado. 6. If you have never visited a real flea market, consider the El Rastro which is open on Sundays for a great first-time experience with its array of odd objects right from junk to rare findings and paintings. 7. Madrid celebrates a Carnavale full of fun and frolic, weeks before Lent. Highlights of the Carnavale is the Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday when men in mourning bury a cardboard effigy of a sardine in a mock coffin by the riverside in remembrance of a tragic event that took place in the 18th century.

10 FACTS ABOUT MADRID Some unknown facts about this city.

M

adrid has been officially declared as one of the "greenest" cities in Europe. However, greenery is not its only pride. There are a lot of interesting facts about the multi-cultural, second to none Madrid. Some of the unknown facts about this beautiful city are: 1. Madrid's official symbol of the bear on its hind legs eating berries from the madroño tree is a metaphor for Madrid's growth and represents possession and ownership of wood which is necessary for constructing buildings. 2. Madrid's Safari Park has a

huge range of over 500 animals along with the aviary and reptile house. The most interesting event is the lion taming show which takes place on a daily basis. 3. Madrileños are often called "Gatos" (cats) not because of their late sleeping habits similar to cats, but because of the historical legend where during the Arabic invasion, an adept soldier climbed the outer walls with the agility of a cat; after which, his family assumed the name of Gato. 4. Madrid has a wonderful openair pool, the Aquasur, with five giant slides and is a favourite hotspot visited mostly by kids and youngsters in the summers.

8. The Bullfighting Museum (Museo Taurino) gives visitors an insight into the art - its history and changing trends in dressing style. What few people know is that it also displays the costume worn by Manolete who was gored to death at a young age in Linares's bullring. 9. Spain's answer to Disneyworld is the Warner Brothers Movie World at Madrid which is open for six months in summer and has five themed parts namely Old West Territory, Hollywood, DC Super Heroes, Cartoon Village, and Warner Bros. Studios. 10. The famed Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain's modern art museum which is home to Picasso's masterpiece 'Guernica' and pays tribute to great artists of 20thcentury Spain had once been named as "the ugliest building in Spain" by Catalan architect Oriol Bohigas. n comparison to conventional heaters, infrared waves don’t heat the air, but do heat people, walls and furniture. You absorb the heating waves which makes you feel nice and cosy. Walls and furniture store the heat much longer than air and then release it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another

advantage is that the air does not circulate, therefore no dust is lifted up into the air. Partial Storage Heater saves energy Redwell® Infrared Heaters are so called Partial Storage Heaters. Infrared is wellness warmth We humans have evolved with the capacity to absorb infrared heat, which in turn has a beneficial effect on our immune system. In Japan 1967 Dr. Tadishi Ishikawa designed the first model of an infrared cabin. This system was initially only used by doctors. In 1981, the Infrared sauna for general public use was released. Since then it has proved very successfully in the private sector as well as by professionals such as doctors and therapists in clinics and spas, to support their treatment. Infrared heat increases circulation in the skin, stimulates the metabolism and is very hygienic due to cleaner air. Rheumatoid patients respond to a lack of air circulation and a consistent humidity is very positive. Asthmatic patients also benefit from clean air and stable humidity. Allergy sufferers can breathe a deep sigh of relief because there is less dust, pollen, bacteria and mould spores in the air. WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Strange News from Around the World

R

obin Hoods” who watch over motorists' cars in New Hampshire, US are a lifeline to some, but a nuisance to the town's authorities. The town's supreme court will now try to settle an ongoing dispute between parking attendants and the sixstrong liberatarian group. Footage shows instances where the group pump money into parking metres and print out new stubs for soon-to-be-expiring tickets. Last year, the Robin Hoods estimate, motorists saved $80,000 (£50,000) in fines because their activists got to the meters first.

F

amily heirlooms belonging to Agatha Christie have fetched almost £50,000 at auction - after being discovered by a fan of the crime writer. The jewellery, which was initially valued around £10,000, was sold at auction in a Bonhams Jewellery sale in Knightsbridge, central London, on Wednesday. It was uncovered when Jennifer Grant, a fan of the Miss Marple novelist, bought an old trunk containing a strongbox for £100

16 The Grapevine

during a 2006 sale of the contents of her home, Greenway, near Brixham in Devon. Mrs Grant left the strongbox locked and bolted for four years but then asked builders working on her home to use a crowbar to open it to see what was inside. To her amazement, Mrs Grant saw a purse of gold coins, a diamond brooch and a three-stone diamond ring - described as heirlooms in Christie's autobiography. The ring, originally estimated at up to £5,000 sold for £21,875 at auction, while the brooch, estimated to fetch up to £8,000, reached £27,500. Carole Gordon, head of jewellery at Bonhams Knightsbridge, said the story of the jewellery's discovery was "wonderful". "We are very pleased to have been able to offer these two fine pieces, coming as they do not only with an illustrious provenance but with such a wonderful story of discovery by the vendor," she said. "The astonishing prices achieved today are just the icing on the cake".

man who gambled his home to build his own £300,000 private toll road to bypass road works has welcomed his 100,000th vehicle. Mike Watts, who was exasperated by the hour-long detour caused by road works, is charging £2 a time to use his bypass made from chippings and avoid the closed section of the A431 between Bath and Bristol. The Kelston road was shut in February following a landslip and officials say it will not be repaired until the end of the year. Mr Watts, 62, who lives on the Bristol side of the landslip, opened his toll road – which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week – on 1 August after coming up with the idea in his local pub.Mr Watts asked his friend John Dinham if he would rent him the field until Christmas and hired three workmen to help build the road in just ten days. The 365 metre long road cost £150,000 to build, and another £150,000 to maintain including manning the toll booth. It is the first privately run toll road to be built since cars became a familiar sight on British roads more than 100 years ago. Mr Watts initially feared losing his home if he did not recoup the cash by Christmas, but has already raised two-thirds of the amount.

L

ondon cyclists could have a new means of navigating the city, if plans to construct a floating cycleway along the Thames come to pass. A proposal from the River Cycleway Consortium Ltd (an organisation founded by the architect David Nixon and entrepreneur Anna Hill), the seven-mile “Thames Deckway” path would stretch along the south bank of the river from Battersea to Canary Wharf. Cyclists would save an estimated 30 minutes on their journey if they were to travel from one end of the route to another, versus the time it would take to travel between the two destinations when cycling on public roads.

ALBARINO WINE A relatively new Spanish Wine

A

lbariño wine hails from the Rias Baixas region in Galicia in the northwest of Spain, just above Portugal. This region produces some of the most exceptional white wines of today, and it is lush and verdant. Albariño wine Albariño is often likened to Riesling for its minerally qualities, and many wine experts argue that the two are in fact the same grapes, with the theory being that Riesling was brought to the area by German monks who were at the time establishing monasteries. The regulatory council of Rias Baixas disagrees with this theory however, insisting that the grape is indigenous to Spain. The wine is also similar to Viognier due to its aromatic qualities of peach and apricot. Albariño is relatively new in terms of Spanish wine, having taken off in the late eighties. It became a very fashionable wine to drink in Madrid at the time and was

18 The Grapevine

expensive until further vineyards were opened and prices were reduced. It's still not cheap, and is unlikely to ever be cheap, due to the ripening challenges faced in the region. Pairing with food The climate of Galicia is damp and cool compared with the rest of Spain and this means that there are difficulties to be faced in terms of getting the grapes to ripen. This does however allow the wine to hold a delicious acidity, which means it goes very well as an accompaniment to fish and seafood. Pair the wine with Antipasto, smoked fish or shellfish, backed goats cheese, chicken pate, Bouillabaisse, fish stew in general and brie and camembert. These foods are widely accepted as good pairings but are by no means exhaustive. Don't be afraid to make up your own rules either; drinking this wine with food is for your own enjoyment and so do

not be put off by wine snobs who look down on making unconventional wine/food pairings! Good wine is also very enjoyable when drunk by itself. Characteristics This wine is a pale white with hints of green in it. It is mediumbodied and has a peachy aroma with a firm freshness. Albariño is best drunk very cold and while it is still young. Other uses The grape is often used in Portugal, where it is known as Alvarinho, as an ingredient in Vinho Verde, for which the Portuguese blend it with the Loureiro grape. Some good quality bottles of Vinho Verde have been produced in the last few years, and they boast a bright acidity and zesty grapefruity character. Written by: Dominic Donaldson

many more. Several mosques remain, from the colossal structure of 1,000 columns in Córdoba to an intimate building on a hillside at Almonaster la Real in Huelva province. While the magnificent Alhambra palace of Granada is the Moors' most impressive architectural legacy, the humble flat-roofed dwellings on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada are a direct inheritance from the Berbers of North Africa. When Córdoba was a flourishing city 1,000 years ago, it spawned a series of notable intellects: philosophers Maimonides and Averroës, jurist and historian Ibn Hazm, Abdulcasis, author of the first illustrated book on surgery.

FROM BANANAS TO FLAMENCO The Moorish Legacy

W

ords like alcohol, cotton, elixir, nadir, zenith, almanac, zero, jasmine, saffron and coffee have nothing special in common - except their origin. They all have their roots in Arabic and their arrival in our vocabulary date back to the time of the Moors, those invaders who stormed across the Mediterranean 13 centuries ago to lay siege to Europe. The Moors - a term that includes Arabs and Berbers - left an indelible mark on southern Spain in particular. Travel through the region of Andalusia today and you will come across traces of their influence wherever you go. Spanish words like alcázar, alguacil, arroz, aduana, alcalde, naranja and azúcar are a part of

that legacy. But so too are architecture, irrigation systems, customs. The Moors brought to the Spanish peninsula (and over time to the rest of Europe) new crops such as bananas, almonds, apricots, peaches, aubergines and cucumbers. They also imported the Arabian steed and a new view of Aristotle, astronomy and medicine. Cordoba Mosque Across Andalusia you will find place names inherited from the era of the caliphs, along with crumbling fortresses, horseshoe arches and brilliant ceramics. Minarets survive, converted into church towers when the mosques were torn down. Seville's 94metre-high Giralda is the most striking example but there are

And then there was the extraordinary ninth-century musician and trend-setter, Ziryab. Born in Baghdad in 789, he was known as Ziryab (Blackbird) because of his dark complexion and fine voice. The songs he composed were said to have been "dictated by the angels". He changed eating habits in Córdoba, ordaining that courses were no longer served haphazardly but in strict order, fruit and nuts coming last. And he introduced the fifth string to the Arab lute, contributing to its development into the six-string guitar. Arab music strongly influenced flamenco and the cries of "Olé!" at a bullfight are almost certainly related to the "wa-Allah!" the Moors yelled during poetry recitals. The Arabs also introduced paper to Europe and Arabic numerals, which replaced the clumsy Roman system. The next time you add up your shopping list imagine doing so in Roman numerals scratched on dried sheepskin. Written by: David Baird

however, year to year the average temperature of the region can change drastically. Predicting when to harvest the grapes every year is quite difficult, adding more work to maintain the high quality. Therefore add an extra bump in the price. Champagne makers also hand pick the grapes and grade every single grape in quality. Add in the regal prestige of Champagne (for example the first bottle of Cristal was made specially for the Czar of Russia in the late 1600's and never became publicly retailed until the early 1900's) and Cava never had a chance to compete prestige-wise after it was first made. Poor Cava never had a chance it seems.

SPANISH CAVA WINE - A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO CHAMPAGNE? Definitely cheaper but better?

C

ava Wine was developed in the 1860's after a wine maker, Josep Raventos, discovered this sparkling wine in the Champagne region of France. He loved the crispness and the dry yeasty taste displayed by the sparkling wines and wanted to create his own in Spain in the same method as the French used. The Spanish sparkling wine he eventually created he called "Champรกn," Spanish for "Champagne" which would become the name for these Spanish sparkling wines until the European wine makers union forced the Spanish wine-makers to change their name. They eventually did so to "Cava," the Spanish word for cellar, which was usually where the Cavas were stored. In essence, these Cava wines are

40 The Grapevine

not that much different compared to French champagne. Why is Cava wine then so much cheaper than champagne generally? For one, French champagne is way more popular. Ever heard of Dom Perignon? Cristal? Exactly. Basic economics of supply and demand mandate that Champagne can be priced higher due to increased demand. Add in the many dollars (or Euros) thrown in for the marketing of champagne to maintain the association of Champagne with glamour and the price can be bumped up even higher. The more money put in to get the wines sold, the more they can charge. Another reason perhaps? The climate of the Champagne region in France where the grapes are grown is generally colder

Until this current economic downturn. Cava was flying under the radar for quite a long time. People were even buying it in the States without even knowing it was not Champagne but, Cava. If you have ever bought "champagne" from Freixenet or Cordoniu then you really bought Cava. Some people even consider Cava to be better than Champagne which is really no surprise. The warmer and more consistent climates that produce Cava can actually make the grapes more ripe, therefore better for wine production. The grapes are even handpicked and graded in the same fashion as the French yet the cost is drastically lower. To put this all together, there is a strong potential that for a much lower price Cava wine could be a better buy than actually buying French Champage, and even American "champagne." The method of production, the hand-picking and quality grading of the grapes, and the Cava wine-making regions themselves can lead to a much better sparkling wine than what people expect. Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN solution We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver, (Chrysopogon Zizaioides) It is used for stopping erosion and the grass has a huge vertical root system and grows to about 1 meter with roots 3-4 meters deep. The plants are 1 euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 100 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. The roots grow 3-4 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel To view many interesting links about Vetiver Grass, it’s uses, youtube demonstrations and much more, please visit our website.

ROASTED CHILLI FRITTATA The best frittata ever?

INGREDIENTS 4–8 chillies, a mixture of green, red and yellow 1 red or green pepper , optional 1 tbsp red wine vinegar olive oil 6 sprigs flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked, stalks finely chopped 1 knob of butter 5 large free-range eggs 1 handful of grated Parmesan 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped 100g goat's cheese, or 100g feta salad leaves, to serve METHOD This frittata is a meal in itself. You can make it with a mixture of chillies and a pepper or try it with double the chillies. Serve it up with ham, prosciutto or bacon for a damn fine breakfast that will set you up for the day. Preheat your oven to full whack. Prick each of your chillies and the pepper (if you're only using 4

60 The Grapevine

chillies, you'll need the pepper to bulk up the filling) with a small, sharp knife, then blacken over a gas flame, in a dry griddle pan or under a grill. Once they're nicely charred, pop them in a bowl and cover with cling film. After 10 minutes, remove the skin, stalks and seeds, then delicately tear lengthways into thin strips. Put these strips back in the bowl and add the red wine vinegar, a lug of olive oil and the parsley stalks. Heat a lug of olive oil and some butter in a small ovenproof frying pan, then add half of your marinated chillies and the chopped garlic. Meanwhile, beat the eggs in a bowl with some grated Parmesan and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Put a few of your parsley leaves to one side,

then finely chop the rest and add them to the eggs. Pour the eggs into the pan then crumble in half of the goat's cheese or feta. Move the pan a bit to spread everything around. When the egg is just starting to set, crumble over most of the remaining goat's cheese, then pop the frittata in a hot oven for 5 minutes or until it doubles in size. Some people cook their frittatas all the way through, while others prefer them only just done. Once it's out of the oven, delicately drape the rest of your chilli over the top, crumble over the last few bits of goat's cheese or feta, then drizzle over a little of the chilli marinade. Sprinkle with the reserved parsley and serve with something fresh and lovely, like a rocket, lemon and Parmesan salad.

premium on boys — does not bother this remote mountain community on the Sichuan-Yunnan border. The sign on the road towards Lugu Lake, home to the Mosuo ethnic minority, reads: 'Welcome to the Kingdom of Women'. Girls rule from birth, becoming heirs to family fortunes and later going out to work for the clan. Boys stay at home, living with Mum indefinitely, and leave only on invitation to visit local matriarchs in what are known as 'walking marriages'.

Ghent, Belgium Peta, the animal-rights group, ruffled feathers last summer when it announced that the best place in Britain to be a vegan is Glasgow. Those who know the vibrant Scottish metropolis more traditionally associated with lipidic excess were less surprised, but for an even greater meat-free nirvana, go to Ghent. This tiny Belgian city has more than a dozen vegetarian restaurants, by some measure the highest number per capita anywhere. Moreover, Thursday is a veggie day, when many other restaurants, as well as schools and offices, serve food that's fresh but not flesh. Meet an alien.. Chile Forget Area 51. In a remote region of central Chile, you are more likely to bump into an alien than anywhere else on the planet. Such has been the number of UFO sightings around San Clemente that in 2008 it opened a 19-mile alien trail which weaves between plateaux used as landing pads. Signs offer details of close encounters of the third kind. A word of warning: encounters of the fourth kind — alien abductions — will not be covered by most travel insurers. Be a woman... Have a beer... Ypres, Belgium Booze and religion rarely feature on the same page but for the monks of the Middle Ages, beer formed an important route to self-sufficiency. Ten recognised Trappist breweries have survived centuries of revolution and war. The best? Westvleteren Brewery, inside an abbey in Vleteren near Ypres. Monks here produce three beers, including a habitshakingly strong ale, which frequently tops rankings of the best in the world. But you'll have to travel — sales are made weekly at the doors of the monastery to individual buyers after reservation. Get married... Shanghai, China Pity the singles of Shanghai, whose parents often resort in desperation to posting lonely-hearts ads for their children at People's Park. For a fee, placards are posted not online, but on lines tied between trees. It works like internet dating — if you let your mother manage your profile. Yet in a city where it's all too easy to be lonely, the weekly love market has produced countless auspicious

Be gay... Spain A rainbow ribbon is drawing together the world's more enlightened nations as dozens, including the UK, plus several states in America, pass equal marriage laws. Even so, some countries are more equal than others. A Pew Research Centre survey asked people in 39 nations the simple question: should society accept homosexuality? Spain topped the list with a score of 88 per cent (Britain scored 76 per cent, America 60 per cent). Gay couples have equal rights at every level of society, while Spanish LGBT culture has become an important export. See the Northern Lights... Staff perk? Lunch-hour surfing off Hilton Beach. Be single... Berlin, Germany Germany is home to more solo habitations than any other country in Europe — about 37 per cent of households, making Berlin, where the figure rises above 50 per cent, the capital of self-sufficient living. The city is not known for its fluid dating scene, but now a vintage shop in Neukölln hosts monthly 'tongue-tied' events in which 20 singletons engage in silent speed dating. Sometimes words are not enough. Snap a selfie... Makati, the Philippines If there were a map of #selfie obsession, it would centre on a hitherto unheralded city within a city. The phone-toting residents of Makati in Manila, the financial centre of the Philippines, are to blame for posting the highest number of hashtagged selfies per capita to Instagram (the forum of choice for auto-photography). According to analysis by Time magazine, there are 258 selfietakers per 100,000 people, more than in New York or Miami, which came second and third in the rankings. Colombia Tear up your lottery ticket, ditch your bonds and abandon your dreams of entrepreneurial triumph. Shop around instead for a deal on flights and you could travel from London to the rarefied climes of Bogotá for £1,000 and keep enough change to become an instant millionaire. At the time of writing, £312 is all you need to buy a cool million Colombian pesos. Don't spend it all at once. Avoid the sun... Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada There is a place in the northern reaches of British Columbia where the clouds part so infrequently that sufferers from sun allergies have been drawn to resettle here. Prince Rupert lies just 30 miles south of the Alaskan border. Home to First Nations communities, leaping salmon, orcas and giant bears, it's also the wettest place in Canada — and an unlikely burgeoning tourist destination. Get naked... Croatia As visitors to Croatia's coast soon discover, its famous beaches, including Zlatni Rat, are a big draw for naturists. Package holidays for the immodest abound, sending beach bums to nudist resorts and even cruises clad in nothing more than carefully applied SPF30. Littleknown fact: long before Bradley Cooper became huge in Hollywood he presented the odd travelogue for American television. Google his name with 'Croatia' and 'nudist' for a most revealing look at the country (and the actor). Do nothing... Ngapali Beach, Burma It would be perverse to travel as far as Burma, a country that had for so long been off-limits to the ethical tourist, with the intention to do very little, but an itinerary that winds up on Ngapali Beach offers a littleknown reward to those who have explored the transforming Southeast Asian country. Secluded

by mountains on Burma's west coast, the deep strip of white sand joins the azure waters of the Bay of Bengal with a resort that is at its busiest when the daily catch comes in. Like the rest of Burma, it remains relatively off-radar — enjoy it now, as it is likely to become a more popular destination as resorts crop up. Hitch a ride... New Zealand Anyone who has stood at the exit of a motorway service station, as drivers ignore your cardboard plea for a lift, knows just how dispiriting hitchhiking can be. But when it's good, there is no more enriching (nor cheaper) way to get a sense of a place and its people. Where best to thumb it? Ben Bachelder spent years after he graduated from university in California hitching in 35 countries and six continents including Antarctica. His tip: New Zealand, where hitch rate is high and drivers are friendly to a fault. Retire abroad... Malta Retiring types can migrate towards the not-so-bright lights of the south coast... or keep going for a couple of thousand miles to Malta. The Mediterranean island just south of Sicily topped an assessment of the pensioner-friendly prospects of 20 countries, taking into account house prices, food and healthcare costs, crime and tax. Plus it offers 3,100 hours of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 19°C. Lovely. Write a Pulitzer-prize winning novel... Yaddo, USA Most writers toil at their desks in small rented flats, peering hopelessly into the anticipatory glare of a decrepit MacBook. A retreat is an afternoon in a coffee shop. But, given the choice and (even less likely) the funds, there are places better filled with inspiration and promise. Yaddo is a country pile for creatives in Saratoga Springs, New York, where John Cheever and Saul Bellow are among 70 writers and composers to have stayed before winning a Pulitzer prize.

BE COMFY WITH COMFREY! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

C

omfrey is a magical plant! It nurtures plants, animals, insects and humans alike and is remarkably disease-free itself. It makes wonderful compost, fertiliser and mulch. Things don´t get much better than that! Every gardener should have a comfrey patch and especially if you are organic. Comfrey is one of the best investments for a healthy and

84 The Grapevine

productive garden. Most people reach for a quick fix when their plants are ailing but quick-release fertilisers will only promote lots of lush sappy growth - a banquet table to aphids and a breeding ground for fungal disease. Far better to slow feed your plants; maybe they won´t be quite so big and lush but they will be healthy, strong and softly glowing with health. In fact, we could all do with some of that!

Symphytum officinale, or Comfrey, is a perennial plant with deep roots that go way beyond the reach of most plants so they can find nutrients and minerals in the subsoil that other plants cannot. Its large hairy leaves also contain more proteins than any other plant, 22%. Comfrey leaves are extremely rich in nitrogen and potassium with a reasonable amount of phosphorus too. Found naturally fringing

riverbanks and other damp areas, it will also grow on drier ground. The piercing roots, up to 4m long, will survive most conditions.

goats will all gorge on it. And bees, that so much need our help at the moment, will nuzzle into the drooping lilac-blue flower-heads.

There are three basic ways to use this super-plant. Try a clump at the side of your compost heap; it will mop up excess nutrients that leak out from the compost and you can then recycle some of the leaves back into the compost. The cut leaves break down very quickly, transferring their nutrients back into the compost heap and encouraging speedy decomposition. There´s a delicious simplicity in this, no complications, no additions, just Mother Nature doing what she does best – or perhaps it just appeals to my simple mind!

But comfrey can do far more; it is a traditional medicine for humans too. Its other name is knitbone. Its powerful healing properties help the body to repair damaged tissue and bones by stimulating cell division, effectively repairing quicker, and reducing inflammation. There has been some controversy over comfrey because it does contain poisonous substances (as do many plant-based medicines) that can be toxic to the liver when ingested. Thus, in many countries, it has been banned for oral use but it is still recommended for external (short-term) use as a poultice or ointment for wounds, broken bones, muscle strains and fractures. As with all medicines, continued or long-term usage is not advisable. So, after hearing of all these benefits, I´m sure you´re wanting to get planting. Plan carefully - it is important to select a suitable site. Comfrey is an exceedingly tough perennial plant. It has very deep penetrating roots – though not wide-spreading - and a new plant can sprout from a tiny section of root so, if you ever want to get rid of it (though I can´t think why) then you could have a tough time. In a wetter climate than ours, it can become very prolific – some might even say weed-like – but our drier conditions act as a perfect control. Severing the roots can cause it to spread, so don´t cultivate around your comfrey patch and it will stay contained. Belonging to the same family as borage, the hairy leaves are irritating to some, so always wear gloves when handling.

The second method is to spread the leaves as mulch. Like other mulches, it slows down evaporation, keeps soil moist and helps suppress weed growth. Because the leaves rot down so quickly they give a boost to shallow rooting plants and especially heavy feeders like tomatoes, roses and fruit trees. Deep rooting comfrey does not threaten shallower rooting fruit trees, for instance, but will provide a very rich potassium feed. As a surprise bonus, the wilting leaves are irresistible to slimy predators so they can be used as bait to keep slugs and snails away from valuable plants like hostas and soft crops such as lettuce. Thirdly, use comfrey leaves to make a liquid fertiliser – comfrey tea. To do this, fill a container with leaves and top it up with water. Stir now and again. After 2 to 3 weeks the green-brown sludge smells vile but that is a sure indication that the proteins are breaking down and the brew is ready for use! Strain it and use the liquid, diluted 1:10 – either foliar spray or water directly into the roots. The left-over slurry at the bottom of the container works wonders on the compost heap. Smelly but powerful stuff! Most animals love comfrey – chickens, ducks, sheep, cattle and

Plant in partial shade and give an occasional deep watering during hot weather. Leave it to establish during its first year. In the second plant or make root cuttings. year, harvesting starts when the plant is 0.50m high or starting to

develop flowers. Simply cut down the stems to 10cm above ground level. Give the plant a good soaking and it will soon regenerate. Thereafter you should get four harvests per year, amounting to some 2kg of leaves per plant. That´s a lot of leaves! If you want to increase your comfrey crop, lift and divide the original plant or make root cuttings. I believe we are the only Garden Centre in Iberia stocking comfrey plants. ART EXHIBITION Local artist Margaret Riordan has two art exhibitions until march 2015 at Bar Choto Playa on the n340 at Peñoncillo Beach, Torrox costa, (not tues). (next to ruta 34 motorcycles shop) and in Restaurante Sevillano – El Rincón, Calle gGoria, Nerja. Margaret is self-taught artist (retired secretary) and was born in Bristol, England, she hasbeen painting and drawing all my life. She has entered many competitions with success at local and national level and over 300 of her works have been sold throughout the UK, Europe and North America.

TORROX QUALITY AWARDS Two Torrox beaches have been awarded the Q for Quality standard. The Spanish Tourism Quality Institute (ICTE) awarded the Q for Quality to Playa Ferrara and Playa El Morche in Torrox. The thorough work carried out by the council with the counsel of AMACVA, Spanish acronym for

the Enviroment and Quality of Life Association in Axarquia, has allowed the town to pass the audits conducted by ICTE before awarding the Q for Quality. Councillor Ramirez appreciated the work done by the municipal services and said they work every day, all year round, so that local beaches look their best. This is not the first time that the quality of Torrox beaches has been recognised. In fact, Playa Ferrara and Playa El Morche had already been awarded the SICTED quality tourism certificate given by the State Tourism Office and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.

FUNDS FOR AXARQUIA The Central Government is to allocate more than €26 million to the Axarquia. According to figures from the General State Budget (PGE), recently made public by the Ministry of the Treasury and Public Administrations, the Axarquia is to be allocated more than €26 million in 2015. The funds are to be invested in a series of projects and programes. The allocation of PGE funds takes into account that tourism is one of the driving forces of the economy in western and eastern Costa del Sol, so €12.5 million is to be used to improve Malaga beaches, said Medina. “Let us not forget the great potential of the Axarquia coast, from Rincon de la Victoria,

Velez-Malaga and Nerja to Algarrobo and Torrox beaches,” he added.

THE MOUNTAINS OF NERJA The book “The Mountains of Nerja” written by Jim Ryan was launched on Friday, 3rd October at the Cultural Centre in Nerja. The author, Jim Ryan; the Tourism Councellor, Bernardo Pozuelo; and Comunication and Fundrainsing Manager, Rocío Torres attended to the presentation. The author´s royalties from the book will go to Cudeca Hospice, which will help to continue to provide “adding life to days” through our “special kind of caring” – palliative care to advanced cancer patients and their families throughout the province of Malaga. DRUG RAID The national Police have confiscated a large amount of drugs and weapons in a raid on a farm in Velez Malaga. Officers seized 8,900 marijuana plants, an automatic rifle, two handguns and ammunition in a greenhouse on the farm in Velez Malaga. The anti-drug operation resulted in the arrest of two suspects, a 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, according to a police statement.

Presented once again in collaboration with the Foreign Residents Department at Nerja Town Hall, the event is always a great attraction as dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds enter the parade ring to vie for the trophies on offer. As well as the competitive classes, there will be demonstration of obedience and ability by the Dog Academy, plus stalls to browse in a friendly, family atmosphere. Dogs can be entered in one or more of the 12 classes to be judged this year. These include the best pedigree and nonpedigree puppies under one year, the best pedigree and on-pedigree bitch over a year, and the best pedigree and non-pedigree dog more than 12 months old. And this year, there's a new class for the best veteran dog or bitch aged ten years or more. The fun classes will include the best obedience or trick displayed, the dog with the waggiest tail and,
