The month of September for me marks the end of the summer mainly because the children go back to school and the weather cools a little. For many September is their favourite month of the year with beautiful weather, whilst being a little cooler, less tourists around, easier to park, cheaper to stay, cooler evenings and easier to sleep, so a lot to look forward to! This month Cómpeta holds the annual walking festival from the 21st to the 24th of September. This year there are several new fantastic walks however the principle will stay the same. Each day there will be the choice between an easy walk of ± 3 – 4 hours or a moderate walk of ± 4,5 – 6 hours. The Cómpeta Walking Festival is a great way to discover the beautiful walking area and to meet old and new walking friends. Please see pages 56 and 57 for more information and to book a walk. Looking forward a little, Canillas de Albaida hold their cultural week at the beginning of October and on Sunday 8th there is a Multi Cultural Night of Music in La Plaza, entry is free, but there will be some opportunities to donate to local charities in the area see pages 62 and 63. So please mark this date in the diary as it has been a huge success in previous years due to the great line up of music and live bands. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

endangering flight safety. Spanish authorities have not yet confirmed any charges. Raúl Delgado, spokesman for Malaga's air traffic controllers, said the laser beam "enters the cabin and starts bouncing off the windows, hampering the pilots' view of the instruments, causing much interference just when great concentration is needed for landing". In the UK, the number of such incidents was 1,258 last year more than three a day on average. The UK government is tightening the law to tackle the many dangerous incidents, envisaging prison terms for offenders.

T

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

T

he Tagus river, the longest in the Iberian peninsula, is in danger of drying up completely as Spain once again finds itself in the grip of drought. Miguel Ángel Sánchez, spokesman of the Platform in Defence of the Tagus, says “the river has collapsed through a combination of climate change, water transfer and the waste Madrid produces.” The Tagus, known in Spanish as the Tajo and Portuguese as the Tejo, rises in Aragón in northern Spain, passes close to Madrid and forms part of the border with Portugal before flowing into the sea at Lisbon. En route, it is dammed no fewer than 51 times in Spain alone. But its troubles begin at the headwaters in Aragón. In 1902 a plan was conceived to siphon off water from here and divert it to the Segura river to irrigate farms in the arid southeast in what is known as the Tajo-Segura transfer. Construction began in 1966 and water started flowing out of the dammed Tagus headwaters to the Segura in 1979. However, the

8 The Grapevine

amount of available water was miscalculated and Spain’s cyclical droughts were not factored in. Today only 47% of the predicted water resources exist and levels in the two headwater dams are down to 11% capacity, too low to allow any transfers.

S

panish police say they suspect a British man and his son of pointing green laser beams at incoming airliners on the Costa del Sol - an offence that can incur an enormous fine.An off-duty police officer reported seeing them aiming laser pens at jets from a hotel balcony in Torremolinos, near Malaga. The British man is 41 and his son 15, police said (in Spanish), giving no further details about them. Three pilots reported being dazzled. They told the Malaga airport control tower, on Spain's south coast, that green laser beams had troubled them as they prepared for landing. If found guilty, the two British holidaymakers could face a fine ranging from €30,001 (£27,280; $35,425) to €600,000 for

hree times as many migrants have arrived in Spain so far this year compared to the same period in 2016. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says It means the number of sea arrivals in Spain - at 8,385 - could overtake Greece, which has had 11,713 people. The shift may be because migrants are finding the Spanish route safer. Last month footage showed migrants arriving by dinghy on a beach in Cádiz to the surprise of beach goers. The IOM say 11,849 people have arrived in Spain so far this year, compared with 13,246 in all of last year.

S

pains Guardia Civil has stopped a coach carrying 60 passengers and arrested its driver after he tested positive for drugs in a routine roadside check. The coach was carrying around 60 passengers from Hinojosa del Duque (Cordoba) to a day at the beach in Benalmadena (Malaga). The 35-year-old coach driver gave a positive result for cannabis in an alcohol and drug control check and was detained by the police. The coach continued its journey to the Costa del Sol after a replacement driver was found. He, too, was subjected to a roadside check and he tested negative for drugs and alcohol.

CHICA LOCA Hair and Beauty Salon in Competa

T

his month I spoke to Heidi that recently took over Chica Loca in Competa. Chica Loca has been a Hair and Beauty salon for a few years now but under different management. It is located on the left hand side as you come into the village of Competa just before the car park; it is a prime location for passing trade and has easy access for parking. Heidi is originally from Finland and taking over Chica Loca was an opportunity that presented itself at the right time for all parties involved. Heidi came to Spain 15 years ago where she lived in Benalmadena and worked in a traditional Hairdressers/Barbers shop in Fuengirola. She came to Spain initially with her Mother who is also a hairdresser and had her own salon back in Finland. It was in her mother's Salon that provided Heidi with a fabulous amount of work experience whilst studying at the same time. Heidi attended Hair and Beauty school in Helsinki where she learnt about everything to do with hair, nails,

28 The Grapevine

make up and special effects. After graduating she worked for her mother but they decided to explore outside what she described as “dark and cold Finland and come to the Cost Del Sol for what was planned to be a year. Although her mother returned to Finland Heidi stayed and is still here 15 years down the line!

with the previous owner of Chica Loca at the end of last year who was looking to go back to the UK, Heidi expressed an interest in opening up her own Salon. After talking it made sense for Heidi to take over a readymade salon and customers that would hopefully stay and support Heidi. So at the beginning of this year Heidi took over and hasn't looked back. She Fuengirola has a small Finnish is extremely grateful to those that community and Heidi found work have stayed with the Salon and easily, first working for someone supported her. She talked about then renting a chair and then later her really lovely customers and running her own business. Over whilst her son is happy in the area the years and one son later she she wants to continue living here decided to move inland to provide as she is extremely content doing a better environment for him to what she loves. One of her great grow up in. Heidi moved five years interests is that of extensions. You ago to Corumbela where she said can have them fitted in the salon everyone was so welcoming and it or you can order them off her has provided a great place for her website. She also hopes to son to grow up. Over the past five provide make up round the years while her son was small Christmas time and provide acrylic Heidi kept home based or nails and extensions in the future provided mobile hairdressing and along with eye lash extensions. So beauty in and around the area look out for her new services including visiting old customers in towards the end of the year. Fuengirola. See advert opposite. On a chance meeting in Competa

CHANGES AT SUGAR AND SPICE AND TODO PAPEL The two shops bring a better International food service to Competa.

So big changes are afoot?

it makes a lot of sense.

So what will change?

S&S From 4th of September 2017 the food section of Sugar and Spice will be managed by and based out of Todo Papel.

TP I don't know why we didn't think of it before. The larger floor and shelving space in Todo Papel gives us more flexibility to change things seasonally. Christmas springs to mind as an example.

S&S We will look to increase the food range. Todo Papel get a lot more passing trade than we do, so it will be interesting to see what the demand will be for. We always like the challenge of finding different products. When we opened I vowed that we would never sell instant mashed potato, maybe that will have to change.

What drove the change? S&S The reoccurring message we hear from our customers is "Why can't you move your shop to the bottom of the hill?" So we have! Well part of it. Clearly we have a lot of customers in common that visit both shops so

34 The Grapevine

S&S Yes, we've always been proud of our Christmas selection and this year it will be amazing

TP For our part, as we have already announced, with regret

we will no longer continue to sell newspapers and magazines. For some time we knew this change was going to happen at some stage with dwindling sales. In this technological age people now get their news instantly via their various apps on their phones and other mobile devices. The purchase price of the international papers and magazines has also meant that these have become more of a luxury purchase rather than an everyday one that they used to be. The opportunity to take on the running of the Sugar and Spice food business has meant that we instantly have a replacement. What we will be looking to develop is the PO Box service which has now been in operation for five years. We currently have 270 boxes and hope to increase this amount to 300. We will still offer the courier parcel receipt business for people who don't have a PO box with us. We will also look to expand the range of greetings cards and associated products. So how long have the 2 shops been open now? TP We opened in September 2005, so purely by chance this major change will correspond with our 12th anniversary. S&S Yes, and we opened the following December. It seems like a long time ago now. In those days we sold books too anything to make a living! A tourist once came and said "Books and food? That's strange". I replied "Well it works for Tesco!

fashions. Recently we have had customers travelling from Madrid, Montpelier, Lisbon & Seville to see our products after viewing our lacasabella.es web page, we want to have as much lovely stuff there as possible to make their visits worthwhile. So I can see this change will benefit the customers. How will it benefit you two? S&S Our customers have seen very little of us in the last year or so. I would like to say at this point we have not been on holiday! With the furniture business delivering and meeting customers takes up a lot of time. Projects have become a large part of our business. Designing and supplying anything from 1 room or terrace to complete interiors. They have taken us as far West as San Roque and East to Mojacar. Both of these are 3 and a half hours from CĂłmpeta. Often we have to travel to Morocco. Marrakech is 8 hours from Tangiers. So basically the changes will give me more time in my van! TP We think it will streamline our business and we can concentrate on other core profitable parts of it. We also feel we can help to develop the Sugar & Spice food range as has already been covered with greater footfall due to our location and steady stream of daily PO box holders coming in to collect their postal items. Customers will be able to pick up their post as well as their curry sauces, baked beans and Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire Puddings!

So is the Sugar and Spice shop in calle Cazadores closing?

So what does the future hold for Sugar and Spice?

S&S No. We use the space freed up to display more furniture, home decoration, giftware and seasonal ladies

Building on and adding to the ranges of beautiful things we already sell. We are seeing more and more demand for Moroccan products. We have built a great

To advertise call 637 028 873

network of contacts over the last decade and now work with the Moroccan Artisan Board in Tangiers, who support the Artisans within their trades. Without this support centuries old skills are in danger of being lost. We love the products and the people of Morocco, so it is really nice to be involved. We often take photos of the products in-situ in our customers' homes and send them to the trades people. They really enjoy seeing the fruits of their labour being used and enjoyed. The downside of this element of our business is the difficulty importing from Morocco into Spain. We take shipping within Europe for granted, most weeks we receive a delivery of pine and Indian solid wood furniture via the UK with minimum fuss. Shipping from Morocco is very different. It is the gateway to Europe and these are turbulent times, the paperwork is torturous and the security tight, it isn't easy. And the future for Todo Papel? We will continue to strive to offer customers a broad range of products and services. As well as the products and services we sell we do tend to be a place where people come in for information and advice, particularly anyone new to the area, as we have been here for over 12 years. Debbie will be the face you will see most in the shop as Alick continues to develop his and his business partner's web based estate agency business, Brogan Properties. Alick will be in the shop from time to time to keep his hand in! Any further planned changes? Loads, some of which are already underway...

Mountain Wine & Music The story so far

Bodegas Bentomiz, the winery above Sayalonga, has been hosting a series of summer concerts. They’ve had wonderful artists perfoming there, from Pianist Thomas Kaurich to flamenco dancer Marina Aranda, to the extraordinary jazz-flamenco fusion of La Bejazz. Guests enjoyed wine, tapas and glorious sunsets as well as unforgettable music. The photos above, by Margot Hillock, give an impression of these extraordinary events. There are still two to come: 2nd Sept Flamenco instrumentalist Diego Villegas and 23rd Sept Ellas, a quartet of women playing tribute to the great Jazz divas. Jorge & Kiko, Colmar, France

The Montoro Brothers Torre del Mar to Copenhagen by bike!

I

dentical twin brothers Kiko and Jorge Montoro from Torre del mar set off on a 2400kilometre bike ride to Copenhagen in mid July. The plan was to cover 2400 kilometres by bike over a three week period, aiming to cycle between 100 and 160 kilometres per day and arrive in the Danish capital on 14 August, then rest for ten days and then participate in the famous Compenhagen Ironman Triathlon. The triathlon consists of a 3.9k swim, 180k bike race and finishes with a full marathon. The triathlon alone is considered a formidable challenge with most triathletes training for 6-9 months before the event. The combination of the 2400 Kilometres bike journey to Copenhagen and then the triathlon makes it an awesome feet of endurance both physically and mentally.

54 The Grapevine

So why do it? The brothers have both been through medical scares. They were both diagnosed with brain tumours in 2013 and have since recovered from operations to remove them. This has been one of the main motivating factors for the brothers to embark on this challenge. They are known locally as excellent athletes, both are PE Teachers at schools in Malaga, both are exceptional triathletes representing local triathlon and sports club CD Axarlon, also as well as teaching they own a personal training fitness company.

20th July 2017 To launch the challenge, the brothers organised for family and friends to bid them fair well in Torre del Mar. After a speech by the Mayor and some press interviews they set off at 9.30am for Almeria surrounded by 30+ cyclists that were to accompany them for some of the journey on the first day. Myself and Jansen Riley from Competa were lucky enough to be in that group of cyclists, as we had previously arranged to join the brothers on the entire 1st day to Almeria.

Once we arrived at Almunecar the group had shrunk to just the four of I first met the brothers at a triathlon us. We continued onto Calahonda where we greeted by their old friend in the Sierra Nevada a couple of years ago. They were both friendly Trapi. He kindly let us store our and welcoming and it is easy to see bikes in his apartment whilst we why they are popular characters in went for a swim and some lunch. At 5pm and now joined by Trapi we the local sporting community. left to cover the final 100 Kilometres along the impressive coastline to

Almeria. We finally arrived at around 9pm and quickly showered and changed and proceeded to a nearby bar for some dinner and to meet up with more of their friends. We ate extremely well! Jorge explained that they needed to take on an whopping 6000 calories a day to fuel the journey. The following morning they pushed on, with a further 136 kilometres supported by some more local friends. Meanwhile Jansen and I made the return journey to Torre del Mar. During the next three weeks they kept friends and family updated daily via a facebook page that boasted an impressive 8000 followers. and finishing the 3.9k swim in 1hr-04 minutes. Next was the 180 kilometre bike leg that consisted of two loops through the rolling countryside that surrounds Copenhagen. Even with rain on the second loop Kiko averaged an speedy 35.5 km/h whilst Jorge was just behind averaging 35 km/h. Running a marathon is tough enough, but running a marathon in an Ironman race is about survival and crossing the finish line. At the 4k mark Kiko slipped and injured his foot but continued on. Jorge crossed the line first in 10hrs -19 minutes and Kiko a little later in 10hrs -45 minutes.

I am of course referring to the crime and thriller genres of fiction. John Yorke (one of Britain's film and TV writing gurus) describes crime fiction as being like good story, boiled down. That is, it shamelessly contains all the elements that make us want to keep turning the pages and that keep us hooked.

WRITING AXARQUIA A Journey Into Darkness

I

recently had the pleasure of flying back to Malaga during peak holiday season, an experience many of you will be familiar with. On the plane I found my seat covered in sticky popcorn, I was surrounded by a number of large and very loud ladies attending the same hen party, and one man got so drunk that he couldn't walk down the central isle without collapsing onto many of the people unlucky enough to have an isle seat. So, nothing unusual, you could say, but amid this urban carnage we call the Great British Getaway, something else dawned on me. It started at the airport in Blighty. I popped into WHSmith to buy a book and to photograph the shelf it was on. No, not because I have some eccentric, Jeremy Corbyn photographing manhole covers thing going on, but because the author of said book is a friend of mine and I wanted him to see that there it was on the shelves at the airport. Anyway, in walked two girls, 20-somethings who had probably been dieting for the last three months to be beach-toned and holiday ready. 'I need to get a book,' one of them exclaims. 'I can't go to the beach without a book.' 'This one,' the other girl says, 'It's a thriller. Really good.' Waiting at the gate I pulled out my own book. The person next to me was also reading a paperback, someone opposite was engrossed in their Kindle and a parent and child

58 The Grapevine

were glued to a movie playing on their phone. It was the same on the plane. I was surrounded by people choosing to bury their awareness in something other than their present reality. Or, to put it another way, to lose themselves in a story. Of all the things one could assert about human nature, it seems to me that one of the most difficult to refute would be that people love stories. So much so that even when on an annual holiday where the opportunities for new real-life experiences are everywhere, a huge proportion of us will still choose fiction over real life. There have been many theories about the importance of storytelling in human psychology: it's the way we learn to relate to our world, the way we come to understand our desires and those of others, the way we come to terms with our mortality, our hopes and our fears. However, I find it curious that when people look for a book to take on holiday, they overwhelming choose the same type, and it's a genre that, even away from the holiday context, outsells every other kind of fiction. It's also the genre that consistently gets turned into popular TV dramas and blockbuster movies. Easy to get into? Check. Scary or gruesome? Check. Lots of drama? Check. A mystery? Check. A romantic subplot? Check. Certainty that it will all work out in the end? Check, check.

What about romance novels? I hear you cry. It's true, these are also popular amongst holiday makers and those in search of a thrilling read, but name me a romance novel that doesn't contain an element of danger, lots of drama and some kind of mystery. If you can, I bet it won't be a bestseller. There is little doubt that for most people crime and thriller stories are enjoyable to read, or indeed to watch. It just so happens that they are also fantastically fun to write. There's never been a better time to get into writing fiction. The growing popularity of short stories means that no one need be intimidated by enormous word counts. For the past two years I've been writing and editing my own thriller novel, while at the same time completing a crime novel writing MA at City University in London. I will be sharing some insider knowledge, tips and tricks that I've learned along the way during a workshop at Casa Paco in Competa this autumn. You don't need to have been a high achiever at school as you can develop your writing skill as you go along. All you need is a pen, notepad (or computer) and a desire to bring your criminally good ideas to the page. LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER Some Good Advice!

S

un exposure is responsible for many skin changes that we think of as a normal part of the ageing process. Apart from sunburn which is immediately obvious, even short-term exposure to UV rays will gradually damage the elastin fibres in the skin, causing it to sag, loose elasticity and tear more easily. Premature wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and sun spots are also unwanted side effects of spending too much time in the sun. UV rays come in two types: UVA rays are less intense but far more prevalent. They occur during all daylight hours even on cloudy days. They penetrate the deeper layers of skin and are the main culprits for causing wrinkles and sun spots. UVB rays are less prevalent and their intensity varies according to geographic location, season and daily weather conditions. They are responsible for damage to the surface layers of skin and cause the redness and pain we normally associate with sunburn. Sunshine and Vitamin D We all need to spend time outdoors daily as this is the only

72 The Grapevine

way that our bodies can produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient needed for bone and immune system health among many other reasons. Until recently, vitamin D deficiency was believed to be a problem only for those living in countries with long winters and few daylight hours. This is not the case. Our sedentary mostly indoor lifestyles certainly play a part in this, but the overall reasons are more complex and likely to involve other genetic, metabolic and environmental factors as well. This calls for a sensible approach to spending time outdoors during the summer months: make the most of the warm weather in the morning or early evening, but do not ignore traditional advice about the use of sunscreen and staying indoors during certain times of the day. It’s good to remember that our bodies were designed to cope with a range of weather conditions and the skin is quite resilient, but we have to provide it with the right building blocks in order to stay healthy and repair itself when needed. Skin care tips for summer Hydrate – water is vital for healthy skin, so remember to drink plenty throughout the day.

But don’t think you have to stick to plain water – it’s no coincidence that so many delicious summer fruit and vegetables have a high water content: stone fruit, berries, melons, cucumbers and tomatoes are some easy options to stay cool and hydrated during hot weather. Exfoliate regularly to help the skin’s natural renewal process and to prevent clogged pores Moisturise – the sun, wind and air-conditioning can make the skin feel overly dry. Eating a balanced diet will help with this and using a good quality moisturiser regularly will restore moisture and suppleness to the top layers of skin. A good summer moisturiser should be based on easily absorbed natural oils high in vitamins A, E and F which have soothing, hydrating and collagen restoring properties. Antioxidants – vitamins C (found in most fresh fruit and vegetables) and E (found in nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables), green tea and berries protect against and even reverse sun damage. Remember to feed your skin from the inside out so try to incorporate as many of these into your daily diet as you can Stay indoors during peak UV radiation hours – these will depend on season and where you live, but during summer in Australia this generally means staying in between 10:00am and 5:00pm. And yes, this also means going to the beach either in the early morning or early evening Sunscreen – if you must be outdoors in the middle of the day, wear a wide-brimmed hat and long loose clothing. Choose a sunscreen based on natural (such as zinc oxide which protects against both UVA and UVB rays) rather than chemical active ingredients, apply 30 minutes before sun exposure and regularly thereafter. Use natural self-tanning lotions instead of sunbeds or sunbathing for hours.

he lovely andalusian horses at Los Caballos del Mosquin are ready to take you out for a ride this summer. Situated between Competa and Canillas de Albaida in the Axarquia region, right on the doorstep to the natural park; "Sierras Almijara and Tejeda" - with a view to la Maroma to one side and the mediterranian to the other side, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a variety of horseriding experiences.

Even if it is high summer, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a

range of possibilities for horseriding during the summer season. You can enjoy riding out early in the morning or enjoy sunset from the back of a horse on tracks out in the beautiful national park. For the unexperinced rider, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers shorter rides every day, and for the rider seeking more challenges - besides the daily tours, there are special rides out - like for instance the "BuenaVista Ride" every saturday and sunday. This is a half day ride with a picnic stop.

Do you feel a little rusty with your riding skills? Los Caballos del Mosquin also offer a "brush up" in the new and bigger riding school. Many riders like to combine the two things and that can be a lovely combination of a little more tempo in the school and a very relaxed riding out in the nature of Andalucia. We did not plan for any foals this year at Los Caballos del Mosquin, but our mare Farina looked a little out of shape, and when our vet found the mare pregnant with a possible new foal in July, everybody was really surprised when a lovely filly was full born on March 14th. Come and meet our "Sorpresa con H" - the sweetest foal of the year, and have a coffee or a refreshment under the Algarrobo tree. For more information: caballosmosquin@hotmail.com

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Summer Snaps!

A

s another summer bites the dust and we all return to work, lorry-loads of plants are arriving daily at the garden centre, re-stocking us after our end of July sale. It´s an exciting time with lots of new additions to our regular stock items. I've come back stuffed with memories of the lovely Cadiz coastline and the laughs we had! Merv always despairs of my navigational skills and they are somewhat wobbly, I happily admit. I'm a member of the “you only have to turn me around once and I'm lost” school. And few understand my attempts at directions; that the Glorieta de la Paz for me is dragon tree roundabout; Avenida Andalucia becomes silk tree street or meet you on the corner of Calle Peru and Calle Bolivia is flamboyant (by name and nature) tree corner. But this summer the joint prize for sensationalism has gone to two

The beautiful waxen coral pea-like flowers are often seen from April through to October, opening in cycles. Again it makes a small tree, sometimes reaching 5m tall in its native habitat but often to only half that size in our gardens, and it has attractive glaucous, semievergreen leaves. Belonging to the legume flower, its roots are nitrogen-fixing and the flowers are much appreciated by the local insect life. It needs a full sun position and becomes used to hot and arid conditions but is a little tender so look for a protected position. The hardiest of the coral trees, it's usually shown as hardy down to around -5C but cold conditions can burn the tips of the spiny branches and, around Cómpeta and equivalent, it will generally need some light pruning

COSTA ANIMAL SOCIETY Press Update Scruffs! Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12.00pm until 5.00pm. Guaranteed to be a wonderful afternoon, there will be prizes for 12 different categories, including Waggiest Tail, Best Rescue Dog and the real nail-biter, best Sit and Stay. Food and beverages will be available along with several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts. If you are interested in having a stall please ring Scott on 603 416 632. At 2.00pm there will be a dog walk with several animal rescue groups parading dogs ready for adoption. Punta Lara CAS Quiz The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is looking forward to the monthly quiz being hosted by Mark and staff at the Punta Lara Bar starting this autumn. We would like to invite our regular quizzers and all newcomers to a fun evening out which raises much needed funds for abandoned dogs and cats in our area. The first quiz will be held on October 20th at 7:30pm and will continue every third Friday of each month throughout the winter and spring. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced booking is recommended by calling Mark at 635 369 673. Happy Tails –Flying Partners On August 15, Agatha, the last of the pound puppies taken on by the Costa Animal Society (CAS) back in March, flew to her new home in Norway. Agatha and her siblings were rescued from the Nerja pound and were then cared

for in kennels until they found more permanent places. She has now settled in with her forever family and is enjoying living in a real home for the first time in her life. An essential part of rehoming animals abroad is finding volunteers to be “flying partners”. This is necessary as no animal can fly without an accompanying passenger. The process of travel is very easy. If you happen to be flying to Norway, as in this instance, we will arrange the paperwork for the accompanying dog or cat with the airline. A volunteer from the Costa Animal Society (CAS) will meet you at the airport around two hours before take off. Generally there are only about four spots reserved for animals per flight and the airlines are eager to get this issued sorted. In most cases you will be able to jump the queue and then be accompanied by the volunteer to the security screening area where the travelling crate passes through inspection. From that point on you'll only have to go through security and head to your gate while the animal is taken aboard. Arriving at your destination, you will be met by volunteers awaiting you in the arrival area. A hearty handshake, a few photographs and the dog is transferred to the local volunteers to begin a new life in a loving home. For more information regarding Flying Partners, destinations, airlines and procedures, please contact CAS on 952 52 9670 or via our website www.casnerja.org. *Another option for volunteer work is to drive the animal to the airport

to meet its flying partner. If you are leaving from Nerja you can arrive at the airport in under an hour, deliver the dog, occasionally having to help wheel it to security, and once done, you're on the doorstep to IKEA, for better or worse. It should be noted that dog travelling crates are quite large so you'll have to check to see if you have space enough. Seacrest Hog Roast Kurt and Laura at Seacrest Kennels and Cattery in Nerja will be hosting their 12th Annual Hog Roast BBQ in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday September 22 at 8.00pm. This event is always a fun evening to mark the end of summer with music provided by DJ Kapt'n Krap. There will be a fun raffle and all proceeds from the night will go directly to helping abandoned dogs and cats in our area. Entry is €20 per person which includes a hog roast buffet, complimentary salads and vegetarian options with a half bottle of wine. Booking in advance is essential. You can reach Laura and Kurt at 95 252 1426. CAS Shop News The Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. To ensure a good turnover in our clothing stock we now have a colour coded pricing system. When we change colours every six to eight weeks the old colour ticket items go to half price. Bargains galore! With summer (somewhat) behind us, our shop will resume its normal opening hours, Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 2.00pm. We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to join our shop volunteers. One four hour shift once a week makes a big difference. For more information you can ring the shop on 689 314 350.
