CAR REPAIR: KNOW YOUR FLUIDS Keep your vehicle longer from costly repairs

ar repairs are important to the upkeep of your vehicle. The various fluids used in a vehicle are essential to keeping each piece of machinery working properly, and extending the life of the vehicle. Keeping track of the fluid levels, and checking for leaks is a good preventative method for taking care of a car and preventing expensive car repairs later. Car repairs are important to the upkeep of your vehicle. There are about six different vehicle components that use some type of fluid, and each of these fluids should be checked periodically. Sometimes there may be a slow leak, which can cause problems further along if anything has leaked out of the system.Oil is used as a lubricant for the inside of the engine. It is essential because it keeps the metal parts of the engine lubricated and clean, so it is important to keep the oil fresh and replenished. On most cars, oil changes should be scheduled every 5,000 miles, however, the vehicle owner can

check the oil level, and its color by simply taking a look at the dipstick at any time. The oil dipstick is a direct line to the oil reservoir, it is marked with the appropriate level, and the oil should fall within those areas; the lubricant may need to be replenished if it falls below the indicator marks. It is best to check the oil levels while the car is cool to avoid a false reading. While the engine is cool, it is also good to check the antifreeze; antifreeze circulates through the cooling system and keeps the engine from freezing or overheating. Checking the antifreeze is as simple as looking at the reservoir, which sits next to the radiator. The hydraulic fluids for the brakes and steering wheel also come in a reservoir underneath the hood, however, they can be checked while the engine is hot or cold. Brake fluid levels should never change, it is simply used as a hydraulic to transfer energy to the brakes; have an auto technician check for leaks if the

reservoir is low. Power steering fluid transfers power through the steering lines, and should be refilled if the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn; a low reservoir will eventually do major damage to the steering. The reservoir is also located under the hood, and is clearly marked with the appropriate levels for a hot or cold engine. The transmission fluid should only be checked if the engine is running. Similar to oil, a dipstick goes directly to the transmission reservoir; it is also marked for the appropriate fluid levels. Maintaining proper fluid levels is a simple task that can prevent major car repairs. The trouble is people enjoy their lifestyles and want to be slim also; something has to give and the constant indecision is what leads to the yo-yo effect. Peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; misconceptions about losing weight is that once they have lost it they can stop the diet and the exercise, the truth of the matter is that to maintain your weight you now have to find the right balance between calorie intake and calorie usage.

Here are three things to consider before taking up walking: 1. Always consult with your doctor. You may well feel perfectly fit and healthy but as a precautionary measure always check with your doctor, he may be able to advise you on a good structured schedule that you will be able to follow. 2. Get yourself a pedometer. A pedometer is a device that counts the number of steps you have taken and then will calculate the distance you have walked, a brilliant little piece of equipment, and really cheap as well. But don't go setting yourself a minimum distance to walk, look to set yourself walking goals and targets extending them as you become fitter and fitter. You never know, you might actually start to lose even more weight! 3. Wear the right attire. Once committed to walking for weight management ensure you are always as comfortable as possible by wearing comfortable shoes and clothing, a pair of ill fitting shoes or clothing that causes discomfort are the most likely reasons why people give up walking as a health activity. FROM FANTASY TO REALITY Artist Jo Dennison displays a Retrospective Exhibition

rom the 26th of September to October 14th the English Textile Artist Jo Dennison will be having a Retrospective Exhibition in the Salon de Actos del Ayuntamiento Competa. This is a unique opportunity to view the work of an textile artist and to meet her personally, since she will be present every day during the 3 weeks exhibition in the salon below the town hall.

on her own work. Andalucia had a richness of tradition, history and culture that attracted her. First she lived in a finca at the 'campo'. Later on she moved to a village house with a very large workshop in the pueblo 10 years ago. Over 20 years many more artists have come to live in this area in and around Cómpeta. Many have shared exhibitions from Marbella to Salobreña. Jo only considered a solo exhibition when asked by Cómpeta Ayuntamiento.

Jo Dennison was born in 1936 in the Midlands in England leaving there for the south when she was 22. From childhood she had always drawn and painted, made puppets and costumes, read fables, legends and folk stories. She trained as a teacher receiving Distinctions in Art and Literature. She has always been curious about the lives of artists, the way their work changed over the years, the courage of many in experimenting and producing work that challenged the traditional. Jo retired early from teaching in order to concentrate

Her Art Works are designed to hang on a wall, some are very large, all have a story to tell. Her work is inspired by literature, world affairs, fantasy. Her textile works are always pictorial. One piece, took her a year to complete, the others 6 or 3 months. Large hangings have to be made in several parts. The initial design is enlarged and often roughly painted on paper to emphasize color and movement. Colored fabrics of many kinds from cotton to velvet are selected, they are blended with

both hand and machine embroidery, no adhesive is used. Usually small in size these are patched together to give variety of color and texture. Organzas and nets are used to give transparency and gleams of light. This part of the preparation can take many hours before stitching even begins. There can be many subtle changes to the initial design, this makes for creativity tot the last stitch. The colors are vibrant, many have a movement you feel as you put your finger tips on the fabric. She will dye fabrics in multi-colours to have a regular supply of different tones. Texture is very important. She collects scraps of all sorts fabrics and patch them together and mixes velvets, cottons, sacking, string, wools, canvas-whatever feels right. At this stage the Workshop becomes very untidychaotic to an observer. She has to work flat on a large work table and it is important to hang it upright to check the impact of the work. Trying to work about 20 hours weekly Jo prefers a Monday to Friday routine in her workshop. In order to establish calm out of what could be chaos. Jo is never satisfied with a work when it is finished. Then perhaps after 3 months she looks at it with fresh eyes and thinks ´it is not so bad after all'. Her recent work is affected by world events and social problems. At first this worried her, she felt she should produce work to lighten the heart of the viewer but if she ordered herself to do that she would lose her creativity. Curiosity and creativity, the urge to experiment, not to be afraid of failure but to learn from it. Competa is a beautiful white washed mountain village, and always worthwhile a visit. The Exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 11a.m. to 2p.m. Jo expects to be there most mornings and working. www.jodennison.net

MANAGING YOUR PAIN You may be given a range of pain relief in patch, pill or liquid form. For those sudden spikes of additional break through pain, ensure you have Breakthrough Pain Control provided in lollipop or tablet form both meant to dissolve in the cheek or under the tongue for immediate relief. If you still experience problems then ask to be referred to the Pain Clinic – Clinica del Dolor at the Regional University Hospital (Carlos Haya) Malaga for a review of your pain control. PRESCRIPTION FOODS There are quite a few companies that make these foods, they are expensive and are available from chemists. There is a large range of flavours and are packed in

trays of individual drinks, all one flavor. Meritene make a powder (similar to Complan) that can be added to soups etc. Normally if a Doctor thinks the patient will benefit from replacement drinks they will be prescribed. The prescription has to be countersigned by the health authorities so will take a few days to be approved. Many people complain that they are not very palatable but provide all the nutrition needed while someone is getting over the effects of treatment which has affected their appetite impeding them eating a normal diet (nausea & vomiting, surgery etc.…).

HOME HELP Registration at the local Health Centre gives medical GP cover (primary care) and referral to specialists at the hospitals (secondary care). There is no District Nurse service in Spain. Home care is provided by private arrangements. Options can be found in the section Help and Support.2 There is a Law of Dependence (La Ley de Dependencia) which can be accessed through the Health Centre’s Social worker (for Competa Residents, Social Worker Maria can be found at the Ayuntamiento every Monday and appointments can be made via Reception) which provides a little home care (it takes around a year to be approved and consists of grants for residential care & home help a couple of days a week).

Last year the concert had to be postponed for several days due to rain, hopefully that won't happen again this year as it is a bit earlier. KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING GREAT Invest some time and care!

veryone wants to have younger looking skin. Unfortunately, even the most expensive skin care products, with all their claims of 'reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles', can't turn back the years. However, don't despair! There are steps that we can all take to make sure our skin looks healthy and vibrant and stays wrinklefree for longer. All we've got to do is invest some time and care in looking after it.

It is important to understand the basic function of our skin in order to look after it properly. The skin is our body’s largest organ and comprises three major layers:

The Subcutaneous layer: This layer consists of areolar and adipose tissue. Fibres from the dermis extend down into the subcutaneous layer and anchor the skin to it. The subcutaneous layer, in turn, attaches to underlying tissues and organs.

The Epidermis: This layer has five sub-layers; the outer layer consists of mainly dead cells which are continuously shed and replaced by cells beneath. The epidermis is also responsible for ‘water proofing’ your skin, protecting your skin

The Dermis: Is the ‘middle layer of the skin and is composed of connective tissue containing collagen and elastin. The dermis is thick in the palms and soles and very thin in the eyelids. It contains blood vessels, nerves, glands, and hair follicles.

Aging of the skin There are several factors influencing how quickly our skin ages, ranging from genetic

factors, your natural skin type, as well as external factors such as exposure to sunlight, environmental factors and whether you smoke or not. In general, pale skins wrinkle faster than darker skins, which are protected by increased amounts of pigment and lipids. Another vital factor is, of course, our age. Our skin looks and functions very differently at 20 as opposed to when we are 60. Below is a skin care plan of how to look after your skin as the decades go by and how to adapt your skin care regime accordingly. Looking after your skin in your 20s Your 20s is a great time for your skin. You've left behind the adolescence acne and your skin has a radiant, youthful glow and the epidermis is well toned. However, this is not the time to be complacent. In your 20s skin cell renewal drops by up to 28 per cent, dead skin cells are not as

easily shed and external factors are starting to have a greater impact, leaving your skin slightly duller. According to dermatologists, 80 per cent of all aging can be directly related to exposure to sunlight. Therefore, it is a good idea to avoid the mid-day sun, or if you have to be out in the heat of the day (especially in countries like Australia), than cover up. Penetrating UVA rays will start to damage collagen fibres and elastin coils in your skin. Smoking one factor you can control and now would be a good time to quite. Smoking inhibits oxygen getting to the outer layer of your skin and has a premature aging effect. In addition, smoking can cause fine lines around the mouth over the years and this is to be avoided – if you want to keep your good looks. Looking after your skin in your 30s By the time you get to your 30s skin cell turnover has slowed. Environmental damage from pollution, smoke and sunlight are starting to take their toll on the dermis, causing collagen fibres to loosen so that skin starts to loose its tone and develop fine lines and wrinkles. When you smile, subcutaneous fat forms ridges and refuse to bounce back as readily as it once did. Your first wrinkles may start to appear. By now you should have established a daily skincare regime that involves exfoliating (two or three times a week), cleansing, moisturising and sun protection for your skin. In your 30s, it's important to maintain a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and fish, which are high in antioxidants such as Vitamins A, B, C and E. These Vitamins counteract free radicals in your body that help the skin to repair itself, produce the enzymes that

stabilise collagen production, and stay moist and healthy. For further protection, try using a day crème, such as one that contains vitamin E, for example: Wildcrafted’s Age Defying Essence. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with whitecolored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Stipa gigantea

s summer days start to mellow just a little, there are probably no group of plants that reflect this better than the grasses. They glow and glint through the lower rays of the sun turning our gardens into magical places as if touched by fairy's golden paintbrush! Some of the best are the wonderful stipa family. There are around 300 of them so let´s take a closer look at stipa gigantea and stipa tenuissima, two of the best. The name 'stipa' is derived from the Greek 'stuppeion' meaning fibre – stipa tenacissima gives us the well-known and much utilised esparto grass. Stipa gigantea, golden oat grass or giant feather grass is the golden giant of the grasses and we are very lucky to be able to grow it so effortlessly. You will see it all around us as it is a native of southern Spain, Portugal and northern Morocco.

It thrives in the sharply-drained stony soil of our scrub-covered hillsides yet we use it little in our gardens. Pity, because with just a minimum of care it can look magnificent. Those thin narrow leaves mean that the plant loses little moisture through transpiration so is a true survivor; wild winds just pass through it – better, it whirls wildly to the battering and buffeting and sways and shimmers in a light breeze. Deep green foliage erupts into a sheaf of oat-like flowers held high on 2.5m light green stems during May and June. The panicles start an unusual purple-green colour, gradually developing into the rich old gold that we are more familiar with. This is, probably when it is at its best, its moment of golden glory. With a low evening sun backlighting the entire plant, it really does glow. As summer advances and the seeds are spread, you might expect it to start looking a little tired but the

golden oat grass is tougher than that. Right through autumn and into early winter it carries on glowing, changing hue with every nuance of the sun. On those very rare occasions that we get a touch of early morning frost, the entire plant is white-edged. In spite of being so tall, it never overpowers because of its lightness and transparency. Try using it singly or in groups of three, it is more eye-catching that way rather than bulked. Plants can be lifted and divided every three years or so in early spring. Stipa tenuissima, Mexican feather grass or silky thread grass is a much smaller relative but equally stunning with its delicate yet dramatic looks. It has bright green filament-fine leaves that tumble and spill like a fountain, maturing to a bleachedout blonde colour. Its whiskery, soft and silky tawny panicles are a delight throughout the summer months. This American native forms clumps which will reach a

stipa tenuissima

maximum of 0.60m x 0.60m. Use it as soft and swirling ground cover under taller plantings. Again, it is tough, becomes very drought resistant and with its elegant good-looks makes a great softening plant to hard architectural plantings like palms and yuccas and mellows hard edgings of paving, gravel etc. These two stipas should be planted in full sun and they are perfectly happy in poor and welldrained soil. Try and select a position where low sunshine can highlight their beauty; they both have a long good-looking season. Do not spoil and pamper them too much, they´ll likely die on you if you do! Maintenance is straight forward; simply cut the plants hard in early springtime – as simple as that! Whilst this pruning can be done during winter, it's nice to leave the spent flower plumes for the seed-loving birds and for the lovely patterns created by low winter sunshine. heads can be used in flower arrangements, simple wreaths etc. The easiest method of pruning is to tie up each clump with a piece of string and then cut with a pair of garden shears or a hedge trimmer. The cut bundle can then be disposed of easily. Their slightly tatty overcoat will soon be replaced by bright green fresh foliage. These two grasses are also fairly invincible to pests and disease, rarely suffering with any problems though overwatering can make them rot. We have both of these grasses in stock at the garden centre along with many other drought-resistant plantings – come and ask us for our advice! WORLD'S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING The World's Biggest Coffee morning returns to Competa and this years event is on Friday, 30th September from 11am at Café/Restaurante/Bar Lorena. MacMillan Cancer Support started this idea in 1990 and it is now their largest fundraising event, last year raising over £27 million across 220,000 different coffee mornings. It is estimated that over 6 million cups of coffee together with over 12million slices of cake were served on the last Friday of September last year!!!! This is Competa's fifth annual event so keep Friday, 30th September free and come and join us. This years will be even bigger and better, remember all those delicious homemade cakes last year, I can't promise you 12 million but I know we will offer an excellent selection. There will also be Liz's terrific tombola table, a raffle stall plus other fundraising activities eg.. Guess the Beans in the Jar sponsored by Sugar & Spice. FROM FANTASY TO REALITY COMPETA. From the 26th of September to October 14th the English Textile Artist Jo Dennison will be having a Retrospective Exhibition in the Salon de Actos del Ayuntamiento. This is a unique opportunity to view the work of an artist as she progresses, develops, experiments and takes risks. Her Art Works are designed to hang on a wall, some are very large, all have a story to tell.

The colours are vibrant, many have a movement you feel as you put your finger tips on the fabric. All Kinds of fabrics are used and blended with both hand and machine embroidery. The large and very old carpenters´ shop in a street near the main square is Jo´s Workshop.This exhibition is at the request of the Ayuntamiento and the Salon de Actos, is on the first floor of the building with wheelchair access. PARALYMPICS HOPE A disabled sportsman from Velez-Malaga is to be the only representative from Malaga Province in the Paralympics this year.
