Editors Note... . Last month Competa had a record amount of visitors to the village not only because of the Easter holidays and processions but also due to the annual Art Walk. In our opinion, the organisers of this event deserve a medal for their hard work and dedication. The white village and local businesses within have a lot to be grateful for as the Artwalk attracts so many more tourists to the area. So a huge heartfelt thank you goes to Lieuwke, Frank, Judith and Martin for all the preparation, organization and their time and all the artists that participated, we sincerely hope this annual tradition will continue for many more years to come. .

This month we celebrate Día del Níspero which is undoubtedly the biggest celebration in the village of Sayalonga. Its declared “A Celebration of National Tourist Interest”. This celebration is held each year on the first Sunday of May, in the middle of the harvest when the fruit is ripe and in all its splendor. This important day also includes free tastings of products derived from the fruit, such as medlar jam or medlar liquor, and other typical local products such as wine from the land. The full program can be seen on our face book page Grapevine Magazine Axarquia. .

Don't forget there is a Spring Craft and Food fair on Wednesday 3rd May between 10am and 4pm at Viveros Florena Garden Centre located on the Sayalonga/Competa road. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

wo Britons are being held by the Spanish authorities after police discovered a haul of synthetic drugs "80 times stronger than cannabis". The drugs were found hidden inside sacks of socks in Alicante, south-east Spain, The Local reported. It is understood that the drugs were discovered following a major operation launched by Spanish police into drug trafficking at Alicante airport last month. One person was arrested at a bar popular among Britons at El Campello, just outside Alicante. A man was also arrested at Alicante airport, where he was allegedly trying to escape the authorities. The sex of the other person held by the Spanish authorities has not been disclosed. The 12.2kg (26lb) stash is estimated as having a street value of €3.5 million (£3 million). According to the police, the drugs appeared to contain "a strong synthetic cannabinoid" whose effects on the body were "80 times stronger than that of one gram of traditional cannabis". The drug was first dissolved in water, before being sprayed on to a cigarette. The two suspects, aged 36 and 37, are currently in police custody.

Choose a lighter mascara for the sprint months, too. If you apply mascara, you want to focus on a product that is high in quality. Many people like to use their eyes as the focal point of their face. You can make or break that look using mascara. Go for lighter texture and even a lighter color if possible.

Makeup Tips for Spring

S

pring makeup tips are an important part of maintaining healthy skin. Spring is a time for renewal in nature and in your skin. As you look for ways to improve your skin quality during these early months, remember that less is more. to update your spring makeup. Start with the right foundation. After the harshness of the winter months, it is important to use a moisturizing foundation or just a bronzing moisturizer for spring. This will help to rehydrate your skin, leaving it supple and beautiful. Try lighter colors and more springtime flare when selecting eye shadows and blushes. You want to use color since it helps to give that all inspiring natural springtime look, but try pastels rather than harsher tones. This will open up your look.

Update your lipstick too! Always use SPF but you may need to using a conditioning lipstick rather than a traditional product. If you are using foundation, be sure it is a lighter color. No one is tan just yet; that is around the corner. Do not overdo it on the tinting in your foundation. The spring months are all about living beautifully and naturally. Originally locally based Michael Cummins has returned to his profession as a landscape photographer in the Peak District of the UK but has left some of his canvases and photographs of local landscapes on display at La Galeria. Joan Saxby a mature UK artist is exhibiting art featuring flowers, river scenes and horses all very colourful. With many Rustic or modern homes having a neutral background the introduction of a splash of colour in a picture or photograph will add vibrancy and significance and provide a cheap and easily varied alternative to repainting.

MÁLAGA’S BEAUTIFUL GARDENS Exploring Malaga

T

he local people of Málaga (the Malagueños) are justifiably proud of their city, but even they will admit that at times, like any city, it can generate a desperate need to escape buildings and encounter nature. True, the proximity of the sea and the city’s many beautiful walks along it are a huge benefit, but what’s less widely known is that Málaga is wellendowed with some beautiful gardens El Parque This is sometimes confused with the adjacent world-famous "Paseo del Parque" which hugs the sea, but this park was created towards the late 19th century and was based upon land reclaimed from the sea. The flora and fauna here are a nature-lover’s delight and you’ll

38 The Grapevine

see some very exotic specimens. Many of these were imported from faraway lands during the Spanish colonial period, and also later, when Málaga was an extremely important global trading hub. The Jardin de la Catedral A great tradition in Spain, going well back into the mediaeval period, was that cathedrals would have their own gardens, usually just off the cloisters. Málaga is no exception to that, and today these gardens are hugely popular with visitors and locals alike. True, they may not have the size and variety of the “Parque”, but they make up for that in their picturesque surroundings and backdrop. A camera here is an absolute must! El Jardín del Retiro Not many gardens in the world

are classified as a historical monument, but this is one! It’s located in ‘Churriana’, which is a very short distance outside of Málaga city centre. Based upon what was originally (some 350 years ago) a planned estate, these gardens cover no less than 140,000 m²! Not only are they magnificent, but they’re also home to a large variety of animals and fish – over 6,000 in all! Don’t miss ‘El Olmo’, which is a 200-year-old elm tree. Finca de la Concepcion Again just slightly outside of Málaga is this superb garden. It was constructed around a mansion and it comprises not only pools and incredibly beautiful flowers and shrubs, but also a waterfall and some breath-taking views over the city. Look out for the terrapins in the pools! Lisa Jeeves

activity, however light, is better for your health than none at all. What counts as vigorousintensity aerobic activity? Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity means you're breathing hard and fast, and your heart rate has gone up quite a bit. If you're working at this level, you won't be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath, and you should stop if you feel unwell.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES FOR OLDER ADULTS How Much Physical Activity Do Older Adults Need?

T

he amount of physical activity you need to do each week depends on your age and level of health. To stay healthy or to improve health, older adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and musclestrengthening activity. Older adults aged 65 or older, who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active daily. It's recommended that adults aged 65 or older do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days. Some activity, however light, is better for your health than none at all - you should aim to do something, no matter what your age, weight, health problems or abilities. You should aim to active every day in as many ways as possible, doing a range of physical activities that incorporate fitness, strength, balance and flexibility.

What counts as moderateintensity aerobic activity? Moderate-intensity aerobic activity means you're working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but you can't sing the words to a song. Examples of activities that require moderate effort for most people include: Walking fast Water aerobics Ballroom and line dancing Riding a bike on level ground or with a few hills Playing doubles tennis Daily activities such as shopping, cooking or housework don't count towards your daily 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity. This is because the effort required isn't hard enough to increase your heart rate. However, it's important to minimise the amount of time you spend sitting watching TV, reading or listening to music. Some

What counts as musclestrengthening activity? Muscle-strengthening exercises are counted in repetitions and sets. A repetition is one complete movement of an activity, like lifting a weight or doing a sit-up. A set is a group of repetitions. For each activity, try to do 8 to 12 repetitions in each set. Try to do at least one set of each musclestrengthening activity. You'll get even more benefits if you do two or three sets. To gain health benefits from muscle-strengthening activities, you should do them to the point where you find it hard to complete another repetition. There are many ways you can strengthen your muscles, whether at home or in the gym. Examples of muscle-strengthening activities include: Carrying or moving heavy loads such as groceries Activities that involve stepping and jumping such as dancing heavy gardening, such as digging or shovelling Exercises that use your body weight for resistance, such as push-ups or sit-ups Yoga Lifting weights. Make a time to do specific strength exercises two or three times a week, and build some of them into your everyday activities.

LIGHTHOUSE A Beacon of Hope for Abandoned Dogs

L

IGHTHOUSE is a start-up organization run by local people for distressed dogs in Competa. It specifically aims to offer a First Response to abandoned dogs, and to enable anyone who comes into contact with a stray dog to do something to help it, ie to get the dog off the streets and into sanctuary. Since moving to Competa a few months ago and taking in 'Curley' and her puppies, I have had numerous conversations with people who love dogs and who are appalled by the suffering and distress witnessed in stray dogs in the vicinity. This tells me that there is enormous compassion and love felt for these dogs, but currently these sentiments are not being channeled into action. Thus dogs are often left on the streets, creating mess and ill-feeling, and sinking further and further into a hopeless state of starvation. With the help of dog lovers in Competa, this situation could change. Many people pass by a distressed dog simply because they do not know what to do about it. They may not be able to take it home and there is nowhere else to take it. LIGHTHOUSE seeks to offer an immediate response to these dogs in crisis. We hope to offer sanctuary at three levels: firstly in an initial 48 hour foster home, secondly in a 6 – 8 week foster home and finally in finding a forever home. So how can we do this when the need is so great and already so many caring people are overwhelmed?

54 The Grapevine

At this point I need to acknowledge the work that is already being done in Competa, by individuals and charitable organisations, involving foster homes and sterilization programs. All this work is commendable and very helpful in tackling the problem, but there is a huge gap in the area of immediate response, which is where LIGHTHOUSE seeks to operate. LIGHTHOUSE is asking people who love dogs to gift that love to LIGHTHOUSE for a certain period of time. Could you offer to take a dog for just 48 hours? LIGHTHOUSE would guarantee not to leave the dog with you for more than the period of time that you have promised your love. We hope to compile a donor list of 48 hour fosterers which could be called upon when a dog is identified in need. Donors would indicate how often they could do this work, starting from as little as just once a year. Forty eight hours would enable LIGHTHOUSE team members to find a 6 – 8 weeks foster home. Presently these are few and far between in Competa, thus many working at the coal face are overwhelmed and at risk of burning out. But it doesn't need to be like this. If you love dogs, could you gift just 48 hours and help a dog? I have also spoken to several people who live in Competa, either full or part time, who are real animal lovers but do not have a dog of their own because they want to retain their independence and freedom to travel. However, fostering a dog could fit around those plans and

also bring a real sense of fulfillment. Could you gift 6 – 8 weeks of your love just once a year? If enough people came forward this would enable us to take in dogs with confidence, knowing that there is always a safe house available. Additionally, and most importantly, it would spread the load, and take pressure off those who are constantly struggling at the coal face. Again, LIGHTHOUSE would guarantee not to leave a dog with you for more time than you have promised your love. You could choose to do a 6 – 8 week foster just once a year or at a certain time of the year, or more than once a year, knowing that you would not be left with a dog that might interfere with any plans you have. Finally, all these dogs will need forever homes. They all deserve to feel secure, to be loved and part of a family of their own. A 6 – 8 week foster gives LIGHTHOUSE team members the time to find the right home for the right dog. Some dogs have been wandering the streets for years and are in very poor physical health. Their need is great, and emotionally they will be scared, frightened, abandoned, desperate. The gift of your love could help them and change their lives forever. However, none of this can happen unless people come forward to offer their help. Without the foster carers, the program cannot start. Please think about it. A little of your love can mean a new life for a dog. For more information or to offer your help, please contact either Mandy Peachey or Lyndsey Phillips. Lyndsey Phillips. If you are in your 20s, binging on wine can result in osteoporosis down the road. Moreover, drinking too much of wine can cause a negative impact on your brain. As a matter of fact, it can cause a lot of health problems, such as liver diseases, impaired libido, nerve damage, muscle damage and menstrual problems.

IS WINE GOOD FOR YOU? It must be !

Y

ou should not binge on wine. In other words, if you take one or two units of wine on a daily basis, it may give some benefits for your cardiac health. Some people say that red wine is more beneficial than other types of wines. However, this is a controversial topic. Let's look at some facts and find out if wine is good for you. Facts and fallacies Whether you are a man or woman, we suggest that you drink 14 units per week, not more than that. It's a good idea to spread the drinks over a period of 3 days. So, before you get rid of your wine collection, know that wine, especially the red wine, offers some antioxidants like resveratrol and quercetin. These antioxidants help you prevent certain diseases. The benefits of Red Wine

According to scientists, red wines feature lots of antioxidants and polyphenols. Generally, the darker the liquid, the higher the number of antioxidants. According to a test, the cabernet sauvignon grapes found to have lots of polyphenols. A professor suggested that the other varieties of red grape had lots of antioxidants, such as petit syrah, syrah, zinfandel and merlot, just to name a few. Aside from this, research studies discovered that white wine also offers some health benefits. Binge drinking Alcohol Concerns states that 9 million residents of England consume too much wine. INFORMATION AND ADVICE RELATING TO THE DOCUMENTATION FOR YOUR PROPERTY By Sunset Properties

A

t Sunset Properties Spain we have a wealth of knowledge and experience relating to property documentation. It's essential, particularly if you want to sell your property, that any issues relating to your Escritura, Catastro, IBI and utility bills are resolved as soon as possible.

certificate from your Town Hall as part of the process to 'legalise' all country properties thereby ensuring that records kept by Town Halls match what's actually physically on the ground. Anything you've added (including pergolas) must have been in situ for more than 6 years for the certificate to be issued.

The Escritura (Title Deed) states who owns the property and gives a description of the property. If you've added anything new such as a pool, bedroom or garage your Escritura must be updated to include these.

The Catastro is a comprehensive register of all land and real estate in Spain and the information held is frequently inaccurate. The Catastro can easily be amended by having a topographic survey of your land undertaken by a surveyor. Your AsesorĂa or lawyer then needs to arrange for the Catastro office to make the relevant changes.

This is a straightforward process if you have the necessary building licences for the work. If you don't and the pool, room or building has been in situ for more than 6 years then it's possible to update your Escritura using a certificate of antiquity which requires the services of an architect and an AsesorĂa or lawyer. Additionally for rural properties you'll also have to obtain a DAFO

62 The Grapevine

IBI (Council Tax) The IBI bill must be in your name (and not that of the previous owner). Even if you've been paying the IBI directly from your bank account it doesn't matter, the bill itself must be in your name so that it can then be changed to that of the new owner.

Electricity Similarly, the electricity bill also needs to be in your name to ensure an uncomplicated transfer of the contract to the new owners. Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) All home owners who have a house for sale must obtain an EPC for their property. against toothbrush abrasion." 3.) Cold weather increases your chance of catching a cold. It seems to make sense, but it's not true. There is no proof colder temperatures increase your chances of catching a cold, according to LiveScience.com. Instead, research shows the spike in colds during the winter months is actually due to people spending more time indoors, around one another, making it easier for the cold to spread from one person to the next. 4.) Reading in poor lighting is bad for your eyes. While it certainly makes it more difficult to focus on what you're reading, there is no evidence that reading under such conditions will cause any permanent structural or long-term damage to your eyes according to WebMD.

5 HEALTH 'FACTS' THAT ARE ACTUALLY MYTHS There are some that don't hold up to further examination.

G

et eight hours of sleep at night, eat your vegetables, and an apple a day keeps the doctor away - these are all common health sayings you've heard and probably believe to be true. While commonly told health myths may have some truth to them, there are some that don't hold up to further examination. 1.) Starve a cold and feed a fever. This one has been told for years, though most people can't remember which one you starve and which you feed. However, according to WebMD, the best advice is to starve neither. You'll recover from the flu or a cold more quickly with a healthy, balanced diet, so eat sensibly and you'll be yourself again in no time.

2.) Small and soft toothbrushes make for an ineffective clean. This one isn't true. The American Dental Association actually recommends using a small brush head with soft bristles. Using a brush like Oral-B's new Compact Clean provides a small brush head that can get to those hardto-reach places and provide a precise clean. Because of its unique ultra-dense feathered bristles which offer multiple cleaning tips per filament, Compact Clean will also gently remove plaque in a comfortable, effective way. "As a hygienist, one of the biggest obstacles my patients face is finding the balance between using a brush that is soft enough and achieving an effective clean," says Andrew Johnston, RDH. "Compact Clean's design allows you to remove plaque while keeping your teeth and gums safe

5.) An aerobic workout will significantly boost your metabolism all day long. Nope, but you will enjoy a nice boost while you're actually doing the workout along with a small boost throughout the day, though only about 20 extra calories according to WebMD. If you want improved all day benefits, strength training is actually the better way to go because it conditions your body to burn calories more efficiently. So the next time you're tempted to starve your cold, or only read a book with lights blazing, remember that these five commonly held health myths are now debunked! To learn more about how Compact Clean can lead to powerful results, visit www.oralb.com.

A man walks into doctor's office."What seems to be the problem?" asks the doc. "It's... um... well... I have five penises," replies the man. "Blimey!" says the doctor, "How do your trousers fit?" "Like a glove." A man flying in a hot air balloon realises he is lost. He reduces his altitude, spots a man in a field down below and shouts, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?" The man replies, "Yes, you're in a hot air balloon, about 30 feet above this field." "You must be an engineer," says the balloonist. "I am. How did you know?" says the man. "Everything you told me is technically correct, but it's of no use to anyone." The man below says, "You must be in management." "I am. But how did you know?" says the balloonist. "You don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help.

You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault." Seventy-year-old George went for his annual check-up. He told the doctor that he felt fine, but often had to go to the bathroom during the night. Then he said: "But you know Doc, I'm blessed. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I'm done!" A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George's wife and said: "Your husband's test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night."

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they laid down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies, and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?" Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "It tells me that someone has stolen our tent." -

Thelma exclaimed: "That old fool! He's been peeing in the refrigerator again!"

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Snowballs in May

I

f you love hydrangeas but find them difficult to grow here with their demands for shade and plenty of water, then you're going to love the tropical hydrangea or årbol de las hortensias in Spanish! Dombeya x cayeuxii is also known as the pink snowball bush and it is just as delightful as it sounds. Botanically it is not related to hydrangeas and its cultural requirements are very different –

84 The Grapevine

full sun or lightly dappled shade, becoming drought resistant with age, not fussy where it plants its feet and it can reach a huge 7m high, though is more often seen at around 5m. Thus it can be grown as a very large specimen shrub or small tree but give it some space and sight it where you can easily admire its immense beauty. If you can hang a hammock under it and gaze up into the dangling pink snowballs, all the better!

Dombeya x cayeuxii indicates that this delight is a hybrid, a cross between dombeya wallichii and dombeya burgessiae. D. wallichii is native to East Africa and Madagascar. It flowers there in autumn and winter. D. burgessiae (also known as seminole) is more commonly seen in West and Southern Africa and it's flowers are clustered on the branches, looking upwards, very prettily but without the appeal of the dangling

snowballs of d. wallichii and d. x cayeuxii. These two are often confused because there is not much difference between them, the main variation being in the large, toothed, velvety leaves; 3-lobed in d. x cayeuxii and more heart-shaped in d. wallichii. The showy clusters of dangling flowers, 10 to 15cm across, look like pom-poms of tiny rosebuds and are exquisitely sweetly-scented. It's the scent that you will first notice and then the beauty of the plant. In sheltered coastal areas it will flower during autumn and winter; here in the hills, flowering will probably start around April, but it is variable. When the flowers fade, they don´t fall off but slowly fade and dry to a parchment-like colour – rather as hydrangeas do – so the season of interest is long and the large leaves are good-looking in their own right. Remember that it is a semi-tropical so it does not like temperatures much below zero. Strictly an evergreen, in cold conditions the leaves turn bronze and can fall. It may need some protection in cold years. After flowering, you should lightly prune and shape, given that its width can almost match its height. When happy, its growth rate can be quick, so you won't need to wait long for a spectacular effect. In summer keep an eye out for aphids and red spider mite; otherwise this is a really lowmaintenance plant which will produce hundreds of flowers covering the entire plant. These are much loved by butterflies and bees who love their rich nectar.

This lovely thing deserves a special position in your garden – it's a plant not very often seen but always admired. Although it makes a lot of top growth, the root systems are not particularly large or aggressive so it is often planted near buildings, in courtyards etc. It is also possible to grow it in a large pot pruning annually to keep it within scale. It can be propagated from softwood cuttings which take easily and rapidly. The genus dombeya is named after Joseph Dombey, an 18th century botanist, explorer and doctor. The species name is for Henri Cayeaux a little-known plant breeder of the early 20th century. He created over 200 varieties of plants, working particularly with hydrangeas. There are some large examples of this lovely plant in El Jardín de la Concepcion, Málaga though, sadly, the biggest example, well over 100 years old, was toppled by the wind on the eve of King's Day last year. A victim of constant staff cuts there and subsequent lack of maintenance. An interesting fact is that in 1992 there was a permanent staff there of 16 gardeners with occasional help from 20 students at the attached garden school and they maintained

LUX MUNDI TORRE DEL MAR OPEN DAY Do you know who we are? Do you know where to find us? Do you know what we do? Do you know how we can help you? If the answer is NO to any of these questions then come along to our Open Day on Friday 19th May, 11am – 5pm and we will provide the answers. On the day there will be volunteers representing each of the groups, activities, churches and services that we offer. A chance for an informal chat to find something that may interest you. Also you can learn about the history of Lux Mundi and its founder, the development of the centre here in Torre del Mar. Find out about the charitable work we do and even how you could get involved. Come along and have a coffee in our lovely garden, make some new friends, catch up with old friends, and enjoy the warm welcome Lux Mundi has to offer.

COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if

you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take shortterm care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German.

And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. HIGH RISE BUILDING IN MALAGA In Málaga, opposition to a proposed high rise building that may include a casino is being heard. Opponents say the approximately 443-foot-tall building would transform the city’s image drastically and would overshadow other important buildings. The project, which was endorsed by the city council, is now being criticized for its “unsustainability and visual and environmental impact,” according to G3 Newswire. Qatar-based Al Bidda Group was given permission to build Suites Málaga Port, the name given to the skyscraper hotel last year, on the jetty that outlines the eastern side of what is one of the oldest continuously operated ports in the Mediterranean. The initial endorsement by the city council was for the skyscraper hotel only, but a casino could also reportedly be part of the overall proposal. Suites Málaga Port will reportedly have 352 rooms, parking for 485 vehicles, and feature a casino, spa, luxury shopping center, conference center, and swimming pools. If the project goes to plan, the new hotel will create an estimated 1,300 construction jobs, with 350 additional jobs when it opens in 2020.
