God our heavenly Father, as we grieve for the miseries of this world, and especially as we weep with those who weep in childlessness, we thank you that by the birth of John the Baptist you gave us a herald of hope: that in the new heavens and new earth all who belong to Christ will rejoice in the overwhelming goodness that will fulfil and exceed all our godly longings.
