Deer Creek Days 2011 Parade Marshal

The Glenrock Flower Club The summer time weather in Glenrock is bringing out all the activities that come with the sunshine and warm days. One of these enjoyed and anticipated events is the Deer Creek Days Parade. This year, the Glenrock Flower Club has been selected to be the Parade Marshals for the 2011 Deer Creek Days Parade. For nearly 30 years, the women of Glenrock have taken it upon themselves to show their pride in their town by keeping it beautiful. Though the group started out as a national sorority group, Beta Sigma Phi, they have since dubbed themselves the Glenrock Flower Club, formed in the spring of 2008. “We disbanded from the national part of it because we were raising the dues and decided that it was just too much of a hassle and we weren’t seeing any return from that,” said Back Row: Marty Lantis, Margie TumCrissie Wobig, who has been unofficially selected as president and treasurer of the club. mond, Connie Parsons, Melba Creager, Crissie was the president of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, so it only made sense for her title Carolyn Johnson. Middle Row: Jean to carry over. Hewett, Glendene Stillwell, Crissie Wobig, Several new faces have been seen since the change in name, as well as those who are still Shirley Davis. Front Row: Mary Slater, Kathryn Simpson, Rosalie Goff. involved. Rosalie Goff, Carolyn Johnson, Marty Lantis, Crissie Wobig, Glenden Stillwell, Jean Hewett, Margie Tummond and Connie Parsons are still beautifying Glenrock just as they did in Beta Sigma Phi. Some new helpers and community volunteers also do their part in keeping Glenrock looking pretty for everyone. Linda Epperly, Anna Huffman, JoAnne Shubert, Linda Peppersack, Twink Wickett, JoAnne Howe, Kathy Pope, Terri Arnold and Margaret Nunn have made their mark in helping the club, as well as all the husbands who have donated their time to helping out. The group started out when they purchased about a dozen whiskey barrels and placed them around town, from there the barrels served as their flower pots. The club also does different decorating and beautification for each season, starting with a Christmas greenery and snowmen. Decorations for Valentines, Easter and May baskets have been part of their yearly routines as well as scarecrows for Halloween. “One year we had candy cane Christmas up and down the streets and did that with the Christmas greenery,” Carolyn Johnson said. “That was when our town had the wonderful midway that they took out.” The club used to take the responsibility of up keeping the flower garden in City Park, and they now have several flower pots at the historical museum. Funding for their ambitious projects is something else the club shows responsibility for. Most of their funds come from their own pockets, paid in yearly dues, as well as a Christmas auction held amongst themselves. The club does raise some money with sales from the Christmas greenery, and some money is given to them by the Converse County Soil Conservation District. Overall, the members of the Glenrock Flower Club have done everything themselves. Despite having to fill and carry watering jugs and water flowers by hand, you can still see them out watering the flowers religiously. Their zeal has had it’s impacts, as now the town is seeing other people follow in the trend started by the flower club. “Other merchants are putting in flowers and keeping their side of the street, it’s kind of caught on,” Johnson said. “We do appreciate those people on the other side of the street, as well as all the husbands and others who help out. We started up before anyone else did. Now you have the downtown beautification groups but we’ve been doing this for years.” Everyone who calls Glenrock home can take pride in these people, as well as their town, and perhaps follow their example.

Deer Creek Days Classic Car Show Dedicated in the Memory of Cindy Roquette

Classic Car Show Sunday, August 7, 2011

This year’s car show is dedicated in memory of our dear friend, Cindy Roquette. Cindy along with her husband Barry has been the DCD Car Show chairpersons for the last few years.

10 a.m. Town Park Registration at 8 a.m.

Cindy loved being outside and working in the family yard. Cindy is a very giving person with the willingness to help others and to know when someone was in need. She never thought twice about how to help, she was the one who made things happen without anyone knowing. Cindy was the person that walked into my life and quickly became my friend. She was the one person that wasn’t afraid to say “Mary Kay, what are/where you thinking”. We had some good arguments and she still supported me. She taught me to cross every “t” twice, dot every “I” twice, and then go back and check it again. I will forever miss Cindy and know that I am blessed with a special angel watching over me. Mary Kay

Street Dance Come and dance the night away on Saturday, August 6, at the Deer Creek Days annual Street Dance! Join us at the Town Hall Parking Lot following the “You Think You Can Dance” Contest.
