MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
It has been an honor as well to see this community not only through myriad lenses, but through a series of phases. As a parent and trustee, I experienced life at Gateway prior to the worldwide pandemic. As a new Head, I saw this community navigate a new world with the innovation, creativity, and resourcefulness that allowed ourchildren to continue to flourish and grow, even in the most challenging of moments. And as an educator, I saw how we never missed a beat.
Our mission remains ever true: to transform the lives of bright students with language-based learning differences and attention deficits so that they become confident self-advocates, cognizant of their strengths, and well on the road to becoming independent learners.
privilege of seeing Gateway through three lenses: as an educator who has worked in this city for almost 40 years, as Head of School, and as a parent.
As I look through these lenses, I see Gateway’s full story. I see the students who have thrived as they learn what they are capable of; I see the faculty, staff, and administrators who work tirelessly day in and day out so that our children may benefit from all that Gateway gives them; and always, I see our vision and our mission at work.
We know who we are as a community and as a school, and we know what we do well. As we move forward toward our 60th anniversary, now, more than ever, we will be the gateway to a joyful, more successful future for so many students. We cannot do that without you. I wish to express my ongoing appreciation and gratitude to the entire Gateway community for your crucial support this year. Thank you for rising to this most important challenge.
Laurie Gruhn Head of School"WE WILL BE THE GATEWAY TO A JOYFUL, MORE SUCCESSFUL FUTURE FOR SO MANY STUDENTS."
THE GATEWAY SCHOOL MISSION
We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in our community, while recognizing this is an ever-evolving topic. Ultimately, we strive to build a safe, respectful, responsive culture, as well as a community that is grounded in connection and understanding, with an appreciation of and the opportunity to learn from our differences
The Gateway School is a K-8, independent day school that transforms the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits. At Gateway, our students become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. Relying on direct, multisensory instruction and guided by an integrated curriculum, expert faculty teach students the language, literacy, and critical thinking skills that are the foundations for success in mainstream educational settings and beyond. Gateway believes a close relationship between the school and parents provides essential support as students grow and seek to realize their potential. In small classes and as members of a diverse and inclusive community, Gateway students experience academic and social success, recognize their strengths, and are empowered to become independent learners
GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
AsaparentofLiam,grade6,mysonandour family have benefited greatly by the “Gateway Difference.” The program and our teachers have changed the trajectory of his life and built him up to be a happy and confidentlearner, leaderandathlete.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to present The Gateway School’s AnnualReportofGivingfor202122.I am beyond grateful to our entirecommunityforcontributing yourtime, talentsandtreasureto ensuretheongoingsuccessofour belovedschool.
A key role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure the continuanceofGateway’smission, vision and financial oversight. With the development, delivery and publishing of the new Strategic Plan this past fall, we furthered those goals. The plan, accessible here, set out key initiatives for our school’s future that include growing our lower division, supporting and advancing the professional development for our teachers, delivering additional leadership opportunities and capstones for our students and expanding our existing space. These initiatives are a part of solidifying the “GatewayDifference.”
Your involvement within our community and generous support of fundraising efforts are key to the on-going success of our mission and furthering the “Gateway Difference.” As we end the year, the Board of Trustees has achieved100%participationinannualgiving. We too hope that you will join us and participate in giving for this school year as youhavedoneinthepast.
