Coalition Fights for Illinois Concealed Carry Gun Law
Senate Say Yes to Drivers Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants in Illinois By Lucia Anaya

A measure that would give undocumented immigrants the ability to apply for drivers licenses passed in the Illinois Senate on Tuesday, Dec. 4. With a 41 to 14 vote, the Senate cleared a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for a special drivers license which supporters say will help make Illinois roadways safer. The bill will now move to the State House, which is likely to vote on it in early January. In a press conference on Nov. 20, Senate President John Cullerton, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Gov. Pat Quinn, and other public officials backed the bill, stating it was a consumer and safety measure. “[This legislation] is one of the best
ways to make our highways safer, to save money and to save lives for the people in our state,” said Quinn in the news conference. The legislation will allow undocumented immigrants to apply for three-year licenses. Undocumented motorists will also have to meet the same driving and testing requirements as citizens applying for a standard license. Since the start of the veto session, Highway Safety Coalition members rallied in Springfield, where they lobbied in favor of the bill. Cullerton has said the legislation will help the 250,000 undocumented Illinois drivers obtain a drivers license and buy insurance, improving the safety of the state’s roads and highways.
A coalition is fighting for Illinois to remain the only state without a concealed carry law. The Stop Concealed Carry Coalition, made up of legislators, religious leaders and activists, wants to prevent the passage of any law that could allow people to carry weapons in Illinois. “Illinois stands alone as the only state that does not allow people to carry concealed weapons and we are proud to stand as an example,” said Lee Goodman, organizer of the Stop Concealed Carry Coalition, during a press conference on Nov. 26. Members of the coalition, including Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, 22nd Ward Ald. Ricardo Muñoz and Rev. Michael L. Pfleger, said a concealed carry law in Illinois would increase the amount of weapons on the streets, leading to more violence. “No one can tell me…who sees the amount of cost of the violence we have in this community with hospitals, our medical examiner’s office and our court system, that putting more guns on the street and putting them in concealed compartments is what we need,” said Suffredin. But Valinda Rowe, spokesperson for Illinois-
Carry.com, a website that advocates for a concealed carry law, says the right to bear arms is not only a constitutional right, but is essential in keeping the people of Illinois safe. “The people who are perpetuating the crimes are already carrying guns. They don’t care about the laws, about not having a gun outside your home. All they are looking at is that everyone else is an unarmed, defenseless victim that’s just out there, easy prey,” she said. Rowe isn’t the only proponent of a concealed carry law. Ten Illinois counties overwhelmingly supported concealed carry referendums in the Nov. 6 election, according to the Chicago Tribune. Yet the coalition said a majority of people in Illinois stand against the measure. They presented a petition created on Nov. 19 signed by 6,700 opponents. “I can’t fathom the idea of going to the mall and just thinking that under that coat over there or in that purse there might be a weapon,” said Ald. Muñoz. “We cannot allow concealed carry to become the law of the land.”

La propuesta ahora va rumbo a la Cámara de Illinois, la cual probablemente la pondrá a voto a principios de enero. En una conferencia de prensa del 20 de noviembre, el Presidente del Senado John Cullerton, el Alcalde Rahm Emanuel, el Gobernador Pat Quinn, entre otros funcionarios electos, respaldaron la propuesta, declarando que era una medida del consumidor y de seguridad. “[Esta legislación] es una de las mejores maneras de hacer nuestras carreteras

Community Demands Release of Undocumented Workers By Nyki Salinas-Duda
Advocates and church leaders had been protesting outside the Chicago Loop headquarters of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security since Friday, Nov. 30. The protests came after the arrest of 34 undocumented workers on Thursday, Nov. 29. Protest organizers said the men who were taken from the Chicago Pallet Factory in Elk Grove Village had no criminal records and should be released under the current Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policy. The rule allows the agency to stop the prosecution of undocumented people with no criminal backgrounds. “This whole ICE organization is meant to concentrate on people with criminal backgrounds, and the people who are affecting this country in a negative way—the drug dealers, the gangbangers, the murderers, the rapists, but I think the numbers show that [the majority] of them are working fathers, working mothers, hardworking, contributing people to this country,” said Miguel Valdez, a youth organizer with Centro Sin Fronteras. All but two of the men were released on a $2,000 bond on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The two remaining detainees are being held on criminal charges related to the raid. But according to Magali Renteria, a Little Village
resident who was among those allowed to enter ICE offices, all of the detainees were eligible for I-bonds, which allow people without a criminal history to be released without a fine. At the rally advocates again questioned President Barack Obama’s stand on legalization and the protection of immigrants. “The DREAM Act was introduced a while ago and I really feel like that was just to throw a stick in the line of ants. It kind of made the young people forget about the older generation,” Valdez said. Many supporters mimicked Valdez’s calls for broader reform, saying the upswing in deportations under President Obama is a move to deport “the parents of the DREAMers” and divide the movement. In response, activists demanded far-reaching change, including an immediate moratorium on deportations, a reevaluation of ICE operations and comprehensive immigration reform. “It was a joint effort in getting our congregations put together, mobilizing all our volunteers, mobilizing our soldiers,” says Giovany Gomez, also of Centro Sin Fronteras. A Step Closer to Home Ownership with TRP
The Resurrection Project offers a path to home ownership, new rehab rentals By Adriana Cardona-Maguigad The collapse of the housing market transformed communities like Back of the Yards into neighborhoods of foreclosed and empty homes. But even before the collapse, many Back of the Yards residents were vulnerable to predatory lending and abusive landlords. Today, a program aimed to offer residents reliable housing opportunities is set to work with families who are ready to buy or rent rehabbed properties in Back of the Yards. That’s after The Resurrection Project (TRP) bought and fixed some foreclosed properties through its Neighborhood Stabilization Program, TRP‘s NSP2— an initiative designed to revitalize properties in hard-hit neighborhoods due to the foreclosure crisis that spread across the nation over four years ago. Under the NSP2 program, TRP received $13.5 million to allocate a portion specifically to invest in Back of the Yards. TRP’s plan to offer affordable housing in targeted communities has two components — sustainable homeownership and reliable renting. Renting for a better quality of living Under the program, TRP purchased 15 properties with a total of 49 units to rehab and rent. Of those, TRP currently has approximately 29 units ready for rent. Josue Canchola is the rental coordinator for NSP2. He works with local residents and walks them through the
application process. He said that since he started working with families in the neighborhood, he realized there is a great need for affordable and decent homes for rent. “For what I have seen over the last two months, I noticed that some of these rental units are pretty bad,” he said. “I learned also that there [are] absentee landlords, landlords that do not take care of their properties, don’t do maintenance, don’t invest in their properties.” Canchola heard of cases where landlords hooked up a water boiler to three or four apartments, leaving tenants without hot water in the morning. “They use one power electricity box to power the entire building, which is illegal,” he added. Instead, Canchola said, the new TRP apartments are newly rehabbed, “some of them were rebuilt from the base.” Who qualifies? “Anyone can apply,” said Canchola, even people without a social security number. The main catch is to have a source of income, a decent credit history and no criminal background. “They need to complete a pre-application and provide proof of income for the last three months,” said Canchola. The program accepts subsidized voucher holders and other forms of housing assistance provided by government or not-for-profit organizations. Canchola said people can apply now while the apartments are being rehabbed. When the units are ready, they may be considered for that apartment. The estimated time of the application process is two weeks once potential tenants are preapproved. A Black Friday for Real Estate The time to buy a home is now. “The process was easy, because little by little, I was told how to do it.” Zavala and her family have lived in Back of the Yards for 14 years, so staying in the neighborhood was important. “I always wanted to buy inside this area, whenever I looked in other places, I felt strange,” she added. They bought one building with two units located on 49th Street and Marshfield Avenue. Each unit has three bedro-

TRP has also acquired 15 properties to rehab and sell throughout Back of the Yards starting from Pershing Road to 51st Street, and from Racine to Damen Avenues. Daniel Bahena, managing broker for TRP and TRP Realty said the organization purchased properties that are foreclosed by the banks. “From there we rebuilt the house. New electrical, new plumbing, insulation, walls, windows, light fixtures, roofing, we separate utilities so each tenant will have its own electrical and heating.” Bahena said the renovations included the removal of hazards, lead and mold. According to him, the investment involved is about $250,000 per home. But the homes are sold for $130,000 or according to the appraisal value at the time of purchase. So far, the program has closed on four transactions, three in Back of the Yards and one in McKinley Park, said Bahena. Two were condos and two

were multi-unit apartment buildings. “So it will be owner-occupying one apartment and they will be able to rent the other units,” he said. “Our payments are pretty affordable, most people are paying $1,000.” The organization also provides down payment assistance--anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000. “And sometimes more if we are able to get assistance from some of the partnering banks.” TRP also provides financial education. Once they complete those programs, Bahena explained, future homeowners are able to get deals on loans. “They don’t have to pay any private mortgage insurance and that saves them from $75 to $150 a month,” said Bahena. “We want clients to have reserves—we give a one year warranty on all the work that was done on the home.” Kristen Komara is the director of financial services at TRP. She said the message for everyone in the community is that “now is the time to buy a house.” The interest rates, she said, are at the lowest they have been in many years, and the prices are affordable. “If you are willing to put in the work, now is the time to begin [the home buying] process,” said Komara. Qualifying for mortgage Applicants must have two years on the job and two-months’ reserves. That amounts to 3 to 5 thousand dollars depending on the purchase price of the property. Bahena said clients should also have at least 1 percent invested in the deal. “So, if the house is $130,000, we want you to at least have $1,300 down …the rest, we can figure out through our down payment assistance program.” In addition, applicants must turn in 60 days of pay stubs, 60 days of banking statements and a picture ID. The program is open to everyone, as long as they meet the income guidelines and other eligibility requirements. Even though the home buying process can be challenging, Bahena said he has worked with clients for almost two years, “they came in with collections, no money, low credit scores…they came out with $20,000 saved and a brand new home,” he added. A Un Paso Más Cerca de Ser Dueño de Casa con TRP El Proyecto Resurrección ofrece un camino a la propiedad de vivienda, unidades de alquiler recién remodeladas Por Adriana Cardona-Maguigad El colapso del mercado de la vivienda transformó a comunidades como Back of the Yards en vecindarios de viviendas embargadas y vacantes. Pero inclusive antes del colapso, muchos residentes de Back of the Yards eran vulnerables a los prestamistas y dueños abusivos. A research report released this summer has shed light on how a slow teacher hiring climate may be affecting the graduates of the Grow Your Own Teachers program.
Of the two Grow Your Own Teachers candidates Catalyst Chicago profiled earlier this year, just one is headed to the classroom. A research report released this summer has shed light on how a slow teacher hiring climate may be affecting the program’s graduates. Michael Vargas, one of the teachers featured by Catalyst, landed a job teaching 8th-grade bilingual education at Calmeca Academy. Angel Torres was offered a full-tuition scholarship to complete a master’s degree in math education at Northeastern Illinois University. He took it, and will spend another year learning instead of teaching. Torres had several reasons for opting to take the scholarship. One is the chance to build confidence. “I knew I wasn’t prepared to go out and teach at this time. I wanted to stay in school and take a couple more classes,” he says. Second, the math endorsement Torres will earn makes him more marketable, adding to endorsements he has already earned in social studies, history and English. He’s not alone. Of the 22 Grow Your Own graduates in the evaluation released this summer, 36 percent are currently enrolled in graduate programs and another 45 percent say they plan to participate. With a tough job market in CPS, one principal advised Grow Your Own that it should “let (candidates) know Chicago is challenging, and they should have endorsements before going out to get a job.” Student enrollment in Illinois is expected to decline through 2015, according to a 2011 report from the Illinois State Board of Education, and fewer students will mean tougher job searches for teachers. The trend is likely to hold for teachers elsewhere, too: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, the number of students is stagnant in many other Midwestern states and declining in the Northeast, as well. Reached over the summer, Torres said he also feared that if he took a job, he would lose pay should teachers strike—which they did. “My wife just lost her job at the state, so I needed to make sure there was an income,” Torres said at the time. As a master’s student at Northeastern Il-
linois University, he was able to keep his full-time job at People’s Gas. Constrained by funding Grow Your Own is intended to help increase diversity in the teaching force by training candidates who already have ties to underserved communities, helping them to complete their bachelor’s degrees and become teachers. In CPS, the workforce has recently experienced a decline in the number of African-American teachers, coupled with a substantial gap between the percentage of students and the percentage of teachers who are Latino. The district agreed to a provision in the most recent Chicago Teachers Union contract that will create a plan for recruiting more minority teachers. CTU staff coordinator Jackson Potter says he thinks the district should look at models like Grow Your Own. But an evaluation of the program released this summer noted that despite positive ratings of graduates on a modified Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching, and good reviews from principals, not all the 33 Chicago graduates have found jobs. Of the 33, most are teaching in CPS—but 10 are not. Of those 10, two are hunting for CPS jobs (one is subbing in the meantime), two are working in schools but not as teachers, two are teaching outside the district, three are in graduate school, and one is still working to get her credentials from the state. One program coordinator told researchers in the evaluation that “the GYO model is great when the state budget is in average to good condition. When state finances and the economy constrict teacher hiring, district finances and state funding, the model breaks down and is not functional.” Another barrier is the slow trickle of teacher candidates into the schools—just 70 so far have graduated, 33 in Chicago and 37 elsewhere in the state. Grow Your Own is moving to address this issue. Community groups—which partner to offer Grow Your Own—and universities around the state have toughened the screening process for applicants in order to ensure they’re more likely to finish, the evaluation noted.

Community to Name New Back of the Yards High School

The new Back of the Yards high school is one step closer to receiving its name. Members of the Back of the Yards Quality of Life Education Committee met on Nov. 26 to narrow down a list of eight possible names to three. Submitted by members of the community, the eight names varied from basic--like the Back of the Yards International High School-to more honorary names like Joseph B. Meegan High School, after the co-founder of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council. “We wanted to get input from the community, input from the students who will be attending, their parents and other community organization members,” said Patricia Barrera-Brekke, principal of the new Back of the Yards high school. While there were varying opinions of what the high school’s name should be, committee members agreed the three names should reflect the history and the culture of

On Dec. 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the six Back of the Yards elementary schools will open their doors to allow community members to vote for their favorite name. “We want to make the voting available to all the community and students so they can have the opportunity to vote,” said Erin Waitz, director of New Communities Program at the BYNC. The names will be ranked and submitted to the Chicago Board of Education, where the final name will be picked during the January board meeting.

Chicago Sinfonietta Brings Classical Music to the Southwest Side

Classical music is often categorized as exclusive and unpopular. Played in concert halls and theaters, the genre can be seen as stuck up and academic, disconnected from the modern world around us. But, with the help of a classical music orchestra that stigma could soon change. Beginning Dec. 12, the Chicago Sinfonietta will kick off Encuentros, a series of five concerts for families on Chicago’s Southwest Side. In collaboration with neighborhood musicians and organizations, the Chicago Sinfonietta will bring classical music to Chicago’s Latino community. “The reason we are doing this is because there is a wonderful tradition of classical music coming from Mexico, South and Central America, and because the mission of this symphony almost demands that we do a better job at reaching out to that community,” said Jim Hirsch, director of the Chicago Sinfonietta. The concerts will feature chamber-sized ensembles of orchestra members and will collaborate with musical ensembles from the community, including the Chicago Children’s Choir, Sones de Mexico Ensemble Chicago and Mariachi Monumental de Mexico. to have these things come a little bit more towards the neighborhoods of the city, which sometimes makes it difficult even for us to attend some events downtown.” The Chicago Sinfonietta will also offer free workshops and master classes as part of its Encuentros series. These will not only include free musical training, but business and marketing training as well. “The idea here is that we not only want to bring music to these neighborhoods, we want to encourage people who are already involved
in music, and the arts and culture to enhance their skill sets,” said Hirsch. The first Encuentros concert will feature performances by Ozuna’s Advanced Guitar Ensemble and will pair the Chicago Sinfonietta Brass Ensemble with the Pilsen/Little Village Neighborhood Choir of Chicago Children’s Choir. All will perform traditional holiday songs and carols from Latin America that will culminate in the lighting of the school’s Christmas tree. “I definitely think it’s the start of something that can be held for many years,” said Ozuna. The series will continue throughout the summer and will take place in various community venues including Benito Juarez Community Academy and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Hirsch said the concerts will be relaxed and informal, allowing com-
munity members to feel comfortable. “If you’re not an expert about classical music, that doesn’t matter because there [are] going to be other elements in every concert in addition to our musicians that should make it very entertaining and fun,” he said. Sinfonietta de Chicago Trae Música Clásica al Suroeste de la Ciudad
La música clásica a menudo es categorizada como exclusiva e impopular. Tocada en salas de concierto y teatros, el género puede ser visto como presuntuoso y académico, desconectado del mundo moderno que nos rodea. Pero, con la ayuda de una orquesta de música clásica, este estigma pronto podría cambiar. A partir del 12 de diciembre, la Sinfonietta de Chicago arrancará Encuentros, una serie de cinco conciertos para las familias del suroeste de Chicago. Theater Review: Colján
New play by Colectivo El Pozo explores more than a messy, drunken breakup By Lucia Anaya
Much can be learned from a breakup. Often the demons that are kept hidden surface, providing a view into who we really are without our “other halves.” Many times, that reflection gives us an opportunity to reevaluate our actions, our personality and our direction in life. But for Omar, a breakup takes him further than that, allowing him to reflect on his ancestral past, however painful it might be. A story of past and present, “Colján”, the new production by the theater group Colectivo El Pozo, tells the tale of Omar, a Mexican immigrant living Marcopolo Soto during a scene of “Coljan,” playing in Chicago who is driven into a drunken stupor after the ending of his voat Calles y Sueños through Dec. 9. Photo courtesy of Colectivo El Pozo. latile marriage. The daze takes him on a trip to his ancestral past, where he finds himself facing the indigenous side he has tried so hard to suppress.
The one-man show, performed by Marcopolo Soto, showcases the relationship between love and war, the indigenous with the Westernized and the compromise of the self for the sake of others. Acting as both narrator and performer, Soto infuses life into the monologue, whether he is the drunken, foul-mouthed ex-husband, or the masked indigenous version of his past self. His humor and firm grasp of the dialogue allows the audience to follow the story through its many changing settings and characters. The small and quaint venue of Calles y Sueños, where “Colján” is performed, along with the simple set design and minimal use of props proves that a well-written play does not need much assistance to be successful. Thematically, the monologue touches on real issues of identity and expectations,
and how these could influence the people we become, whether purposefully or unintentionally. In a word, “Colján” is unexpected. Written by playwright Raul Dorantes, the script is innovative yet familial. What seems a direct and upfront story unfolds into a deeper and personal narrative that gives viewers a chance to reflect on their own lives. Who are we, really? How does culture mold us? And what demons are we suppressing? Omar asks this about himself, but whether or not he uncovers the answers is for the audience to decide. “Colján” will run through Dec. 9 at Calles y Sueños, 1900 S. Carpenter St. Tickets are $10. Work the Workplace, Don’t Let it Work You: Keys to Move Up The Corporate Ladder By Shantell Jamison
that I made while in college led to tremendous job and internship leads that eventually resulted in me achieving my first goal: to get employed in my field. While at the time it did not feel like I was on the right track, looking back on it I was much more blessed than most. Fast-forward five years, and I can honestly say that while I’ve figured out a pretty solid contingency plan in terms of how to land and maintain work, there’s still the ongoing challenge of getting ahead in the workplace. Often times, college grads are so fixated on getting a job that they don’t think of long-term plans and growth in the company until it is too late. Most of my upward mobility took place early in my career with Radio host, producer and the aim of establishing myself blogger Shantell Jamison as a viable candidate for full time employment. Care About What You Do & Who You Do It For Your level of success in a company will depend on how much you care about its mission, purpose and your role in executing it. If you’re not motivated to do your job, than you can’t expect to move up in the ranks. The first thing you should do is determine if the company still feeds into your master plan of success or whether or not you need to make moves outside of company walls. Have a Clear Plan of Where You Ultimately Want to Go You’ve been hearing it since you graduated from high school. “Have a plan for success!” While corporate society gives us the general blueprint (college -> internship -> job -> career), everyone’s plan is different. Some go to school, choose a major, get a career in their field and are happy and successful. Others go to school, select a major, get a job in their field, end up miserable, do something else and end up happy. Then there are those whose plan does not include college at all. The point is that your plan does not have to mirror that of others, but it must be present even if it evolves down the line. Having a plan which includes setting both long and short-term goals helps you to stay on track and measure how close you are to achieving your dreams. Network with the Idea of Genuine Connections in Mind
Everyone always says that getting ahead is not about what you know but who you know. They often stress networking, the idea of connecting with people in hopes of them paying it forward in your favor. I’m not the biggest fan of the practice, but I do find value in establishing connections if they are authentic. One of the things that my job allows me to do is talk to interesting people. I got the chance to speak to Emmy Award winning talk show host and author Garrard McClendon about this very subject. He told me that the most important thing to do when networking is to establish a genuine, authentic connection. Finding that commonality that makes you click with someone not only results in genuine conversation but could lead to a real desire for the individual to want to help you succeed. Have a Mentor That Has an Authentic Investment in Your Future Success One of the single most important factors in my success is the presence of mentors in my life. These are individuals who have seen something in me that they saw in themselves at one point which is usually potential. It’s important to remain open to accepting advice and mentorship from individuals who have been on the path that you are currently pursuing. They don’t necessarily have to be in the same field of work, but there must be a certain level of professional success that you can as-
pire to achieve. Think About What the Company Needs and How You Can Fulfill It If you’re an innovator, then you’re an asset. Companies not only look for people who can do their job well, but idea generators. What does your company need to achieve its goals? How can you improve on an existing strategy? Paying attention to what the company is currently doing with the idea of either improving an existing strategy or coming up with a completely new idea will put you in the position to move up at some point. You have to show your bosses that you’re valuable in as many ways as possible. Advancing in one’s career is never easy, and it’s an ongoing journey. Even once you have advanced to your highest level of achievement, you still have to work to maintain your position. Maneja el Lugar de Trabajo, No Dejes Que Te Maneje: Claves Para Avanzar En La Escalera Corporativa Por Shantell Jamison Al igual que muchos graduados universitarios, no tenía una idea de lo iba a hacer después de cruzar ese escenario. No tenía trabajo, ni pasantía y sólo un poco más de un año de experiencia en mi ramo. Pero corrí con suerte. Mi título, una licenciatura de las artes en periodismo fue del mejor programa del país. Las conexiones que hice mientras estuve allí dieron lugar a tremendas oportunidades de trabajo y de pasantía que finalmente resultaron en que alcanzara mi primera meta la cual era estar empleada en mi ramo. Aunque en ese entonces no sentía que iba por el camino correcto, ahora que lo veo fui más afortunada que la mayoría. Avanzando cinco años, honestamente puedo decir que aunque he descubierto un plan de contingencia bastante sólido en términos de cómo conseguir y mantener un trabajo, aún sigue el continuo desafío de seguir adelante en el lugar de trabajo. Muchas veces, los graduados universitarios están tan obsesionados con conseguir un trabajo que no piensan en hacer planes a largo plazo y en el crecimiento en la empresa hasta que es demasiado tarde. La mayor parte de mi ascenso tuvo lugar a principios de mi carrera con la meta de establecerme como una candidata via-
ble para un trabajo de tiempo completo. Muchos de mis compañeros salieron con el mismo título y todavía no consiguen puestos en sus respectivos ramos, mucho menos un trabajo de tiempo completo. Sabiendo esto, todavía es para mí fácil caer presa de solo mantener mi trabajo. A pesar de este entendimiento, quiero seguir explorando, expandiendo y maximizando mis talentos. Aquí te doy unos consejos que he aprendido hasta ahora. Dale Importancia a Lo Que Hagas y Para Quién Lo Hagas Tu nivel de éxito en una empresa dependerá de cuanta importancia le des a su misión, propósito y tu papel al ejecutarlo. Si no estás motivado a hacer tu trabajo, no podrás esperar avanzar en los puestos. Lo primero que debes hacer es determinar si la empresa aún queda en tu plan maestro de éxito o si necesitas hacer movimientos fuera de las paredes de la empresa. Ten un Claro Plan de A Dónde Quieres Llegar En Última Instancia Lo has estado escuchando desde que te graduaste de la secundaria. “¡Ten un plan para el éxito!” Aunque la sociedad corporativa nos da el plano general (universidad ->pasantía-> trabajo-> carrera),
el plan de todos es distinto. Algunos van a la escuela, eligen una especialidad, logran una carrera en su ramo y son felices y exitosos. Otros van a la escuela, eligen una especialidad, consiguen un trabajo en su ramo, y acaban miserables, hacen algo distinto y son felices. Luego están aquellos cuyo plan no incluye la universidad. El punto es que tu plan no tiene que ser igual al de los demás, pero tiene que estar presente incluso si se desarrolla más adelante. Tener un plan que incluya fijar metas a corto y largo plazo te ayuda mantenerte en el camino y a medir qué tan cercano estás a lograr tus sueños. Crea Redes de Contacto con la Idea de Conexiones Genuinas en Mente Todos dicen que el salir adelante no se trata de lo que sabes pero de a quién conoces. A menudo se hace hincapié en la creación de redes, la idea de conectarse con la gente con la esperanza de que se te devuelva a tu favor. No soy gran fanática de la práctica, pero encuentro valor en establecer conexiones si éstas son auténticas. Una de las cosas que mi trabajo me permite es hablar con gente interesante. Estas son personas que han visto algo en mí que vieron en sí mismos en un punto el cual suele ser potencial. Es importante mantenerse abierto a aceptar consejo y orientación de las personas que han estado en el camino de lo que actualmente estás ejerciendo. No necesariamente tienen que estar en el mismo ámbito laboral, pero debe haber cierto nivel de éxito profesional que aspiras lograr. Piensa Acerca de lo Que la Empresa Necesita y Cómo Puedes Cumplirlo Si eres innovador, entonces eres valioso. Las empresas no sólo buscan personas que puedan hacer su trabajo bien, pero generadores de ideas. ¿Qué necesita tu
empresa para lograr sus metas? ¿Cómo puedes mejorar una estrategia existente? Nueva obra del Colectivo El Pozo explora más que una turbia, ebria ruptura Por Lucia Anaya Mucho se puede aprender de una ruptura. A menudo los demonios que se mantienen ocultos aparecen, proporcionando una vista de quién en realidad somos sin nuestra “otra mitad”. Muchas veces, esa reflexión nos da la oportunidad de reevaluar nuestras acciones, nuestra personalidad y nuestra dirección en la vida. Pero para Omar, una ruptura lo lleva más allá de eso, permitiéndole reflejar sobre su pasado ancestral, por doloroso que sea. Una historia del pasado y el presente, “Colján”, la nueva producción de grupo teatral Colectivo El Pozo, cuenta la historia de Omar, un inmigrante indocumentado que vive en Chicago que se conduce a una borrachera después del fin de su volátil matrimonio. El aturdimiento lo lleva por un viaje a su pasado ancestral, donde se encuentra enfrentando el lado indígena que tan duramente ha intentado suprimir. El monólogo, interpretado por Marcopolo Soto, muestra la relación entre el amor y la guerra, lo indígena con lo occidentalizado, y el compromiso de uno mismo por el bien de los demás. Actuando como narrador e intérprete, Soto infunde vida al monólogo, ya sea el borracho, malhablado ex esposo, la versión indígena enmascarada de su propio pasado. Su humor y firme comprensión del diálogo permite a la audiencia seguir la historia a través de sus muchos cambiantes escenarios y personajes. El pequeño y pintoresco espacio de Calles y Sueños, donde “Colján” se lleva a cabo, junto con el simple diseño de la escenografía y el uso mínimo de utilería comprueba que una obra bien escrita no necesita de mucha asistencia para ser exitosa. Temáticamente, el monólogo toca los verdaderos problemas y expectativas, y cómo éstas podrían influenciar en las personas que nos convertimos, ya sea a propósito o sin querer.

Escrita por el dramaturgo Raúl Dorantes, el libreto es innovador pero a la vez familiar. Lo que parece una historia directa y abierta, se despliega en un narrativo muy personal que da a los espectadores la oportunidad de reflejar sobre sus propias vidas. ¿Quiénes somos en realidad? ¿Cómo nos da forma la cultura? y Qué demonios estamos suprimiendo? Omar pregunta esto acerca de sí mismo, pero si descubre o no las respuestas, le toca al público decidir. “Colján” se extenderá hasta el 9 de diciembre en Calles y Sueños, 1900 S.
