The body of work presented for ‘Perspective’ is an excerpt from a broader body of work titled ‘Grounding’. The ‘Grounding’ series responds to everyday encounters and experiences of the landscape, depicting an allision between the stationary landscape and the movement of the body within the landscape. The differential interplay between body and landscape document a physical record of somatic grounding. The work represents a fleeting vignette of memory and contemplation, suggesting a syntonic equilibrium between the ebullience of human connection and melancholic meditations on the fragility of existence.

Darren White There’s something profound about a flat 2D, hand drawn representation of perspective—from an architectural plan to an object sketched by a child. I find the thing that can make it even more interesting is the purity of expressing the perspective completely from memory, making mistakes, twisting it and genuinely portraying the deeper emotion that the space or object stirs up. In my landscapes, which are built on raw linework that hold a large element of spontaneity, I find the works that suggest a perspective in an unusual way are the most well-received pieces. I prefer not to plan each piece as I typically feel my first sketch or attempt at representing a place is the most honest and until the painting builds on top of it, the true potential of the composition and perspective cannot be felt. In these latest artworks, I have found myself revisiting the landscape that I grew up with, particularly a view up the west coast of New Zealand from my dining room table. It was a special vista that seemed to alter depending on the mood of the weather. The landscape is burned into my memory in a powerful way and when I draw it the way I create artworks, somehow it looks right even though it is, in so many ways, analytically incorrect.

Jo Young Landscape - Capturing light I have always painted familiar places which have remained in my visual memory. I use a traditional painting method of applying oil paint on canvas or linen. First, I do an Underpainting in raw umber, mapping out lights and darks then applying local colour. Clouds and shadows are emphasised with a final layer of translucent paint. I have always been inspired by the French and Dutch 18th century landscape paintings. I use a pigment known as Paynes Grey invented in 1760 . It is a blue black which can be broken down to make beautiful soft blues.

James Ainslie My whole life has been spent living in and experiencing the beauty of the landscape ,that is Australia. I have been fortunate to spend long periods of time in some particularly stunning places such as the Coorong & the Fleurieu Peninsula ,Flinders ranges , Central Australia ,Kakadu, The Kimberley & of course the sunshine coast . It is this that has inspired most of my paintings over the last 55 years. Sometimes the work manifests as realism & other times it may become more abstracted.
