A NEW LOOK FOR A NEW ERA After 20 years of service, it felt like the right time to retire the TFN logo. Working with Stephen Taylor of Heat Design, we’ve come up with an exciting new look and feel for TFN. It includes a new logo referencing the bar charts which are such an important feature of our events and, through the use of colour, the coming together of two separate entities to create something new. TFN exists to bring together donors and charities, to harness the collective good and to create opportunities for connections that could change world. We hope you like it! FROM OUR PATRON

I am proud to be writing the foreword to this report celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Funding Network. In these pages, you will read not only about the extraordinary sums raised but, most importantly, the incredible difference these funds have made to people’s lives. The Funding Network primarily supports small, grassroots non-profit organisations, selected for their deep understanding of the issues they address, their close connections to the communities they serve, their ability to deliver high quality services on a tight budget, their inspiring leaders, and of course for the positive change they so clearly make.

The amazing thing is that in its first 10 years of life, through its endeavours The Funding Network had raised £4.1m for some 600 charities. A decade later, and that sum now stands at over £17m given by some 36,000 donors and dispersed to more than 2,400 charities. This extraordinary sum has been raised from crowdfunding events in the United Kingdom and those organised by affiliated organisations across the world - from New Zealand, Columbia, Georgia, Turkey, Romania and many more. The Funding Network’s international programme is one of the great success stories of its last 10 years.

None of this would be possible without the many people and organisations that constitute TFN: charities, generous members and donors, international partners and affiliates, dedicated trustees, supportive funders and of course the hard-working staff team.

The Funding Network is a wonderful vehicle through which we, the general public, can donate and be assured that people in real need will benefit from the funds we raise. When donating our money to good causes, there are few ways to make sure it works harder!

I don’t need to tell you that the need is greater than ever. COVID-19 exerted considerable stress on many of the organisations that TFN supports, as they found themselves facing an increase in demand for their services due to increased financial vulnerability, exacerbated mental health issues, declining physical health, worsening educational outcomes, loss of employment, loneliness and many other issues besides. And now we face a costof-living crisis unheard of in recent years, which will undoubtedly take the need for the services of the charities we support to a whole new level.

I urge you to help The Funding Network reach even more people in need amid continuing challenges.

Best wishes indeed, Jon Snow

INTRODUCTION

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this report celebrating The Funding Network’s impact over the last 20 years. It is a snapshot of all we’ve achieved since 2002 and draws together our work in the UK, delivering live and now virtual crowdfunding events alongside our work internationally, training and supporting civil society organisations and fostering new “TFNs”.

Since 2012, we have more than doubled the funds raised in the UK whilst simultaneously professionalising our offer of support to charities to achieve maximum impact. And, as the chart overleaf shows, leveraging TFN’s UK ‘blueprint’ internationally has enabled us to scale our impact exponentially. Through hundreds of international events based on TFN’s model, our international affiliates have raised almost 20 times the amount of the first decade: millions of pounds for well over a thousand charities. The amount raised at these events varies widely, but the TFN spirit and formula is easily recognizable at them all.

2

And what a spirit it is! I once heard a charity presenter describe the experience of pitching as being in ‘a room full of generosity’ and this extends far beyond the funds given. As well as giving money, people are generous with their time, their willingness to listen and learn, and to stand in solidarity with others. And while these things can happen in isolation, there is a power and potency when we experience them together and offer a collective response.

Following his pitch for funds to support rough sleepers in Canterbury this summer, Jason Hanford of Catching Lives made a point of writing to us to say, “You’ve made a change to us and not just through the money. More importantly, you’ve given us an endorsement that we’re doing a good job and that we need to keep fighting.”

TFN TODAY The Funding Network delivers some 15 live, virtual and hybrid events in the UK. At the heart of this is our main programme of six flagship events at which three carefully selected charities covering a wide range of issues pitch for £10k. Flagship events are open to anyone to attend. A strategic funding group of invited guests meets twice a year to raise transformational funding for charities that are already part of the TFN alumni network. We also support a range of partners to host events focused on increasing funding to specific areas and communities. These include Black-led non-profits, LGBT+ rights organisations and the environment. Further details of the organisations funded at these events is included in this report and details of forthcoming events can be found on our website. An exciting new strand of work is our white label programme, through which TFN’s model of live crowdfunding is used in a corporate setting to engage employees in charitable giving. A first white label event with Sage Foundation is scheduled for autumn 2022.

Every moment in history has its own challenges and there is always a need for people to rise up and pave the way for others. But it is difficult to imagine a time when we will stand on such a fragile precipice of intersecting crises. If ever we needed to strengthen the individuals and organisations facing those challenges and show them that they are not alone, it is now.

It has been a privilege to be Chair of The Funding Network for the past five years – 25% of TFN’s life! – and I am immensely grateful to my fellow Trustees, my predecessors Michael Maynard and Simon Wheatley, and of course to Fred Mulder who is generous in every sense.

Thank you for taking the time to read this report. It would be a pleasure to talk about any aspect of our work. Samuel Lush Chair

To our loyal members I say a huge thank you, particularly for your steadfast support these past two difficult years. To the funders recognised at the end of this report, thank you and I hope you share our pride in all that has been achieved with your investment. Lastly, I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the TFN team, past and present.

20 YEARS OF IMPACT The most obvious way to consider The Funding Network’s impact is the funds raised at the events we organise and support in the UK: since 2002, this figure stands at nearly £10 million. But the funds raised in the UK are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

In the course of raising these funds, we make an impact on the long-term sustainability of charities. We bring underthe-radar organisations, often with little fundraising experience or budget, to the attention of highly engaged audiences. We increase the amount given by donors and the diversity of causes that they support. Furthermore, by sharing our model and expertise with mission-aligned partners around the world, we are exponentially scaling our impact. Funds raised over the past 20 years at 283 events in the UK have been distributed amongst some 1,197 small* charities working in the UK and around the world. This is made up of some 12,000 individual donations starting at just £10 and stretching up to £10,000. Each one of those 1,197 charities has received support and pitch coaching from the TFN team to ensure they make the most of the opportunity. For the small charities that TFN supports, the experience is hugely valuable; 96% say that TFN training improved their ability to raise funds elsewhere and over

6

60% were able to leverage further funds as a result of pitching at TFN. Many charities tell us that the skills and self-assurance they gained gave them vital confidence when speaking to other funders. There is real power in knowing that a room full of near strangers believes in you enough to donate thousands of pounds in the space of an evening. Every charity that TFN funds at our flagship events has been nominated by an individual or corporate member. TFN guides members through this process, supporting them to find and assess charities. They act as a sponsor for the charity, and their donation of £250 may be leveraged more than 100 times over! The value of TFN membership to individual and institutional donors is evident from the responses to our member surveys. 94% of members report that they find more charities to support through TFN, 88% report that they give more to charity as a result of TFN, and 56% report that they fund one or more of the charities they have met at a TFN event on an ongoing basis.

Konekt: Tomislav Georgiev

Through our international programme we have hosted study visits and delivered training to groups from 27 countries. This has led to 374 events raising £7.2m for 1,238 charities. From small rural villages to major capital cities, crowdfunding events based on TFN’s model are raising funds to reduce poverty, counter discrimination, protect the environment, develop communities and improve livelihoods. International groups are eligible to apply for a Starter Grant of €1,000 for each of their first three events. These grants are used primarily to establish the crucial principle of match funding at the events. Funded by the Frederick Mulder Foundation, we have made 86 Starter Grants to date. The value of these grants is immense and, in many cases, leads to the establishment of regular live crowdfunding events, often in locations where community philanthropy is a powerful tool for challenging dominant and regressive narratives. So, while we are hugely proud to have raised almost £10 million in the UK and a further £7 million through our international affiliates, we know that the true value of our work is much, much greater. As we constantly remind the charities we work with when they pitch for funding, it’s not all about the numbers.

A note on terminology The vast majority of organisations that TFN funds are registered UK charities (c. 80%) however we also fund organisations such as Community Interest Companies, which have charitable aims but are not registered as charities. The term “charity” and “non-profit” are used interchangeably in this report.

THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES Behind the numbers is what really matters: the lives that are changed as a result of the funds we raise, the support we give and the connections we make. Here is just a handful of the inspiring stories we’ve been privileged to hear and support over the past 20 years.

FLAMINGO CHICKS Total funds raised £48K Donors engaged 75 An inclusive community which gives all children the opportunity to enjoy dance, provides a vital peer support network for parents and carers, champions intergenerational volunteering, and delivers global outreach and advocacy. Katie Sparkes, CEO and Founder, came up with the idea because of the lack of inclusive activities for her daughter with cerebral palsy. She first pitched at our Young Funding Network in 2014 when the fledgling organisation was less than a year old. They raised £1,837, enabling them to set up an inclusive dance class in Bristol. Since then, Flamingo Chicks has pitched at five events and has grown from a community group to a national charity supporting over 3,000 children each year. Katie says, “This has been an incredible learning journey which spring-boarded our charity onto great things! We widened our networks and developed amazing and loyal individual supporters.” flamingochicks.org

Working to build services that can provide national, equitable access to those who need donor milk, such as sick premature babies in intensive care units and new mums with cancer.

A Rwanda-based charity which aims to create sustainable and locally-led teacher training initiatives, enabling all children across the country to receive quality education, become global advocates for change and break cycles of poverty.

A Community Interest Company which aims to give as many women and girls as possible opportunities in football and in life by supporting each other on and off the pitch.

Founded in 2017 by Dr Natalie Shenker and Gillian Weaver, Human Milk Foundation first pitched in 2019 for funds to take on more milk donors and increase the mothers and babies they support. In 2021, they raised a further £25,000 towards a network of Donor Milk Hubs across the country. This network has enabled babies to access milk in areas where previously none was available. They now work in 53 hospitals and have provided donor milk to 10,000 babies. Natalie told us, “TFN was a turning point enabling us to meet the demand for donor milk. The training we received prepared us to pitch to other funders and we’ve secured a new corporate partnership and a funder. Your support has enabled us to save hundreds of babies’ lives and to help many more families.” humanmilkfoundation.org

Amy Barnecutt, CEO of APIE, first pitched in September 2020 from her home in Rwanda under Covid-19 restrictions. Fortunately, Amy’s worries that the power would go off did not materialise and APIE raised funds to ensure quality teaching and learning could continue despite the pandemic. Just over a year later, Amy returned to pitch at our Strategic Funding Group. There she secured £24,223 to scale up APIE’s work by sharing its teacher training programme across Rwanda. Amy said, “Pitching at TFN reminded me that there are like minded and passionate people everywhere. At a time when I was feeling isolated in a locked down country, TFN re-opened the doors and windows of the world to me.”

The Laces Community Club was founded by Katee Hui as a pilot project in Hackney in 2011 and has since expanded across London and Manchester with ambitions to grow further. Laces was first funded by TFN’s Youth Network in 2013 and at three subsequent events. Funding from our celebrity event in 2021 allowed them to scale mental and social health support for their members and contributed to an emergency funding pot for those experiencing hardship during the pandemic. Since 2011, Laces has supported 700 young women both on and off the pitch. Katee told us, “The support from TFN has strengthened us and the relationships within the club. We made many connections including five new volunteers and have been able to achieve greater scale and impact.”

An award-winning charity that supports care-experienced young people as they move into their first home so they can confidently transition into independent living and thrive.

Five Talents UK first pitched at TFN back in 2011, and then again at our celebrity event in 2021 where they were championed by David Dimbleby. At the event in 2021, they raised over £20,000 to enable marginalised women in Democratic Republic of Congo become economically empowered through savings groups and business training. This funding helped them to establish 101 new savings groups and to continue supporting a further 76 in one of the world’s poorest countries. To date, Five Talents’ programmes have supported over 260,000 people across the world, 77% of whom are women.

Working to break down barriers to getting more disabled people into STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) through a diverse programme of creative sensory science workshops, unique Work Inspiration Trips, virtual labs and its SEN (Special Education Needs) in STEM network.

Settle first pitched at our partnership event with Year Here, a social enterprise incubator, in 2014 when the organisation was a few months old. Settle went on to pitch at five other events and has grown from an idea to an award-winning charity which has supported over 450 young people to date. Having recently secured a five-year grant from the National Lottery, Settle is making huge strides towards achieving its vision that no young person leaving care experiences homelessness. CEO and Founder Rich Grahame said, “TFN had a transformational impact on Settle. You were the first funder to support our pilot and supported us over the following years to continue to grow and mature. It’s rare that a funder provides consistent support throughout your growth journey.” wearesettle.org

Rachel Lindley, CEO of Five Talents, told us, “The most obvious benefit was the funds raised on the night but we have also used the pitch many times since with supporters. This was a massive asset to us in connecting with people during lockdown. Through our relationship with TFN we not only achieved our fundraising objectives on the night, we also acquired two new long-term supporters after they requested meetings with our team. For us, the event was a wonderful way to grow our network at a time when we couldn't even leave our homes.” fivetalents.org.uk

10

Rhiannon Matchette, Project Manager at Lightyear, first joined us for a special children’s event in 2016 where Lightyear raised £1,400 towards their sensory science workshops. Rhiannon went on to pitch at two further events, including at the height of the pandemic where the funds raised enabled them to keep supporting disabled children and their families. The tiny team has now worked with 5,250 children, delivered 911 workshops and their virtual workshops have had more than 250,000 views. Rhiannon said, “Working with TFN was an incredible opportunity which had a transformational impact on our charity. Our work is quite niche, and it improved our ability to ‘sell’ ourselves and gave us access to new networks. Plus, we were able to use the funds to meet core costs which is gold-dust for a small charity.” lightyearfoundation.org

STRONGER – MORE RESILIENT CHARITIES Many charities report that the support and training TFN offers is as valuable, if not more so, than the funds they raise. This is because it strengthens their long-term fundraising capacity. For some charities, working with TFN is the first opportunity they’ve had to focus on how they talk about their work and its impact. Often, they are surprised at just how compelling their story is and how positively people respond to it when they hear it at the event.

Specifically, TFN offers charities the following Support through the application process, including feedback on a draft application Feedback for unsuccessful applications to understand the decision and identify areas for improvement Professional pitch coaching workshop for selected applicants to help them prepare their pitch and feel confident in their ability to speak to our audience 1:1 rehearsals to fine tune presentations Support engaging their own supporter networks in the event

Over the coming year, we will enhance our offer to charities to include Comprehensive programme of support for applicant and selected charities, including increased opportunities to interact with TFN members and gain valuable donor insights A fully accessible application process, with tailored support where needed Alumni programme offering opportunities for further learning and skills development Matching service between members and alumni charities Increased opportunities for promotion via a new TFN website and social media For further information about our work with charities, contact Jennie@thefundingnetwork.org.uk

Since 2017, TFN has joined forces with the Environmental Funders Network to raise funds for, and strengthen the capacity of, organisations protecting our environment and addressing climate change. Currently, just 6%* of total UK foundation funding is given to such work and yet as we know only too well, these are arguably the biggest challenges we face.

Jane Cabutti of the Environmental Funders Network said “We were keen to partner with TFN to apply its crowdfunding model to small, highly impactful charities we wanted to see flourish. The new donors acquired and money raised has made an enormous difference to the participating charities. In addition to the funds raised at the events, at least £1.2m is reported to have been leveraged as a result of the events. All the charities reported that the training they received from TFN supported their wider fundraising.”

James Wallace, former CEO of Beaver Trust and new CEO of River Action UK, said “Having set up Beaver Trust just a year before we pitched at EFN Live in 2020, the impact of raising £20,000 was considerable. The funding helped us form a national partnership with Rivers Trust, Woodland Trust and National Trust and Defra to deliver a £15million farm payment scheme to incentivise the creation of 3500 hectares of river buffers on seven river catchments."

CITY FOR LGBT+ City For LGBT+ is a four-way partnership between TFN, GiveOut*, Consortium* and TFN corporate member, Macquarie to raise funds for, and strengthen the capacity of, organisations advocating for the rights of LGBT+ communities. According to the 2019-20 Global Resources Report on government and philanthropic support for LGBT+ communities worldwide, total foundation giving was less than 35 cents out of every $100 given. In other words, a fraction of one percent. And yet some estimates put the LGBT+ population at 10%. Clearly there is a need to increase funds to meet the community’s needs.

LGBTQI+ asylum seekers are often cut off from communities from their countries of origin and rejected by their families. To be granted asylum, LGBTQI+ people have to ”prove” their sexual orientation or gender identity. This challenge is compounded by the fact that many experience shame and are not accustomed to speaking about emotions, and the Home Office often sets the legal bar too high. Rainbow Migration pitched at City for LGBT+ in 2021 for support with their core costs to enable them to continue their vital work at a time when a changing policy environment was making fundraising very challenging. Executive Director, Leila Zadeh said, “It was extremely valuable to pitch for funding towards our core costs at City for LGBT+ and to be able to invite our own contacts along to the event as this gave us an opportunity to make new connections through them.”

BLACK FUNDING NETWORK Since 2020, we’ve been supporting long time member Patricia Hamzahee in her work to establish a Black Funding Network based on TFN’s model. BFN is a community of individuals and institutions coming together to support African, Caribbean and mixed heritage founded and led non-profit organisations. They specifically support those projects working on solutions to social mobility, poverty alleviation, racial equity, education and youth services, community development, history and heritage, arts and cultural advancement, and social advancement.

Patricia says, “While we don’t have exact figures for how much charitable giving in the UK goes to black-led organisations, we know it’s a tiny amount and much less than the 4% of the population that African and Caribbean heritage people represent (as at 2011 Census). Of the £11 billion that was given to charity in 2020 (of which the most popular cause was animal welfare), 4% would be £440 million that could support our communities.” Black Funding Network seeks to raise funds for black-led charities and crucially, address the disparities in support that our communities face by cultivating an intentional community of giving.”

TFN’s international work dates back to 2005 when Fred Mulder inspired a small group of Torontonians with his experience setting up TFN in the UK. Over the next seven years TFN Toronto, led by a small group of volunteers, raised over £392k for more than 45 national and international charities. Fast forward to 2011, and two separate approaches led to the establishment of what is now known as TFN International, a programme of training and support for groups seeking to establish a registered charitable entity modelled on TFN and civil society organisations wishing to use a giving circle model to support the development of philanthropy.

In all, we have supported groups in 27 countries (see map) to learn and adopt the TFN model as well as a diaspora network of Romanians using the TFN model to repatriate funds to support social change. TFN NEW ZEALAND TFN New Zealand has deep roots back to the UK. It was founded in 2014 and chaired since by Nick Edgar who was introduced to TFN by his sister in law, Pip Edgar a member in the UK. Today it is co-led by Tim Pare, founder of Tea Leaf Trust, a much admired TFN funded charity which delivers education programmes in Sri Lanka. In September 2022, TFN NZ passed the incredible milestone of $1M NZD raised. This is all the more impressive given the organisation is run on only 20 hours a week. Congratulations to Tim, his Co-Lead Anusha Bhana, Nick and all the trustees and supporters of TFN NZ!

Tim said “As well as establishing crowdfunding in NZ, we have also innovated a number of initiatives around the TFN model. These include HelpfromHome, combining virtual crowdfunding with a two-week on-line campaign during the pandemic, and a training programme titled the Generosity Generator through which we trained 34 grassroots charities in how to run a successful crowdfunding campaign. We were proud to be recognised with the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand Award for Excellence in Innovation award for it.” thefundingnetwork.org.nz

TFN INTERNATIONAL

SUPPORTING CIVIL SOCIETY TO FLOURISH Fred

Sharing TFN’s model with international organisations working to establish the practice of philanthropy as part of a wider effort to restore or establish civil society has been hugely rewarding. Fueled by the belief that when people get involved in their communities, things change for the better, TFN’s methodology has proven invaluable in engaging and educating donors about causes they can support, promoting efficiency, transparency and accountability in contexts where trust in civic involvement takes years to build.

ROMANIAN DIASPORA FUNDING NETWORK (RDFN) One of our first international partnerships was with ARC Romania, a national organisation established to encourage philanthropy as a means of social change in the wake of the fall of communism. Since 2012, we’ve worked with ARC to train and support the growing number of newly established community foundations in the TFN model. To date, 79 crowdfunding events have been organised across Romania raising £282,000 for 240 charities. Through ARC, we met the dynamic, Ioana Traistă. When she moved to Brussels, she wanted to maintain a connection to Romania and to support the work of charities that contribute to positive social change. In 2017, together with a group of young professional Romanians living in Brussels, she organised a first event raising funds for progressive causes. The Brussels network of young Romanians has organised six TFN crowdfunding events, raising over £50,000 for 18 projects. As the word got out, other Romanians living in diaspora communities wanted to join and now the Romanian Diaspora Funding Network counts on groups or organisations in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Helsinki, London, Milan, and USA. All the people involved in organising the events, selecting the projects and maintaining communication with donors are dedicated volunteers. Ioana said, “I can’t believe it is five years since the idea of a diaspora donor circle germinated. We would not be here without all the support we received from the entire TFN team. It's such a privilege to work with amazing teams both in Brussels and within the network and such a responsibility to look forward and make sure diaspora has a say in Romania. Thank you for believing in us all and giving us this opportunity.”

KONEKT MACEDONIA

Speaking of the project, Nikica Kusinikova, of Konekt said, “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the female-agricultural producers were not able to sell their products on the market and this led to significant decreases in their income and they faced poverty. The donations collected at the event were used to help the organisation set up a first on-line market where women could make their produce available to consumers. For their third event, 70 people gathered in a summer garden and supported three projects: the production of a film featuring children with disabilities promoting diversity, a women’s shelter offering emergency services and a youth summer camp where young people with and without disabilities could come together as peers. “The event was an opportunity to experience the beauty of donation and the strength of our connection. It was exciting to witness how the donations spontaneously multiplied. Some donated as a family, others on behalf of their neighbours or in honour of those who are no longer with us. We cleverly encouraged each other to achieve the goal. Every penny donated had equal significance.”

We’ve enjoyed working with Konekt Macedonia who have staged some of the most creative and heartfelt events we’ve seen – and that’s saying something! Having organized just one live crowdfunding event prior to the global pandemic, they bravely held a first virtual event in December 2020. Rural coalition from Kumanovo was one of the three projects funded at the event.

TFN EVENTS AS FORERUNNERS FOR ORGANISED COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY In 2020 we began work in Latin America with partners at the very start of a journey towards establishing organised community philanthropy in their countries and who had identified the TFN model as a vehicle to introduce the concept. In Colombia, we worked with Evaluar and Azai Consultores on plans for a first TFN event – delivered virtually - in November 2020. The organising committee named the event in Colombia “SoidariDar” – in Spanish ‘solidaridad’ means ‘solidarity’ and ‘dar’ means ‘to give’, thus creating a beautiful word blend to express the intrinsic values of the model. For the first event in November 2020, they raised £1,550 for two projects from 48 donors to support 340 families. One of the charities pitching at the event to reconstruct a community centre reported that “this methodology motivates people to show solidarity and to understand that they can contribute from any capacity." (Coonvite Cooperative, SolidariDar 2020). In 2021 the team organised another two giving circle events and we are delighted that the success of the TFN model has contributed to the establishment of a national foundation, “TerritoriA” which will support groups to establish community foundations and deliver crowdfunding events, as part of a wider programme of work, as we have seen so successfully in so many countries over the past 10 years.

TFN MEMBERS – INDIVIDUAL & CORPORATE

WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT OUR MEMBERS Members are central to TFN’s work, finding and selecting the charities we support, providing a reliable bedrock of donations at events, and contributing to TFN’s own costs through their membership contributions. Corporate members host events at their premises, meeting all associated costs and since the pandemic, have provided vital match funds to accelerate the giving, enabling us to increase the funds we raised for charity during the pandemic by as much as 70%. We are grateful to the following members for sharing their experiences which we hope will inspire others to join us!

Meeting and hearing from founders and prime movers is both inspiring and hugely helpful in deciding who and what to support. We have continued to support a number of charities that we met through TFN but two that particularly stay with us are Flamingo Chicks, which organises ballet classes for kids with any form of disability and Bread and Roses which runs floristry training programs for refugee women to help them into employment.

I joined TFN having been invited to a couple of events by Fred Mulder and have remained so ever since. I have continued to support one of the organisations I met at my first event, CAMFED which supports vulnerable girls into education in Africa. More recently, Refugees at Home, which I met in 2018, has become a beneficiary of the charitable foundation I run, the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust. TFN provides a wonderful forum in which to learn about so many organisations that I would not necessarily hear about otherwise.

I’ve got a huge amount out of my membership. I’ve sponsored four brilliant charities that I’m passionate about to pitch at events - Harpenden Spotlight on Africa, Human Milk Foundation, Muscle Help Foundation and Catching Lives – and they have collectively raised over £55,000! The company I work for matches employees’ giving and so I’ve been able to substantially increase the amount I’m giving to charities I meet at TFN which is very satisfying!

Corporate Member since 2017

One of TFN’s first corporate members, Ennismore Foundation has supported well over 200 charities over the past 15 years at events in London, Bristol and Oxford.

Rathbone Greenbank is one of TFN’s longest standing members and have partnered with us to deliver events 31 events in London, Oxford, Bristol and Norfolk that have raised over £1,000,000. For more than 100 charities. They have also supported projects including a short promotional film, outreach to extend our UK network and played a pivotal role in our online events.

Since joining TFN, Octopus has donated over £57,000 to 83 charities. Funds are given away at events by a group of Octopus employees who work together to determine how to allocate corporate funds, often giving personally as well. Additionally, Octopus has hosted three events that have raised £135,000.

“It’s gratifying that the first two charities we supported – Sponsored Arts for Education (SAFE Kenya) and Climate Outreach Information Network which pitched at the first TFN Oxford event in 2008 are still going strong. A highlight was the support we were able to give to the Orchid Project, a pioneer in the fight to end female genital cutting. We first met and funded them at a strategic funding event in 2012. I was so taken by their work which particularly resonated with me as the father of three girls, that I met with them after the event and made a larger donation. I’ve also been very pleased that members of the team (at Ennismore Fund Management) have taken advantage of the opportunity to attend TFN events on the Foundation’s behalf, giving away funds to charities they’ve been inspired by. Looking ahead, we’re excited about targeting issues through the themed events focusing on the environment, climate change and disadvantage. We’re proud to have made grants towards TFN’s core costs for over a decade, recognising the value of the service it delivers to charities, donors and foundations like ours.”

"Rathbone Greenbank’s vision is to empower clients to invest their money as a force for good. This resonates and aligns well with TFN, who take an innovative approach to tackling environmental and social issues and who are focussed on the transition to a healthier planet and a more equitable society, by bringing people together to enact change. Through our support of TFN, we can have greater, faster and measurable impact, and engage with new audiences interested in finding out how investment can be used to bring about improvements in corporate sustainability. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that the impact of many of the charities I meet through TFN stays with me long after their presentations. It has been a privilege to be involved."

"We see TFN as a really valuable way of giving our people another way to give back and we also find that it encourages philanthropic behaviours. We nominate charities, have employees who sit on the selection panels and of course we send teams of Octopus people along to events. We’re always interested in talking to small impactful charities about the work they’re doing so being part of a network that introduces us to these organisations at an important stage in their journey is something we care very much about. To broaden the diversity of charities we give to, we’re planning to attend even more TFN events this year including Black Funding Network and EFN Live. We know our employees will be really excited about this." Louise Skinner, Head of Octopus Giving, Octopus Group

LOOKING AHEAD

It is only right that a report celebrating the impacts of a network founded 20 years ago contain many, many thank yous. I would like to extend mine to my wonderful colleagues both past and present – particularly the indefatigable Jennie Jeffery, our generous members, our inspiring founders, the hundreds of charity partners, donors to the Swan Appeal, and the steadfast institutional funders who have supported TFN’s work. I would like to offer my special thanks to the international colleagues that we have worked with to expand TFN’s work around the world. It has been a privilege to support your vital work. Also to the funders of that work – the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust – for the funding and encouragement they have consistently given for over a decade. The challenges of the last two years have been immense and while TFN has emerged from the pandemic in good health, it would not be the case were it not for the hands-on support of our Chair, Samuel Lush, his fellow Trustees, and our Company Secretary, Caroline Swanson. As well as supporting me to steer the ship, the Trustees, led by Kawika Solidum, have been alongside us as we renewed our theory of change and developed a new strategic plan.

24

Lastly, I want to thank Fred Mulder who it has been the greatest pleasure to work alongside both at TFN, where he has been a visionary founder, Chair, international ambassador and of course generous member, and as the Director of his family foundation for a period of time. I know I speak for many when I express my immense gratitude for all Fred has given and continues to give to TFN. This is not the time or the place to lay out a detailed business plan, but to the right you will see the five strategic priorities which will inform and guide our work over the coming years. To be clear, it is not that any these things have been absent from our work over the past 20 years - far from it. Rather, where they have emerged organically and flourished, we will in the future be making intentional strategic choices to embed them in all that we do.

When I joined TFN as a maternity cover many years ago, I confess, I couldn’t quite get my head around what I had stumbled upon. People giving up their time to give away their money? Repeatedly!? And yet they did. But it didn’t take me long to understand why; they were inspired by the leadership of others and particularly Fred; they valued the opportunity to meet people whose lives were very different from their own and to learn from them; they appreciated TFN’s commitment to efficiency and transparency; and their money worked really hard. In the blink of an eye, a £100 donation was a £10,000 grant. But more than anything, they – we – felt connected. To each other, to the brilliant charities we meet, to the people they in turn serve and the problems they address. At a TFN event, we are part of something bigger than ourselves. To the many people with whom I have shared that experience over the years, thank you and to anyone looking for it – well, please come and join us! Eugenie Harvey CEO

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES 2022-2027 1

Diversity and inclusivity will run through everything we do like a stick of rock. Where there is money there is power, and having established a robust, inclusive methodology for distributing money, we are positioned to address this head on. We will proactively engineer all facets of our work to widen access and participation, monitoring the progress we are – or aren’t – making and being accountable through transparent reporting.

2

Innovation has been one of the most exciting aspects of the past decade of TFN’s work. Innovation in the UK led to our work internationally and that in turn has fostered numerable exciting innovations. For example, the white label event offer that TFN Australia has pioneered to engage companies and the diaspora model which has been established by our Romanian partners. Not to mention the many opportunities that virtual events and digital technology offer more broadly. Innovation will enable us to reach new audiences, target particular needs, and ensure that TFN remains relevant and impactful.

3

With a tried and tested model delivered through a set of wellestablished core processes there is, as we have already seen through TFN International, immense potential to replicate and scale. And, as the analysis in this report demonstrates, the value of so doing is inarguable. As we continue to improve our operational efficiency and our ability to manage data through investment in digital systems, we will look for more opportunities to replicate and scale our work so that we increase the support available to small charities year on year.

4

These objectives will only be met with a sustainable business model. Over the coming years we will work to diversify income to meet our own costs. Since moving from a volunteer-led organisation to one with a small team of paid staff, TFN’s costs have been met through a combination of earned income (membership contributions and a 7.5% levy on funds raised at events), grant funding and, more recently, the triennial Swan Appeal generously supported by Members. Over the coming years, we will increase the contribution that earned income makes to our costs and decrease our reliance on fundraising. The ratio between the cost of running TFN and the funds we raise for charities will continue to be an important focus of Trustee attention, ensuring we remain attractive to members and deliver value to charities.

5

With a solid track record of 20 years, over the coming decade, TFN will step into a leadership role in the philanthropic sector. We will share our impact, experience and learnings so that they may inspire and inform others and, in the case of our international affiliates often working in contexts which are hostile to the social change that collective giving enables, strengthen their arm.

25

THANK YOU

Michael Maynard and Frederick Mulder

When I started The Funding Network with three friends in 2002, I hoped that it would thrive, and that indeed it might spread to a couple of towns and cities outside London. I never envisaged that 20 years later, we would have worked with partners in 27 countries and together raised over £17 million! It of course also never occurred to me that, 18 years on, a global pandemic would not only make our work more important but, with the necessity of livestreaming our events to enable us to keep going, would also help us to raise more funds for the charities that our Members continue to find and to bring to us for support. Our funding events look very different now to how they did 20 years ago. They are shorter, the audiences larger, the presentations more polished – and as I’ve already mentioned, they are also livestreamed online. The Funding Network itself has developed a great deal too. We have a staff team of five, a beautiful new logo and ambitious plans for the future. But for all that, the spirit of collaboration and the ethos of generosity which are at the heart of what we do remain the same. These are now helpfully encapsulated in the term crowdfunding, which is very useful when describing TFN and which did not exist 20 years ago! But it has helped us to place ourselves within a movement which values collaboration and collective giving for greater impact. The various parts of our network, and especially our donors and the charities that come to present, all know now that acting together is more effective than acting alone.

26

Deep thanks must go to the wonderful charities that present their work to us, to our members, and to those who simply come to our events and give. None could thrive without the others, and one could even argue that there is a kind of magic to The Funding Network, manifesting itself in ways far beyond the funds that are raised. Special thanks must also go to the many partners and volunteers who are a crucial part of our network. Our affiliates across the world, from New Zealand to Romania, from Australia to Russia, are an inspiring bunch and we are very happy that they want to be part of the network, sometimes in very challenging contexts. It has been a great personal pleasure for me to have been at the initial events of many of these groups, and to see how they have continued to thrive. Watching some of the streamed events from our affiliates in central Europe or South America, for example, is quite an experience, as even though the language is different, there is something instantly recognizable about the format and the energy present in the room.

We are also grateful to the dedicated volunteers who have held TFN events in their own local areas across the UK, in particularly those in Oxford, Bristol and Hertfordshire. Finally, I must thank those who help to fund TFN’s own operational costs. We concentrate on providing opportunities for social change charities to present to those who come to our events, but of course our organisation also has expenses, and we are very grateful to those funders who value our work and provide the support that allows us to continue working, and indeed to thrive. I hope that this report gives you some sense of the incredible difference The Funding Network makes. Whether you are a member, a giver at our events, a charity partner, an affiliate, a volunteer, or a funder of TFN itself, thank you – each and every one of you is a vital part of our community.
