FORREST COMMUNITY GYM

Forrest Successful in Colac Otway Shire Grants Program Several community groups have been successful in their applications to the current council community grants program. In the Community category, the Forrest & District Neighbourhood House received $10,000 to implement the Community Gym at the new Forrest Community Hub (xDELWP site). The Neighbourhood House will now work towards procuring equipment and establishing policies and procedures to make the gym a safe and sustainable place for all to enjoy. The Forrest Horse Riding Club has received $4,000 to put towards much needed club room improvements.

In the Events category, the Forrest Soupfest received $5,000 for the continuation of the popular community fundraiser and the Forrest Men’s Shed now has $2,000 for the official Grand Opening of their shed later in the year. Two other major events run in Forrest also received funding again this year. Rapid Ascent’s Otway Odyssey and Great Otway Gravel Grind, and Southern Exposure’s Run Forrest Trail Run each received $5,000 ensuring there continues to be great opportunities to attract visitors to come and stay and for local community groups and businesses to grow and prosper. Community Activities Solar Buddys at Forrest Forrest Primary School students have recently participated in the Australian Solar Buddy charitable foundation’s school program where they learnt about other children and families throughout the world who live in energy poverty (18% of the world’s population have no access to electricity.) This gave the children a chance to learn how in developing countries the lack of light prevents children from learning and developing skills which would end their cycle of poverty, as well as how the need for the use of domestic kerosene severely damages their health and the environment. They also learnt about solar technology and how to assemble the solar buddy lights, with the senior students partnering the junior students to build their solar lights. As well as the construction of the lights the students have written a letter to their “Buddy” which will be sent together with their light to a child in need, and after the lights have been delivered to the children we will get a report back letting us know where they have gone. Alongside learning about energy poverty and the limitations it can cause, the students have learned that a simple solution like a solar light can make such a difference to the outcomes of children living in the

developing world, where something as small as a solar light can be the solution to help transform lives. Nerrida Macdonald

Community Update Mountain Bike Club and Trail Update The club was looking forward to seeing how the plans for the trails were progressing at the June 20th consultation meeting. The plans supplied on the day for comment were, for the re jigging of the skills park at the Southern Trail Head Forrest and for the proposed flow trail system, also in the Southern system. It was exciting to see Dirt Art’s proposal for the expansion and redesign of the layout. There is no doubt that the original skills area was very well received by local and visiting riders alike, and has been a great piece of infrastructure. The expansion of that area to include a bitumen pump track and extra trail features would provide an even better rider experience and asset for the town. The inclusion of a bike wash would also be an excellent idea as that would be in keeping with most riders wish to keep their bikes in a clean and safe state. The new proposal for the flow trails have a logical look to them and will provide a more enjoyable experience that is more in line with the Gravity trail ethos. Community concerns regarding the original trail proposals impact on homeowners were one of the drivers in the redesign. It would appear that those concerns were addressed while at the same time providing an improved trail experience, so that should be a win all round. The scope of the project has been expanded to look at all of the existing trails as opposed to selected key trails in the original scope. This will make the project draw out a little longer, however the delay will contribute to the betterment of the trails and to the ability to remain as an economic provider for the community and the region. Over the last few months DELWP has engaged a trail builder to carry out improvements and rectification works to some of the existing trails. These are progressing well and the works will be a great improvement in the selected

BREW CREW Social Rides Depart 6.15pm Thursdays from Forrest Brewery

areas, providing some new experiences and at the same time improvements in sustainability. As a bi-product of the works there will be some temporary closures while the trail surfaces consolidate and bed in. The club has been continuing with its usual trail maintenance works addressing drainage, vegetation and most recently some degradation on the Western side of Yaugher Superloop. The next maintenance day will be on August the 4th, meeting at 10am at the Mountain bike club depot followed by a BBQ after the works. Sandy Maxwell

Community Update Run Forrest Trail Run 2019 Thank you, Forrest, for hosting the 7th Annual Run Forrest Trail Run. The day began at 7.30am as runners arrived for registration. Greeted by so many happy faces many had come from far and wide. The event kicked off with some slow stretching Yoga under the big old gum trees on the banks of the Barwon River. Kids were playing in the village as competitors warmed themselves by the roaring fires. Another great start to Run Forrest 2019. The weather was perfect for a winter’s day in Forrest. The rains from the week prior created plenty of slide but didn’t dampen the trails to much in fact the trails were mostly fast and firm. Jacob McKie took a minute on Jim Teasdale from the previous year in the 6km. Although 21km and 10km paces were slightly slower, possibly due to the new berm extensions on the Red Carpet. With the winter sun shining on another brilliantly fun Run Forrest we must say a huge thank you to the Forrest Soupfest for providing the post-race entertainment and delicious soup. Also a big thanks to the Forrest Brewery and Colac Otway Shire for sponsoring the 7th Run Forrest. Last, but not least, thank you to all the amazing trail runners who came to experience the beauty of the Otway Trails – well done!!!

Run Forrest Trail Run 2020 registration will open in November. Happy Running Bindy Sheehan Southern Exposure www.runforest.com.au

Forrest’s greatest community fundraising event, the annual Forrest SoupFest was once again held on the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June. As always, the organising committee anxiously await the weather forecasts, but sunshine graced the day with a sunny winters 16-degree temperature, no wind, and a relaxing bush setting. This year, the 14th event managed by the Forrest Lions Club, saw the biggest crowds, bringing 60007000 people to the little Otways hamlet of Forrest. An improved change of soup service and the greatest volunteer involvement to date, the Forrest people did themselves proud in showcasing a fun, caring, supportive and engaged community. All community groups had an opportunity to raise funds, from the CFA and Forrest Horse Riding Club on car parking duties, the Forrest Primary School providing kids entertainment, soup production provided by the Forrest Men’s Shed, Forrest Horse Riding Club, Forrest Lions Club, Forrest Special Events Club, Apollo Bay Football Netball Club, Forrest General Store and Platypi Chocolate café all contributing to feeding the masses with 10 soup stalls in total. Sixty other food, beverage and local craft stalls provided a fun festival atmosphere, with musical entertainment provided by Colac’s Freeza youth group and the Forrest Primary School choir. The traditional SoupFest Competitions also had the greatest number of entries in 2019, with local political representatives judging including Libby Coker, Richard Di Natale, Richard Riordan and Joe McCracken all making their way to Forrest. Emma Ashton, Forrest SoupFest President, said, “this was the greatest SoupFest ever. Each year we aim to improve the event, and this year we got it right.”

Pumpkin soup by Sandy Maxwell

INGREDIENTS 2 butternut pumpkins or equivalent amount in any pumpkin 2 apples 1 whole garlic, segmented but with the skin still on the cloves 1 leek 2 white onions 4-6 rashes of bacon 1 ltr beef stock Olive oil

8 Forrest Post July 2019

METHOD Heat oil over medium high in a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Add chorizo, using the back of a fork to break into small crumbles. Cook until chorizo is browned and crispy, about 8-10 minutes. Remove chorizo with a slotted spoon and set aside. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons oil. Add onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, carrots, celery, and mushrooms and cook until veggies are soft and completely cooked down, another 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add wine, scraping up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Let wine reduce by half, about 2 minutes. Add chicken broth and beans and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer, add cooked chorizo, and let simmer for 10 minutes. Season to taste. Add torn kale leaves and let cook until slightly wilted, about 2 minutes. Serve in bowls with freshly grated Parmesan, red pepper flakes, and crusty bread (if desired). recipe from TheFeedFeed.com

Skin and seed the pumpkins and slice 20mm wide slices. Quarter and seed the apples, and place them along with the garlic gloves in a roasting tray, toss those ingredients in oil. Put into a heated 200 degree oven until they’ve got a pleasing light roasted look about them (don’t burn the garlic). Meanwhile slice and fry the bacon, set that aside. Slice the leek and onions and in a stock pot, cook them till soft and clear and then chuck the bacon back in. Take your roasted pumpkin and apple and place that in the stock pot and then squeeze the pulp out the garlic cloves into the mix. Add your beef stock and then simmer the ingredients, stirring occasionally until the pumpkin starts to break down. If you feel the need you can season it to taste. Hit it up with a electric Whiz Stick ( make sure its a metal one, I used a cheap plastic one once and the heat warped it out of shape, never to be used again) or blitz it in a blender to get a reasonably smooth texture. Sorry there’s no real time frames, its all about the vibe. Serve it up with a dollop of sour cream, some finely sliced chives and some crispy bread.

History Our History Archive I never cease to be amazed at the real life, fascinating and sometimes sad stories we have been fortunate to have had contributed to our archive. You can open any document and get immediately absorbed. For example: “Grandpa (John Owens from Ireland who settled on Roadknight’s Creek in 1884 and married Mary Grant, daughter of the first settler in this area) began to realise that there was not any future while the family (12 children and 2 adults) stayed in the bush...... so in 1905 they decided to move....they set out with the bullock team pulling the covered wagon. (They stayed the first night with friends in Colac) some of the family sleeping in the wagon - head to toe.......the next day tragedy struck. Their son Joseph was killed. He had been walking and decided to climb on the wagon to have a ride.

Grandpa Owen and his bullock team

He fell and the wheel of the wagon went over his body......the whole family went into a period of mourning and all wore black.”

Thank You Bendigo Bank The May event of the Forrest Historical Society was called Community Heroes in which they recalled people who had made a significant contribution to the Community in the last century, not forgetting our Living Legends of course. It was the first opportunity to use equipment donated to the Society by the Community Branch of Bendigo Bank, Apollo Bay. The very useful Epson Projector for both still and moving images was accompanied by a unique document scanner which projected any photo or print material placed under its camera, even someone drawing or writing. E-waste banned from your bin from July 1 Residents across Victoria will no longer be able to place E-waste in their kerbside collection bins from July 1 and Colac Otway Shire Council is urging the community to learn more about E-waste recycling. Council has been encouraging people to recycle small E-waste items such as mobile phones and batteries for a number of years through its collection point at Council’s Colac Customer Service Centre. However, the State Government ban on all electronic and electrical waste going to landfill, to be introduced on July 1, will force people to choose recycling options for all items with a cord or batteries rather than disposing of them in their kerbside bin. Council’s transfer stations at Apollo Bay, Birregurra and Alvie will accept and store E-waste and are working with other G21 Councils, Barwon South West Waste Resource Recovery Group (BSWWRRG) and Pony Up for Good for the E-waste processing.

E-waste items for disposal at Transfer Stations include televisions, computers, IT accessories, phones, irons, toasters and other household electrical and electronic items. In addition to Council’s e-waste collection station at Colac for mobile phones, household batteries, printer cartridges, CDs and DVDs, Council has also ordered a collection station for Apollo Bay, with more details and location to be announced soon. Visit Colac Otway’s website for more waste and recycling information www.colacotway.vic.gov.au/ My-property/Rubbish-recycling NOTE: Some of our community groups are leading the way and already offer recycling services. If you are unable to get your E-waste to Colac, you can drop it at The Forrest Neighbourhood House. Take your old computer equipment and printers to the Forrest Men’s Shed where it will be delivered to Computer Bank to be recycled or rebuilt and distributed to people in need at a discounted cost.

Community Activities Seeing the Forest for the Trees Studio Forrest celebrated a first semester full of creativity with the opening of the ‘Forest’ installation at the hall. The first six months of 2019 were devoted to the main theme of the year, ‘Forest ’ with workshops in Shifu (spinning from paper and then weaving), bark weaving, paper making, making silk paper and botanical art. The rest of the time the fifteen women in the group met in the Hall every Wednesday to create individual pieces and a collaborative piece where each person made a tree. I was skeptical at first how fifteen artists could fill a space with ‘artificial’ trees given that the real forest was right at our doorstep. Everyone worked assiduously on their tree and in the week before the exhibition the creative, reflective and collaborative efforts began to take shape. The trees had become the ‘metaphorical forest of the creative imagination’, each one with its own personality and unique quality, making the whole into a magical transformation - a forest of trees, highlighted with the inclusion of individual pieces! By 7pm on Friday June 7th (opening time) it was indeed a Wonderland, as the photos show. The exhibition ran over three days plus the Pauline Rostos opening evening.

The Forest Installation is on the road! You can view it at the Makers Space, 50 Queens St, Colac during July and at Red Rock Regional Theatre and Gallery in Cororooke during August.

Forrest Folk Serra

Serra is one of the latest new arrivals to our town and community. Serra has had many adventures and has travelled all over the world including spending long periods in Canada. She grew up in the Dandenongs and worked as a Vet before finding her passion and inner fire in the world of healing. Serra talks of healing as her ‘soul work’ and in the beautiful house at the top of Kent’s Road she offers Reiki, massage and sound healing as part of the journey with her clients to find a place of inner peace. Serra talks of the physical body and the energy body and believes that if you cure the energy body by releasing blockages, in turn you cure the physical. Many of Serra’s clients comment on the whole experience of travelling ‘away from the world’ to the serenity that is her healing room. Before she arrived, Serra lived in the Surf Coast and by chance she found a place in Forrest that was perfect for her. The community have warmly greeted her and she finds her healing and weekend work at the General Store a great way to meet people. Serra’s dream is to open a healing centre with other similarly minded people to bring a holistic approach to treatment. We are extremely lucky to have such a talented and beautiful person arrive in Forrest!

Silvereyes

to 3 broods in a good year, with the young feathered up within 10 days and fully independent in just 3 weeks.

Silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) are tiny birds around 12 cm long, named for the striking white, black-rimmed ring around their eyes. Feeding on small insects, nectar and fruit, they prefer bushy or well-treed habitats including gardens, weaving a cupped nest from spider web, moss and other fine materials among slender branches. Hatching two to four young at a time, they may raise up

Great travellers, they are found across eastern and southwestern Australia as well as some of the western Pacific islands, with a few colour variations across this great range. Southern populations flock towards the end of summer, and may migrate northwards, flying by night and feeding by day. Tasmanian Silvereyes regularly cross Bass Strait on their wanderings, an impressive feat for a bird that weighs just 10 grams. Small numbers crossed the Tasman Sea in 1832, followed by a larger flock in 1856, and Silvereyes are now widespread through New Zealand, regarded as a self-introduced native. Silvereyes eat great numbers of pests including aphids and scale insects, but also love soft fruit. Our main halfacre orchard is protected from parrots and bowerbirds by a canopy of chicken mesh, allowing smaller birds in for insect control, but we have to net cherries and grapes with 1 cm fruit-net to keep Silvereyes out. We have enough raspberries and other brambles to share with the birds, and in winter we leave surplus late-hanging apples to soften for Silvereyes and honeyeaters.
