CAVE CREEK – Jace Williams is a 15-year-old elite athlete from Cave Creek that’s taking enormous jumps towards his Olympic goals – literally. The sophomore at Cactus Shadows High School is a member of the U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling Team, competing worldwide in the National Junior Elite Trampoline and National Junior Elite Double Mini categories. This December Jace is traveling to Tokyo for his fourth World Age Group Competition (WAGC), which is the highest level of competition for trampoline athletes under

ANTHEM – Soon local residents will be able to shop for a cause at Anthem’s newest retail store, Rusty’s Resale Boutique. All proceeds from the boutique will go directly towards providing care for senior dogs at Rusty’s Angels Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization based out of New River that is dedicated to rescuing and caring for senior and special needs dogs. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from Rusty’s Resale will go directly to helping provide the daily care for our senior dogs,” Emilee Spear, the founder and director of Rusty’s Angels stated in an email to The Foothills Focus on September 23. “This store is also just another way that people can support us.”

Rusty’s Resale Boutique is inviting the community to its grand opening on Saturday, October 5, at 42407 N. Vision Way, Suite 107 beginning at 9 a.m. The store is a nonconsignment, volunteer-based thrift shop, selling clothing housewares, accessories, jewelry, home décor, artwork, books and more. “Anything we can’t sell, we will pay it forward to Big Brothers Big Sisters,” Spear said. “There are many ways you can support; by donating your new or gently used items, shopping at our store or volunteering your time.”

While Jace placed well at the 2017 WAGC in Russia, 16th out of 85 people in his age category, he is typically a top qualifier. So, this year he is working on a new routine and adding more points

Dining Out

Good food and good times at the Buffalo Chip in Cave Creek

BY KARA HYVARINEN LOCAL BLOGGER

CAVE CREEK – Grab your boots and 10-gallon hat for dinner, dancing and bull riding at the Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse in downtown Cave Creek. All joking aside, a certain dress code is not required to enjoy everything that the Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse has to offer. But it definitely adds to the overall fun and experience. Imagine wearing your favorite pair of cowboy boots while line dancing. Or putting on a borrowed cowboy hat that will fly off while trying to stay on the mechanical bull. With that said, come as you are and I’m sure you will have a great time. The story of the Buffalo Chip started back in 1951 as a feed and bait shop that was a stopping point on the way to Bartlett Lake. Now it’s an established dance hall, barbecue restaurant and bull riding arena. The Buffalo Chip was destroyed by an arson fire in 2015, and it took owner Larry Wendt no time at all to realize he wanted to rebuild. Today, the

restaurant is much larger than the original and is constructed of lumber that was reclaimed from an old California sawmill. No matter what day of the week you stop by, entertainment abounds. Lunch is served daily starting at 10 a.m. and the menu remains the same to closing, which is midnight Sunday through Tuesday, and 2:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. A few suggestions for those that can’t decide on what to eat. The Mexican Pizza to start off with, the Cowboy Cobb Salad for your second course,

the St. Louis Pork Spareribs for your main course and save room because you must order the Buffalo Chip Brownie Sundae for dessert. You won’t regret those ribs that are pit smoked for 10 hours, the blonde toffee chocolate chip brownie or the tractor churned ice cream. Yes, the ice cream is made in house and is tractor churned. Be sure and ask about it when you visit. If you want to see live bull riding, you can stop by Wednesday nights at 7:30 and 9 p.m., or on Friday at 8, 9:30 and 10:45 p.m. One thing that you won’t want to miss is “Mutton Bustin” from 8 to 8:30 on Friday nights. Children that are four to seven-years-old and less than 75 pounds are welcome to participate. What an unforgettable experience for your little cowpoke to ride a sheep in the Buffalo Chip arena. Also, a huge shout out to the Green Bay Packer fans. The Buffalo Chip shows each game and offers food and drink specials. Reservations are recommended to guarantee your spot.

The mechanical bull is just one of many entertaininment options availlable at the Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse.

Oh Hillary, how we worried about you. Yes, we can all breathe a sigh of relief, as Hillary, the stranded donkey who was marooned for three years on a tiny island, has now been successfully rescued. It took many caring neighbors to keep the lonely donkey alive. During the drought of 2016, Hillary and her herd of donkeys walked out into the middle of Lake McClure in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. But as the heavy rains came and increased the water level, Hillary, with her lame leg, got cut off from the rest of the herd. And there she was, alone on a little island of about one acre in the middle of the lake. A retired police chief first noticed her and starte bringing her bales of hay. Other boating neighbors pitched in and kept her supplied with apples and pellets.

The neighbors devised a plan to get Hillary off the island. But wait! The government and its red tape stepped in, and Hillary’s rescue went into the hands of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. That’s because it is unlawful to capture an undomesticated burro on federal land. Oh Hillary, if only you had been on private property! Your isolation might have ended much sooner. How many State officials does it take to rescue one little donkey? No fewer than 20 state wildlife biologists and veterinarians were involved in “Operation Save Hillary.” It took some intricate planning. And as life goes, plans do not always work out. A small pen was set up on the island and filled with wonderful, tasty treats like watermelon and pellets. Then the biologists took off in their boat, ready to shut the door to the pen by remote-control, once Hillary stepped inside. Did you know that geese love watermelon and free-roaming donkeys don’t like little pens? So, the timid Hillary stubbornly refused to be tempted and stood her ground, far away from the suspicious pen, while a flock of geese enjoyed the treats immensely.

Now there is a Plan B, which involves a tranquilizing dart, a gurney and several strong men. So, Hillary was chased on foot around her little island until a veterinarian could land a shot with the dart and Hillary plopped to the ground. Then the 600-pound beast had to be loaded onto a gurney, carried into a boat and taken to shore. She was then administered a drug to reverse the tranquilizer and Hillary soon stood up and looked around. Clearly, Hillary had to be shocked at the amount of attention she received. Neighbors and local fisherman who had lovingly cared for her were teary eyed when they saw the little burro being led into a horse trailer. And pulled away to a new life. She was taken to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in Texas where she is enjoying watermelons, hay and community with other burros. Some things take time. Everyone could have given up. But at the end of the day, we change the world one little donkey at a time. And as one first grader said, “Saving Hillary was worth it.” I agree. Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local realtor. The new court rules will amend the Rule 5(d) to require that landlords serve tenants with an additional copy of at least some of their lease and any relevant addendums to it, as well as an accounting of their rental payments for the last six months (sometimes called a tenant ledger). The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office named Dunn the winner with 88 percent of the vote on August 28. “As John F. Kennedy once said, ‘As we express our

gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.’ As the newly elected Pine District councilmember, it is my privilege to serve my city and community,” said Councilmember Dunn. Prior to becoming councilmember, Dunn worked in the business management, marketing and communications industries and served on the planning and zoning commission since fall 2018. In her time as interim

“A copy of the provisions of any lease agreement and any addendums related to the underlying basis of the eviction action must be served with the complaint.” and

“If the action is based on non-payment of rent, a copy of the accounting of charges and payments for the preceding six months must be served with the complaint.” The State Bar of Arizona requested these rule changes. The stated basis for doing so was that tenants often do not bring the required documents with

them when they meet with legal aid attorneys. There is no doubt that this could be a significant problem if the tenant does not have this information and if it would be material to the case. Any such problem is made more critical by the short time standards for residential eviction actions in Arizona. Some have expressed a concern that these additional requirements will make residential evictions more expensive. Some landlord attorneys may attach a copy of the entire lease because only attaching pages 1, 2, 15, and 25, for example, may be a practical impossibility. In

Maricopa County, nearly every case involves an allegation of nonpayment of rent, so the tenant ledger will need to be added to each of those cases. There have been some stories in the local media concerning the lack of affordable rental housing in Maricopa and in Pima Counties. Hopefully these new requirements, which are designed to help tenants, will not add to that problem. The new additional requirements will become effective on January 1, 2020. councilmember, she met with all city departments, held several community meetings and participated in council meetings. “My actions will be that of engagement and listening to the residents who entrusted me to represent them,” Dunn said. “The success of the Pine District and the entire city of Peoria depends on all of us working together to build an even better

community. I will work hard and am grateful to be able to do so, on your behalf.” Dunn interests are water conservation, public transportation, street maintenance and development along Peoria Avenue and Loop 101. For more information, visit www. peoriaaz.gov/council.

CAVE CREEK – Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) announced that Sonoran Trails Middle School’s eighth graders from Mrs. Petrine’s class of the 201819 school year won a 2019 Heritage Grant it submitted to the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD). The grant for the school’s “Schoolyard Wildlife Habitat” was approved by AZGFD in May 2019, receiving $9,844 toward the project. Sonoran Trails Middle School’s (STMS) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) also contributed $4,500 to the project, adding ocotillos to the space. The Heritage Fund Grant Program was established by the AZGFD in 1992 as part of the overall Heritage Fund program.

The Heritage Fund money comes from Arizona Lottery ticket sales and was established by voter initiative in 1990. Heritage funding goes toward conservation efforts such as protecting endangered species, educating students and the general public about wildlife and the outdoors, and creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation, according to AZGFD. The class that submitted the grant proposal are now freshman at Cactus Shadows High School. The former STMS students that submitted the grant proposal last October, and current STMS in SEED club are now planning where to place the

to his difficulty score, attempting to execute two, forward, triple flips. “I do one triple and nine doubles now, and I am trying to do two triples and eight doubles,” Jace said nonchalantly, while explaining that the extra triple flips will give him 7/10ths more points in his difficulty score. Although he has successfully executed triple flips successfully in practice, he has never done it in competition before. Jace says he is taking the risk because: “I knew I was down a couple points, so I knew I needed to make them up with some extra difficulty. I created a new routine that was harder with new skills and stuff.” The WAGC is essentially the precursor to the Olympics, and Jace along with his coaches and family were confident that he would be able to tryout in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

But recently the qualifying age was raised to 18, and unfortunately Jace will not be old enough by then. “So, I thought I would make 2020 but now I have to wait until 2024,” he said in a very accepting tone, but still obviously disappointed. If you ask the humble athlete, he will tell you he can’t jump that high, with his feet reaching a staggering height of about 18-feet. “A lot of kids he competes against are like 30 pounds heavier than him, so they can go higher and that is a disadvantage he has right now,” said Susan Williams, Jace’s mother. “Where he usually excels is with difficulty. That is us where he gets the most points because he always pushes himself to do the highest difficulty and execution.” Even though she knows her son has a natural talent, with Jace competing in traditional gymnastics and trampoline since he was seven-years old,

TheFoothillsFocus.com

The Foothills Focus Susan acknowledges how lucky they are to be training at North Valley Gymnastics. North Valley Gymnastics is where Jace met his coach Chelsea Rainer, who is also a USA National Team Coach for Trampoline Double Mini. She introduced Jace to tumbling and trampoline when he was seven, and he has been training with her since. “We’re lucky to have a phenomenal gym, and there are really only like two in the Valley that can accommodate competitive trampoline because of ceiling heights,” she said. Trampoline is not the only thing that Jace’s pushes himself to excel in. He attends honor classes at public high school, while balancing competitions and four-hour gym practices every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. “It’s pretty hard,” Jace said. “I pretty much go, school, homework, gym, homework and bed.” His biggest challenge is

missing school for competitions, and this school year he is slated to miss 14 days. Although the teachers at Cactus Shadows help Jace mitigate his absences as best they can, most athletes at Jace’s level are homeschooled to accommodate their hectic schedules. “He loves the social aspect of school and I don’t want him to miss out on that,” Susan said, adding that Jace wants to also pursue a career in engineering. The schedule isn’t the only hardship either. On average the Williams spend about $10,000 a year on training and competition costs for Jace, and he has no sponsors. “We get a small amount of funding from the state program and the regional program,” which totals to $1,000 Susan said. “It helps but it’s not a lot. The program is not huge

across the country and it has limited funding.” Susan explains that trampoline and tumbling is one of the hardest sports to get sponsorship for because the sport is not popular, and that even Olympians do not have many sponsor options. She has reached out locally in hopes of finding a sponsor through some of the businesses they are familiar with in Cave Creek, but so far, they have not heard much of anything back. “We would love it though!” Susan said, “Any amount to help out in the way of sponsors would be great, it would really help with traveling expenses.” In the meantime, Jace will continue soaring until he reaches the 2024 Summer Olympics. Jace has a page on SponsorMe. com for anyone interested in sponsorship opportunities.

Five things she can do as a Girl Scout (that you probably didn’t know)

BY AUTUMN JARRETT

What do you think of when you think of Girl Scouts? I bet it wasn’t taking a 200-mile bike ride, traveling to Japan or learning to fly a plane. The opportunities with Girl Scouts are truly endless, so the Girl Scouts – Arizona CactusPine Council (GSACPC) is showcasing some things you wouldn’t expect they are doing.

1.Bike Ride Not only can girls do recreational bike rides through the mountains of Arizona, but as Troop 7314, girls can take on the challenge of a 200-mile, eight-day bike ride. The girls of Troop 7314 participated in the Tour de Sih Hasin – a community bike ride founded by their troop leader Claudia Jackson to bring awareness to mental

health struggles within the Navajo Nation. The girls went from novice bikers to experts within a few months, learning how to ride, bike safety and bike maintenance. Many of the girls have seen the mental health struggles within their community first-hand and found great pride in taking on this massive undertaking to help the people of their home in the Navajo Nation. 2. Kayak in one of Arizona’s lakes Kayaking is cool and all, but has she ever gone on a three-day backpacking trip with her BFFs and gone kayaking through the canyon slots of Lake Powell at the same time? The Peaks and Paddles summer camp session at Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council’s (GSACPC) Shadow Rim Ranch offers exactly that.

They head up to a camp located in Payson, spending the first couple days preparing for this incredible backpacking trip. Then they take a trip to explore one of many lakes in Payson with Girl Scout sisters and set out for adventure on a three-day trip full of hiking, climbing and kayaking.

3. Travel - Girl Scouts love to travel From the field trips they take as Brownies to the global adventures they go on as teens. If she loves exploring different places and cultures, then Girl Scouts is the place for her.

Traveling with Girl Scouts offers an experience like no other – girls get to go on adventures with their troop and other Girl Scouts from across the country all while making lifelong friends along the way. Trips can be local like heading

up to the Grand Canyon or go a little further to San Diego, Space Camp in Alabama, and Girl Scout’s founder Juliette Gordon Low’s birthplace Savannah, Ga. As an older Girl Scout (11+ years old), she can take trips much further and

discover different cultures with Girl Scout sisters in places like Peru, Greece, Italy, Ethiopia and Japan. 4. Aviation program Has she ever thought of flying a plane? Only when she

becomes a pilot, right? Nope! At Girl Scouts, girls can take to the skies at our Discover Aviation summer camp session at Camp Willow Springs in Prescott. Let the Ninety-Nines: International Organization of Women Pilots take her through the steps of airplane maintenance, systems and aerodynamics then fly through the skies with a pilot and one of her best friends. At Girl Scouts, all her wildest dreams are possible – even flying! 5. Aspire academy Need an extra dose of adrenaline in life? When joining Girl Scouts, they can attend Aspire Academy – an intense adrenaline-pumping academy hosted by local female law enforcement and firefighters. Available to those with this career interest in mind, they can experience training like real paramedics, firefighters and detectives. Girls practice self-defense, firearm handling, CPR and even enter a fire rescue simulation in full gear. Last but not least, girls get to belay down the side of a building just like our local heroes do to keep our communities safe. For more information about GSACPC visit GirlsScoutsAZ.org.

Local wildlife painter, Kelly Mattes, would tell you, “I don’t paint what an animal looks like, and I paint what it feels like.” In Kelly’s animal portraits it is all is about the subject gazing back at you from the canvas. His goal is to, “Get the viewer to wonder what the animal is thinking. Is the glance over the left shoulder another animal, perhaps a chance for dinner, or a signal it’s time to respond to an intruder?” Growing up in the wilds of Marion, Wis., Kelly credits much of his creativity to his father, who instilled in him a love of the great outdoors and the creatures that call it home. That enthusiasm for the mystery and magic in natural settings has never left Kelly’s “top of the list, things to do.” Kelly’s interest in solar energy is what brought him to Arizona to pursue starting a solar company. His natural talent in all aspects of problem solving has served Kelly well, both in business and painting. “Painting presents a number of particular issues and requires concentration and analysis,” he said about his perspective of being a painter.

He is continually striving to move himself into more complex paintings in the area of temperature, value and edges. The result is a stunning likeness of his subjects within his impressionistic style of applying the paints. Fascinating textures, shadows, shades and colors pop out of the canvas with a noticeable energy. Kelly works from his home studio in New River and is a member of the Sonoran Arts League. He will be participating in the annual Hidden in the Hill Artist’s Studio Tour and Sale in November at Studio #39. (sonoranartsleague.org).

You won’t want to miss being in the presence of Kelly’s stunning gallery of acrylic, oil and watercolor natural images. Each one depicts a love of nature and a true understanding of his chosen subjects and mediums. Contact Kelly with questions, make an appointment to view his work or to commission a piece by emailing kellyrmattes@ gmail.com. Movie Review

BY MONTE YAZZIE FILM CRITIC

In the first few minutes of director James Gray’s deliberately paced, visually intriguing space exploration “Ad Astra,” the image of a person uncontrollably plummeting to earth is witnessed. The tumbling, somewhat lifeless, figure falling from the blue heavens towards the green earth seems poetic in a film that aims for insight over intensity; examining the journey of the exploration instead of the joy of reaching the destination. “Ad Astra” is an often quiet and utterly controlled film, one that is pulling influences from other methodically

structured films like “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and most often “Apocalypse Now.” The isolation from the world, the journey of self-discovery and the fear of the unknown are all themes explored in all these referenced films. “Ad Astra” has all these concepts and it’s clearly apparent from the opening minutes, sometimes even using a voice-over narrative to make these ideas extra focused. The narrative mission is simple, an astronaut has gone rogue and his exploits are threatening life on earth. His son, a famous space scientist named Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), is tasked with

AD ASTRA

Perfect for Garages and Hot Rooms!

Add the beautifully composed photography with striking color bursts and intriguing geographic angles, and the film is a complete pleasure to look at. Director James Gray has a distinct quality that can be felt in the design elements, but the narrative for “Ad Astra” depends heavily on actor Brad Pitt. He is fantastic at progressing the scenes from one moment

to another. Pitt also does an interesting job of composing his journey of self-discovery. The subtle emotional touches seen with his mannerisms during the crumbling connection with his wife (Liv Tyler), and the calm demeanor displayed during tense scenes help display the focus of the character, who is in search of answers outside the normal. But it is solely Pitt doing the heavy lifting throughout the film as many of the other actors in the film are crafted with minimal depth, sometimes no depth at all. Even with great performances and some fantastic designs, the narrative for “Ad Astra” struggles consistently throughout the film in connecting its themes of loss, fear, abandonment and isolation in more meaningful ways. Instead the film turns into a bland story about fathers and sons. And while it searches for more meaning, it begins to meander aimlessly. This severely affects the pacing of the film which starts with promise but very quickly slows to a crawl. Scenes begin to feel overly drawn out. What is most disappointing is the investment in Roy McBride and his journey to find his father dwindles, and ultimately is lost by the time the final act arrives. “Ad Astra” is a beautiful film to look at with an exceptional performance from Brad Pitt. Unfortunately, the promising theme of self-discovery becomes like it’s primary character, lost in its own search into the unknown.

Leaving Your Job, what Happens to Your 401(k)? •

PROVIDED BY: SARAH FINELLI

ANTHEM – If you’re in the early stages of your working life – or even in the not-so-early ones – the chances are pretty good that you will change jobs at some point. When that happens, you’ll probably leave a few things behind – but will one of them be your 401(k)? Of course, you wouldn’t really forget about your 401(k). (It does happen, however – over the period from 2004 through 2013, more than 25 million people left at least one 401(k) or similar plan behind when they left their job, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.) But you will have to do something with your account. Essentially, you have four choices: •

You can cash out your 401(k). It’s your money, but if you take it out before you reach 59 ½, you will owe federal income taxes, plus any applicable state and local taxes.

Also, you will likely be charged a 10% penalty for early withdrawal. Perhaps even more important, if you liquidate your 401(k) when you change jobs, you’ll be reducing the amount you’ll have left for retirement. You can leave your 401(k) with your old employer. If your former employer permits it, you can leave your 401(k) intact, even after you move to a different job. This might be appealing to you if you like the investment choices in your account, but you won’t be able to make any new contributions. Plus, you won’t face any immediate tax consequences.

You can move the money to your new employer’s 401(k). You can consolidate your old 401(k) with one offered by your new employer, if allowed. You won’t take a tax hit, and you might like your new plan’s investment options. And you may find it easier to manage your funds if they’re all held in one place. You can roll your 401(k) into an IRA. You don’t need the permission from any employer – old or new – to move your old 401(k) to an IRA. Your money will continue to grow on a taxdeferred basis, and an IRA offers you a virtually unlimited array of investment options – stocks, bonds, mutual funds and so on. You can make either a direct or indirect rollover.

With a direct rollover, the administrator of your old 401(k) sends your money directly to the financial provider that holds your rollover IRA. No tax is withheld because you never actually take possession of the money. With an indirect rollover, you’re technically withdrawing the money and moving it to the IRA provider yourself. (You’ve got 60 days to make this transfer.) You will face a withholding of 20% of your account’s assets, but you may be able to recover most of this amount when you file your tax return. Still, for the sake of ease of movement and avoidance of all tax issues, a direct rollover may be more advantageous. Which of these options is right for you? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone. You’ll have to consider several factors, and you’ll certainly want to consult your tax professional before making any decision. But in any case, do whatever you can to preserve – and hopefully grow – your 401(k) assets. You’ll need these resources to help fund the retirement lifestyle you want and deserve. (B) All bidders must sign an affidavit stating that they have undertaken due diligence in preparation for the auction and that their representative is authorized to bid and bind the bidder. It is the bidder’s responsibility to research the records of local jurisdictions and public agencies regarding this property. (C) Pursuant to A.R.S. §37-240(B), the successful bidder must be authorized to transact business in the state of Arizona no later than ten (10) business days after the auction. The successful bidder must sign an affidavit stating it is the successful bidder and sign a Certification Statement pursuant to A.R.S. Title 37 and the Rules of ASLD. (D) If the successful bidder fails to complete the payment as stated in the auction notice together with the additional required fees within 30 days from the auction date, all amounts paid at the time of auction by the successful bidder will be forfeited. (E) In the event of forfeiture, the ASLD Commissioner may declare that the bid placed before the final bid accepted is the highest bid, and that the bidder has five (5) days after notification by ASLD to pay by cashier’s check all amounts due. GENERAL INFORMATION: The ASLD may cancel this auction in whole or in part at any time prior to the acceptance of a final bid. A protest to this sale must be filed within 30 days after the first day of publication of this announcement and in accordance with A.R.S. §37-301. Persons with a disability may request a reasonable accommodation such as a sign language interpreter, by contacting the ADA Coordinator, at (602) 542-2629. trees and shrubs. The students included the following plants for the habitat: Desert ironwood; Mesquite; Blue Palo Verde; Desert Willow Trees (about 5 of each); Baja fairy duster, Ocotillo; San Marcos Hibiscus; and Purple Sage Shrubs (about 5 of each). “It is amazing when you give control over to students and ask them to solve an authentic problem, the wonderful solutions they can produce. We look forward to working with Arizona Game and Fish to complete their grant, Principal, Bill Dolezal said. Last year students in Mrs. Petrine’s

page 17

class created and presented plans for creating a habitat that would enhance the campus and attract wildlife. Then they voted for the best presentation of their class that stood out among all of Mrs. Petrine’s classes. The ideas from the winning presentation were incorporated into the grant that was submitted in October 2018. “Our students are amazing problemsolvers as evidenced by this thoughtful school beautification project. Now we can all enjoy their efforts on the STMS campus, Superintendent Burdick said. Sonoran Trails Middle School is an A+ School of Excellence requiring their students to study Chinese, French or Spanish as a core class.
