ith every new year, a new breath of life flows into our very being. It is as if at the stike of midnight, a New Year's Kiss, a toast, or a warm embrace awakens a part of us all that allows a fresh start. Though 2015 has started with (unwelcome) below-freezing temperatures, we hope with our spark of creativity that we can warm you up to the overhaul of Alexander Hamilton's chapter newsletter - now transformed to a magazine sophistiquĂŠ. It is our great pleasure that we present to you this magazine, along with our personal New Year's Resolutions, a resolution to run steadily alongside the great magazines one can pick up at the newsstand As with each issue we have produced, there is just not enough space for the immense material. We consider ourselves tremendously lucky. With that said, this issue offers each a microscope into the events and inner workings of Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54. Without the efforts and dedication of its members, the chapter could not survive. We want to take this time to tell each 174 of them that we appreciate their membership, their firm 2015

commitment, and their impressive results, especially with the Fifth Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner and Fourth Annual Cigar Night. These things have not changed, and we hope they never do. What has changed, however, is our presentation of such members that we believe to exemplify most or all of AHEPA's core values. When considering whom to showcase, the Siderias, Koutsouris, and Higgins family was our only viable option. They were too perfect for them to turn the idea down, so thankfully, they agreed. We would like to take this time to formally thank each and every one of them profusely for allowing us to shed a glimmer of light on their most recent philanthropic contributions. We could not be happier with an inaugural feature than to have this family showcased in our magazine, and hope that they can inspire you as much as and - if we have done our job correctly - even more so than they inspire us and that this magazine will only be the beginning of a very bright 2015.

Dear Eleni, Just dropping you a note to commend you and your father on the fantastic, colorful, and interesting job you did on the Special Edition "Fighting 54" Magazine. Enjoyed it tremendously. Especially your commentary in Greek. Wishing you continued success. EVELYN VARDAKIS JERSEY CITY, NJ IKARIOS CHAPTER #48

I was amazed at this Chapter Publication from the Alexander Hamilton 54 AHEPA Chapter, Paramus, NJ. I was impressed with the amount of research, articles and information presented for a ...Chapter Publication. There is a little AHEPA history, information of their members, District and National Projects and Programs. But throughout this magazine, Love and the Spirit of AHEPA comes through. Every objective of AHEPA is present, whether Education, Philanthropy, Hellenism, or Individual and Family Excellence. A little lengthy. Some articles are in Greek, and there are many, many photographs. Definitely a work of love. Very, very good. KOSTAS GUS HAZIFOTIS ATLANTA, GA 54

Michael passed peacefully on October 6, 2013 of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. A Professional Engineer and expert on the NYC building code, Michael presided over the family's restaurant contracting business, expanding it into restaurant ownership, notably Axia Taverna. A man of boundless charity, he was a leader in his own community and a bridge to other communities. Michael was honored, like his father, as an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, celebrating immigrant achievement, and was a member of Leadership 100, stewards of the Greek Orthodox Church. Michael served for years as trustee and benefactor of the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian in Tenafly, NJ and was a beloved and active member of our chapter.

Nicholas entered into eternal rest on August 26, 2014 after having lived in Clifton, NJ for many years. He was born in Paterson, NJ on November 14, 1921 and proudly served his country during World War II in the Air Force as a Right Blister Gunner on the B-29 Super Fortress. Having survived thirty-five missions over Japan, he also witnessed the Enola Gay taking off from the Island of Tinian. For thirty-six years, Mr. Constandelis was the owner of Teddy's Lunch located on Market Street in Paterson. He was a member of the St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church where he served as President of the community, and he was also a past president of our chapter. Under his presidency, he started the Cancer Research Canister Program. In his latter years, he penned a book entitled, 8000 Feet Over Hell, chronicling his missions during the war.

John passed away on February 21, 2013 after having lived in Elmwood Park, NJ. Born and raised in Paterson, he resided in Clifton before moving to Elmwood Park twenty-five years ago. He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1949, Mr. Vasios cofounded Hy-way Tire Company in Elmwood Park, which he owned and operated until 1979. Later, he served as a consultant with Englewood tire Distributors. He was a member and past President of Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54, and he will be sorely missed.

Constantine passed away on July 21, 2014. He was born in Pompton Lakes but lived in Rutherford before moving to Clifton fifty-five years ago. He was an engineer for ITT, Nutley, before retiring. Also, he was a parishioner of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, a member of the Deriter Club, both in Clifton, and a member of Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54 in Paramus. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Constantine was a member of Allwood Post 6487 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Clifton, as well. During his membership in AHEPA, he served on the Board of Trustees for the 5th District Cancer Foundation, as Past President of Chapter #54, and as Chairman of the Canister Program for Alexander Hamilton for many years 2015

Takis J. Langas of Ringwood, NJ passed away on March 19, 2014 after a battle of complications due to a heart and kidney problem. Though he was born in Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, he was raised in Greece. Upon his return to America, Takis resided in many towns before settling in Ringwood. He earned his degree in architecture, was a faithful member and architect of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus, and was very involved within the community for over fifty years. Takis also served two terms as Past President of our chapter and was a long-standing member of AHEPA, having also donated money to what is our top scholarship award for rising freshmen in college in memory of his late son, Sotirios Langas, The Sotos Langas Memorial Scholarship Award. He is missed by his family and friends.

Savas Veros, of Pine Bush NY, formerly of Clifton NJ, was born on December 18, 1921 in Norwich, CT. He died peacefully in St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY on June 9, 2014 at age 92, always very proud to show off that he still had lots of brown hair. Savas started work at the age of sixteen for Babaco Alarm Systems and played a key role in their purchasing and design efforts for 49 years until he retired at age 65. After his retirement, Savas was called back to work as a consultant by Babaco well into his late eighties. he served in the US Army as a private and then a Sergeant in WWII. He was a member of the 117th Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, Company C. He fought in four major European battles and loved to reminisce about his wartime experiences. Savas was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and two Presidential Unit Citations. Savas served for many years on the Board of Directors at St. Athanasios Church and was a member and Past President of our chapter. He loved fishing, boating and golf. He also enjoyed the casinos in Atlantic City and was the ultimate putteraround-the house, electrician, and tomato gardener. Nicholas was born on the island of Andros in Greece and arrived to America in the early fifties upon completing his service in the Greek army. Coming to Paterson, New Jersey, he became a part-owner with his first boss, Alex Paschalis, owning and operating The Olympic Grille and Andros Diner. Nick remained there until his retirement, forty years later. By that time he had moved from Paterson to Franklin Lakes. He was also a fifty-year member of AHEPA in Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54, served many years on the Board of Trustees of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus, NJ, and enjoyed gardening. In large part because of Nick Astras and his late wife Stella, Alexander Hamilton was able to have a successful scholarship award that many students have been honored to receive, the John Astras Memorial Scholarship Award, in memory of his late son. He passed on October 6, 2013. May his memory be eternal.

Nick of Fair Lawn, NJ passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Paterson, he resided in Fair Lawn for the last 46 years. Nick was a parishioner, founding member, and Parish Council President of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus. Nick belonged to the Boiling Springs Masonic Lodge 152 in Rutherford and was a life member of our chapter. Nick loved his trips to Aruba and spending time with his family Prior to retiring in 1991, Nick was the owner and operator of The Rutherford House Restaurant for 35 years. 54

On Sunday, November 9, 2014 at The Venetian in Garfield, New Jersey The P.G.E.I. of America Charitable Foundation. Inc. honored one of our chapter members, George D. Siamboulis. The event was full of celebrations as the event was Pan Gregorian's annual Charity Gala, this year having celebrated their thirtieth anniversary. George Siamboulis has been an active member in Pan Gregorian Enterprises, Inc. and has served in various capacities - currently as Assistant Treasurer - since the beginning of his affiliation, in 1983. In 1991, he was elected as a member of the Board of Directors and served as 1st Vice President prior to his successful election to become President. Since 1998, Brother George has served as President of Pan Gregorian Enterprises, Inc. and as President of Pan Gregorian of America since its inception in 2009. The event was a beautiful celebration of a well-respected and endearing man, and we are honored to call him our Brother!

On Sunday, June 1, 2014 Dr. John Kallis, DMD was honored at the Chabad Jewish Center in Basking Ridge, NJ, a center promoting the philosophy and movement of conscious, value-based living to maximize a meaningful life experience, as per their event program. On that evening, Dr. Kallis and his wife, Dr. Patricia Marrone, were both honorees at The Annual Event, which honors the "Chabad community, its programs and schools, and the generous people who empower [them] to make a difference." Though both are in the field of dentistry, their contributions to the community, namely traveling to South America with Healing the Children Northeast on numerous occassions, where they treated 250 children in Peru suffering from dental anomalies, purchasing local ads to support anti-drug organizations (such as DARE), supporting local officials and donating money to Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54, to name a few. We are so proud to call him our Brother and wish him and Patricia continued success!

WASHINGTON, DC - A shipping container filled with $650,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment arrived Oct. 14, 2014, in Ioannina, Greece, thanks to the efforts of the AHEPA, which donated $20,000 to secure the shipping container and to the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), which worked diligently to coordinate the assembly of the medical supplies, announced Supreme President Phillip T. Frangos. This is the seventh shipment of medical supplies AHEPA helped to deliver to Greece working in cooperation with IOCC. The medical supplies range from syringes and walkers to catheters and nebulizers. All told, $4.55 million in medical supplies have been donated and delivered to hospitals throughout Greece through this collaborative effort, Frangos said. Each Thanksgiving Alexander Hamilton makes a donation of 2,000-pounds worth of turkeys to "Buddies of NJ" HIV/AIDS Resource Center, spearheaded by current Chapter President Christopher Morgan.

On behalf of the AHEPA FIFTH DISTRICT Cancer Foundation I wish to thank each and every one of you for your collective efforts in providing yet another donation to the foundation this past year. The $5,000 you raised through cancer canister collections yet again this year has been instrumental in helping our district reach its goals. Almost $900,000 has been given out by the cancer foundation for cancer research over 25 years. Very simply, Alexander Hamilton has played an integral role over the years topping $111,000 in donations - and your Chapter is to be commended for the greatest support a chapter has given. Your efforts in raising money, by the quarter, by the nickel and by the penny has been an inspiration to all. Again, we look forward to another 25 years of support for our cancer foundation with Paramus leading the way! Fraternally, GEORGE G. HORIATES CHAIR 54

ne of the missions of the Order of AHEPA is to promote education, an ongoing dedication that tops $1 billion in scholarships at the national, district, and local levels of the organization. Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54 is an AHEPA chapter at the local level that, without a doubt, is the nonpareil in educational scholarships, this year donating a total of $9,000 to 32 students, a few from outside our chapter's direct connection. On August 20, 2014 the Alexander Hamilton chapter hosted its 5th Annual Awards & Scholarship Dinner at Graycliff Fine Catering in Moonachie, NJ. The occasion was well-attended with parents and friends proudly celebrating the honorees' achievements. Those who were recognized for their scholastic efforts were from a diverse selection of top students: three participated in the 2013 Hellenic History Tournament, seven graduated from 9th grade from Ascension Greek Orthodox Church in Fairview, four from 8th grade from St. Athanasios in Paramus, seven from 8th grade from St. George in Clifton, and eleven from high schools across the state. The chapter opened the event with both the American and Greek national anthems sung by Angela Spirou, who then presented some inspiring words to the recent graduates, which you can read on page 16. The chapter also had the honor of having District #5 Governor, Stanley Gerondelis, and President of Nyack Chapter #455, Brother George Hanos, offer words of wisdom and encouragement to the graduates. Chapter President, Chris Morgan, who donated his own money to the Greek school scholarships

2015

and the scholarships for the Hellenic History Tournament, added his own uplifting remarks with Scholarship Chairman Brother Louis Arvanitis, PSG, following suit. As with every year, Alexander Hamilton awards four high school graduates with the highest honors. This year, Janine Bogris was granted the Sotos Langas Memorial Scholarship Award, the top award. Kristiana Marcopoulos received the second award, the John Astras Memorial Scholarship Award. Despina Arvanitis was endowed with the third, the John G. Thevos Memorial Scholarship Award, which has been in existence since last year. Finally, Michael Kontolios, was presented with the fourth top award, the George Stathakis Memorial Scholarship Award, which has also been awarded since last year. What was different this year from others was the scholarship application form, which requested a short essay from the applicants on the topic of how they promote or maintain AHEPA's ideals: Hellenism, Philanthropy, Family and Individual Excellence, and/or Civic Responsibility. There were some fantastic responses, notably from Michael Kontolios, who proudly wrote, "I am not even sure how to describe how I promote my Hellenism every day because it comes as involuntary to me as breathing does." Emily Papamarkos' heartfelt remarks about her family also moved us when she wrote, "My family has been my rock and has raised me to be the young lady I inspired to be. Without them I would not have made it where I am today." Ross Halkias also covered many core AHEPA values in his response with his statements remarking on his

54

hardworking attitude and kind-hearted demeanor, allowing him to love to help anyone in need. The event concluded with the benediction from Father Christos L. Pappas, Protopresbyter, who lastly bestowed on the scholarship recipients his own words of encouragement for the future, adding that the students and parents alike be wary of the world in which we live. It was a wonderful night, and we are all overwhelmingly proud of our youth. We look forward to celebrating the upcoming graduates at our chapter's 90th Anniversary and Scholarship Dinner Event on Wednesday, June 3, 2015! -ELENI ARVANITIS

ood evening. First, I would like to congratulate all of the graduates present here tonight. It is truly an honor to be asked to speak to you on all your future educational endeavors and to be part of such a momentous occasion in your lives. When I was asked by Mr. Arvanitis to make this speech, I immediately asked my mother whether or not I should do it. She responded, "Why not? Just make sure you're honest." That got me thinking. I have come to the decision that instead of sharing some of the amazing experiences I have had throughout my years at school, I would share with you something greater: my ten core lessons that I have learned as a student and as a growing adult. Change is beautiful, exciting, and one-hundred percent natural. The only time change becomes difficult is when you fight it. Open your sails to the changing winds, and you will go on adventures to which you never imagined. Asking for help is not weakness. It takes immense courage to acknowledge one's limitations and to use another's guidance in order to surpass those limits. "Those who cannot do, teach" is one of the most false statements. Your future professors have such a passion for their field that they have a career in extending that knowledge to you. Take advantage of it. Do not raise intellectual barriers. Be curious and never stop asking questions. Those who stay within their educational niche may become masters of a specific study but end up becoming crippled in other areas. All knowledge is beneficial. Balance is everything. It takes time, but you will learn that the key to true success is to be academically proficient, socially open to experiences, and true to one's self and ideals. The first two, the academic and

2015

social aspects of life, are usually the easiest ones to attain. In order to be truly balanced, you must take the time to be silent. Listen to your inner thoughts and communicate with yourself. Stay connected with family and friends from home. As young adults, we all crave to experience freedom, but it does not exist without a home base. If you disconnect completely, you will become a wanderer and find that within your "freedom," you have become lost. You will all find yourselves continuously saying, "I should have listened to my parents." Their invaluable wisdom is usually ignored. Remember, your parents will understand what you are experiencing - as long as you let them in and explain. Do not take the yelling personally. Anger from your parents quite often masks the great fear they feel when they know they cannot always protect you. There is no greater love and support than that which you will receive from your parents. Be humble in your successes, but truly celebrate your failures. Failures show you that you had the courage to try something unknown, something new, and something entirely out of your comfort zone. Respect them, for they will teach you the greatest lessons in life. You are the only one capable of defining your self-worth. No one else has that power. Remember, if you do not stand up for your standards, then you do not have any. If plan A does not work out - relax. There are twenty-five other letters in the alphabet to try out. Congratulations Graduates! May your future experiences guide you in becoming the adults that you have always dreamed. Thank you.

I

t's late afternoon at The Suburban Diner as we sit with George S. Siderias, a member of the very generous and philanthropic family many of us around the community have had the privilege of knowing. If anyone knows these people, he or she is aware that this family does not boast or gloat, it simply does. Gathering them all, though a mostly successful challenge, was difficult because of their inherent nature to spread a little wealth without expecting anything in return. The world only dreams for these kinds of people. It is extremely rare to see people who want to add to the benefit of the community, no matter the stature in which they can provide that benefit, without a bone in their body that wants to show it off to everyone else. Alas, there we were (only after much persuasion), able to conduct an 2015

interview that went more like a conversation than any formality. "A very strong point that I would like to make is that it's not really us that did anything," says George. "It's not me, it's not my father or my uncles. It's the community. I really want to make that very clear. The only thing I did is [to have] an idea." Those ideas were two successful fundraising events the family hosted. The first was led by his cousin, George M. Siderias, where ten percent of the profits from a day at The Suburban Diner in Paramus, New Jersey were donated to the American Cancer Society after George's father, Steve Siderias, and uncles agreed upon it. George M. was in the vanguard of that particular event as a result of his involvement with the American Cancer Society. He has served as chairman for various events and

tries to help in any capacity he can. Of course, after George M. was diagnosed ten years ago with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer that originates from white blood cells called lymphocytes, it was only natural that George M. become involved with the Society. Thankfully, he fought and beat the cancer and has become proactive in trying to help those currently diagnosed with all types of cancer. So, of course after a front-row seat to the effects of cancer, it comes as no surprise that an online article from the local newspaper would spark great empathy from George Siderias late last year. "I read [the] article... about a boy in town who was sick, and it just really hit home for us. We decided we wanted to do something. At that point, we weren't sure what, but we wanted to help in some way," comments George. That desire was realized 54

as the second most recent fundraiser from the Siderias family, "Goin' Gold for Luke," which took place on October 10 and 11, 2014. It had a similar setup to the fundraiser George M. had implemented with the first one, that being that ten percent of the sales - this time at The River Edge Diner in River Edge, New Jersey - were raised for the young boy, Luke Abbadessa, who at a meager 20-months old had been diagnosed with Stage Four Neuroblastoma, "a very tough" type of cancer. However, this fundraiser had one other aspect as well, with George's aunt, Laura Koutsouris, requesting from each family member that boxes remain at all four of the family's food establishments. The entire family was in favor of the fundraiser for Luke, so these boxes have been collected "very frequently" as they are filled up. But George makes strong remarks that the community was the driving force behind this cause. "Everyone in the community really came together," he says, allowing him to experience something quite humbling, when "in such a dark time... you [can] see the way a community can come together and what they can accomplish." He explains that none of this would have been possible without the community. Luckily, the fundraiser has brought about more good than even that. When Luke's parents, Vanessa and Daniel Abbadessa received news that their younger 54

son had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, they had to pause their teaching careers in order to take care of and send Luke to Sloan Kettering for his chemotherapy treatments. Though their insurance was good, it was not enough to cover all of their expenses both regarding and completely disconnected from Luke's expenses, especially their

mortgage, day-to-day bills, and necessities for their other child, an elder son. Travel alone cost them approximately "seven hundred dollars a week" to go to New York City for Luke's therapy. Though not certain on a number, George's and the community's efforts were able to culminate in a highly successful event with the donated money given directly to the Abbadessas. Now, just over two years old, Luke is in a much better condition than four months ago. Although he had to undergo "three or four rounds" of chemotherapy, with the last round at "double the amount in strength than regular chemo treatments," Luke had surgery just before Christmas to remove a tumor. At the time that this article will have been published, Luke could very well be cancer-free

with a final round of chemotherapy to ensure he will never face cancer again. George tells us, "The kid is a fighter, and he comes from a wonderful family. They are beautiful, beautiful people." When asked if George's family would be willing to support a cause if a similar situation were to arise, his response comes without any hesitation: "Without a doubt. Our family strongly believes that we are blessed, we have our health, and it's very important to do what we can to help others." Let's all hope that one day cancer is regarded as something as severe as the common cold. Let's be thankful that there are beautiful, beautiful people like the Abbadessas, who ask for help and make us aware in their time of need. Let's be humbled and inspired by beautiful, beautiful people like the Siderias family, who come up with wholehearted and fantastic ideas. If you would also like to contribute to Luke's cause, his mother's best friend, Laura Derwin, has set up her own fundraiser on GoFundMe. To make any donations or send words of encouragement visit gofundme.com/e5ca2o. Members of George's family who participated in and supported the fundraisers and are not explicitly mentioned in this article are Mike Siderias, Niko Koutsouris (both photographed on page 4), and Thomas Higgins. 2015

or the second time, Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54 sponsored a three-person team for the Hellenic History Tournament. The three students, who also consisted of the team for 2013, were Sofia Kontolios, Dimitris Baltzis, and Georgios Vardakis. They participated at the 6th Annual Hellenic History Tournament in Orange, Connecticut, sponsored by AHEPA Yankee District 7 and organized by a hard-working AHEPAn, Brother Nickolas Nikas, PSG. Alexander Hamilton sent a number of delegates to support the team including our Chapter Secretary Stelios Socratous (who selected the participants these past two years on behalf of our chapter), Dr. Vasilios Baltzis, Christos Vardakis, and Louis Arvanitis, PSG along with Mrs. Effie Kontolios and Mrs. Dimitra Baltzis. All of our attendees and the rest of our chapter is overjoyed and extremely proud with the abilities of these young candidates. Last year they won third place in the tournament, but this year they surpassed their own record with taking second place this time around - a $1500 prize. More than 200 people attended with local and out-of-state guests, including several Supreme and Grand Officers. We look forward to this single-elimination tournament to continue, and we would like to thank District 7 for the pleasant afternoon and their hospitality. Job well done!

hree chapters, Alexander Hamilton Chapter #54, Bergen Knights Chapter #285, and Wyckoff Chapter #453, have been able to come together at the Hackensack County Building for many years for the annual flag raising ceremony commemorating Greek Independence Day. Each time, all the Freeholders and other notable politicians are present, such as this year's keynote speaker, former County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan (R). Kathleen has always been a constant supporter to our Greek-American community. Above to the left, one can see her presenting a proclamation to the representatives of the AHEPA chapters that participated. We thank her and her staff for helping us to put together last year's event, and we look forward to celebrating our 193rd Year of Independence this March with a combined effort from the above chapters! 2015

fter trying three years in a row with a weak attendance each year, our 4th Annual Cigar Night was finally the huge success we had been anticipating and yearning for all this time. Alexander Hamilton was able to fill up the large banquet room at The Graycliff in Moonachie, New Jersey with a warm and joyous atmosphere on October 22, 2014. Our hosts so generously served us a scrumptious buffet and complete Viennese table and delectable cocktails. We had many valuable raffle items and a live silent auction - over thirty items overall occupying the perimeter of the room. Of course, the excuse for the event, we enjoyed premium cigars that made us all experience a strong high so much so that the exceptional profits we earned made us believe the cigars were as sweet as sugar. The profits from this past October are what enable us to continue our efforts for charitable causes and fundraising for educational scholarships for our youth's future. However, it is always welcomed and appreciated like this past October when being recognized for a good time. We asked our audience if they would come back next year, and they unanimously agreed. Keep your calendars clear, October 14, 2015 will be our Fifth Annual Cigar Night. Luckily for us, our charm works past the third time. See you in October!

nce again, we had our Famous Makaronada Dinner with Lamb. This time, the feast was for a large group of our newly initiated brothers. We celebrated at The Graycliff Fine Catering with great hospitality from our Brother Tony Papamarkos, who always opens up his arms to please us. Over 55 brothers old and new and guests attended our initiation event to enjoy the meeting, the food, and the fellowship. It was a remarkable way to end the year as our membership grew to 174 members for 2014. We thank all our brothers who attended, especially our good Brother and Past Supreme Governor, John Mehos from Jersey City Hudson Chapter #108. Brother John is always a welcome brother AHEPAn as he never seems to fail to entertain us with his wonderful singing abilities! Brother John was not the only member from Hudson Chapter #108 to join us, though. We were also lucky to have Supreme Secretary, Brother Andrew Zachariades. We thank him as well and wish him kai se anotera! hristmas is always merrier when there are more people with which to celebrate. So, we must take this moment to thank Brother Stavros Antonakakis, a past President of the 2015

Greek-American Chamber of Commerce, for having the idea to host a combined Christmas party. Those who partook in the festivities were the Greek American Chamber of Commerce, the Greek American Attorney Association, the Health Professionals, and our chapter. We all enjoyed the Christmas spirit, the food and dancing. Alexander Hamilton also hopes that all organizations can become members of each that particiapated. At our annual Christmas party we were fortunate to celebrate many milestones as well with many members receiving their pins: Anthony Emmanouilidis (25); Michael Doumas and George Thomas (30); Chris Haramis, Christopher Morgan, and George Petrakakis (35); Basil Alexoudis, Thomas Kourgelis, Louis Arvanitis, Louis Demison, Robert Soumas, and Stephen Kedes (40); John Pangis (45); and George Alexiades, John Foukas, Jack Papageorgis, and John Tsigounis (50). We certainly hope to continue this newfound tradition and thank the newly-elected Chamber President of the North, Paul Adams, Damon Kamvosoulis from the Attorneys, and Christina Andoniou from the Health Professionals. We also thank Music by Stavros for his fine entertainment. Next Christmas we are hoping others will join us for this fine occasion! 54

What is your vision for the future of our school now that our parish bought the surrounding land to expand its facilities? I suggest that our community build a modern school building to house a full primary school every Monday and Wednesday afternoon (grades preschool through 6th) and all grades of high school every Tuesday and Thursday (grades 7th through 12th). This would be the first community in America which would have a full afternoon Greek school system like this. The same building would also act as Charter Elementary School in the morning. The rent we would receive from the Charter School would be significant and all of the staff would be paid by the federal government. It is a bold educational program, but I believe it is doable with the right planning and the right people in the trenches! Let us work together to implement such a groundbreaking vision. When I began ninth grade at St. Demetrios in Astoria, I was able to be part of their program because it was someone's vision to have the first Greek Lyceum in the United States. And it has now become distinguished! I will selflessly offer my educational experience for the realization of such a vision! Please join me in enthusiasm and hope for the advancement of our Greek School for the benefit of our children! -Demosthenes Triantafillou, Principal From "The Progress and the Future Vision 2015
