GET YOUR TEETH FIXED

AT KREATIV DENTAL IN BUDAPEST AND

SAVE £1000S

In 2013 the dental tourism industry is predicted to continue to grow with more and more people traveling to the stunning city of Budapest in Hungary to have their teeth fixed. In 2012 the Treatment Abroad Medical Tourism Survey revealed that 20,000 people from the UK travelled overseas for dental treatment. Budapest has long been established as the most popular dental destination in Europe because of the high standards of dental care, the rigorous training and education of Hungarian

dentists, and the huge savings on offer to UK patients. It’s just a 2 hour flight from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or Heathrow, with flights available daily for as little as £60 return. Kreativ Dental Clinic is the most advanced dental clinic in Hungary, dedicated to providing its patients with the highest quality of care at prices that are on average 50% to 70% cheaper than in the UK. The Kreativ Dental Team are specialists in Dental Implants, Artificial Bone Replacement, Sinus Lifting, Porcelain Crowns, Bridgework, Veneers, Root Canal Treatment and Periodontal Surgery. UK aftercare is provided for all patients and their guarantee is the strongest available in Budapest.

The 50+ Show Magazine

Being the son of a late-50s model & a singer/pianist father, with family members in films with Richard Burton, Peter Sellers, Michael Caine & David Niven – & the stunt director of epic film ‘Zulu’ also in the family – meant a career in entertainment was a strong possibility for London born jazz singer, lyricist/songwriter, Kevin Fitzsimmons, who first discovered ‘the American songbook’ at the age of five, singing Pennies From Heaven accompanied by his father whose constant renditions of Gershwin, Porter and Berlin were to leave an irreversible impression. Kevin has sung everywhere from tiny well-worn jazz clubs to glittering occasions worldwide, along the way enjoying sell out shows at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a one hour concert live on Jazz FM, TV appearances with his band on E4’s Made In Chelsea, has entertained royalty twice, and is a favourite of many celebrities, TV & sports stars to sing at their private celebrations. His evocatively powerful vocals have been in demand by luxe brands like Hermes, Louis Vuitton plus others for promotions in New York, Far East & London, and by global corporations and music publishers for voice-overs, marketing/media events and more. Recently his ‘Sinatra voice’ was chosen above others to impersonate Frank Sinatra’s real voice for a TV advert with the Oscar-nominated Hollywood movie-star Naomi Watts.

GET FIT WITH SIMONA SCOTTO Simona has been working with dance and older people for over ten years and was originally trained to work with frailer older people by Camden Active Health Team, later working with more active older groups. This brought her to actively encourage older people to take up activities earlier in life as an act of prevention… AND fun! Simona is now pulling together all of this experience and knowledge under the one banner, Counterpoint Living, providing dance and fitness services that challenge the stereotyped view of the older person. Over the course of The 50+ Show there will be a mixture of dance performances and dance-fitness classes aimed at inspiring and showing what is possible even as people move in to their more mature years. TRUE STORY COMPETITION WINNER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A true story POMMIES GO HOME I would only have to think of what Sydney Harbour looked like when I first saw it or when I left it three years later, not just the place but for those I’d grown to love there, and I would get a lump in my throat. It was in the late 60s, I was young and adventurous, commuting to Oxford Street by tube for work and shared a flat in Nottinghill Gate, with friends. London then was the height of fashion with music festivals of love and peace but something was missing. I had broken up with my boyfriend and I was on a mission to put the past behind me and start afresh. I had chosen Sydney, as I knew people there and it was all of £10 to emigrate. I was on a plane for three days which took me through different time zones, stopping at Istanbul, Bombay, Singapore The 50+ Show Magazine

and Melbourne. The minute I stepped off the plane at Bombay to change planes, I felt a whoosh of heat enveloping me and the sun beating like a great fan against my tired face. When I arrived at Sydney, and adjusted from the ringing in my ears from the sound of the plane, the first thing I noticed was that the sky was a phosphorescent blue. My friends, whom I had worked with in London, were waiting for me at the airport. I was to stay with them a few nights. We drove along the coast to their home where I could see the arch of the bridge, as full of promise as a rainbow. Enormous and more curious seagulls than I had ever seen in England hovered over us. The stretch of bold advertising along the high street, I could barely see for the kitschy splendor of it all. My new life had begun. The wine that passed around the table that evening, I shall never forget. I drank a lot. I was experiencing mixed feelings of this adventure, a voyage into unchartered waters and the reality of being in Sydney far from home and having to stay for two years. What if I hated it? 40

by Sheila Field

I rented a flat in Darling Point, overlooking a bay, with a small balcony from which I could see the Harbour Bridge and the ferries coming and going. I could see the Opera House slowly rising, near Bennelong Point, and I was later to discover that there was controversy over the cost and the building stopped. The scent was overpowering from the wild flowers that grew on the cliff descent where I would walk down in the morning to the jetty. The sun on my neck, the smell of the sea and the newness of it all was so appealing. It was a ferry ride of 15 minutes to Circular Quay and I marvelled at the blue skies and sea, I never wanted it to end. Other passengers off to work in the city, bank managers in their shorts and knee high socks which I always found amusing, would read the morning papers, oblivious to it all. I couldn’t help looking at the wonders of the harbour and the bridge, the rich blue skies and sea. I struggled at first with difficulties in finding work and making friends. There appeared to be hostility towards the English immigrant in those days. This, I was July 2013

Regenovex your body. Regenovex your life. Pictures above: Some 'snaps' from a very old album (1968/9). The small black and white photos are views from the ferry of Sydney when I commuted to work, the balcony house is where I lived although I think that was when I lived in Paddington and one of the opera house from the ferry still being built. There is one of me on top of a building in Sydney (note the ad!), Geoff and I, a view of Sydney Harbour Bridge and me lying on a deserted beach.

told later, is because they kept moaning and complaining. I used to see graffiti on walls saying “whinging pommies go home” and there were times when I felt homesick. But it soon faded. I fell in love of course. Not just with the bridge and the harbour but with friends, their hospitality, their sentimentality and their recklessness and eventually with a man. Sydney was growing into a great metropolis but still poised between overgrown country town populated with Greek and Italian market gardeners and a gentle beach and harbour. In half an hour from where I lived, I could be on a harbour beach or an ocean beach, washing scallops down with wine, watching beautiful people on the beaches, surfers tumble and children play. How could I not fall in love? When you are young and far from home in a seductive place, you fall in love with the vivid colours and the sensation of distance with its far away sadness, Sydney has always struck me as melancholy. The university where Geoff worked as a scientist and I worked as an administrator, and the clubs where he played his clarinet, filled me with great joy. We’d go from lunching in the grounds, endless walks along the coastline and back to his place listening to Brahms’s clarinet quintet in the fading sunshine. So why did I leave? The simple answer is that you can have too much of a good thing. It was unreal, the wine bars, beach life, although seductive, there was too much fun and not enough work. It is a sad but necessary fact for some of us to face: that we fare better when the going isn’t easy. On the day before I sailed away, I sat on a bench in a park overlooking the harbour and I cried buckets. v The 50+ Show Magazine

My Angel

by Kathleen Oyediran

7 years ago, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, I was undergoing gruelling chemotherapy treatment. Naturally my hair fell out. In preparation for this I had purchased a pile of headscarves to wear, in addition to the wig supplied by the hospital. When my hair began to fall out I was in denial and reluctant to start wearing the headscarves. Seeing this, my daughter, Julie, aged 20, picked up one of the headscarves and put it on her own head. She made a big show of admiring her reflection in the mirror, saying it looked ‘really cool’. She asked if she could keep two of the headscarves and of course, I agreed. She encouraged me to start wearing the headscarves. From that day, she wore a headscarf everywhere she went - to College, to church, to shopping, at home, everywhere. The only time she didn’t wear one was when she went to bed! Just at the age when a young girl wants to look her best, she did this for me. Julie wore a headscarf right through my Chemotherapy treatment to the end and until my hair grew back (8 months). She gave me the courage to get through it. She accompanied me to hospital appointments, fussed over me at home and helped me in every way she could. She was, and is, my very own guardian angel. I will never forget what she did for me. I have tears in my eyes now as I remember all this. Whether I win the competition or not, I am grateful for the opportunity to share this inspiring story of a young girl’s love for her mother overcoming her own vanity. v

Real life story

I

by Pamela Keep

was shy of one week away from my 17th birthday, when my parents pulled the rug out from under my feet. We were living abroad at the time, and I was due to fly out to England to visit my brother and family for my 17th birthday. For a number of days now, my parents had been lecturing me about being careful not to talk to strangers, not to take parcels from anyone – the usual stuff. This particular evening they looked at me and said “We need to talk to you”. “Oh dear me, I thought, another lecture”, but they sat me down and said “after mother had given birth to my brother, problems developed when she had an ectopic pregnancy, and she had to have a hysterectomy. So when they wanted to have a baby girl, they adopted me”. I stared at them stunned, it was like the world had stopped turning and the lights had all gone out. I remember saying to them that it made no difference, I still loved them. It was many years later that I realised that that was not true. My perception of them changed. They were not my parents. So who was I? I did ask my father if he knew anything about my mother and he told me that she had been a teenager, who got drunk and went with a soldier and became pregnant. This was in 1957. A year later I got married, not just to get away from them, but to have something that was all my own. I have 3 beautiful children from the marriage, but the marriage didn’t last. During my first marriage I came with my husband and family to live in England where I stayed with the children when the marriage broke up. I even married a second time, an even worse experience. Looking back now, it took me 25 years to recover from that evening and to come to terms with the facts. So what helped me? Well, in 1982 the law in England changed, and adopted

The 50+ Show Magazine

children could try and find their birth parents. By this time both my adopted parents had passed away. So I started searching, with the help of the social services in my area, and a few months later had the facts in my hand. My mother was 23 when she met my father, but he was already married, so my mother’s family made her give me up for adoption. I wasn’t adopted till I was 4 years old. My father had been honest enough to have his name on my birth certificate, and he paid money to the orphanage the whole time I was there. I remember being so cross with my adopted father for lying to me about my mother. He could have said he didn’t know. Well, this is many years later now, and with the help of wonderful computerised programmes for geneology research, I have found out much, much more, and have even managed to get a photo of my mother, a photo of my father and photos of half brothers and sisters. Two of them have died, but the other two I am in touch with. Both my parents have died, my mother back in 1981, a year before I was legally able look for her. My father died a few years ago, at the age of 96, so maybe I have inherited his genes. I have found cousins, and met some of them. That big hole that I had in my heart since 1957 has now been filled. It was an emotional jigsaw puzzle, which is now complete. I found out that my mother had tried searching for me, but as my adopted parents had taken me abroad, she had no luck. I would encourage others to take the route I have taken. It is exciting to find out about your family, and quite breath-taking when skeletons come out of the cupboards of the past. There are a few in my family. But, they are my skeletons. Part of my past. It is how I got to be here today. So here’s a toast to my relatives, past and present, God bless them all. v

Following my dream by Angela Schooley

W

e sat in the back of a converted Bedford truck, wind blown, dust blown, sweating, 17 of us, different nationalities but all English speakers. Forearms leaning on thighs, chatting with the person sitting opposite when someone said, “Look at our arms.” Our arms had changed to the colour of the harem pants we were wearing. It wasn’t just our arms that took on the colour of the dyes but our bodies from the waist down, as we were to discover in our cold showers that night. It was 1977 and probably the last year that trucks and other vehicles were able to travel from London to Kathmandu, unhindered by geopolitics, following what was known then as the hippie trail. My undoing took place in August 1963 during a school trip to Paris. Paris was my first love, the city where I received my first grown-up kiss and was introduced to a world outside the narrow existence of my introspective hometown. Sometime in the year that followed, I read about what was to become known as the hippie trail and apart from getting a job, my goal after I left school was to follow in the footsteps of these trailblazers. However, the main aim of the majority of my contemporaries from school was to get a boyfriend, get engaged, get married and have a baby – but not necessarily in that order. Not for me this path. Of course, it was some years before I was able to realize my dream of travelling across the Asian subcontinent. In 1976 I was lucky enough to travel around the desert areas of Iran. It was my fellow travelling companions who inspired me to follow my dream. So there we were, in June 1977, travelling across Iran in scorching temperatures, wearing denim jeans. Hardly ideal clothing for such conditions and after crossing the border into Afghanistan, our first port of call was Herat where we kitted ourselves out with harem pants, and long-sleeved tops of lighter fabrics, little realizing that the garments weren’t colour fast. But what did it matter? It was all an adventure and gave rise to much hilarity. From Herat we took the southern route; the northern being too dangerous, the central too expensive ($80.00 per head – remember, this was 1977) so the default was the desert road to Kandahar and from there to Kabul. I wonder now what is left of the old Kabul as I knew it in 1977. If the street is still there that all foreigners gravitated to (known as Chicken Street…or was it Cheating Street?), buying jewellery made from semi-precious stones and other items as souvenirs. Befriended by a jewellery shop owner, we spent evenings sitting on the floor of his shop drinking black tea with cardamom as he entertained us playing the sitar. Our few short weeks in Afghanistan weren’t without incident. Although Kabul was our base, the group travelled into the Hindu Kush, visiting the buddhas carved into the sandstone rock at Bamiyan and the five lakes of Band-i-Amir. The intention had been to camp rough but through a local man who spoke English, we were told this wasn’t to be permitted following the murder of an English girl, shot as she and her friend sunbathed by the lakes in their bikinis. That night we slept in yurts owned by our Afghan interpreter. News of this tragic event reached Kabul before we did, despite the lack of modern telecommunications. Arriving back at the Jewellery store, the shop owner greeted us with obvious relief. This short story is just a snapshot from the journey I undertook in 1977 and I consider myself very lucky to have been able realize my dream when I did. Now, thirty-six years on, it would be impossible.

HOW TO GET THE MOST from your pension savings Top tips for a better retirement by The Pensions Advisory Service.

S

ince 1983, The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) has been helping people understand pensions. We provide independent guidance and information on all types of pension plans. If something goes wrong with your private or workplace pension, we can help with that too. Our service is free and provided by a network of volunteers from across the pensions industry, supported by a small team of staff. With the recent announcement about changes to the state pension, more and more people are keen to know about their future entitlement and are planning for the future.

The 50+ Show Magazine

Here are our top tips for planning your retirement, whether you are considering retiring soon, have recently retired or want to ensure a comfortable retirement in the future.

1. Get a state pension statement. A state pension statement gives you an estimate of the state pension you may get when you reach your state pension age, based on your National Insurance record as it stands when the statement is produced. It includes simple information that will help you understand what effect further qualifying years may have on the amounts shown on the statement. Contact the Pensions Service at: www.gov.uk/state-pension-statement to get a statement.

2. Knowledge is king and being part of it feels royal. Get as much information as you can from your pension provider. They can send you a statement showing how much is in your pension pot, and potentially how much it 44

will be worth when you retire, based on a number of different factors. Your pension provider can also tell you what other benefits your pension has, for example whether it includes a form of life insurance. If you have more than one pension make sure you get statements from all your pension providers.

3. Trace lost pensions. If you have lost contact with an old employer’s pension scheme, the Pension Tracing Service can help you to find a lost pension. They should be able to provide you with the current contact details of your scheme. You can use their tracing service by telephone, post or online. The Pension Tracing Service has access to many pension schemes’ contact details and makes them available to the public, on request. To contact the tracing service call them on 0845 6002 537, complete the online form at www.gov.uk/find-lost-pension or write to them at; Pension Tracing Service The Pension Service

4. Beware of early access schemes. These are sometimes called Pension Liberation Plans. Watch out for predators claiming to be able to release pensions cash as a loan or lump sum before the law allows. The perpetrators often work alongside ‘introducers’ or ‘advisers’ who try to entice the public with spam text messages, cold calls or website promotions into transferring their existing workplace or private pension with the promise of being able to release a portion as cash before the age of 55. The remainder of the funds is likely to be invested in highly dubious and risky, unregulated investment structures, often based overseas. Although it may be tempting to release cash from your pension early, schemes presented to you, particularly if you are under age 55, are unlikely to be legitimate and you will incur a large tax penalty. MONEY MATTERS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Everywhere you look these days someone is talking about bother with a bank, issues with an insurer or problems with a pension. It can seem like managing your own money matters is impossible – particularly when something does go wrong and you don’t know where to turn. But there is an organisation set up to help people when things do go wrong.

Take control of your financial future

The Financial Ombudsman Service – the free service set up by law to sort out problems between consumers and their bank, insurer or financial advisor – has the power to look at individual complaints where you can’t sort things out with the business directly. The ombudsman can look at a range of issues from pensions to mortgages and from credit cards to car insurance. What’s better – as they were set up by Parliament they’re completely free.

We spoke to Anne Leader from the ombudsman service for her top tips for managing your money matter better:

Taking the time to get to know your finances can help you avoid a problem in the future. But it’s always best to expect the unexpected so here’s our tips for handling a complaint if one does crop up:

Brainy banking Don’t just ignore your bank and credit card statements – take the time to read them and make sure that the payments shown are ones you recognise. It also pays to ask your bank for a list of your direct debits and standing orders. If you’re paying for things you don’t recognise or no longer use, consider cancelling them – but tell the business involved first.

1. What are you unhappy about?

Be clear in your own mind what the problem is and how you’d like it to be sorted. This will help you focus your complaint.

Credit control Interest rates on credit cards can change, so it’s worth reviewing your current rate – and shop around, you may find that there is a better offer available elsewhere. Keep a note of when repayments are due to each of your credit accounts – some, like catalogues, are due every 28 days which means the payment date shifts each month. If you’re lucky enough to have an interestfree credit deal make sure you know when the deal ends; your monthly payment will increase after this date.

2. Try to stay calm.

No matter how upset you might be, try to be calm and polite. This can help you get your points across more clearly and effectively.

3. Get in touch.

You should first contact the business you think is responsible and explain what has gone wrong. Try to have any relevant information to hand, for example statements or policy documents.

Perfect pensions Pensions and annuities can be complicated to understand, so if you’re not sure about anything on yours, don’t be afraid to ask. Whether your pension is through your work place or one you’ve set up privately there will be someone you can contact for advice. If there is anything you don’t understand, keep asking until you do. If you don’t yet have a pension, shop around for the best one for you – and if you are seeking professional advice make sure the advisor is regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

4. Write or phone?

It can be a good idea to put your complaint in writing – and keep a copy of your letter. If you prefer to call, make a note of the time and date of the call, the details of what was said and the name of the person you spoke to.

Ideal insurance Motor, home, travel, health – almost everything can be insured these days but how do you know that you’ve got the best deal for you? A cheaper policy may seem like the best option but the terms can vary wildly, so, while it may be boring, make sure you read the documents to check the cover is suitable for your needs. At the same time check that the insurer has recorded all your details correctly – including information about any preexisting medical conditions. v

5. Taking things further.

The business will have a complaints procedure – if the person you are dealing with isn’t able to sort things out, say you want to take things further. And remember, if the business doesn’t get things sorted, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help on 0300 123 9 123 or www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk. The 50+ Show Magazine

How to get MORE LIFE out of your income and savings Author, public speaker and successful property investor Roly Weaver, from MyLife Solutions, draws from his personal experiences to share his tips and advice on ‘ways to increase the money you have in your pocket’.

I

n March 2008, at the age of 50, I was able to say ‘good-bye’ to my day-job as a Chartered Civil Engineer - fulfilling my long standing dream to retire early. I was able to do this because in March 2002, along with my wife Rachel, I started investing in property; I bought family houses and rented them out. By March 2008, the income from my property portfolio exceeded my salary. I had become financially independent. I would like to share with you how you can take control of your finances to get MORE LIFE out of your income and savings.

Our world is changing People are concerned about their financial future. The comments I hear all too often are “I cannot afford to give up work”; “My pension is not giving me enough to live on”; “The interest I’m getting on my savings is not much” and “I may even have to sell my home.” In a recent survey, Scottish Widows found that people think they need £25,200 every year to live well in retirement. Based on what savers are putting away they are more likely to end up living on around £11,400 per year – that includes their private and state pensions. These are very worrying statistics. When we were young we were told to get a good education, get a good job, work hard, work long hours and then we The 50+ Show Magazine

would retire on a pension. This model does not work anymore because there have been significant changes to the world that we were brought up in:

• Major banks, countries and our monetary system have been collapsing • Welfare benefits are being cut • Older people’s ‘special’ benefits are being eroded or removed • Jobs are no longer for life • Pensions are no longer guaranteed to give us a secure future. We can no longer depend on other people to provide an income for us and therefore the need to take responsibility for our future financial well-being has never been greater.

Roly’s Top Tips to taking control of your own financial future • Decide the life you would like to live • Take control of your current finances through money management techniques • Create an investment pot • Use the investment pot to buy assets that will deliver your specific requirement • Identify asset types that best suit your risk, affordability, desire and skill profile • Seek the advice of a trusted company or someone who has achieved what you want to achieve • Learn the fundamental principles of the opportunity • NEVER spend the investments that are generating your income, unless you are reinvesting into other assets.

48

How can I increase my income? In today’s economic climate we need to change the way we think and consider avenues of investment outside our normal comfort zone. Some people turn their hobbies into an income and start a business from home, or find products they enjoy, such as jewellery or health care products, and share them with friends. But all these activities require time – an ever diminishing asset! Others invest in things such as art, stamps, antiques, gold etc. The problem with these types of investments is that you cannot be in control of the price movement. Even share prices and their dividends depend upon global forces beyond our control. There are many investment routes available, some good and some bad, but the one asset class that has consistently outperformed all others over the last 40 years is property. Residential property is the largest asset class in Britain, worth over £4,000 billion, and dwarfs the value of the stock market.

July 2013

MONEY MATTERS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Property is an investment vehicle like no other Property investment offers the best means of building substantial long term wealth in a safe, stable and predictable manner. Unlike the stock market it is almost impossible to lose 100% of a property’s value whereas it is relatively easy to lose 100% of a share’s value. In the long term, property prices have only ever gone in one direction – UP. History has shown that property as an investment doubles in value every ten years. Leverage is one of the major attractions of investing in property. An investor can generate a high return on the capital invested simply because you can borrow most of a property’s value in the form of a Buy to Let mortgage. Therefore smaller sums of personal investment are required to begin building your property portfolio and the return on capital through property investment can be far higher that through other investment routes. If you invest well, your tenants will pay

more than the cost of ownership and maintenance. Property is a tangible asset you own and control and because of this you can affect its ability to perform though simple measures such as decorating, or adding space. Your tenant will then pay you rent which will cover the cost of financing, maintaining and managing your property and give you a monthly income.

Reasons to Invest in the UK Property Market – NOW The UK is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with more than 63 million people recorded in the 2011 census, all of whom need housing. House building in the UK has not kept pace with the demand and there is currently a housing shortfall of 120,000 new homes per annum. With demand for housing far exceeding supply, inflation and unemployment rising, and mortgage lending difficult for First Time Buyers, rental demand is up and rental yields are on the rise. Savills predict that rents will grow +6% to +7% per year

for the next three years. The real attraction of an investment in rental property is not the possibility that the property will appreciate in value. The real attraction is in the cash flow it will provide far into the future. The more cash flow you have, the more financially secure you will be. And, over time, if your rental property does appreciate in value, then all the better! My passion is to help people accomplish the financial independence I have achieved; so they too, do not have to rely on others to provide them with a salary or pension. I have written a book “Retire Early Retire Wealthy – Your essential guide to Successful Property Investing” and set up MyLife Solutions to provide education and mentoring in wealth creation, property investment and money management. GARDENING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS, ALL YEAR ROUND Simple garden jobs that will keep your outside spaces looking great by Catherine Hamilton

T

he most important element in any good garden is having interest throughout all twelve months of the year. This doesn’t have to mean a garden that’s full of blooms the whole time - this is generally unachievable, but it does mean you should have a scattering of lovely things to look at all year, from 1st January right through until the end of December. You might feel rather daunted by trying to achieve this, but don’t despair; Barnsdale Gardens’ Nick Hamilton has some top tips to help you get there... What do they say about inspiration and perspiration? Well, in this case they’re absolutely right because the best way to start is to make yourself a cup of tea and go for a leisurely wander around your plot. Get into the habit of doing it regularly say each week or once a month, and when you feel it looks as though it needs a bit of a lift, that’s the time to get out and about to visit some local gardens. Ones that take

part in the National Gardens Scheme are brilliant for inspiration and they’ll usually have at least one garden of a similar size to your own. Their owners are also an excellent source of information and it’s definitely worth making the most of a gardener’s passion for his plot and quizzing them about the interesting plants you come across in their beds and borders. Seeing different varieties and combinations actually working, and working well, in a real garden setting can only be a massive source of inspiration, even for wellseasoned gardeners. Getting to know other gardeners has other benefits of course; as well as enjoying having like-minded people to share ideas with, most gardeners are pretty generous when it comes to donating cuttings to keen friends. For me, it’s like an addiction - I love propagating plants and I find it very relaxing, therapeutic and thoroughly exhilarating when they root. Not only that, but if I see a plant with shoots that I can propagate, I will propagate it just for the fun of it, which means I have plenty of plants that I do need for the Gardens but also loads of extra ones that I don’t. Luckily, I can give many of them to my local Cottage Garden Society for their plant fair, as well as having some left over to pass on to my long and ever increasing list of friends, who all seem to encourage my

propagating passion! It’s such a satisfying way to stock your garden, and easier than you might imagine; you just need to make sure you use the right method for the right plant at the right time of year. So, go for hardwood cuttings in winter, semi-ripe cuttings from July until the end of October and softwood cuttings from growing tips, really from when the new shoots are long enough (probably April/May) until the middle of September. If any of your cuttings fail you’ll only have to wait a little while for more shoots to appear so that you can have another go and in no time you’ll have lots of lovely new plants to fill those gaps in your garden. Of course, it’s not necessarily all about flowers; anyone who grows vegetables, whether on an allotment, in a plot at the bottom of the garden or dotted prettily amongst ornamental plants in the flower garden as I do, will know how satisfying it can be to have fresh produce at their fingertips throughout the year. A productive plot doesn’t need to be large - there’s a popular misconception that you need an area about the size of five football pitches, but that’s most definitely not the case; no, the most important thing here is a bit of forward thinking. The first thing I always suggest people do before planting anything is to draw up a plan, but nothing too technical, you’ll be pleased to hear! When I talk to would-be vegetable gardeners about the first part of their plan, which is to list what they want to grow, they tend to go for everything they eat the most of. That might seem to be the most obvious way of going about it, but it’s actually unlikely to be the way that uses the available space to its best capabilities. Of course you need to focus on what you like to eat, but try narrowing that down to what tastes the best when it’s picked freshly from your plot (like sweetcorn and asparagus), things that you can grow which are expensive to buy (such as aubergines and French beans) and vegetables that you really like but are impossible to find in most shops (scorzonera, for instance, and salsify). There are many, many varieties of vegetable that you can grow where the taste, when freshly harvested, July 2013

GARDENING

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------backwards and forwards and then pulled out. Repeat this as often as possible, say every 8-15cm (3-6ins) or so, and once all the lawn has been done, you can spread and brush sharp sand into the open holes. Some gardeners advocate scarifying the lawn at the same time, but that can just leave you with partially or totally bald patches to look at all winter- very disheartening! Better to leave it until early spring when the grass will grow back vigorously and quickly cover those patches. Again, for larger areas a mechanical or electrical scarifier is great but on smaller lawns a spring tine rake is perfect. Rake through the grass and it will remove all the moss and thatch, leaving you with grass that has space to grow into and no competition! Your lawn will want a good feed after both these jobs, so in autumn treat it to a special autumnal lawn feed that encourages root growth and gives grass the best possible chance of getting through the winter in good condition; earlier in the year a spring lawn feed boosts the grass into growth, as well as greening up any yellowing grass.

And that, in a nutshell, is how I go about keeping my outside spaces beautiful and productive, all year round. I’m lucky enough to come from a gardening family, and it has always been one of the most satisfying and relaxing ways I could think of to spend my time, so if you can get out there for a couple of hours a week, go for it - you’ll feel fantastic and you’ll have a garden that will be the envy of your neighbours! v

is incomparable to the same vegetables bought from a supermarket, and until you try them you’ll never know! The second stage is where you work out where these varieties will fit into your space, and which crops will follow once one has been harvested, bearing in mind the good sense in rotating your crops each year. Sometimes, seeing it all set down on paper, it can feel rather complicated but the way to look at it is as a fluid plant rather than something that is set in stone. So, if it doesn’t quite work out according to ‘the plan’, things can be knocked on, shuffled about or dropped altogether; I find a glass of wine oils the cogs nicely when drawing up my initial plan, but as time goes on it becomes effortless. Beds and borders of all kinds look their best against that most British of garden features, a lush green lawn, and although it can take quite a bit of work to keep them The 50+ Show Magazine

looking good, most gardeners agree that they really are worth the effort. So apart from the obvious mowing throughout the late spring, summer and autumn what else can we do? Here are a few tricks which will keep your grass looking superb. Firstly, give it room to breathe; moss in a lawn reduces the quality of the grass and leads to bare patches; aerating the lawn to improve drainage will eradicate moss and should be done dur© Hamilton Photography ing autumn, in all but very free draining soils. TERESA’S TREASURES!

by Teresa Farnham

S

omeone asked me to list three shrubs/trees I would have in my garden (if I had the room!). I downsized to a tiny courtyard garden ten years ago but still manage to grow two of them. The Fatshedera lizei which provides me with evergreen colour on the fences all year. The Arbutus unedo which gives me much needed height in this tiny space and now it is mature is strong enough to hold a hanging basket and bird feeders. Alas I have not got room for the Silver Leaf Pear Tree but I am thinking of finding room for one in a large pot...

SOME FACTS FOR MY FAVOURITES Fatshedera lizei Fatsia Japonica (also known as Aralia Sieboldi or Aralia japonica) was crossed with Ivy (Hedera) which resulted in this robust evergreen. Twenty years ago I described the growth of this plant in an article in the “Hardy Plant” Magazine. I had bought it as an indoor climbing plant and after over wintering it outdoors had used it as decorative evergreen wall cover in my garden to cover an unsightly brick wall. It can act as a host for flowering climbing plants such as clematis or roses. It provides a similar cover to Ivy but is not as invasive (with no roots to grow into mortar). It can provide a home for moths and tiny birds such as long-tailed tits in small town gardens. (Above: Fasia Japon

Arbutus Unedo (Strawberry Tree)

A pretty robust evergreen which can withstand drought and strong winds and has foliage all year round. Growing to around 12m. It has shiny laurel-like leaves and is unusual in that it produces flowers and fruit at the same time. It is said to be a relict of the Ice Age when the glaciers retreated. The strawberry tree can be found growing wild in parts of south west Ireland and France. A member of the Ericaceae family, the slow growing Strawberry Tree can live for 400 years and is a boon in any low-maintenance garden. The fruit resembles strawberries and can be eaten. The Latin name unedo means “I eat one”. The fruits are very small and taste bitter. In Portugal, Spain and Corsica the fruit is made into a liqueur. I am lucky in that I have one in my tiny 15 feet square garden that has managed to grow to 10 feet tall and provides interest all year. v

The story of a Silver Leaf Pear Tree

All the sweetness, without any of those unwanted calories.

I

first saw this beautiful tree in Sissinghurst garden so, determined to grow one in a garden I maintained which had very shallow soil, we pickaxed a hole through the asphalt and planted a small specimen two metres high. Two years later, I wearily leant on the young tree struggling to survive in the shallow soil. Craaaa-ck went the stem and supporting stake “Oh …..!” said I. SNAP! went the tree trunk nearly through to the other side of the bark. Determined to save the tree I left my husband holding the trunk together while I rushed in to the office looking desperately for the First Aid Box. I found a gauze bandage, grabbed my saw and found an Elderberry stem the same size as the snapped Pear tree trunk. I cut a slither from the Elderberry and slipped it into the broken trunk, bound it tightly together with the bandage, covered it with bandaged plastic parcel tape and added a thick stake for support. For the following 8 years I regularly loosened the bandage on the tree (I was frightened to take it off!). As far as I know the tree still survives if it has not been over-pruned. Motto: never give up on a tree/shrub and keep gauze bandage with your secateurs for human and plant First Aid! - Teresa Farnham v

RECIPES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOVING FOOD & HATING WASTE! ‘Delicious, quick-as-a-flash, no shopping required, everyone loves it’. If this little phrase of unlikely bedfellows sounds like the stuff of culinary fantasy - in the same vein as self-emptying dish washer and easy-clean juicer, then prepare yourself for a little surprise. This wish list for heaven in the home eating is yours for the taking by simply embracing a few basic principles and ideas. Imagine opening the kitchen cupboard doors and fridge; glancing at the veg rack, and instead of seeing empty spaces, decaying produce, yesterday’s remnants and a scary ensemble of dry goods, you were able to instantly visualise effortless, tasty pizza (with a golden thin and crispy base made from a flour tortilla). Imagine a topping on that pizza of char-grilled courgette strips, succulent roasted pepper (last week’s old veg), a thin spread of Bolognese sauce (three day leftovers), all topped with melting, bubbling cheddar (was dry, with the first bloom of mould). Or how about a golden-fried fish cake stuffed to the gills with tuna mayo, green flecks of blanched broccoli stalk, garden peas and tender potato? And then to finish - a tasty layered dessert made from last week’s croissant (magically transformed into soft sponge), sweet, juicy nectarine (which only minutes previously could have made a couple of overs of test cricket it was so underripe), and a raspberry-streaked crème fraiche.

“Most food waste comes from a combination of phobia, false perception and paranoia” Chances are you’ve probably consigned all the ingredients that went to make the above dishes to the bin at some time or another based on anything from an expired best before date to “it’ll be rotten by the time we get back after the weekend.” Most food waste comes from a combination of phobia, false perception and paranoia: A phobia of re-heating - propagated by the

Roast chicken and slit pea ‘stewp’

This quick, tasty and cheap-as-chips leftovers number was inspired by a mark Hix smoked haddock and fish stock version. My version uses left over roast chicken in place of the haddock and chicken stock instead of the fish stock. The rest is pretty much the same. You can vary the consistency by just blitzing a higher or lesser proportion of the cooked split peas. I’ve called mine a stewp simply because it’s a cross between a soup and a stew...and sooooo tasty! - Richard Fox

dark forces of the European food police; a false perception that slightly brown or bendy means inedible and paranoia that an expired best before may poison you. The first issue to tackle is the phobia of reheating, and the cornerstone of fulfilling that opening line fantasy. You can re-heat just about anything for days after it’s been cooked: chicken, rice, pasta, Bolognese sauce, roasted red pepper, blanched broccoli, etc. etc. The fridge life of any of this stuff is considerably extended by having your fridge on a good, cold setting - mine is just one notch away from freezing stuff. Just make sure you cool your cooked food to room temperature as quickly as possible (thin layers always cool quicker than thick), and then refrigerate or freeze in plastic lidded containers. Secondly, just because your courgette wouldn’t take first prize at the village fete doesn’t mean it won’t be transformed from tired and bendy into tasty and good-looking with a quick blast of heat from the char-grill plate. ‘Scratch beneath the surface’ is the battle cry here, and you’ll be amazed what gems you unearth. And finally, just because it’s stale (bread products) or past best before (everything) doesn’t mean it’s a has-been only fit for the scrap heap. Those dried herbs and spices are a treasure trove of flavour for the mundane and the everyday, so let aroma be your guide not the date. It’s also worth bearing in mind that fruit and veg deteriorates because of enzyme activity which is magically halted through cooking. So, once cooked, you’ve temporarily suspended that deterioration, and you have the double whammy of a load of pre-cooked ingredients in your fridge or freezer that simply need combining in whatever manner you fancy and then simply reheating. Believe me, it’s a lot easier to conjure up a fish cake recipe from nothing when you’re looking at fluffy, cooked mash in the fridge than a gangrenous green tattie with a ‘don’t you dare’ glint in its sprouting eye. - Richard Fox, Chef v

INGREDIENTS: • 200g yellow split peas (soak for a couple of hours) • 1 ½ litres chicken stock (use two cubes in the water, or better still fresh chicken stock!) • 1 onion, finely diced Leftover roast chicken, torn into bite-size peices • Handful of spinach or curly kale • Seasoning to taste

METHOD: • Gently fry the onion in some butter or oil for a few minutes until soft. • Add the drained and rinsed split yellow peas and add the chicken stock (I threw in the broken up chicken carcass for extra flavour – which you need to remove and discard when the peas are ready). • Bring to the boil, skimming off any froth that rises to the surface and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the peas are tender. • Remove about a fifth of the peas and stock and blend. If you think you’ve got too much liquid still in the pea mix, just drain some off. • Add the blended stuff back to the soup, add the chicken pieces and the kale or spinach and cook for a few minutes until the chicken is warm and the leaves are wilted. • Correct the seasoning and serve with some warm crusty bread.

Apparently we throw away around 3000 un-opened bottles and cans of beer a day - WHAT?!? It’s true people – I curse those crazy ‘best before’ dates! Anyway, not us I hear you say. However, it being the weekend and everything it’s entirely feasible you’ve got half a can or bottle left over from last night’s post-pub fun and games. It may be flat – but it’ll work a treat in the dish below. If you’ve got an old leek looking past it in the veg rack, and some spare bacon, get these fired in for fabulous flavour. Also, sadly, the end of the mussel season is rapidly approaching so let’s make the most of these cheap, tasty and quick as hell to cook little bi-valves.

Beer and bacon steamed mussels Serves 2 Ingredients: 1 kg mussels, cleaned and de-bearded 1onion, finely chopped Left over bit of leek, finely chopped Two or three rashers bacon, ideally streaky, cut into lardons (little pieces) 250ml beer 200ml double cream Handful of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped METHOD: • Heat a little oil in a heavy based pan large enough to steam all the mussels, which also has a tight fitting lid. • Add the bacon and fry until golden brown. • Add the onions, leeks and cook on a more gentle heat for a couple of minutes. • Add the mussels and the beer, turn up the heat, put on a lid and cook until the mussels open, giving the pan an occasional shake. • Add the double cream, bring to the boil, turn off the heat and add the parsley. Serve immediately with plenty of crusty bread.

I’m thinking you need a good chocolate fix to follow on from all this savoury stuff. So, I’m delighted to bring you: Ultimate Chocolate Brownie. Of all the chocolate brownie recipes I’ve ever cooked, this is by far the best. It was our staple dessert when I worked for Lettuce event caterers in London and went down a storm with the London celebrity party set. When you discover that chocolate brownie is this easy to make, you’ll never want to buy it again! Feel free to throw in chopped nuts, sultanas or anything else that you fancy – well, within brownie reason anyway!

Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: 230g butter, hot and melted 350g caster sugar 30g cocoa powder 100g plain flour 375ml beaten egg (about 8 eggs) Vanilla essence (a few drops) 200g plain chocolate (roughly broken up)

METHOD: • Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C. • Take an oven proof dish or tin approximately 25cm x 16cm x 5cm deep; grease with butter and line with baking parchment paper. • Butter the paper all over. • Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and then pour into the prepared dish. • Place in the oven and bake for 45 – 50 minutes. • Remove and leave to cool. • Cut into pieces and serve. • Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

or those with short memories, June 2012 was not a month of summer in the UK, but 30 days of the heaviest rainfall on record; indeed relentlessly miserable weather which felt more like November! It may have stayed light until late, but it was rarely something to celebrate outdoors.

and there is the countryside; nothing else. She was right: once you get past the final building in the outskirts, it’s back to nature at its most powerful. mainly sell woolens and warm clothing. Bearing in mind this was June, I can say with certainty that I didn’t see anywhere selling summer clothes. And that’s not really a surprise with the average temperature rarely creeping above 20 degrees. Apparently there was one day of heat wave earlier in the month (25 degrees) and an official half day off work was declared.

Escaping to the sun for a few days was one option, but the chance to visit a land where every kind of weather condition was a possibility, and where they really know a thing or two about the midnight sun was far more exciting. Scheduled flights at civilised times are available, but I selected the low cost option with Iceland Express, the downside being a brutal departure time of 1am from Stansted (just a few tourists, some hardy looking Icelandic natives and the cleaners in the deserted departure lounge). The plane took off in the darkness (and rain) in the middle of the night; but that was the last time that we would see the dark until the return flight a few days later. By 3am we were in broad daylight and flying over a slightly surreal and barren landscape of volcanic earth, lava and rocks. There didn’t seem to be a building in sight apart from the odd farm. After landing at Reykjavik airport, an easy 40-minute coach journey brought us into the capital city (there are no railways in Iceland, and in fact no motorways either). It was chilly and, until reaching the city outskirts, felt like the road to nowhere. Reykjavik itself would be a provincial town anywhere else in Europe, but 80% of the country’s 320,000 population live in or near this pleasant pint-sized capital. As our guide explained, there is Reykjavik The 50+ Show Magazine

A half day is sufficient to see most of Reykjavik; it’s easily navigated on foot. A fabulous new glass fronted cultural centre (the Harpa) has been built on the water’s edge with a comprehensive programme of entertainment (ranging from comedy to classical music). The shops appear to 58

relaxed, and there seems to be no sign of any class system or ostentation. Doubtless there are plenty of wealthy Icelanders, but they are not flash. In fact I had to remind myself that this was the scene of the banking crisis in the not too distant past, and yet it felt nothing like a financial centre. A few businessmen ambled by (in suits and walking boots), but nobody looked like they were in a hurry to close a deal. When it comes to creature comforts, Reykjavik is the second highest consumer of electricity and power in the world. Lit up like a beacon throughout the winter months, with only Las Vegas ahead (although for very different reasons of course), eco-friendliness does have its limits after all. Getting out and about is a must, and there’s an impressive range of excursions, including Reykjavik Excursions whose tour guides are clearly handpicked geographers and geologists, each one passionate about their country and very knowledgeable about the history, rock

formations, volcanoes, flora and fauna. For my three day visit I wanted to pack in as much as possible so selected a half day Golden Circle tour, a full day South Shore tour and finally a Blue Lagoon experience. That combined with a half day in Reykjavik was a perfect combination. The Golden Circle is a tourist route, but worth doing because it takes in some important landmarks. Firstly, Thingvellir, the seat of the original Parliament, then the quite breath-taking Golden Falls, and finally the Geysir (the eponymous geyser), which obligingly spurts most impressively every 5-7 minutes. En route, we learned from our guide about sagas, the tales of Icelandic folklore, the elves and their semi-circles of rocks. We saw some of the 80,000 Icelandic horses that roam the countryside (that’s more than 1 for every 4 people). We learned about the way in which people are named in Iceland – a man takes his father’s Christian name, plus Son, and a woman her father’s Christian name + daughter. And finally I understood how Magnus Magnus-

Day three was a visit to the Blue Lagoon, the only really smart commercial place we visited. It’s set up for corporate trips with the staff dressed up in fancy uniforms with bow ties which, given the laid back nature of the rest of the country, seems a little excessive. But the lagoon itself is incredible, the world’s largest natural swimming pool complete with mud face packs and an unforgettable view. Iceland is a raw and beautiful wilderness, a geographer’s paradise, and a sculpture of the forces of nature. Visiting in the mid-summer and experiencing the midnight sun is highly recommended, although of course a price must be paid for all that summer light, and a visit in winter would find daylight for only a sparse few hours. And the weather? Four seasons in a day; beautiful clear skies, thick clouds, strong winds, heavy rainfall, bright sunshine, hot enough for a t-shirt, chilly enough for a jacket. Constantly changing and all the more enjoyable an experience for it. Tip: When booking a short break to Iceland, pre-booking excursions is a very good idea as it means that your time can be maximised. This is not a country where you want to sit around and do nothing. v Written by: Debbie Marshall Silver Travel Advisor, www.silvertraveladvisor.com

Adapting, innovating, changing - the BBC has a knack of moving with the zeitgeist.

A

s the BBC’s new headquarters at Broadcasting House in London comes into its own, following the recent official opening, and in the run up to the Corporation’s twentieth year on the internet, BBC History Manager John Escolme looks back at the organisation’s modest beginnings, and discovers that a tradition of embracing change and starting small, lies behind its greatest achievements. When the BBC first appeared on the World Wide Web nearly 20 years ago, a tiny The 50+ Show Magazine

team of enthusiasts (but with little money) predicted the Corporation’s future success was dependent on a strong presence online. Few believed them at the time, but their prediction was right. Now the BBC is one of the most recognised brands on the web. Back in 1922 when the BBC was formed, the situation was surprisingly similar. There were four staff, much energy, and an extraordinary will for the new, largely untried medium to succeed. Many were sceptical. Initially it was a commercial BBC that was formed – the British Broadcasting Company. This may have boosted the performance of the set manufacturers on the stock market, but where did that leave the listener? By the end of 1926, what you could hear still fell short of the ‘high60

est standards’ demanded by the then BBC General Manager, John Reith. Reith’s BBC was to be a public corporation, one free of commercial pressures, whose sole aim was to make excellent programmes, and be the leading innovator in broadcasting – technically and creatively. Move forward to the 1930s, and the BBC had to face its next challenge – growing up! The radio audience was getting ever more sophisticated and demanding, and the BBC’s old ways of working, some unchanged since the pioneering days, were becoming steadily out-dated. With greater broadcast hours, and a solid news service, more physical space was needed, preferably in a bespoke broadcasting centre. Only Germany had created such a building by that time, and the designers of the BBC’s Broadcasting House in London July 2013

were determined to equal, if not exceed the German standard. Architect George Val Myer had the foresight to form the building around a metal frame, making the interiors endlessly flexible, and future proof. It has stood the test of time, and remains much loved to this day. Television also had modest origins, and followed a similar progression from obscurity to mainstream. Again a tiny group of passionate pioneers had come together to make real the latest dream in the broadcast world, and by 1936 the BBC had created the world’s first high definition scheduled TV service for the home viewer. This was arguably the BBC’s greatest achievement of its early years, but attitudes toward television were not exactly positive. Radio enthusiasts and professionals looked down on the fledgling medium, and in some quarters television was considered somewhat vulgar! This kind of negativity permeated the BBC hierarchy too, and only tiny budgets were allocated to television production at first. As for buildings, the Television Service had to be content with two tiny studios and offices carved out of a decaying amusement complex - Alexandra Palace in north London. By the late 1950s, BBC Television, like radio before it, had done quite a bit of growing up, and it too needed its own dedicated space. By 1960, that space was BBC Television Centre, a sort of TV Hollywood, where every aspect of programme production could be realised under one roof. Radio, television and the internet remain the backbone of the BBC’s activity to this day. All the services have started small; all have grown up, and in so doing all have changed dramatically along the way. It’s a tradition that has served the BBC and audiences well. v

The best of the best 50+ Awards 2013

50+ Awards

By Dr Robert McCaffrey, 50+ Show director

Does anyone care about what you think? Do you matter to the people that supply you with groceries, holidays, clothes and all of the rest of the stuff that we buy every day? Is anyone listening? YOU BET THEY ARE! They really care, because if they give you what you want at a fair price, they have happy customers who pass on their recommendations, and then the companies make a fair profit. Everyone wins! Here at the 50+ Show, we decided to try and recognise the best of the best, not using a jury or team of judges, but letting our visitors decide, based on their ratings. The 50+ Awards were born! Voting has been going on for the last five months, (with top-rated nominees shortlisted as below) and the 50+ Awards will be presented at an all-ticket Gala Awards Reception on Thursday 11 July at London Olympia’s Pillar Hall. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you think? By Dr Robert McCaffrey, 50+ Show director

In an on-line poll we asked our visitors what they think of being older, what they think of the young and whether they have any regrets - and you told us! First of all, the average age of our respondents was 65. On average, they said that people cease to be young at the age of 50... and it hardly mattered in our survey if you were beyond 80 or less than 50 - they agreed that on average, you leave your youth behind you at the half century mark. We had many funny answers - one lady said that she did not miss her youth on account of being called ‘Ginger,’ but that she now only had grey hair instead. We also had many answers that brought a tear to the eye, especially when asking about ‘regrets.’ It seems we regret not doing something or not taking action, much more often than we regret doing something. In any case, we hope you enjoy reading all about the things that you yourselves may think!

What are the top 10 things that older people dislike about younger people?
