Hidden Gems in the Northwest
Yes! There are riches waiting to be found in the Inland Northwest. Here is a compilation of some treasure hunting hot spots!
Idaho Star Garnets
Outside St. Maries, on the East Fork of Emerald Creek in the Panhandle National Forest, gem-quality almandite garnets are found in the placer gravel of the stream bed. These garnets range from purple to red in color and are significant for their stars, called star garnets. To collect star garnets in the area, you must pay a small permit fee to the U.S. Forest Service. The gravel bars along Rhodes and Orofino Creeks in Clearwater County, near Pierce to the south, also contain deposits of corundum. www.fs.usda.gov/ipnf
Montana Sapphires
Discover your own Montana Treasure, a Montana Sapphire Gemstone from Gem Mountain. Located in the aptly named Sapphire Mountains. What will you find when you sift through the dirt and gravel at Gem Mountain? Sapphires, and lots of them! www.gemmountainmt.com
Fossils, Eocene Plants & Insects
Stonerose Interpretive Center & Eocene Fossil Site – Republic, Washington Visitors to the Stonerose Interpretive Center and Eocene Fossil Site are allowed to collect Eocene (50-million-year-old) fossils. Collecting is limited to three fossils and the museum reserves the right to keep unique or extraordinary fossils for the museum collection. www. stonerosefossil.org
Gingko Petrified Forest State Park
Registered National Natural Landmark, It is regarded as one of the most unusual fossil forests in the world. Curious? Drive to the park overlook and take in the big skies, Columbia River views and outdoor exhibits of petrified wood. Look for evidence of Ice Age floods carved into the walls of the Columbia River Gorge. Occasional specimens lie on the surface and some specimens occur in ancient peat bogs amid tangles of roots, stumps, and empty tree molds. Many of the fossils are an opal formation and are clearly and beautifully grained. www.parks. state.wa.us
Wild about Huckleberries!
Wandering into a field of ripe, juicy mountain huckleberries is one of the unique joys of Northwest hiking. The berries are ripe somewhere between late August. and late September based on the year. Check out hints from the Washington Trails Association and Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes.

Theatre Fun with Connelly Enterprises
This summer Connelly Enterprises (founded by Daniel Connelly) will host its 8th year of theatrical/drama summer camps for kids. Daniel grew up loving the stage and spent a lot of time performing and working behind the scenes with CYT (Christian Youth Theater) North Idaho. As he grew through the program, he discovered his love of directing and his passion for helping young people discover the thrill and power of the performing arts. “I teach my students that there are 6 main things a good performer needs to develop: the ability to speak loud, slow, and clear, and to be brave, bold, and confident. These skills can be applied to almost every area of the kids' lives.
I love seeing campers who are scared to even speak in front of others learn to set aside the fear and anxiety of worrying what others think, and instead, just have fun and live life to the fullest”. Daniel has 5 kids of his own and loves being able to have his 3 oldest be a part of the camps that create lifelong memories.
Each camp runs Monday - Friday from 10am to 2pm. It starts with a Theater 101 workshop, and the kids getting coached through the audition process. Before the day is done, they receive a script and start memorizing right away. On Days 2, 3, and 4 the kids are learning their lines, blocking, songs, and choreography. Lots of games and activities happen in between work time to keep the week one of the best the kids have ever had. On the last day of the camp, the actors have a dress rehearsal on the stage with costumes, lights, and microphones all in preparation for the audience to see the show at 2pm. “I love the teamwork that all the campers learn and the comradery that grows from completing the challenging task of putting together a whole show in just one short week.”
The shows are FREE and open to the public to enjoy. Many of the children attend the camps on sponsorships provided by the community. If you would like to sponsor a child to attend, request information from Daniel by emailing (dconnellyenterprises@gmail.com).
