Things to do this summer P. 14 Drawings by Casper

This will be the last Extra of this semester. The summer has arrived and it is time to cool down in the hot sun. However, do not worry, we will be back next year! We hope to see you soon. This time we will have less to read and more candy for your eyes as a treat. What can we offer you?

The Extra is a place where any Liberal Arts student can vent their ideas and improve their writing skills. We hold a team of enthusiastic and motivated fellowstudents. If you aim to be an author and want to improve your skills or just have knowledge you wish to share, send an email to: Magazine@ExtraMuros.nl

Let’s be honest: I was kind of scared to start at university. I was going to spend my days with entirely new people, studying entirely new subjects, instead of listing to my history teacher about the Second World War for the hundred time. I was going to live by myself, without my mom cooking dinner for me or my dad fixing a broken lightbulb, although they were only one Whatsapp message away to tell me if I could eat potatoes with weird, green stems sticking out. I was going to spend my going out evenings in an entirely new city, where I would probably would get lost a thousand times, considering that I sometimes do not even know the way in the city where I live for almost my whole life. And I was going to have to make new friends, and see my other friends at home a lot less. However, I was also excited to start university for, weirdly enough, the exact same reasons. Although my first year at Liberal Arts and Sciences was probably not that different from the year my fellow students experienced, I am going to tell you something about some of my experiences. Let’s start at the beginning: TOP Week. There was no doubt for me that I was going to join TOP Week. I was scared that everybody would have made friends during this week and that if I did not join, I would never be able to make any friends after that and that I had to spend the rest of my university life as a loner (I know I sound like a drama queen here but this scenario was haunting me in my worst nightmares). To summarize my TOP Week (I am not going to write down everything, that would bore the crap out of you): it was a great experience. I have some amazing memories of those five days and although I now also hang out with some people who were not in my TOP group, it was the best opportunity to get to know some of the people in the program already and to get some first glances of Tilburg. During the rest of the year, I got to know a lot more people, even some second and third years. So my worries about not making friends were, clearly, a waste of time.

The Extra There have been a lot of events and moments during my first year that I have really nice memories of, but one of the best things was the Study Trip. We had to sign up for the study trip pretty early in the year, when I did not know too many people. Since I was in a kind of adventurous mode and since I like to travel anyway, I signed up, although I did not know who else was going to join. But I figured that if you have to spend 10 days with the same people, it would be quite hard not to make new friends. It was a great decision. My vocabulary got enriched with some new prestigious words and I saw whole new levels of sleep deprivation. We unintendedly did the perfect mannequin challenge with sleeping people on a bus. There are so many other stories to be told from that time and I look back at it with a big smile on my face (again, I’m not going to write everything down. I guess I have to leave some space for other articles as well).

“THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU TO SURVIVE YOUR FIRST YEAR IN LAS IS TO NOT WORRY TOO MUCH”

I think that the best advice I can give you to survive your first year in LAS is to not worry too much. You can have nightmares about not getting any friends or having worries about people not liking you, but just as I tried to show you with some of my first-hand experience, those worries are a waste of time. The people in LAS are really open and there will always be someone who wants to be your friend. Just go with the flow, enjoy your time and meet as many new people as you possibly can (but don’t forget to study, that is also one of the reasons why you’re here. I know, I sound like your mom, but it is important). You could maybe even take this as life advice. As Leo F. Buscaglia once said: “Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.”

Plant Nanny - Water Reminder It’s an app to help you drink enough water. You need to drink water to keep your plant alive. It’s similar to Forest but with water.

LAS–Café 2017 On the 11th of May the Cultural Committee held its annual LAS Cafe at Tilburys on Campus. The LAS Cafe strives to obtain a better and more informal understanding between students and teachers. Under the watchful eyes of their students, four members of the Liberal Arts and Sciences staff and teachers, took to the stage to brave the questions that were thrown at them.

This year's featured guests were Diahann Brown, a delightful force of nature had everyone rolling on the floor in laughter with her deep debate on who would win in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

She was then followed by Geno Spoormans, everybody´s favourite student advisor who was happy to disclose that he owned five meters of poetry, whilst at the same time answering deep questions about life.

After Geno the stage was given to the Mind of Mind & Brain Hans Dooremalen, who explained to the students why it was important unravel "Bullshit" or as it is more commonly known as people who act as if they do but don't have any actual idea of what they are talking about and just want your money. He also illuminated the beginnings of his decade long friendship with Herman de Regt.

The last (but definitely not least) professor to be interviewed was Herman Beck. Not only did he disclose his life journey and how he ended up in Tilburg University, but he also revealed the scariest moments of his life when he was working as a taxi driver during his studies.

Everyone’s a aliebn when ur a aliebn too Author: Jomny Sun

August (Auggie) Pullman is about to start 5th grade. He has never gone to a mainstream school. He was born with a facial deformity that makes kids turn away which is why his parents home schooled him so far. Auggie tries to convince his new classmates that he’s just like them. This book is also being made into a movie (it’s released in December).

This book is based on the play by Barrie. It’s about Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn’t grow up; Tinkerbell, a fairy; the pirate Captain Hook; and the Wendy, John, and Michael, the kids. They all fly to Neverland, a fantasy kind of world. You might also know the many movies about Peter Pan, that were based on the book/play.

This is the illustrated story of a lonely alien, is sent to observe earth and learns that earthlings can feel lonely too. Jomny meets all sorts of creatures with different perspectives on life and through this learns to feel better about being an alien. It is based on a popular Twitter account, @jonnysun.
