The Barmy Fox Shop

Tory McNidder Birmingham, UK Tell us about something new: I’ve just launched some new project bags! They now come in the kits so you can take all your embroidery bits and bobs on the go with you! So whether you’re stitching in the park or cosied up on the sofa, you’ll always have it there with you. I’ve also released some brand new stick and stitch packs, which are designs made on water soluble paper. It makes it super easy to stitch on anything and jump on that upcycling trend! What’s your creative process? It’s all about playing and seeing what I can make that come out of that ‘play time’. Most of my ideas start as little sketches in the corner of my planner and then they get refined on my iPad. Finally they get stitched up and I decide if they become a product or if it should just be a nice practise hoop. Not all my ideas make it and that’s ok! I try to source all my materials locally, which has been hard during lockdown, but still doable.

BPianca Ceramics Shop

Barbara Pianca Birmingham, UK Introduce yourself: I started potting six years ago, when I made an artist pass that allowed me to use a pottery studio, experiment and self teach me ceramics. I loved it so much that I decided to create my own brand. Since then I have been combining sculpture and design and creating functional unique pieces. I chose porcelain because of its tactile and smooth surface. It reminds me of stone, but it's much easier to work with. What’s your newest make? My work is always developing, recently I made a new Goccia vase. I love how it shows movement. It's the perfect gift for art and nature lover, it's a beautiful abstract sculpture and an elegant vase. It's made from my original shape and mould, slipcast in porcelain, glazed and fired twice.

Black metallic and white vases

What’s your latest goal? Lately I have decided to make a vase as tall as my kiln. I have looked for the right shape and drawn a lot. But I am so impatient that I wanted to go straight to that big shape. Only when I started the shape I decided to make a smaller version first, in case after making shape and mould (which take a long time) I would have not been happy with it! Tell us about your process? I think a lot, I start imagining multiple possible shapes on a white wall (my favourite canvas), then I draw on paper the ones I am kind of happy with until I find my next shape. I use porcelain because of its tactile, pure white and smooth

Top view of the white vase

surface. I studied sculpture, stone carved for years and I am obsessed with clean shapes. Slip casting allows me to make my own shapes and my own plaster moulds. I chose this medium over slab building and throwing because it helps me to control better the shape.

Brumbeth Shop

Bethany Dartnell Birmingham, UK Tell us about your making process? Everything is based on my favourite architecture in and around Birmingham and London. Normally forgotten buildings or the too ugly to love buildings. The majority of my work is done in either fineliners, paint or watercolor and recently colour has become a huge part of my work. All of a sudden I love blue and pink. This has never happened! All my work comes wrapped up with a handwritten note and business card. I try to reuse any boxes from my own deliveries so they might not always be beautiful on the outside but it's the inside that counts! What is your favourite thing to make and why? Any commission work. I love a challenge and I also love being trusted with people's favourite buildings. What items do you have favourited on Etsy as wish lists to treat yo'self? I've got my eyes on some earrings as always and then some prints to help brighten up my studio!

By Lou Moffat Shop

Louise Moffat Birmingham, UK Tell us about your favourite product to make: My favourite product to make is my turtlenecks as I just love the process of sewing clothing together! I find it really satisfying taking a pattern I’ve hand drafted and then using it to construct the tops. Having graduated from a fashion degree, designing and sewing clothing is my first love so I can’t believe people are buying and wearing clothing I’ve made! What’s your new product? One of my new products is my silk knotted headbands made in a variety of my prints. I love the fabric I choose to make the headbands out of as I use a sustainably printed Floral Turtleneck

silk that has a super luxurious feel to it as well as a subtle sheen. Each headband is then sewn up by me using a mixture of an overlocker, domestic sewing machine and hand stitching to neaten the headband ends. I just love how all the headbands look and think they are going to be the perfect Spring/Summer accessory! What do you love about Spring? The fact the days stay lighter for so much longer! I feel like that along with all the flowers starting to bloom makes everyone feel so much happier!

The Cluttery Shop

Zoe Millman Birmingham, UK Tell us about your making process? With my jewellery I often start with a theme and then find inspiration in books and online. What follows is lots of sketching and honing my designs until I'm ready to actually start making. My laser cutting is outsourced to a local, female-owned company and I buy all of my silver findings from the Jewellery Quarter. I try to source other materials such as wood and metals from independent businesses to help support the maker community. My concrete pieces are made entirely in my studio from moulds. Trial and error plays a large role with these pieces, since the materials (concrete and colourants) are so changeable. What do you enjoy most about this time of year? Spring flowers and seeing the trees in leaf are two of my favourite things about this season. Being able to enjoy the lighter evenings makes everything seem more hopeful. Teal Scallop Earrings

The Crafty Bun Studio Shop

Holly O’Meara Stourbridge, UK Tell us about a new product: My newest product is my Mother and baby badger print. I created it for my Mum for Mother's day and she absolutely loved it! I love creating prints inspired by British nature. The print was created using a technique called drypoint and I used two separate plates to make the image. Drypoint is intaglio printmaking. It is done by etching into a sheet of perspex or copper with a needle-like tool which creates a rough texture, this is what the ink clings tomanual hot foiling machine using metal dies and foils. Tell is a fun fact or two:

Mother and Baby Badge greeting card

The name CraftyBun Studio comes from my old rabbit Baxter who used to keep me company in my studio. From about the age of 7, my Mum would take us orienteering (really early) most Sundays. It was a wonderful way to experience nature and the outdoors. But also lead to regularly getting very lost!

What is your favourite thing to make and why? I love collagraph and the unpredictable nature of the inking Snoozing Tabby Cat coasters

up process. I can get really experimental with my colours and I love how they blend together on the plate! It was a similar effect to etching but without the chemicals

Cobweb felted poppy flower brooch

I work from a small studio space at the back of my house. For larger projects I often spill over into the rest of the house. Like a lot of artists though, our work is interwoven through our lives so it is not unusual to find fluffy bits under sofas and projects or towels drying on the washing line along with a jumper. Fluffy, unspun wool is gently laid, then has warm, soapy water added. It is then rubbed and rolled until it mats and shrinks to form a finished piece. 3D projects are shaped whilst still warm and wet while flat pieces may be delightful as they are - or have embroidery added.
