Even more central Etobicoke residents can expect to hear that all-familiar low-flying helicopter whir later this month when the city aerial sprays to combat the gypsy moth. Paul Zimmer will again fly his twin-engine helicopter between 5 and 7:30 a.m. some 15 to 30 metres above the treetops of seven Etobicoke neighbourhoods between May 21 and June 11 to kill gypsy moth caterpillars that threaten the area’s oak trees.

Taste of the Food Terminal offers look into the field to table connection CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For just the second time in its nearly 60-year history, the Ontario Food Terminal will open its doors to the public next weekend for the Taste of the Food Terminal event. The four-hour, family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, May 25 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., featuring educational guided tours, a farmers’ market, kids’ activities, live entertainment and tons of interactive workshops for the whole family, said Paola Guarnieri, director of event production for this year’s Taste of the Food Terminal. “It’s going to be fantabulous!” she said. “There really is this curiosity and this interest on the part of the public to learn more about the terminal and how it is this important source of fruits and vegetables...and because we’ve never really been open to the public, aside from last year’s event, we’re providing a service in the sense that we’re able to educate the public on the positive effects the terminal has on our communities.” Located on a 40-acre site at 165 The Queensway (between Park Lawn Road and Stephen Drive in south Etobicoke), the Ontario Food Terminal is the province’s “stock exchange” for fruits and vegetables – the only wholesale market in Canada and the third largest in North America. raising awareness One of the biggest reasons organizers of this year’s event decided to once again open the doors of the Ontario Food Terminal to the public was to raise awareness of its “importance and uniqueness”. Not only does the terminal ensure the availability and variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and horticultural products at competitive prices, it also serves as an important source of fresh produce to restaurants, independent grocers and others in the food service sector. “It’s not just the wonderful nutrition, it’s really animating our neighbourhoods,” Guarnieri said, noting that without the terminal, Ontarians would not enjoy the number and variety of restaurants and local green grocers that are presently available across the province. The other goal of the Taste of the Food Terminal event is to raise funds towards FoodShare Toronto’s school nutrition program, which feeds more than 144,000 local students with a healthy meal, including fresh fruits

Admission includes a delicious meal served at a fresh salad bar, compliments of the terminal’s wholesalers and farmers and prepared by the Good Food experts at FoodShare. Other highlights of the event will include: w visitors will be able to tour the terminal’s premises, where each wholesaler will be sampling select produce and selling single items of produce (all proceeds to FoodShare). w a pop-up neighbourhood with participating independent grocers and restaurants lining the terminal’s “main street” to sample products w visitors will learn about the care-

ful process involved in bringing fresh produce to market through guided tours of the terminal facility w in the farmers’ market, visitors can purchase annuals and perennials straight from the farmer and just in time for gardening season w the Good Food School, featuring the Young Sprouts Planting Centre and Budding Chefs Station, will allow children to make the connection between field and table, while getting their hands dirty at the same time w interactive activities for the whole family include a freestyle soccer playground, a relay race, and a craft station w jugglers, clowns and other awardwinning performance artists from Zero Gravity Circus will entertain visitors alongside children’s entertainer Great James, who will sing everyone’s

favourite tunes with music powered by his bicycle The Taste of the Food Terminal’s kid-friendly focus this year – especially having FoodShare’s school program as its beneficiary – is aimed at getting kids to eat healthy, Guarnieri said. “That’s something that’s near and dear to our wholesalers and farmers,” she said. “They want this generation of kids – the next generation of consumers – to be growing up healthy. They want to get them hooked on fruits and vegetables early so they continue that through their adult lives – and getting fresh fruits and vegetables into the schools through FoodShare is a very important thing.”

An Etobicoke couple is launching The Borderline Walk later this month to raise awareness of the mental illness that took their daughter’s life. Sasha Menu Courey was a national record-holding swimmer and Olympic hopeful on full scholarship at the University of Missouri. She achieved a 4.0 GPA in her first semester. Friends admired her contagious laughter, her love of fun and excitement and her trademark bear hugs. But internal storms brewed. After successive emotional losses including her grandparents, her best friend and her romantic relationship, and sidelined by injury from the sport she loved and unresponsive to counselling treatment, Menu Courey took her own life in June 2011. She was 20. Menu Courey’s death came 10 days after her diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD. BPD is a pervasive pattern of instability in a person’s self-image, characterized by markedly disturbed relationships, mood swings, impulsivity, chronic suicidality and selfharming behaviours, indicates the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. The little-known mental illness presents a further challenge to treat due to too-few treatment facilities, programs and professionals trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, the most effective known BPD treatment, Menu Courey’s parents learned in their desperate attempt to save their daughter’s life. The couple launched the Sasha Menu Courey Fund and www.sashbear.org to spread awareness. Sashbear.org hosts its first Borderline Walk sponsored by Herzing College on Sunday, May 26 starting between 8 to 10 a.m. on the Sunnyside boardwalk. Check in by Sir Casimir Gzowski Monument.

Enjoy the long weekend safely and responsibly W

hether you’re in a car on the highway, a boat on the water or in your house working on a do-it-yourself project, the message is the same when it comes to safety. We must all practise it and encourage others to do so. It needs to be habitual, not a one-time act. As the Victoria Day long weekend approaches, there’s always the traditional advice to drive safely and act responsibly. This advice takes on a heightened importance in light of some numbers released by Sunnybrook hospital in North York. Sunnybrook noted the number of trauma patients it treated over the 2012 Victoria Day weekend (21) was almost double from the 2011 our view patient total. That number from 2012 is also higher than those from Victoria Day weekends in 2008, It’s sound 2009 and 2010. advice worth While Joanne Banfield, manager of Sunnybrook’s trauma injury prerepeating vention, isn’t sure why the number spiked last year, it’s a definite cause for concern. Regardless of what your weekend activities will be – on the road, on the water, in your yard – enjoy the time off, but be aware of your surroundings and what other people around you are doing. Time with our friends and families in our respective communities is precious. We all value it. Let’s make sure we enjoy it. If travelling on the roadways, be patient and give yourself plenty of time with expected traffic volumes. Remember, too, police forces go to great lengths ahead of time to publicize an increased presence on our roadways. Calls for safe practices in all walks of life may seem repetitive and restrictive, but there’s a reason why they’re still around: there’s still work to be done. For example, seatbelts have been mandatory in all provinces and territories for more than two decades yet Transport Canada statistics show seven per cent of motorists and passengers still don’t wear a seatbelt. They account for 40 per cent of fatalities in vehicle collisions. You’d think we’d get the message. So we repeat: buckle up, use a buddy system if you’re going swimming, if you’re lighting fireworks, follow the instructions. Traumatic injuries are preventable. We all have a role to play in preventing them.

More legislative futility at city hall

O

n Monday, May 13, six members of Toronto council had a look at possible changes to the way they’re elected. City clerk’s staff had come out with a range of ways to make the process more open, to make sure that as many residents as possible are enfranchised, to make the best choice for representing their needs and aspirations. The committee would have none of it: all the recommendations, even one to help disabled people vote over the Internet, lost on a tie vote. It was a depressingly familiar moment of legislative futility at city hall. The week previous, council had similarly failed, utterly, to present a coherent opinion on funding for the public transit expansion that Torontonians desperately need. That failure was undoubtedly the more

david nickle the city serious of the two. Over the course of two days, councillors collectively rejected nearly every funding option set in front of them. And then the same council voted to ask for hundreds of millions of dollars of new transit projects. scarborough subway? Now, council supports to spending another $500 million to turn the Scarborough RT minisubway into a full-blown subway and another subway line connecting Downsview station to Yonge-Sheppard station along Sheppard Avenue West. The transit asks are absurd practically, but useful politically.

York Centre Councillor James Pasternak joined council with the narrowest of electoral margins, and he did so in part on a pledge to see that subway connection built. Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker was elected more handily in 2010, but has made a name for himself opposing Mayor Rob Ford’s “Scarborough” subway along Sheppard Avenue East. He and other councillors from Scarborough know full well that many of their constituents voted for Ford because of his subway promise. Opposing subway expansion entirely in Scarborough is going to hurt at least their victory margins, and could see them out of a job. The fact that both positions – the mayor’s and council’s – amount to little more than expensive and unproductive pandering is beside the point. Under

the current electoral system, pandering is the most effective weapon in the campaign arsenal. Would changing the electoral system resolve Toronto’s transit gridlock issues? By itself, it’s unlikely. improve governing But the reality is that for a variety of reasons, Toronto council has descended to a level of braying, craven opportunism that if allowed to persist, will render it all but irrelevant in the lives of Torontonians. It might just make sense to see if there’s a better way to have a government that reflects both the will and the needs of Toronto’s entire community. All the evidence suggests that the current system has not done so.

Metrolinx CEO comments on transportation plans To the editor: We all agree that getting around in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) can be challenging. With an average commute time of 82 minutes, our region is currently among the worst in North America for daily commute times. The GTHA is growing and will continue to grow. In the next 10 years our population will grow by three million. If we do nothing to address congestion – if investments in infrastructure are not made – we could end up spending an average of 109 minutes commuting every day. The price of congestion and delays is high. We know that the GTHA loses out on about 26,000 jobs due to congestion and costs our economy $6 billion a year. Congestion has direct, negative impacts on our economy and our environment, and the price we pay is about much more than how it translates to a fiscal bottom line. It is also about quality of life, our health and well-being – how we are able to spend time on what matters to us. Metrolinx has a plan to ensure our roads and public transit systems

across the GTHA are able to meet the needs of families, businesses and visitors. It’s called The Big Move. The plan was endorsed unanimously by all the GTHA municipalities four years ago. Sixteen billion dollars in investment has already started the building of The Big Move. There are number of major projects completed or currently in construction that will transform how our region moves. The Union Pearson Express will cut the journey between the airport and downtown to a quick 25 minutes. GO Transit is expanding, with major infrastructure projects like the Union Station Revitalization and the Georgetown South Project creating new capacity to meet rapidly growing customer demand, and help make the GO Train an even more convenient travel option for you and your family. New rapid transit is being built across the region. Currently under construction is an 18 kilometre eastwest busway that will run across the City of Mississauga, as well as vivaNext, a network of bus rapidways in York Region. Züm express buses have been introduced in Brampton, and Pulse express buses will soon

launch in Durham. Toronto light rail transit (LRT) projects are already underway. These are just some of the over 200 projects currently in progress across the GTHA. Significant gains are being made; but it is clear that more is needed. Next wave The Big Move’s proposed next wave projects will continue Metrolinx’s transformation of the region’s transportation system by expanding the regional transit network and providing resources for local transit, roads, walking and cycling, and more. The next wave is worth $34 billion. It is a significant investment and from it the economic benefits of construction will be enormous, creating between 800,000 and 900,000 new jobs, and growing Ontario’s economy by $110 to $130 billion by 2031. Metrolinx is tasked with providing advice to the Ontario Minister of Transportation and the heads of the councils of municipalities in the GTHA on an investment strategy, including proposals for revenue

generating tools that may be used by the province or the municipalities to support the implementation of the transportation plan for the regional transportation area. This advice is due to be delivered by June 1, 2013. The benefits of the next wave will be felt across all six regions in the GTHA, including projects close to you. In Toronto, projects will help residents move within the city and travel across municipal boundaries. Relief line A new subway ‘relief line’ will connect the east to the downtown core, easing congestion on the BloorDanforth and Yonge-UniversitySpadina lines, and creating space that will allow for an extension of the Yonge line from Finch subway station to Richmond Hill in York Region. Union Station is being revitalized to improve its quality and capacity and make your experience more efficient and comfortable. Getting to and from destinations outside of the city will be less of a hassle with GO Transit two-way, all-day service,

Suspect to enter not guilty plea in murder of Tim Bosma: lawyer A man with ties to Etobicoke has been charged with firstdegree murder in the death of Tim Bosma. Dellen Millard, 27, had

dozen journalists outside the downtown Hamilton courthouse. “ We’re defending it,” Paradkar said. “We’re pleading not guilty.” In cour t documents, Millard is listed as living on Maple Gate Court in Etobicoke, which was transferred from grandparents Carl and Della to Dellen and his father in April 2008. While family, friends even strangers held out hope Bosma, 32, would be found alive, police discovered the Ancaster father’s charred body after a week-long search across the GTA. seeking more suspects

SEARS SHERWAY GARDENS RIDES THE BIG BIKE FOR THE HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION On Friday, 20 employees from Sears at Sherway Gardens mall took part in the annual Big Bike Ride for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Through donations, the Sears team raised money to help fund research, health promotions and advocacy to increase the cardiovascular health of Canadians.

Investigators continue to seek two other suspects and a motive to explain why Bosma was targeted and killed. Police say Bosma posted his truck for sale online and was contacted by two men in their mid-20s, who arrived

at his home on foot. After leaving with them for a test drive, he never returned. A day earlier, police allege the same men arrived at an Etobicoke business to test drive a newer Dodge Ram model, but returned the man and departed. Matt Kavanagh told a news conference Tuesday afternoon. He revealed Bosma’s body was “burned beyond recognition” and a cause of death has not yet been determined. Kavanagh said based on video evidence they now know when Bosma left his

home with two males to test drive the truck, a second vehicle — which may have been an SUV — followed them. It i s n ow c o n f i r m e d Bosma’s black pickup truck was found inside a trailer that police say is registered to Millard’s company parked at his mother’s home in Kleinburg. Kavanagh said he still cannot say what motive the suspects may have had in kidnapping Bosma — who he said was targeted. Kavanagh would not confirm where Bosma’s remains were found in Waterloo. Police have executed two search warrants in the Waterloo region and officers were seen at both a farm property owned by Millard and the Waterloo Regional Airport hangar where Millard’s aviation company is headquartered. ~With files from Torstar News Service

Several neighbourhoods to be sprayed >>>from page 1 agent that attacks the digestive tract of caterpillars and kills them. The gypsy moth is considered a major pest in North America whose caterpillars eat the leaves of trees making them more susceptible to disease and damage from other insects or weatherrelated factors. Pr i n c e s s Ga rd e n s i n Etobicoke is considered hardest hit by the gypsy moth. City reports indicate approximately 35,000 egg masses per hectare — more than double that of the next most-infested area around Thorncrest Road. Princess Gardens’ egg masses are 21 times worse than those found in the Bloor Street West-Royal York Road area, the area of Etobicoke with the lowest egg masses also considered to be at outbreak levels. Zimmer will aerial spray BTK over eight treatment blocks: Princess Margaret Boulevard and Ashford Drive; Royal York Road and Bloor Street West; Thorncrest Road

and Thornbury Crescent; Herne Hill; Humber Valley Golf Course; The KingswayEdenbridge Drive and North and Valecrest drives as well as Moore Park. Spraying is weatherdependent and will only be done in ideal conditions. City officials encourage residents within the affected spray zones to check for updates by visiting the city’s website at www.toronto.ca/trees/gypsymoth.htm or by calling 311. estimated cost The city’s 2013 control program is estimated to cost $300,000. As in years past, affected residents in the aerial spray blocks will receive a voluntary payment invoice from the city. In 2007, invoices were $183 each, less the following year. Approximately, 20 per cent of residents who received the invoices in 2007 and 2008 paid them, the October 2012 report indicates. City officials did not expect

to aerial spray BTK again for seven to 10 years following the last aerial spray in 2008 over two small areas of Etobicoke: Cranleigh Court and The Kingsway-Royal York Road area, Kristjan Vitols, city supervisor of forest health care, said. Neither did Zimmer when interviewed by The Guardian in May 2007. “I don’t believe for the next five years or 10 years that we’ll be doing gypsy moth spraying in a municipal setting. It’s a blip. Just as it came online quickly, it will go offline just as quickly.” Last spring and summer, city urban forestry staff identified a number of gypsy moth “hot spots”. Last September, egg mass surveys identified potential gypsy moth outbreaks, resulting “clearly demonstrating” a number of locations require aerial treatment this spring, the 2012 city report indicates.

Councillors vote against condo development proposal >>>from page 1 opposition to a “too big, too dense, too tall” proposal they said would transform their quiet, ‘50s-era strip mall into a bustling condo and commercial hub. The development, many speakers argued, would add even more traffic to their already overloaded roadways, destroy the village-like character of the community, necessitate the bussing of children to attend schools outside the neighbourhood, and set the precedent for even more largescale development in a neighbourhood characterized by its single-family dwellings. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build something truly special at Humbertown,” Niels Christensen, president of the Humber Valley Village Residents Association (HVVRA) said in his address to councillors. “Under your leadership, we can do better and we respectfully submit that you reject this application.” Still others, like Edgehill Road resident Irene Chwartacky, went a step farther, likening the proposal to

a “monstrosity.” “This proposal is too big, too tall and too dense,” she said. First Capital Realty, the owners of the property, have put forth an application that would see the demolition of the plaza to make way for the construction of a total of 604 residential units in three condo-retail towers (ranging in height from eight to 12 storeys) and 28 three-storey townhomes. Its proposal also calls for two two-storey commercial buildings, which would allow for the retention and expansion of the retail offerings currently on the site – including a grocery store, liquor store, drug store, restaurants, a child care facility and a fitness club. The result, said First Capital spokesperson Cyndi Rottenberg-Walker of Urban Strategies, is a “complete community that integrates places to live, to shop, to work and to play.” “The application has undergone numerous very positive changes as a result of an extensive consultation and review process. The density

Concerned residents packed the Church on the Queensway for the Etobicoke York Community Council meeting Tuesday on the proposal to turn Humbertown shopping plaza into a residential and commercial hub.

has been reduced. The height of the three residential buildings has been reduced, and, in fact, the number of residential buildings has been reduced from five to three,” she said, noting that First Capital’s original proposal called for five residential buildings ranging in height from 11 to 21 storeys – a proposal that has since been scaled down as a result of input from the community.

“...A wide range of comments and policy requirements have been balanced here, while delivering the development of very high quality that will add substantial value to Humber Valley.” Humber Valley Village residents disagreed in full force. That Tuesday’s statutory Etobicoke York Community Council meeting on the issue of the future of Humbertown

Plaza had to be moved to a 3,200-seat venue at Church on the Queensway to accommodate the proposal’s naysayers is a testament to the level of opposition it faces. Dozens of people still remained on the list to speak after more than four hours of deputations on the issue when, at around 9 p.m., councillors interrupted the long succession of opposition to

announce to the crowd that they’d already come to a consensus to refuse the application. “We still have another 40 people or so on the list and we have no problem staying – I’m in for the next five hours if need be,” said Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford. “But we’re all in consensus that we’re gonna kill this thing.” In a motion put forward to her councillor colleagues, Etobicoke Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby asked not only that EYCC refuse First Capital Realty application and authorize the retention of outside consultants to appear before the OMB in support of that decision, she also requested that a Secondary Plan Review be authorized before any other such applications for redevelopment in the area be considered. Both of Lindsay Luby’s motions were unanimously approved by EYCC councillors and Mayor Rob Ford, and will now go before city council in June.

How to Select Your Home Improvement Contractor The Certified Contractors Network (CCN) is an independent, North American organization focused on increasing the professionalism in the contacting industry, as well educating home owners on how to select a professional contractor. CCN states that “the critical factor in a successful contracting project is selecting the right contractor”. Martingrove students Reach for the Top – and come out on top ‘Buzzer Bears’ prepare for nationals TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Martingrove Collegiate Institute students have reached the top. The team of six students took the provincial trophy at the Reach for the Top tournament last weekend beating 39 other regional champions who represent more than 200 schools in Ontario. It is the Martingrove RoadEglinton Avenue West area high school’s first provincial win since the 1980s. Most years, the team makes it to the Ontario finals. “It was great,” said Michael Goldberg, team coach and Martingrove Collegiate’s head of the business and IT department. “These guys worked really hard at it. They were in my room and practised the first day of school. During the teacher action, they were self-coached. It’s fun.” Martingrove students Isaac Thiessen, Evan Yeung and starters Erik Christensen, Mark Greig, Paul Kasinski and Kieran McQuattie took the tournament. The teens range in age from 15 to 18. All were involved in years’ past.

Its provincial and national competitions are modeled on the former, wildly popular 1966 national television show of the same name with separate local productions across Canada and national finals ser ies played by regional winners.

BOUND FOR NATIONALS In two weeks, the team advances to the national finals. Reach for the Top is a team-based trivia game with teams of four players who buzz in once a question is read and who achieve points for correct answers. Questions are asked on a range of topics related to high school curriculum in subjects like politics, history,

CBC stopped airing Reach for the Top in 1985. Coming out of a roundrobin tournament on Sunday, the MCI “Buzzer Bears” finished with a topranked 7-0 record. Martingrove led Richmond Hill’s PACE Academy for Gifted Children throughout most of the final game on Monday and clinched it 340-320 points.

“They’d led most of the way through the game when the other team started catching up,” Goldberg recalled. “In the final round, they were up 80 points. It was a bit of a scare. But they were poised. They pulled it off.” McQuattie, 18, has been on Martingrove’s “Buzzer Bears” team throughout his entire high school career. Each team member has his own specialty. McQuattie’s is that he’s a voracious reader on a wide variety of subjects. “I like the intellectual nature of it. Everyone who goes there has similar interests, similar personalities. Everyone is quite knowledgeable,” he said of the game. LUNCHTIME PRACTICES The team has practised nearly every lunch hour for four years, he said. “The great thing is, we actually do enjoy it. We do it because it’s fun.” Etobicoke has a winning history on Reach for the Top. Etobicoke’s Vincent Massey Collegiate Institute won the first national Reach for the Top tournament televised in 1965.

BASEMENT FLOODS ARE ON THE RISE. DON’T LET YOUR BASEMENT BE NEXT. Together we can stop heavy rainfall, melting snow and runoff from ending up in your basement. At the City, we’re doing our part by continually updating and maintaining Toronto’s complex underground pipes, sewers p and catch basins. Now it’s your turn. Here are ar some tips to help you flood-proof your home.

Avoid risky behaviour this Victoria Day long weekend Sunnybrook wants to avoid spike in trauma patients LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com After seeing the number of trauma patients almost double during last year’s Victoria Day weekend, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is pleading with people to avoid risky behaviour this long weekend. “Essentially, this begins, this long weekend, what we call the traditional trauma season (as the unofficial kick-off to summer),” said Joanne Banfield, manager of Sunnybrook’s trauma injury prevention. “For us, even one trauma is one too many.” Over the Victoria Day weekend last year, Sunnybrook treated 21 trauma patients. That’s a 91 per cent increase over the 11 trauma patients

it cared for during the May long weekend in 2011. It’s also higher than the number of trauma cases that came through Sunnybrook in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Banfield isn’t sure why last year’s Victoria Day trauma cases almost doubled over the year before, but speculated it may be related to weather because people are out doing more when the sun’s out and temperatures are up. most patients are male The majority of trauma patients range in age from 20 to 44 and the lion’s share are males, Banfield said. The North York hospital, home to Canada’s largest trauma centre, is not advising people to avoid participating in their favourite long weekend

activities such as visiting the cottage, swimming, boating and getting jobs done around the house. But Banfield is offering tips so people don’t get injured doing them. For example, don’t speed driving to the cottage. “Better you get there late than not at all,” she said, adding traffic collisions are the No. 1 cause of traumatic injuries. Don’t risk a catastrophic neck or spinal injury by diving into unknown water. Make sure to wear a life jacket on board boats. The message Sunnybrook wants to get out in advance of the long weekend is traumatic injuries are preventable, Banfield said.

Don’t be fooled by low priced hearing aids. Will a low priced hearing aid help solve your hearing loss?

Install a backwater valve to prevent water and sewage from backing up.

Divert your downspouts away from the foundation.

For more information on flood-proofing your home, go to toronto.ca/water

Good hearing is key to understanding your world. The professionals at Toronto Hearing Services understand this. Other Hearing clinics may offer you low priced hearing aids as a means to bring you in the door. However, the customer is often left disappointed because the low quality solution does not solve the hearing loss condition or problem. When you experience hearing loss, many facets of life can become increasingly difficult.

Conversations with loved ones, meetings, telephone calls and listening to the TV may become a challenge. We understand how reassuring it is to know you can hear sounds like the doorbell, a baby crying, or the buzzing of an oven timer. We know that many subtle sounds contribute to the quality of life – sounds like birds singing, the laughter of children, music and even the gentle drumming of rain on a roof or the rustle of leaves in a breeze.

100 km/h takes a mere 3.9 seconds. With this drivetrain and bespoke sports chassis the GTI concept is capable of handling the most demanding of racetracks. Of note in the cabin are an onboard camera and a facility to allow the driver to network with a social community from the car.

A large display to the right of the main instruments shows the circuit being driven as well as times achieved. The display also communicates with other vehicles on the course and calculates details about the current status of the race in real time.

Dodge and SRT brands partner with Universal Pictures on Fast & Furious 6 The Dodge and SRT brands have partnered with Universal Pictures on the upcoming film, 'Fast & Furious 6,' opening in theaters on May 24. The partnership supports Universal's latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise with multitier marketing initiatives – including co-branded national, local and multicultural advertising cam-

paigns – events, gaming, social media and merchandising. The SRT brand supplied a 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 as the hero vehicle driven by the film's hero, Dominic (Dom) Toretto, in various chase scenes throughout the movie. Toretto also drives a 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 and a vintage 1969 Dodge Daytona. The production used 10

Charger SRT8 vehicles powered by stock 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engines. Dodge has created three new television commercials to promote "Fast & Furious 6," including national, dealer and multicultural spots. All ads feature clips from the movie interspersed with new vehicle footage.

Ford Explorer Sport:

Twin turbo power The Ford Explorer Sport, the first-ever performance version of the Explorer, joins the lineup for 2013 with added twin-turbo power, sport suspension handling, bigger brakes and with plenty of distinctive designer sporting cues inside and out. This is just the latest in a series of twists and turns that have marked Ford Explorer history since the sport ute first debuted as a Ranger pickup-based SUV back in 1990. The Explorer lineup starts simply enough with a front-wheel drive (FWD) base model ($29,999) powered by a 290 hp 3.5-litre Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V6 engine. This modern V6 is a capable engine with a fuel economy rating of 12.2/8.2L/100km (city/hwy). The base Explorer version also comes fairly well-equipped with a standard six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and a long list of included features, a content level that swells accordingly as one progresses up the trim level ladder to XLT ($36,099), Limited ($41,399) and Sport ($48,299) models. Customers exploring some of those trim levels have other choices to make as well. They can also opt for an intelligent

4WD system ($3,000) that offers a Terrain Management System operated through a console-mounted dial with four driving settings – Mud/Rut, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Normal modes with the added feature of a Hill Descent Control that regulates your speed down steep inclines. And the Explorer lineup also offers an econo engine choice, a 2.0-litre 240 hp Turbocharged Direct Injection EcoBoost four-cylinder engine ($1,000) with roughly equivalent power compared to the base V6 (less horsepower but more torque), making its muscle honestly on regular octane fuel and probably saving customers a couple of litres of gas per 100km. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost is rated at 10.4/7.0L/100km (city/highway) and is only available in FWD configuration. But tested here, however, the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport comes standard with a third engine choice in the lineup, a more powerful and trim-exclusive 3.5-litre TwinTurbocharged Direct Injection EcoBoost V6 engine that makes 365 hp at 5500 rpm and 350 lb/ft of torque at 3500 rpm. Ford claims a two second reduction in 0-100 km/h times, somewhere in the six-

24+06'& %12+'5 „ 4'#&'45 2'4 +557' „ # 6141061 %1//70+6; 0'95 27$.+%#6+10

second range, and they have aimed the Explorer Sport squarely at performance SUV rivals like the Dodge Durango R/T and Range Rover Sport. Ford has also done a fair bit of EcoBoost boasting about making that extra power with negligible impact on fuel economy, citing 13.2/8.8L/100km (city/highway) Transport Canada numbers. Balancing the extra power, the chassis has been specially reinforced, making Explorer Sport stiffer and improving its handling while bigger brakes make for shorter stopping distances and better performance while towing. Complementing the handling package, the Explorer Sport’s electric powerassisted steering (EPAS) has been tweaked for improved feel. Paddle-shifters have been added to the six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission. The Sport also comes complete with the Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System. The all-inclusive list of other standard features includes Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control, heated front row seats including a 10-way power driver’s seat with power recline and lumbar, six-way power passenger seat with recline and lumbar, a rear view camera, SYNC with MyFord Touch driver connect technology, a 12-speaker Sony Premium Audio System with HD Radio and more items, too many to list here. Outside, you’ll find more styling cues

Ford’s first-ever high-performance addition to the Explorer lineup boasts Ecoboost twin-turbo power and a full suite of top-of-the-lineup luxuries.

to differentiate it from other models in the lineup, like 20-inch painted and machined wheels. The bodywork features blacked-out headlamp and tail lamp treatments, black roof rack rails, sideview mirror skullcaps and a special liftgate appliquĂŠ. A low-gloss Sterling Gray mesh grille sets a background for ebony high-gloss bars. The black front lower fascia features a functional opening for additional cooling. And Explorer logotype in billet-like black on the leading edge of the hood adds a bold identity statement while more subtle Sport and EcoBoost badges at the rear finish the liftgate. The Explorer Sport comes in a limited

palette of metallic paint finishes - White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic, Ingot Silver Metallic and Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, as tested here. It’s a handsome vehicle, boldly styled with enough unique attributes to set it apart and catch the eye. To sum it all up, with the new 2013 Explorer Sport model, Ford offers a high-performance crossover-style SUV with three-row access and passenger utility enhanced with satisfying power and plenty of premium fittings, a worthy top-trim addition to crown the Explorer lineup. – Rob Beintema Metroland Media

Impala production underway in Oshawa Production of Chevrolet’s flagship model, the 2014 Impala, is underway at GM’s Oshawa Assembly Plant. It is built on GM’s state-of-the-art Flexible Manufacturing Line along with the Chevrolet Camaro, Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS. Seen during a recent tour of the plant by Canadian autowriters, the “Flex Line allows any combination of the four cars to come down the line. “The all-new Impala demonstrates the new direction of Chevrolet, said Kevin Wil-

liams, president and managing director of GM Canada. “Our employees in Oshawa have executed a flawless plan in bringing this iconic nameplate to life. Chevrolet’s latest MyLink radio debuts in the 2014 Impala. The in-vehicle entertainment system adds an eight-inch color display screen that is customizable. The system also adopts natural voice recognition – a first for Chevy. The 2014 Impala has several new features, including Adaptive Cruise Control

and crash-avoidance technologies like Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert. Ten standard airbags are included as well – among the most in the segment. The Flex Line is located beside what is known as the Consolidated Line that builds the Chevrolet Equinox and the older model Impala which is still sold in the United States to mostly fleet customers. Together, both lines produced 394,094 vehicles in 2012. The Flex Line puts out 1,056 vehicles

“Who needs the radio when you can listen to this? So said my 10-year-old son after I fired up the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Coupe – my tester for the week. I agree it’s an unusual observation from a youngster, but he’s probably heard me say it before, while testing some other road burner that sounded oh so good. In the R-Spec, this delightful melody was courtesy of an optional quad tip, axle-back exhaust system that delivered a baritone somewhat out of character for its 2.0-litre powerplant. Mind you, this is no ordinary four banger, as Hyundai’s DOHC mill with dual CVVT also gets a twin-scroll turbocharger that pushes horsepower to a robust 274 and torque up to 275 lb/ft, coming in at 2,000 rpm. There are no fewer than seven ways to order the Genesis Coupe – five with a turbo four and two with a 3.8-litre V6 – but the R-Spec offers arguably the most fun for the buck. The R-Spec pounds out 74 more horses than the FR-S and 124 more lb/ft, and despite weighing in excess of 300 kg more, is significantly quicker. I will also note that although this model’s V6powered sibling offers even more grunt (348 hp, 295 lb/ft), the R-Spec would be my Genesis of choice. It’s lighter, more evenly balanced, and $8,200 less (and $10K cheaper than the 3.8 GT with automatic). The Genesis Coupe lineup starts with the 2.0T ($26,499), which is also powered by the turbo four, but doesn’t get some of the performance goodies found on the R-Spec and 3.8 GT. It does, however, provide all the stuff you’d expect at this price point such as automatic climate control, power windows and locks, leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, automatic headlights and power heated mirrors. It also comes standard with a sixspeed manual gearbox, with the automatic setting you back another $1,800. The 2.0T Premium package, starting at $29,899

for the manual version, includes a sunroof, leather seats (heated in front), touch-screen navigation and an upgraded audio system. The R-Spec interior is nicely appointed with plenty of soft touch in the doors and dash, stitching in key areas and metallic accents around the cupholders, gearshift, instruments and more. Seats are upholstered in a grippy fabric with aggressive leather bolstering that is not only attractive, but really holds you in the corners. And I love the ‘old school’ analog gauges for fuel consumption, turbo boost and oil pressure. As in all Genesis Coupes, the rear passenger cabin is best suited to kids or short adults. Seats are comfortable and supportive, with more legroom than I expected. The chassis is tight, and the car feels extremely solid and composed during a turn. For track enthusiasts, there’s even a front strut camber adjustment that allows up to -1.5 degrees of negative camber for more responsive turn-in and reduced understeer. The clutch is nicely weighted and has a reasonably smooth takeup, and although the throws are a bit long, it’s a pleasure to row through the gears. In particular the lower ones are where you can really feel the torque. Punch the accelerator out of a turn, and the traction control clamps down hard to straighten the back end. Turn off this nanny, and a similar prod will get the tail wagging – in theory, of course. As for Hyundai’s $850 free-flow exhaust system, it kept a smile on my face throughout the test period. I even found myself running the R-Spec in the underground garage of my Dad’s retirement home – with both windows down – just to savour the sweet, sweet sound. And that point wasn’t lost on Hyundai’s PR rep as he pried the keys from my hand at the end of the week. – Neil Moore, Metroland Media

TTC head wants commission to take over GO Transit Andy Byford says organizations should focus on their strengths RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The man who says he wants to modernize the TTC suggested the city’s transit commission should take over

GO Transit operations from Metrolinx. Before an Empire Club of Canada audience, which included Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig and TTC Chair Karen Stintz, TTC

CEO Andy Byford outlined a corporate plan for the commission, which he said would focus on areas the TTC has been historically deficient in such as customer service. After being asked if he supported Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak’s call for the province to oversee TTC’s subway operations, Byford instead

offered his “radical” opinion the TTC should have increased responsibility – starting with the running of GO Transit currently operated by Metrolinx. “My personal view would be you get people to focus on their area of expertise,” said Byford following his prepared remarks to the audience gathered at the Royal York Hotel. “There is a bit of me that thinks what you could do is mandate Metrolinx to maintain its planning role and make a broader TTC also responsible for GO.” Byford said the province would be better served directing Metrolinx to assume all transit planning and expansion in the region and leave service operation to the TTC. “You have two separate functions, one that is there to plan and one that obsesses about the detail of service delivery,” he said. tions last year, Byford has repeatedly stated his desire to improve the TTC’s flagging reputation when it comes to customer service. During his 30-minute address to the Empire Club, the British expatriate who came from Sydney, Australia, to run the TTC said his first year on the job was about tackling the “basics”, which included establishing a customer charter, naming group station managers, improving station cleanliness and setting transparent performance benchmarks. The next step, Byford said, is to create a corporate “vision 27/04/12 9:44 AM Page 1 statement” for the first time in the TTC’s history, which

will set the commission’s future priorities. “Our new plan sets out in detail what the TTC must achieve between now and 2017,” he said. “It is built around seven strategic objectives, the sum of which deliver our vision of a transit system that makes Toronto proud.” He held up a draft of the document, which has not yet been released but will focus on “game changing” improvements to safety, customer service, employee performance, infrastructure management, expansion, financial stability and the TTC’s reputation. He also promised new TTC employee uniforms under design will be ready by next year. “There will be new trains, new buses, new streetcars, a smart card, a smart new uniform and smart people,” he said.

ranked ballot system The report also contemplates a ranked ballot system, where voters would choose their top three choices for an office rather than just one. The results would be tallied until one candidate had more than 50 per cent of the votes. None of it made it through the six-member committee. Councillors Paul Ainslie, Mary Fragedakis, and Pam McConnell supported most of the amendments and recommendations; Councillors Doug Ford, Vincent Crisanti and Giorgio Mammoliti voted no. Under the rules of procedure, that means that the matter goes to council next month without recommendation. Social activist Dave Meslin

of RaBIT (Ranked Ballot Initiative) said the vote just meant the matter will go to council. Meslin said that he believes there are 23 councillors who’ll support proceeding with at least that and possibly other electoral initiatives. “The truth is the system we’re proposing gives more power to the voters to take power away from politicians,” said Meslin. “So there might be many reasons why politicians wouldn’t support this.” Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, who chairs the committee, confirmed that the fight over electoral reform would be fought on the floor of council. He said that having fought two elections, the reforms made sense – particularly enfranchising new Canadians who have permanent resident status but not full citizenship.

Toronto voters may find themselves electing their councillors and mayor in a different way in future elections — but it will be up to Toronto council to decide how those changes will go, after the city’s government management committee was unable to recommend a single reform. The committee met Monday to hear from the public and consider a number of ways to make the electoral system more democratic. The city clerk’s department suggested a range of possible changes and improvements. Voting days could be moved to Saturdays or Sundays, to make it easier for workers to vote and permanent residents who currently have no voting rights could be permitted to vote in municipal elections. Internet voting for voters with disabilities was another

option put forward, as was communications improvements to the city’s website.

Don Bosco students aim to Stop the Stigma Students at Etobicoke’s Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School are set to learn all about mental health issues and illnesses during the school’s Stop the Stigma Week this coming week. The ultimate goal of the May 16 to 24 event, organizers said, is “to eradicate bullying and foster a learning environment that is defined

by acceptance and inclusion.” To those ends, a number of students activities have been planned to aid in the development of a greater awareness of mental health issues and a deeper understanding and appreciation for the interpersonal relationships students have with their family, friends
