Farewell bid to iconic motel strip Beach Motel the last to come down, condos set for property TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The demolition swings of a giant crane yesterday morning marked the end of an era along the former Lakeshore Motel Strip. The Beach Motel crumbled to the ground, the last of the motels to make way for the revitalization along Lake Shore Boulevard West. In its place are plans to build one of Canada’s tallest waterfront condominium communities, two towers at 66 and 44 storeys respectively. With names like the Cruise Motel, the Rainbow and the Sunnyside, the former motels between the Humber River and Park Lawn Road drew vacationers on road trips in the 1950s and ’60s when Ford Thunderbirds were big and Elvis Presley played on the radio. In those days, Lake Shore Boulevard known then as Hwy. 2, was the main thoroughfare in and out of the city. The Gardiner Expressway didn’t redirect traffic off Hwy. 2 until 1966, city records indicate. From the ’70s onward, chain hotels grew in popularity and drew business away from the motels, some of which began to fall into disrepair. Others remained family-oriented and became film sets for Hollywood films and television shows. Area Councillor Mark Grimes smashed some bricks clawed by the crane to hold onto a piece of Lakeshore history for posterity. “It’s an exciting day, but a sad day

in the same breath,” Grimes said in an interview. “It’s a very important part of our history. You see the interest generated today with the community and the media (present for the demolition). “This is the last piece (of development) on the motel strip that will bookend Palace Pier and Palace Place (the two most easterly condos).”

The Young family owned the iconic Beach Motel since 1934. Sally Young ran the motel for decades. Attempts to contact Sally’s daughter Kathy Young for comment on the historic moment was unsuccessful prior to Guardian deadline Thursday. Developer Empire Communities’ future condo project, titled Eau du

Soleil, is the last of seven condo applications that form part of the city’s Motel Strip precinct plan, Grimes said. “We hear loud and clear concerns about density,” Grimes said in response to the question whether the area’s condo density was overwhelming local infrastructure such >>>LANDMARK, page 7

This year’s Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive at the Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is about more than just finding forever homes for the 60 cats and 10 dogs they currently shelter. “This is Christmas time: a time to share and give back to whatever has provided you with happiness and love throughout the year – and pets are that for a lot of people,” said Jennie Grado, a member of EHS’s board of directors. “The Iams Home 4 the Holidays program talks about donating to your shelter, it talks about volunteering, it talks about finding out what your shelter’s wish list is. And that overall messaging really aligns with what we do as a volunteer operation.” Now in its 14th year, the Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign remains focused on raising awareness of pet adoption, while also ensuring proper nutrition for more homeless pets this year. To participate, animal lovers can lend a hand in several different ways: by adopting a homeless animal; by volunteering to care for the animals at your local shelter; or by donating through Bags 4 Bowls, through which Iams will donate one bowl of food to participating animal organizations >>>ADOPTION, page 25

Grandmother makes a run for liver research Lace Up for Liver set to take place in Jamaica TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A colleague’s serendipitous email inspired Liz Magera to marry a personal goal with the potential to save Canadian lives. In February, she celebrated her 60th birthday with a goal to run her first 10K. In July, she had just completed that run when a co-worker’s email informed her of the Canadian Liver Foundation’s Lace Up for Liver pilot run Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K on Dec. 1 in Negril, Jamaica in support of Canadian liver research. “Maybe this will be your next run,” my colleague said in her email,” Magera recalled. She had done one run. A run in Jamaica would be beyond her wildest dreams. “She didn’t know about Jack (her grandson). I told her my grandson has a liver disease...” “It just took over my emotions. Could I possibly do this?” Magera did do it. She signed up for the run. Currently, she is $55 shy of fundraising $10,000 for the Lace Up for Liver run.

Initially, Magera’s email to 136 friends and family requesting support has spread to contacts emailing contacts, friends telling friends on Facebook. Her Kingsway Running Room sent an email on her behalf to its network. To date, the Lace Up for Liver team of seven runners has raised approximately $30,000, Marsha Doucette, Canadian Liver Foundation spokesperson and Greater Toronto Area regional co-ordinator reported. Doucette is running the 10K with Magera. Doucette’s father, Richard, is walking the 10K after receiving a liver transplant in May 2011 following liver cancer. Magera’s grandson, Jack, was born with biliary atresia, a relatively rare disease in which the bile duct outside the liver that carries bile from the liver to the small intestine is damaged. It affects every 10,000 to 20,000 infants shortly after birth, the Canadian Liver Foundation reports. “I didn’t believe the doctor. How can a child be born with liver disease?” Magera recalled Friday, in the living room of her central Etobicoke home with husband, Emil, who is walking the 10K in Negril. “We spent literally six weeks in hospital in and out every day before Jack’s surgery. When Jack had the Kasai procedure, doctors had only performed the procedure for five years.” Jack responded well to the procedure, named after the surgeon who

developed it. The operation removes the damaged bile duct outside the liver and replaces it with a new drainage system made from a piece of small intestine. It fully alleviates jaundice, but will not reverse liver damage that has already occurred or prevent any low-grade ongoing damage. “The doctors did say there is no guarantee,” Emil added. “Somewhere down the road, Jack may possibly need a liver transplant.”

If Jack develops a fever, he is admitted to McMaster Children’s Hospital where his specialist works, Magera said. High fever sparks fear of infection in his liver. Today, Jack is an energetic fiveyear-old with a four-year-old brother, Christopher. Two weeks ago, the Make-a-Wish Foundation granted Jack’s wish — to visit LEGOLAND in San Diego, Calif. with his family and his two grandmothers. His specialist submitted Jack’s name to the

foundation, which grants wishes to terminally ill children and children living with a lifelong illness. “Jack is a bright kid,” Emil said of his grandson. “He loves building and playing with Lego. Lego is his life right now. He’s so excited (about the trip).” Doucette said there are plans to expand the Lace Up for Liver runs next year to two, with one repeating in Negril, the other possibly in California, Hawaii or Europe. “People can sign up who are just learning to run or who are marathoners,” said Doucette, a kinesiology university graduate and former personal trainer. Many Canadians live without the knowledge they have a liver disease, Doucette added. “Most people don’t know they have any form of liver disease until it’s too late,” she said. “For the majority of liver disease, if you catch it early on, you can reverse the effects. It’s the only internal organ that can regenerate itself. We need to raise money to fund cures, early diagnoses and vaccines, like (the vaccine we already have) for hepatitis A and B.” Meanwhile, Magera continues to raise funds. She said she personally thanks every donor by letter or email. To read more about the personal stories of the Lace Up for Liver team visit www.laceupforliver.ca or click “sponsor me” to donate to Magera or the team.

Honour those who died in War of 1812 by wearing red geranium

The Etobicoke Guardian is published every Thursday and Friday at 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON M2H 0A2, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Toronto’s many libraries about more than books W

ith a number of Toronto public libraries undergoing or having completed major renovations recently, there is a buzz around many of these age-old institutions.

Looking into these revitalization projects, it’s an opportunity to revitalize the concept of libraries as a com- our view munity hub where visiting patrons are able to get more Libraries offer involved in their neighbourhood through various activi- a variety ties now offered at their local of services library. Libraries should no longer be perceived as just a place to borrow books. Brentwood library in Etobicoke, for example, reopened earlier this month after an $8 million renovation and expansion project, which now includes a KidsStop Interactive Early Literacy Centre, a new computer learning centre, and a community room that may be rented by community groups or used as a quiet study area. The Fairview branch in North York has just begun a similar revitalization project last month and a brand new Scarborough Centre branch is expected to open in 2014 with such proposed services as bookable meeting rooms, an outdoor reading garden, public plaza, and zones for patrons of all ages. It’s encouraging to see libraries across the city adapt to remain an integral part of the community. In more diverse neighbourhoods, popular branches like North York Central and Agincourt both offer English Conversation Circle programs for those with landed immigrant or refugee status. The Albion branch in Etobicoke continues to reach out to kids with regularly scheduled reading programs. Prominent authors often drop by to discuss their latest novel with interested readers. “We really find people like coming to the library,” said Anne Bailey, Toronto Public Library director of branch libraries. “Even business people with laptops, we have resources, databases they can access with a library card. I think we have something for everybody.” We encourage residents to use the library’s resources to help justify any further spending and gauge where any additional funding, if any, would be best spent as the Toronto Public Library Board looks for a budget increase of 0.4 per cent next year. It’s easy to find your local library by visiting our website at www.etobicokeguardian.com and select a community listing on the right side of the page, then scroll down to libraries. Reader remembers first summer job at Mr. Christie’s To the editor: Re: ‘Labour council slams Mr. Christie’s closure,’ News, Nov. 8 Sad to see Mr. Christie’s Bakery close. In the mid-’60s, my first summer student job was packing cookies on ‘assembly line one’ (i.e., Chips Ahoy, Coffee Breaks, Fig Newtons) at the Christie Bakery. Back then, the bakery provided many persons displaced by the Second World War with work. Then, as today, many of those persons had degrees from their home countries but could find no other work. Nevertheless,

they were happy to have a job at all and they worked hard to provide better lives for their children. My father and a number of his friends were among that contingent of Christie’s employees. Years later, after my mother had passed away, my father would invite me to accompany him to the Quarter Century Club and Christmas dinners and I was touched by presentations which showed happy company picnics down on the lakeshore near Sunnyside Park. My first summer of working on an assembly line spurred me to get a university educa-

tion. Although I was happy to have a summer job and I got great work experience, working on an assembly line was excruciatingly boring, and I knew I did not want to do that for the rest of my working life. I’ll be very sad to see the Mr. Christie’s Bakery go. It has provided employment for so many years and has been an important part of the Etobicoke history and landscape. I’ll also miss the heavenly scent of baked goods wafting in the breeze. Mara Glebovs

Take time to be seen on city streets I was sorry to hear the sad statistic regarding accidents between pedestrians and vehicular traffic. It does not come as any real surprise, though, given the current lower light levels and people’s insistence on wearing dark colours. It is time pedestrians check to see if they are in the clear before they start to cross the road.

When the city changed the street lighting from the oldstyle bright white years ago, the streets have become naturally gloomier than before. This coupled with the rain and the headlight glare from oncoming vehicles has lead to a proper mess on our rushhour streets for both pedestrians and drivers alike. Cyclists must also do their part to see and be seen. They

must have a decent front and rear light along with reflectors on their bikes because without them they cannot be seen in time. They could also try using their brakes more often. This is common sense to most people. I just wish that it was common sense to all of us. Chris Belfontaine

To the editor: Remembrance Day 2012 has come and gone. We give thanks to those who fought in the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and peace keeping for our rights and freedom. We honour them and remember those who gave the supreme sacrifice by wearing a red poppy. The fight for our rights and freedom did not start with the Boer War. In 1812, Canadian volunteers and British soldiers joined forces to fight an invading army. At times, badly outnumbered, they fought bravely and many paid the supreme sacrifice for our rights and freedom. After the battle of Lundy’s Lane (the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812), it was noticed by the locals that red geraniums were growing over the battlefield. When the War of 1812 ended, the citizens started to wear red geraniums to honour those who fought for their rights and freedom and to remember the ones who gave their lives. As time went on, the tradition passed out of existence. The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is currently being commemorated. In 2013, when we observe Remembrance Day, besides wearing a red poppy, let us bring back the tradition of wearing a red geranium to honour those who fought for our rights and freedom 200 years ago. TTC is also suggesting families attending the parade purchase a day pass for $10.50, which provides unlimited travel on all vehicles for up to six people. GO also announced that beginning on Thursday, Nov. 15, it will guarantee refunds to riders whose train rides are late by at least 15 minutes, provided the delay was not due to weather or emergency reasons. Paul Golini Jr., vice-president of Empire Communities walks through one of the old rooms at the Beach Motel, prior to demolition yesterday. The company is to develop condominiums on the site.

three Beyond the Sea condos just down the street on the northwest corner of Park Lawn and Lake Shore. Its tallest building is 44 storeys. That is the same height of the shorter of the two condos Empire plans to build on the Beach Motel site. “We love the area. It’s one of those oases in the city,” Golini said in an interview, as the orange crane continued to chew at what had been the Beach Motel office. “Unless you live in Etobicoke, you don’t know this area exists. The Humber trail has people walking, running, rollerblading. It’s a great area to live in, not just to bike through. Plus, it’s 10 minutes to downtown when there isn’t traffic.” Empire’s Eau du Soleil plans are currently being circulated within the city’s planning department, Golini said. Hu m b e r B a y S h o re s Condominium Association vice-president Don Henderson was on-site for the historic demolition.

Henderson said the association’s members were “intrinsically involved” in the planning of the area. Between 6,000 and 7,000 residents live in the Humber Bay Shores condominiums: Palace Place, Bal Harbour, Marina del Rey, Nevis, Explorer, Grand Harbour, Grenadier Landing, Hear thstone, Newport Beach, Palace Pier, Players Club, Voyager I and II and Waterford. Once full condo build-out is complete with Empire’s Eau du Soleil project, Henderson estimated approximately 24,000 residents will live in condos in the area. “That’s a lot of people for only one north-south road, which is Park Lawn, unless you double back to Royal York Road or head (east) into Parkdale,” Henderson said in an interview. “Traffic, transportation, density and height are all issues we’re concerned about. We don’t want all the condos to be a barrier to the lake.”

I landed the deal buddy. He signed the contract and I just couldn’t wait to message you about it. VICTORIOUS: The Don Bosco Eagles senior boys football team defeated the Northern Red Knights yesterday afternoon 31-0, advancing them to the Metro Bowl final four. Don Bosco, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) champs, faced the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) champs Northern Secondary School at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough. The Metro Bowl semi-final game is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 22 at Etobicoke’s Centennial Stadium. Above, Tyrane Miller carries the ball for the Don Bosco Eagles in the Metro Bowl quarter-final game. And she’s very gentle.” While getting animals like Rigby, Murphy and Bailey adopted out to loving homes remains the primary goal for EHS, Grado said EHS’s volun-
