CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When it comes to the racetrack, Alex Tagliani isn’t afraid of taking risks – but it’s a whole different story when the Montreal-born NASCAR driver, who is deathly

allergic to nuts, sits down to a meal.

“People look at me and when they see what I do, they think racing is more dangerous than running around without an EpiPen, but I can tell you it’s the other way around,”

Tagliani, a spokesperson for Anaphylaxis Canada, told students at Etobicoke’s Holy Angels Catholic School during a visit.

“I’ve been involved in some crashes throughout my career and, touch wood, I’ve never even had a broken bone. But

many times now in my life I have had scary (allergic reactions) that were caused by just eating something I was allergic to.”

EGH begins $250M redevelopment The 42-year-old building is in need of new infrastructure

Early stage projects to upgrade the building’s mechanics to serve the future, four-storey wing include a new boiler, a new chiller plant and new generator.

A life safety conduits project will start late summer and build out to the edge of the existing building fire alarm systems, nurse call, communication and computer systems.

Etobicoke General was built in 1972. In the time since, the community, medical technology and the space needed to treat patients has grown beyond the hospital’s walls.

Infrastructure has aged.

“It’s a 42-year-old building. The way medicine is delivered today, the spaces just aren’t big enough,” said Ann Ford, Osler’s vice-president of development and information technology. “The ER was built for 35,000 to 40,000 patients. We’re seeing more than 70,000 patients now. We just don’t have the space.

The ICU is very cramped.

“With the technology, lots of computers, computerized reporting. We don’t even have space on the walls to put a computer monitor. The other reason is the infrastructure itself. It was time to replace it.”

William Osler Health System operates Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals and is Ontario’s largest community hospital.

Etobicoke General’s emergency department and its Critical Care and Intensive Care Units will move to the future 235,000 square foot building.

It will also house its fracture clinic, maternity and newborn care, day surgery, inpatient dialysis services,

ambulatory clinics and new outpatient oncology facility.

Expanded services will include specialized physiotherapy and occupational therapy services for seniors, as well as improved access to outpatient clinics and services, including mental health services.

Osler’s citizen advisory council is eagerly awaiting the redevelopment.

“The cramped space was a challenge,” said Arun Sharma, a sixyear member of the council, who also sits on the patient experience committee.

“Now we’re feeling a sigh of relief in the last couple of years that the revitalized space will better serve the needs of the community. The population has grown since the hospital was built. The hospital is adding space, new equipment and better facilities.”

Next is a Request for Qualification for a consortium to plan, design and

build the tower, to be released this fall. Next spring, a short list of three proponents will bid on the Request for Proposal to do the build.

Last year, Osler’s volunteer association pledged $3 million to Etobicoke General’s redevelopment.

Extended hours Brentwood library will have extended hours thanks to city council’s recent approval of Toronto Public Library’s 2014 operating budget.

he door to a very unique opportunity opened this week for some 20,000 people across Ontario with the launch of the volunteer recruitment campaign for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games. It’s a great chance for residents young and old to build organizational and leadership skills that could lead to job opportunities.

It’s also beneficial to the city, to be able to develop an engaged, experienced volunteer contingent that not only contributes to the strength of our community today, but one that develops a legacy of volunteerism that can be called upon for future events – at the local level or again on the world stage.

For these Games, there will be volunteer positions across 16 municipalities in all our view aspects of the events, from antidoping and medical services, Residents can protocol and the Games-time service, to ticketing, venue contribute to news management and ushers at strength of city events. Positions start as early as September.

If you have the time, skills and passion to spare, it’s an opportunity seriously worth considering. It’s a chance to be a part of an exciting, world-class event, to meet new people and learn new skills. But more than that, it’s a chance to directly contribute to the strength of our city and the bonds between our communities.

When athletes arrive from the Caribbean and Central, South and North America next year, all eyes will be on our city and the collective force of ambassadors that will be welcoming them. Our communities are already rich with selfless volunteers who work tirelessly at the grassroots level, but this is Toronto’s chance to display our pride for all the world to see.

As well, the province will be granting each volunteer at the Games a volunteer certificate, and the Ontario Student Assistance Program is offering benefits to make it easier for college and university students to get involved. Those with additional language skills are especially encouraged to apply.

Saäd Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games, likens volunteers to the “backbone” of the event and said they will be behind every amazing moment we witness next year.

The power of volunteerism cannot be understated, whether it’s on a small-scale locally or helping to host the largest sporting event Toronto’s ever seen.

Any mayoral race ‘blood bath’ will be self-inflicted by Rob Ford M

ayor Rob Ford sought to set the tone early on in the 2014 mayoral race, when he predicted it would be a “blood bath.”

That’s a crude metaphor for what this very Canadian race is turning into. In these early months, it seems that candidates for the top job are struggling to put as kind and civil a face on the proceedings as they can. It is almost well-mannered.

Opponents of Ford have, it’s true, called out the mayor on his bad behaviour and other obvious shortcomings – but it seemed like they had to be goaded into doing so after a notable lack of carnage in the first, televised mayoral debate. Most of the real bloodletting has come from the sidelines: those ‘No Ford Nation’ Rob Ford parody signs showing up

on streets around the city, or that independently produced YouTube attack ad on John Tory, drawing ties between him and the Fords, reminding women voters of his advice on golf and success in business, and his well-compensated work with Rogers.

From the candidates themselves, the aggression remains generally passive.

Last week, Tory emerged with a code of conduct he’d follow as mayor – pledging to show up on time, not make enemies’ lists, not consort with criminals and obey the law – which if boiled down amounts to a sniping assertion to behave nothing like Ford.

Olivia Chow, meanwhile,

has stuck to the line that the mayor’s a bad example for her grandchildren, then gone on to talk about child care, housing, business taxes, and public transit.

Karen Stintz largely avoids the issue, and David Soknacki favours a lighter-touch version of those clever street-sign and YouTube snipes, combined with more direct questioning of the way in which the mayor’s using his office resources during the election period.

One could almost anticipate a relatively genteel run up to the Oct. 27 election, were it not for the fact that all this messy characterbased stuff keeps coming up.

On the weekend, Mayor Ford took budget chief Frank Di Giorgio on a very bad boy’s night out at the Air Canada Centre. While

there, the mayor threw a tantrum, fell into what sounds like a selfie-drivenmosh-pit of fans, and ditched poor Di Giorgio for a taxi full of revellers and a night on the town.

Di Giorgio was left to mope off to his ward, where a small gathering of constituents were waiting for a visit from their mayor.

At the end of it, even Di Giorgio – among the last of Ford’s supporters on council – admitted he had to rethink his loyalties.

If the mayor keeps this kind of behaviour up, his prediction will come true, but not as he thinks.

Whatever ‘blood bath’ comes of it, the wounds will be the mayor’s and they’ll be entirely self-inflicted.

But Ontario is one of a few provinces that offer a Legislative Page Program, where grades 7 and 8 students serve as messengers, performing administrative and ceremonial tasks on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

Etobicoke’s Divya Dey, a 13-year-old from Bloorlea Middle School, is nearing the end of a five-week stint at Queen’s Park. She is one of about 140 across the province who are accepted for either the spring or fall parliamentary sessions each year, divided among the 107 ridings in the legislature.

“We are so proud of her achievement and that she is able use this experience for her future,” said Pia Dey, her mother.

Etobicoke student Divya Dey is a Queen’s Park page.

Divya was motivated to apply after hearing from a friend who had completed a term of duty as a page. The selection process requires an 80 per cent average and a 750-word essay showing a thorough involvement in extracurricular activities.

Divya has run the Bloorlea’s Vow of Silence campaign (raising $700 for child labour awareness), is part of the school’s Equity Club, Robotics Team, Honour Roll and Principal’s List and has earn her lifeguard credentials and winning medals in Tae Kwon-Do. Divya also participates in Indian Sunday school and classical dance,

Opening doors to adult education ‘Transformative’ eight-month program at the University of Toronto helps adults without formal qualifications get into university

It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for those who thought a university education was beyond their grasp.

The full-time, eight-month access to university program is designed for adults 19 and older who didn’t finish high school due to financial problems, family difficulties or other circumstances.

Administrators actively encourage applications from members of the Native Canadian, African-Canadian and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer (LBGTQ) communities, solesupport parents, people with disabilities and individuals from working class backgrounds of all ethnicities.

But anyone may apply.

“Eight months to change your life” is what Lauriann Wade calls the program.

Wade should know.

In 2008, the Mimico resident took the helm of the university’s transitional program that creates 15 to 20 graduates a year only three years after she herself graduated from it.

At 31, Wade had just returned to Toronto with her two-year-old son after living in California. Previously, she had worked as a receptionist, and conducted edutainment workshops on values and morals using hip hop music at Toronto public schools.

She applied, was accepted to the program, and went on to become that year’s valedictorian.

“It completely changed the trajectory of my life,” Wade, now 40, said in her sun-filled, second-storey office.

intelligence, my potential. It made me more confident.

I’d think, ‘I can do it.’ I was tenacious. I was so happy for this opportunity. Their doors were always open.

I’d write a paper for one professor and show it to all the other professors. There is something really special about this place. The professors are dedicated to your growth.”

Ten U of T professors are designated to the program.

In just four-and-a-half years, Wade had completed her U of T undergraduate degree in sociology and religious studies, and a Masters in sociology and equity studies at the Ontario Institute

Her registrar’s door is always open because many transitional students have encountered closed doors in their lives, she said.

The breadth of students and their life experiences is enriching, Wade believes.

“Oppression and circumstances that disrupt are not just for one racialized group.

We focus on that intersection of oppression. Some people come here, they may be homophobic, for example.

That’s something they have to work through as they’re here. Then they become friends with people they never thought they would. It’s

a great exercise in breaking down barriers of oppression and prejudice.”

Students pay $6,182.44 for the eight-month program, which entitles them to all the benefits of being a U of T student, including health and dental benefits, a student card, the ability to play on the university’s varsity teams and participate in university groups, and to attend classes throughout the university.

Upon graduation from university, program students in need receive a $5,000 to $7,000 grant.

The program’s roots date back to 1970 in the black community, and emerged out

of two community summer programs in 1969 and ’70, which served to prepare a small number of students for entry to York University.

U of T’s Innis College became its base from 1970-76, when it became a separate division within the university.

Shane Wallace, the program’s administrative assistant who is taking his Masters in sociology and social justice at OISE, called the program “transformative”.

“Students come to us from all different backgrounds.

Some have had negative experiences in the school system. Some are immigrants who left their home countries with no transcripts so they can’t apply to university. We represent a real need.”

Wade related many graduate success stories.

This year, a 65-year-old man is a program student.

Previously, a nun graduated from the program.

Many program graduates call or email Wade with updates on their lives.

There’s an email message from Ashley Sanders in Wade’s inbox.

Today, Sanders is living in British Columbia in the fifth year of her PhD studying cell and developmental biology. She won the Alexander Graham Bell Canadian Graduate Scholarship, and Three-Year Canadian Vanier Scholarship.

Sanders came to the U of T program with a Grade 9 education. She took courses to qualify for the program, from which she graduated in 2004 as a national scholar.

“So m a n y g ra d u a t e s have gone on to do brilliant things,” Wade said.

“Lots become social workers, teachers, administrators, nurses, or go on to medical school or law school.”

While the program, which is being run in partnership with Anaphylaxis Canada, is designed to promote safety first and foremost, it also encourages kids with food allergies to not let their dietary restrictions hold them back from pursuing their dreams.

“Working with someone like Alex who has food allergies himself, we’re spreading the awareness message that it’s a serious condition and should be taken seriously, but it’s also very manageable and with the right resources and support, people with allergies can do whatever they want to do,” said Beatrice Povolo, director of marketing and communications for

Students are encouraged to create designs featuring positive food allergy awareness messages. The winning designs will then be featured on Tagliani’s racing helmet and car during this year’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races as a way of raising awareness about the seriousness of food allergies.

For Tagliani, whose busy,

on-the-road lifestyle on the racing circuit doesn’t often allow for strict dietary routines, there have been several close calls – in airplanes, and at airports, restaurants and hotels across the continent and beyond.

Case in point: while out at a team dinner a couple of years ago, Tagliani ordered cheesecake after being assured by

the server that there were no nuts in the graham cracker crust or anywhere else in the dessert.

“But the waitress didn’t realize the top of the cheesecake had a thin almond paste on it, because it was covered with a raspberry coulis. The concentration of the almonds was so high, my reaction was severe. I accidentally left my EpiPen in my rental car, so I ran out in panic mode to get it,” he recalled, noting that the effort of the frantic sprint left him breathless and nearly unconscious.

“Luckily, the paramedics came in nick of time and saved my life in the parking lot.”

Each and every such incident, Tagliani said, has served as a reminder that you just can’t be too careful when it comes to food allergies: “That’s why I never go anywhere without my EpiPen.” For Beth McDermott, whose 10-year-old son William is allergic to nuts,

eggs and milk, having someone like Tagliani come to speak with him and his classmates at Holy Angels was encouraging.

“I think it’s good for the kids to see someone like Alex is able to do something that’s fun and exciting, even though he has certain limitations,” she said. “To see that food allergies don’t limit him at all is inspiring.” don’t let it stop you In a one-on-one chat following the school presentation, Tagliani offered William some personalized words of wisdom to live by: “Live like you don’t have an allergy – that’s what I’m preaching for,” he said. “Of course I take the proper precautions and I don’t risk going anywhere without my EpiPen, but for me, I just live my life every day like I don’t have an allergy.”

4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions.

What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

The posted speed limit on both streets is 40 kilometres per hour. Stop signs exist on Bankfield both northbound and southbound at Alhart.

The repair work, which is part of a decade-long rehabilitation of the crumbling expressway to cost the city around $500 million, will result in lane closures and traffic headaches for motorists, said public works chair Denzil Minnan-Wong.

“We’re hopeful we can have some remedies to make traffic smoother, such as putting signs up and things like that, but really it’s a capacity problem,” said Minnan-Wong Monday during an announcement of the city’s road work priorities for the year.

“Fundamentally the work does need to get done.”

Three projects are planned following the weekend of April 25, when the expressway is closed for regular maintenance. These are: n Deck replacement of the elevated portion of the Gardiner from the CNE to Grand Magazine Street along with the planned demolition of the Garrison Road bridge located below the expressway east of Strachan Avenue, which will close off a lane of traffic in both directions until December 2016, though the restriction will be lifted during the 2015 Pan Am Games. n Structural repairs to three br idges between Humber River and Parklawn Avenue with one lane closed eastbound until the work is completed in December. n Median replacement from Ellis to Dufferin roads resulting in lane closures in each direction until August.

Also planned is rehabilitation work from York Street to Jarvis Street to last until May, as well as temporary repairs between York and Dan Leckie Way, which should be completed by the end of the month.

Additional work from Jarvis to the Don Roadway is planned for completion by the end of the year.

Because the Gardiner work will be disruptive, the city’s head of transportation services Stephen Buckley said efforts would be made to accelerate the pace of the repairs, from asking construction crews to work for 12 hours a day for six days a week.

“We know these projects will require lanes taken out for weeks on end, so we’re looking for innovative ways to accelerate the work,” Buckley said. $215M in other repairs The Gardiner work is in addition to $215 million in road improvements taking place at 14 locations, many of which are major routes.

But even with the money allocated for repairs the city is still facing a backlog in work, which Minnan-Wong attributed to a lack of funding.

He said he would introduce a motion at the public works and infrastructure committee

meeting Wednesday to review road work performance and see how to speed up the work to save construction costs and minimize impacts on road users.

“We need to take a proactive approach to road repair by looking at modern technologies, remedies and solutions so that these issues don’t appear as often,” he said. “It’s only going to get worse, I think we’ve got to look at new approaches that are offered in other places and cities.”

On average the city fills 200,000 potholes per year.

This year alone 125,000 potholes have been repaired already, and Minnan-Wong said the city is estimating there are double the amount of repairs required compared to 2013.

“We’ve got 35 to 40 work crews working extra hours to respond to the difficult year we’ve had,” he said.

The TTC has appointed a new manager to help deal with surface transit operation. Rick Leary is the TTC’s new chief service officer, taking over from Chris Upfold, who held the position on an interim basis.

Leary will be responsible for, among other things, managing Toronto’s bus and streetcar and Wheel-Trans fleets, said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross. One of Leary’s top priorities will be to improve punctuality and reliability of streetcar service, which according to a recent TTC survey is an increasing source of dissatisfaction among riders. Leary officially assumes his new role May 5.

Students from the University of Toronto are calling for better transit in an effort reduce excessive commute times in the Greater Toronto Area.

Information released by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance indicates 68 per cent of first-year U of T students rely on transit to get to campus.

A quarter of those students average 16 hours per week on their commutes, well above the regional average of nearly seven hours, which itself is one of the highest totals in North America.

At a debate last week at the university, co-hosted by CivicAction, students shared tales of their long commutes and called on all provincial parties to make improving transit a central objective of reducing traffic congestion.

Richview Baptist hosts fundraising garage sale for Nicaragua trip Over the last eight years, missionaries from Etobicoke’s Richview Baptist Church have travelled to Nicaragua each summer where they’ve drilled a well, repaired two other wells, constructed four chlorinators, built three homes, plus provided professional dental services to villagers.

That they’ve been able to leave such a lasting footprint in a poor Nicaraguan village is a testament to the support they’ve received from the church community at Richview

Baptist – namely through widespread involvement in the church’s annual fundraising garage sale, said youth group leader Paul Payne.

“Eight years ago we embarked on a journey – and it’s been a lifechanging experience to say the least. Looking back, our projects have changed thousands of lives in Central America and in our local community, and changed our youth’s perspective on life,” Payne said.

“These trips have been supported

by our local community through their generous donations, which have allowed us to purchase our flights into Nicaragua and enabled us to support our clean water and home projects.”

Fundraising garage sale This year’s fundraising garage sale is set to take place Saturday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Richview Baptist Church.

In addition to the sale itself, the

rain-or-shine event will also feature a silent auction, barbecue, raffle, and live reptile show.

Most of the proceeds from the sale will go toward this year’s upcoming trip to San Jose, Nicaragua from Aug. 16 to 23, in which 22 church team members plan to repeat last year’s successes by: constructing another new home; repairing two more broken wells; bringing another dental team along with them to perform extractions, fillings and cleanings; and visiting with and

bringing food to expectant mothers in the hospital once again.

Richview Baptist is looking for gently used items including clothing, dishes, housewares and furniture as well as entertainment auction items.

Those wishing to donate sale items are invited to drop them off at the church Tuesdays from 7 to 7:30 p.m. or Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. until May 10.

RECOGNIZING OUR PROGRESS

Latest Redevelopment News On March 26, the Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care visited Etobicoke General to recognize the tremendous progress the hospital is making in its redevelopment journey – particularly on its plans to construct a new four-storey wing.

Dr. Shafiq Qaadri, MPP Etobicoke North and Donna Cansfield, MPP Etobicoke Centre were also on hand to speak with staff, physicians, volunteers and supporters about the importance of the community hospital for the residents who rely on it for care.

Over the past three years, the Ministry has provided funding to support numerous projects including renovation of the Laboratory, Day Surgery and Cardiac Diagnostic areas of the hospital. Priority infrastructure upgrades to electrical systems and water mains have also been completed, which is helping to prepare the existing building to support the expansion.

Providing exemplary care in the EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT Like all Ontario hospitals, Osler continues to deal with pressures in its emergency departments. More than 200,000 people visited Osler for emergency care last year. Even with the high volume of patients in its emergency department, Etobicoke General continues to have wait times that are the same or better than peer hospitals.

Osler has taken a number of steps to improve the flow of patients through its emergency departments and to improve the experience of its patients. Osler has added more emergency department physician hours to help respond to the need for care and

Osler has announced that Stantec Architecture will lead the planning and design of the new fourstorey wing. Preparations for the next phase of work are also underway to get the facility ready for construction of the new wing. This work includes: • Site works to facilitate a temporary hospital entrance while the new entrance is under construction; • Utility upgrades for electrical, domestic water and fire mains; and • Replacement of existing chillers and the installation of a new steam boiler

HELPING PATIENTS maximize their potential to effectively manage length of stay. At Etobicoke General, Osler provides double coverage (at the very least) from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., as compared with hospitals of a similar size. During peak times, there are three physicians in the emergency department.

Osler’s Medical Admission Unit has helped make strong improvements in patient flow in the emergency department – enabling staff to transfer patients into an area where they can be treated and closely monitored, while making room for more patients in treatment areas.

Osler recently opened a specialized geriatric rehabilitation unit at Etobicoke General called the Post Acute Short Stay Unit (PASSU). The new 14 bed unit will have a “home first” philosophy; helping medically frail patients (with a focus on seniors) transition to an environment that best suits their needs.

The opening of this unit is a key part of Osler’s continued focus on expanding care in areas that are experiencing high demand, as well as exploring new ways to better meet the needs of its community.

On March 25, Osler hosted the awards ceremony for its first national student app contest, “Kiss My App”, where Atinderpal Singh Multani was named the winner of a $10,000 grand prize and unveiled his winning app. The app’s approach to wayfinding and diagnostic imaging prep will help to provide better, more personalized service for patients and families.

These dedicated people – who hear the complaints and the compliments – have chosen to express their endorsement of, and belief in, Osler through a transformational $3 million pledge.

Raj Narula, C.A., member of Osler Foundation’s Finance Committee and a Strategic Advisor for Etobicoke General, is a long-standing champion for Osler. Now, he has turned his fundraising sights to Etobicoke General, rallying local families and businesses who pledged $204,000 to help build the hospital’s new wing. For his part, Narula said he was driven by a simple but profound question: “If we don’t do it, who will?”

The weather may finally be turning a little less frightful outside, but that hasn’t stopped Donna Farrell and her fellow legion ladies from knitting up some scarves, toques and mitts in preparation for another deep freeze next winter.

About three years ago, Farrell and Brenda Murray – both members of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Branch 286 on Irwin Road in north Etobicoke – began knitting winter wear for distribution to those in need in the community. “ We’re both big into knitting and crocheting and we were looking to do some outreach, so I put a notice in legion newsletter asking anybody that had any extra yarn to donate it.

Well, we got loaded down with all sorts of yarn, and that first year I made slippers, hats and scarves for Youth Without Shelter and Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter,” Farrell said, noting that it was her daughter, Katherine Bignell-Jones, who urged her to reach out to the two Etobicoke-based shelters.

Since that first year, fellow knitter Rachel Adamson has joined the effort, too, and the trio of knitters now drop off their offerings of knitwear to the office of Etobicoke North MP Kirsty Duncan for her to distribute to families in need in the community.

For Duncan, a lifelong legion supporter, seeing the reaction on people’s faces this winter when they received their hand-knit toques, scarves and mitts was a sight to behold.

“People literally lit up. I had people literally put these brand-new knitted hats against their face and say ‘you mean someone made this for me? I’ve never had a hat.’ They were just so thankful – especially this winter,” Duncan said, noting that she also dropped off several bags full of knitwear to Rexdale Community Health Centre this winter.

“The reality is, this is another example of the great work our people do for our

community that so often goes unrecognized. When the world’s not watching, here are these ladies knitting night after night with wool that has been donated.

For Farrell, Murray and Adamson, knitting is a yearround activity they hope to continue on with all summer long in order to make sure their supply of hats, mitts, scarves, and slippers are well-stocked, just in case next winter is a frigid repeat of this year’s.

The ladies are currently knitting their way through a large box “jam-packed”

with yarn donated to them by a Farrell family friend from Pennsylvania, but are always on the lookout for further donations to keep them busy.

“I taught myself to knit when I was five years old and I’ve been knitting ever since – and I’m 72 now. I usually knit for four or five hours a day, or until my hands start aching too much. I have arthritis, but I’m happy to do it,” Farrell said.

“There’s always someone who is down on their luck and in need of some warm winter clothing. If we can get people to donate the yarn to us, we’ll do the work.”

Daily Bread launches its Spring Drive

The Daily Bread Food Bank is asking Torontonians to donate what they can for its annual Spring Drive.

Running until April 26, the goal is to meet $225,000 (equivalent to 225,000 pounds) of nutritious food.

The organization can provide

Mayor Rob Ford announced two high-profile members of his campaign team Tuesday afternoon: former Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson, and Sam Tarasco, the actor who played the recurring character Sam “Caveman” Loscoe from the Trailer Park Boys television series.

The two accompanied Ford briefly outside the mayor’s city hall office to meet reporters, but did not answer questions – particularly after they strayed to Johnson’s testing positive for steroid use and being stripped of his gold medal in the 100 metre sprint in the 1988 Olympics.

“I support Ben 100 per cent,” Ford said in answer to the question. “We’ve all made mistakes in life.”

Johnson would only say, “I’ve always supported Mayor Ford,” before heading into the elevator.

Before Ford’s news event ended, he told reporters that both men were on his cam-

In the second season of the show, his character became involved in trailer park politics, unsuccessfully attempting to unseat incumbent Trailer Park Supervisor Jim Lahey.

He was ultimately thwarted by the protagonists of the show, a trio of criminals and drug dealers who preferred the status quo.

Parents say ‘oui’ to kindergarten French immersion New public school board program coming to Islington Junior Middle School in September CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com With its new Early French Immersion program set to launch in September, Islington Junior Middle School held a recent meeting for parents who have either registered or are interested in registering their children in next school year’s inaugural senior kindergarten class.

The meeting, which drew about 30 parents, was hosted

by Etobicoke-Lakeshore Trustee Pamela Gough, whose own daughter was a graduate of the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) French Immersion program at Richview Collegiate.

“As a parent, I had a lot of the same trepidations that some of you have tonight,” she said. “I can tell you, though, that they adjust very quickly and the students really bond with one another in French Immersion. The fact that they’re learning a new lan-

guage together, it gives them a very special bond – they really are like brothers and sisters.”

The new Early French Immersion program at Islington JMS will launch this September with a fullday senior kindergarten class of approximately 30 students, drawn from north-of-the-Gardiner schools such as Islington, Norseman, Sunnylea, Park Lawn, and Etienne Brulé public schools.

The TDSB decided to launch the new Early FI program at Islington, Gough explained, due to the oversubscription of the current program at John English JMS. “As of January, with the number of applications (for the French Immersion program) that we had coming in, if we accepted all of them, John English would have been overly filled,” she said. “So, it was simply the case of an overflow situation.”

Police have released security camera images of four men wanted in connection with an aggravated assault investigation stemming from an incident in north Etobicoke on Wednesday, March 24.

According to police, at 9 p.m. that night an altercation broke out between two groups of men in the Hwy. 27/Finch Avenue West area, during which one of the men displayed a weapon and assaulted the victims.

The first man is described as brown, aged 23 to 30, with a slim build and unshaven face.

He was wearing black-framed glasses, a black puffy Canada Goose vest, a blue button-up

shirt and beige khakis.

The second man is described as brown, aged 23 to 30, with a heavy build and unshaven face. He was wearing black-framed glasses, a shiny black North Face vest, an orange long-sleeved shirt, black sweatpants and white runners.

The third man is described as brown, aged 23 to 30, with a heavy build and a moustache.

He was wearing metal-framed glasses, a red puffy vest, black long-sleeved shirt, and a baseball hat.

Man flees jewelry store with ring Police are seeking a male suspect in connection with a theft from the Peoples jewelry store at 250 The East Mall on Wednesday, April 2.

According to police, the suspect entered the store at around 7 p.m. and inquired about a ring.

Once the suspect had the ring in his possession, he fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Two male suspects are being sought by police in connection with the robbery of a 52-year-old female delivery person on Thursday, March 27 in Etobicoke.

It’s alleged by police that the woman – an employee of Emmie’s Kitchen – was making a food delivery at an Islington Avenue and Dixon Road apartment building at around 3:30 p.m., when the two male suspects approached her.

The suspects pushed the victim to the ground and stole the bag she was carrying, which contained her food delivery and a debit machine, then fled the scene.

The victim was not hurt.

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) at 2990 Bloor St. W. was robbed by a knife-wielding man on Wednesday, March 26.

Police say a male suspect armed with a knife entered the bank at around 3:38 p.m., approached a female teller at the counter, and made a demand for cash.

The victim complied and the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction. No one in the bank was hurt.

The suspect is described as white, aged 40 to 45, 5’9”, 161 pounds, with a medium build.

A revised proposal to build two, 24-storey apartment buildings and an 11-storey residential and commercial building on the northwest corner of The East Mall and Rathburn Road was news this week to some concerned area residents.

Etobicoke York Community Council voted unanimously Tuesday to request the Etobicoke York director of community planning, in consultation with Ward 3 Councillor Peter Leon, conduct further community consultation and report to Toronto City Council if necessary.

A city planning report on the matter requested direction from councillors for a city lawyer and planner to attend a June 26 Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing on the proposal.

Instead, councillors voted

to support Leon in organizing a community meeting for residents with city planners and the developer, Lanterra East Mall Limited.

Lanterra appealed to the OMB last November after waiting more than two years for city action on its initial development application, Lanterra representative Kim Kovar said.

“My client waited more than two years to file an OMB appeal. They said, ‘I just can’t wait anymore.’ It just wasn’t moving forward,” she said.

Leon was appointed the Ward 3 councillor last fall after veteran councillor Doug Holyday won a provincial byelection to become the Conservative EtobicokeLakeshore MPP. Residents argued the proposal is too big, will further congest traffic in the area and has not changed substantially enough since Lanterra’s original proposal. NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project.

Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities.

Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy.

New national record for MacLean With two national titles already in the bag, in both women’s 200- and 400-metre freestyle events, Etobicoke Olympian Brittany MacLean still found a way to go out with a splash at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, B.C. last Saturday.

The Silverthorn Collegiate grad, now in her second year on a full U.S. scholarship at the University of Georgia, not only won the 800-metre event, but in the process smashed the second longest-standing national women’s record in the books.

Previous newspaper distributions experience an asset.

• Ability to work in a deadline driven environment • Action Oriented, Delegation, Problem Solving, Planning, Process Management • Ability to maintain speed and accuracy against established targets • Computer literacy, working knowledge of MS Office applications • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills a must • Fork lift certification (or be able to be certified) • Proficiency in written and spoken English • Health and Safety knowledge and experience preferred. A former Silverthorn Collegiate student who once helped his school soccer team reach the provincial championships has made the final cut for a prestigious U.S. College award.

Jordan Hibbert, who first started playing soccer with the Etobicoke Soccer Club at six years of age, was named as one of 16 finalists for the 2014 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.

The award, given to a student who combines athletic ability with both academic excellence and community activism, is run by a U.S.-based journal called Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. As the name implies it concerns itself with issues surrounding diversity in American higher education.

Every post-secondary institution in the U.S. is invited to nominate a candidate which then gets whittled down to the final 16 with this year’s recipient to be announced today (April 10).

Past recipients include a couple of National Football League quarterbacks, Robert Griffin III of the Washingston Redskins (and the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner) and Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.

Hibbert guided his Adelphi college team to a strong inaugural year in the division-two Northeast-10 Conference – finishing fourth out of 14 teams and ending up as semifinalists in the playoffs.

It’s not the only off-season honour accorded to Hibbert who was also named to the academic all-conference team (his grade point average is 3.79 out of 4) as well

He captained Silverthorn to a quarterfinal appearance at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) 3-A soccer championship in 2011.
