DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Now we know what many of us long suspected: Doug Ford will in fact be running for mayor in 2018. He didn’t quite manage to win in 2014, coming in a fairly close second to Mayor John Tory. And while he flirted with provincial politics, helping Raymond Cho take Scarborough Rouge-River in 2016, that is not where his heart is. So the mayoralty it is. But during his Sept. 8 announcement at Ford Fest, at his mother Diane’s home in central Etobicoke, it became clear Doug isn’t running alone. He will be running alongside a ghost: the spirit of former Mayor Rob Ford, his little brother, who died in early 2016 battling cancer, is going to be right there with him, "grinning down from heavl See CAN, page 28

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke North voters offered a largely tepid response this week to the news Doug Ford will challenge John Tory in a mayoral rematch next year. The ex-city councillor and brother of the late former mayor Rob Ford confirmed last Friday his mayoral run at the family’s annual Ford Fest barbecue. "It’s his right," Bill Eck said at Westway Centre Plaza at Dixon Road and Kipling Avenue. When asked by a reporter if he thought Ford’s younger brother, Rob, had been a good mayor, Eck said: "I don’t know about good. He was who he was." Tory told the media he welcomes a rematch with Ford. The 2014 election became a referendum on Rob

Ford’s mayoralty with Doug as Etobicoke North councillor, when Toronto became known globally for its ex-mayor’s erratic behaviour, crack smoking and stint in rehab. Rob Ford died last year after an 18-month battle with cancer. One woman, who said she knew the Ford brothers since their childhood, said she likely wouldn’t support Doug for mayor. "I support Robbie," she said. "He was very good at what he did. I don’t think I’d support Doug for mayor. He’s very involved in the (family) business. He runs the business here and in Chicago. He’s a very hard worker. I don’t see how he could do both." Jose Perez, who emigrated from Uruguay in 1991, said Ford doesn’t represent the people. "He’s got the Ford name, the money and the connec-

tions. But he doesn’t represent me," he said, noting he can’t afford to put his kids in soccer. "People are getting tired. (Politicians) think we’re stupid. We’re not. One day, the city will collapse." One woman simply shook her head no when asked if she’d vote Ford for mayor. Another woman spoke fondly of the populism that defined Rob Ford’s political career. "I think it’s fantastic," said Sylvia, a Brampton resident who didn’t give her last name. "I like the fact they talk to the people face-to-face. It’s not just a phone call." The next Toronto election will be held Oct. 22, 2018. Tory won the mayoralty in the 2014 election with 394,775 votes compared to Ford’s 330,610 votes.

Reaction largely tepid to Ford’s mayoral bid

Doug Ford announced his intention to run for mayor of Toronto in the 2018 municipal election at last week’s Ford Fest. municipal election at last week’s Ford Fest.

Crisanti out as deputy mayor after pledging Ford support DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor John Tory has fired Vince Crisanti from the position of deputy mayor, after the Etobicoke North councillor told Metroland Media Toronto that he would be supporting Doug Ford and not John Tory for mayor in 2018. "Based on his words and actions over the past few days, he has clearly stated he does not support my administration and intends to campaign for another candidate who has an approach that I believe will take the city backwards," said Tory in a news release, announcing that Etobicoke

Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday would be replacing Crisanti in the largely ceremonial post. Crisanti attracted Tory’s ire after he attended Ford Fest, the annual backyard barbecue put on by the Ford family at their matriarch Diane Ford’s Etobicoke home. The Sept. 8 barbecue also served as the launch of former city councillor Doug Ford’s mayoral campaign. Doug, brother to the late mayor Rob Ford, launched a blistering attack on Tory’s mayoralty, accusing him of breaking election promises on public transit, raising taxes and neglect-

ing residents. Crisanti was one of several politicians to introduce Ford, and while he Vince did not Crisanti explicitly endorse Ford’s candidacy there, in an exclusive interview with Metroland he said that when the time came he would endorse Doug Ford. "Next year come election time I’ll continue to do what I’ve done in the past and support Doug Ford," Crisanti said. In the interview, he in-

just afraid of Doug Ford. The Fords made him and can break him." Ward 2 (Etobicoke North) Councillor Michael Ford, meanwhile - nephew to Doug Ford - issued a statement critical of Tory’s decision. "The Mayor’s decision flies in the face of his desire to have everyone working hard to make Toronto a better place, and is a decision made purely based on politics and not on merit," said Ford in his statement. "Councillor Crisanti has done an admirable job as Deputy Mayor for western Toronto and delivered real results, but that did not matter to Mayor Tory. He’s

shown us today that he will use his authority to punish those who he believes have wronged him." Crisanti is being replaced by Stephen Holyday, whose father Doug served as Rob Ford’s deputy mayor for the first part of the 2010-2014 term of Council. Tory said that he hoped that Holyday would continue work that Crisanti had begun, building the economic viability of the city’s west end. In the news release, Tory praised Holyday as "a diligent and honest member of Council and never failed to represent the interests of his residents."

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The former Vincent Massey Junior School is one step closer to being designated for its cultural heritage value under the Ontario Heritage Act. Etobicoke York Community Council voted to endorse city planners’ and Toronto Preservation Board’s recommendations to designate the property at 68 Daisy Ave. for its design, historical and contextual value at its Sept. 6 meeting. The original 1929 school building is brick-clad with Tudor-Revival details designed in a Collegiate Gothic Style with a broad stairway leading to a central entrance, a Feb. 28 city planning report indicates. Its 1955-56 one-storey east addition is modernist in style, with classrooms with direct access to the school playgrounds. It is a "representative example of an early twentieth century Toronto school,"

the report stated, adding it is "valued for its association with the growth and development of Long Branch." In 2006, the property was included on the city’s Inventory of Heritage Properties. Developer Dunpar Developments Inc. proposes to build 73, four-storey townhouses on lands adjacent to the school. Dunpar plans to retain the original 1929 building for the continued operation of Vincent Massey Childcare Centre, and the school’s 1956 east building addition. Recently, Dunpar officials and city of Toronto staff met and reached a settlement on the site’s heritage issues. However, the redevelopment application as a whole is still headed to the Ontario Municipal Board this fall over density. Dunpar has entered into, and registered on title, a heritage easement agreement with the city "to the

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes, who represents the area, lauded saving the local

Long Branch landmark. "The TDSB released another property in my ward that was bought by a developer," Grimes told councillors. "But at the end of the day, we’re saving one great school that was part of Long Branch for many years." Grimes also referenced Dunpar’s interest in maintaining the existing Vin-

cent Massey Childcare Centre on the property. "One of the great things we’re keeping is the daycare. It’s just as important as keeping the heritage, in my mind," Grimes said. Etobicoke Guardian reporting on the school dates back to a story published on Sept. 19, 1929, headlined "Work begins on $75,000 school," in its predecessor

publication, The Advertiser. This year, the Etobicoke Guardian celebrates its 100th anniversary, which includes The Advertiser, which published news from Long Branch, Mimico and New Toronto. In 1963-64, the school name changed from Daisy Avenue Public School to Vincent Massey Junior School. Vincent Massey was a Canadian lawyer and diplomat who served as the first Canadian-born governor general of Canada. The Toronto public school board closed Vincent Massey Public School in 1983. It reopened in 1985 as Vincent Massey Childcare Centre, which continues to operate. Between 1987 and 1989, the CBC Television series, Degrassi Junior High, filmed at the Long Branch school. Toronto council will make a final decision on the matter at its Oct. 2 meeting.

ABOUT US

Time to get engaged with election year coming up Doug Ford’s decision to choose a rematch for mayor, rather than a seat at Queen’s Park, will hopefully put both elections on the radar of Toronto voters. The provincial election is June 7; while municipal elections across the province, including Toronto’s, are set for Oct. 22. The outcome of both elections will help determine the future course of the city. Ford made it known at his announcement, at the 23rd annual Ford Fest held in the backyard of his mother’s Etobicoke home, that he would seek Toronto’s top job as mayor on familiar themes: the war on cars and stopping the gravy train at city hall. Those themes resonated for him in the last election where he finished a surprisingly close second to Mayor John Tory, and prior to that it successfully worked for his brother, Rob. It’s going to be hard to get even that far this time around. Doug Ford is facing an incumbent, always a harder task, especially when the incumbent is polling as well as Tory has. And for two, it will be tough to pin Tory down on Ford’s talking points. Tory hasn’t raised property taxes at a much greater rate than Toronto Council did under Rob Ford. He’s no enemy of motorists, either. While he’s supported bike lanes, he’s also supported the replacement of the car-friendly Gardiner Expressway. And Tory is, well... a Tory, a former leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party. By comparison, the late Rob Ford had it easy running against the legacy of a progressive mayor (David Miller) who wasn’t even up for re-election. In any event, spending money wisely, whether at city hall or Queen’s Park, is a job requirement of all candidates. More attention needs to be focused on more pressing issues, especially public housing and transit. Public housing is crumbling while the ambitious transit building we are in the midst of, including the Scarborough subway extension and Tory’s signature SmartTrack, is suffering from dubious and haphazard planning. Both municipal and provincial candidates need to be pressed to come up with both the money to fund these long-simmering big-ticket items, along with a rational plan to make sure that money is spent well. Doug Ford’s entry into the race stirred up his vaunted Ford Nation and hopefully it will energize all voters to get up to speed with the issues and with the candidates as they start to emerge over the next few months.

Keesmaat wrote the book on truth to power "You often say we should speak truth to power." That was Andy Byford, the unflappable CEO of the Toronto Transit Commission, to the TTC’s board meeting the day after Labour Day. He was answering questions from commissioner Glen De Baeremaeker, and gently explaining to the persistent city councillor that the TTC couldn’t let buses from Durham Region use the overcrowded Scarborough Centre bus platform without risking collision. De Baeremaeker wasn’t happy about that, and muttered that there was no power around the table at the commission that he could see. Both of them, bureaucrat and politician, had an

DAVID NICKLE The City apt and well-timed point. Just a bit before the Labour Day weekend, another top bureaucrat, Jennifer Keesmaat, made it known that she was leaving city hall. In a relatively short five-year career as chief planner for the City of Toronto, Keesmaat had exemplified both points: she spoke truth to power and, in a way that disturbed and surprised many of her po-

litical so-called masters, she wielded it too - if, that is, one counts persuasiveness as a power in its own right. Keesmaat was something of a bureaucratic pioneer in that regard. She was hired from the private sector in 2013, under the Rob Ford administration and in a bureaucratic environment that would make any public sector worker quake in their boots. Keesmaat didn’t seem to care about any of that. She took to Twitter with gusto, unapologetically advancing a progressive urbanist agenda. She told a Toronto and Region Board of Trade luncheon crowd that councillors were pretty hard to deal with sometimes. Surviving those councillors and Mayor Ford, she took

on the new mayor John Tory - or at least his Gardiner Expressway rebuilt - in another public address. She did finally help craft the Scarborough subway plan, but she made her opposition known publicly and then privately through the process. Although that didn’t win her universal affection, particularly among right-wing councillors, Keesmaat managed to leave the job almost entirely unscathed. Indeed, the most rampant speculation was that she might wish to run for office herself something that she’s so far denied any interest in. Probably just as well for her. In terms of influence and capacity - in terms of power - it would be a step down.

Good Foot delivers packages and opportunity Non-profit delivers hundreds of parcels a month by foot and public transit

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Good Foot Delivery will pick up almost any package and drop it off promptly wherever you want in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. There are some items Ryan Hollinrake will balk at, like for example, a recent request to transport a 20-foot pipe. "Clearly someone didn’t read what we do," said Hollinrake, Good Foot’s affable managing director, laughing. "We’ll deliver your package as long as it fits on the TTC." The social enterprise company and non-profit employs more than 30 couriers, plus a small office staff. Last year, Good Foot delivered a record 11,500 packages. In a slow month, it will still move more than 800 parcels. As the company’s name suggests, all orders are delivered by foot or public transit. "We’re not your typical courier company," Hollinrake said. Not only will Good Foot pick up your parcel and deliver it for a fee, it will sort mail, deposit cheques, deliver an ice cream cake fast enough to prevent it from melting. Forgot your keys at a friend’s house? A Good Foot courier will pick them up and drop them off. "We just had a customer who broke a pair of eyeglasses. We picked them up, took them in to get them fixed and then dropped them back off," Hollinrake said. The company also has blue-chip clients and sponsors. Beanfield Metroconnect one of its largest customers often ships 10 parcels a day via Good Foot.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

(Above) Anton Ritchie, (left) and Jon Gauthier, of Good Foot delivery service, head out to pick up a parcel. CIBC and TD Bank also make use of the service, and recently Facebook. One aspect which separates the company from the rest of the industry: all of its couriers, dispatchers and trainers have some form of developmental disability, from autism to Down’s Syndrome. Not that it prevents them from doing their job; Hollinrake says he has to sometimes remind his couriers not to deliver the

packages too quickly. Some of the most productive couriers can deliver more than eight packages during a single seven-hour shift. Unlike a harried courier faced with delivering a truck full of parcels, Good Foot couriers endear themselves to their customers, adding a little personality to the job. The company was the brainchild of Kirsten Gauthier and her brother Jon, Good Foot’s first cou-

rier, launching in 2009. Gauthier is now chair of the company’s board of directors. Jon said the company started modestly with around three or four volunteer couriers. After hitting its fundraising goals the company was able to start paying its couriers and began to grow steadily. "Each year we doubled our revenue and our staff," Jon said. "It’s great to help people out and give them a

place to come to every day." Jon, who has a developmental disability, continues to train new employees and handles social media marketing. "We didn’t have a business plan or anything," he said. "We just presented a solution to a problem." Good Foot is not just a place of employment, it’s a community hub for the couriers who will hang out well past their shifts. There’s more room now

with the company having recently expanded its office space inside the Centre for Social Innovation. Good Foot operates under a zero-profit model, with 100 per cent of revenues going to its employees, and day-to-day operating costs covered through charity donations. It supplements revenues with donations and in-kind sponsorships, like hot lunches for staff provided by local eateries. Beyond the odd federal grant, it receives no government funding. Hollinrake, who has been with the company since December 2016, says it’s almost at a break-even point where it can pay its employees, as well as cover operating costs solely from revenue. "We want Good Foot to be self-sustaining eventually," he said. The company is steadily building up its donor base, attracting interest from Fortune 500 companies and people who just want to help. Mike Wilson, the Toronto Maple Leafs super fan and largest private collector of the hockey team’s memorabilia recently hosted a charity fundraiser, inviting Good Foot’s entire staff to his Forest Hill home to check out the vast collection. In one night, the company collected some $40,000 in donations. During donation pitches he says he’ll forgo the typical Powerpoint presentation, instead inviting some of the couriers to talk directly with well-heeled donors. 10 minutes is all they need to compel a donation. "Once you meet our staff, you just get it," he said.

Jamestown could be getting traffic-calming speed humps in the future. Etobicoke and York councillors voted at community council to poll Jamestown Crescent residents about whether they support speed humps in English, and in any other languages deemed necessary by the city clerk. Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday voted against the motion. Deputy Mayor Vince Crisanti, who represents the area, said Jamestown residents expressed to him concerns with speeding vehicles on their one-way street in the John Garland Boulevard and Martin Grove Road area. "There are no traffic calming measures to aid in reducing the speed and cars parked along the street reduce site lines making it difficult and sometimes dangerous for

Crisanti requested the poll to determine whether Jamestown residents would support the installation of speed humps on their street. If poll results indicate Jamestown residents favour speed humps, com-

munity council directed a city lawyer to prepare a bylaw to alter Jamestown Crescent for traffic calming. Further, if the poll is positive, councillors directed the city’s transportation services department to reduce the speed limit from 40 km/h to 30 km/h on Jamestown Crescent when speed humps are installed.

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has opened a new $15-million brain research centre in downtown Toronto. The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics is located at 250 College St., near Spadina Avenue and will house close to 35 scientists and technicians specializing in genetics, brain imaging and more to study the brain using data, artificial intelligence and other technologies. "We want to use that data, also the clinical records (of patients), to be able to analyze it to understand what are the defining characteristics of different disorders," said Dr. Sean Hill, the inaugural director of the new centre. "Right now, psychiatry typically works on symptoms and neurology

sort of works on the biology of the brain; we want to bridge those two." Hill told Metroland Media Toronto the centre, which was announced at a news conference Sept. 7, will have large computer banks and a super computer, which staff will use in collaboration with various partners. "(We’ll) analyze the data, build multi-scale models of the brain and use both of those approaches to better define disorders and identify ways to treat them and their underlying mechanisms," he said, adding they could have a team of up to 90 professions over the next five years. The Krembil family have made several investments to neuroscience research in the past. In 2015, Toronto Western Research Institute was renamed the Krembil Research Institute after pre-

vious donations to the hospital totalled $80 million. Catherine Zahn, CEO and president at CAMH, told Metroland she is excited about the new centre. "The investment that they’re making in a centre for neuroinformatics is really going to be joining an entire family of scientific infrastructure that’s going to be able to glue together that information to capitalize on the data that we have," she said. Hill is optimistic knowing his team at the centre will make progress in research of mental illnesses. "We’re going to make a very tight loop between our ability to capture data and look at health records to make predictions about which people are maybe more vulnerable and need some extra help and care to prevent things from developing further," he said.

Forest Hill grand opening a success The local real estate office looks forward to its future in Etobicoke On July 22, Forest Hill Real Estate welcomed the Etobicoke community into its new office. Guests enjoyed an ice cream truck, a DJ, face painting and free food. There was also a lemonade stand at the event that raised hundreds of dollars for Women’s Habitat, a cause that supports local women and children in need. “The grand opening went really well,” says Diana Quinn, Realtor and co-owner of the Etobicoke office. “The community welcomed us with open arms.” Quinn, her partner Leila Talibova and their team met many neighbours and new friends at the event. The group is looking forward to supporting other small businesses in the area. “We want to thank the community for welcoming us and embracing us, “ says Quinn. “Everyone is welcome to visit our office at anytime. We look forward to continuing to meet others in our community.” Though the grand opening was just celebrated, the group is already planning more community events. Quinn says there are plans to have a local tune-up day to promote the importance of what bicycles signify to many across the city. The event will promote a healthy, active, environ-

mentally-friendly lifestyle. Forest Hill Realtors use a new approach when helping local buyers and sellers. When a potential client chooses to work with a Realtor in the office, they’re hiring the entire team. “We’re very creative and we like to think outside the box to ensure our clients have the best possible experience,” says Quinn. The Forest Hill team is made up of active members in the community, many of whom reside in Etobicoke. They are experts in many fields: preconstuction, residential, income-producing properties, property management and more. This has created more of a resource centre than a typical real estate office. Visit the office at 3505 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Visit www.foresthilletobicoke.com or call 416-363-3473 for more information.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com One of Toronto’s oldest community service organizations will mark its centennial anniversary this month by looking to its past to help shape its future. The Kiwanis Club of Toronto, which was first chartered in 1917, will celebrate 100 years of service to this city’s children on Sept. 21 with a Centennial Gala dinner at the Old Mill that will both honour its centurylong legacy of milestones, while also looking forward to the club’s next 100 years of achievement. "While the Centennial Gala gives us a great opportunity to look back with pride, it also provides a chance to look forward with hope - for the kids and youth in Toronto and our role helping them," said Toronto Kiwanis President Joe Elkerton. One of the ways the club has already helped fulfil that mandate is with its Kiwanis Centennial Grant program,

In addition to such financial contributions, Hugh Williams, the executive director of the Kiwanis Club of Toronto, said looking forward, the club would also like to get back to its handson roots with the recently created Kiwanis Cares program - an innovative outlet for volunteering that gives club members the opportunity to directly support worthwhile local organiza-

Another key directive for the Kiwanis Club of Toronto over the next century, Williams said, will be in the area of youth leadership - particularly with the development of Kiwanis Key Clubs at local schools. “ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.

28 ANALYSIS

Can Doug Ford tap into brother Rob’s magic? l Continued from front

en," pushing the agenda forward. The spectre of Rob Ford was raised numerous times during the speeches at Ford Fest. Ward 1 councillor Vince Crisanti risked and finally lost his deputy mayoralty, telling the crowd there that "Rob Ford is with us: he is everywhere tonight." Ward 7 councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, not to be outdone, pushed it over the top, telling the crowd, "I know Rob Ford wants one thing right now, I do talk to him every night, I pray like everybody else..." The canonization of Rob Ford began a long time ago, of course - really, in his political lifetime spent returning phone calls from beleaguered Torontonians and expounding an antigovernment message on talk radio. It took off in earnest, after his passing in 2016,

when his funeral took over city hall and shut down the city core. None other than Rob Ford’s daughter Stephanie, then 10 years old, planted the seed as she said, in her eulogy: "I know he’s in a better way now, and he’s the mayor of heaven now. I know that he will be with us forever. I love him so much." The Mayor of Heaven. In the magical world of Ford Nation, it is a powerful notion. It is magic that Doug Ford will need, if he hopes to persuade Toronto to give him the considerable power of the mayor’s office next year. Paula Fletcher, Toronto-Danforth councillor and one of those who has served alongside Rob Ford both when he was councillor and mayor, said there are worse strategies than treating the former mayor’s memory with almost religious reverence. "I think it plays very well to Ford Nation," she

said. "It’s Eva Peron: you’re there, (and then after death) you’re still there. Doug Ford needs Rob still there in order to have any chance in the election." Rob Ford was, after all, a nearly mythic figure in his life. He was an energetic public servant, making house calls to residents across the city. He was also epically flawed: he smoked crack, was a self-confessed alcoholic, and under the influence was abusive and offensive and often a hazard. But as Fletcher pointed out, "the common people really loved Rob Ford." And that love - that spectre of love - is Doug Ford’s best and perhaps only hope. It took him to second place in 2014. It may take all of that and more to pull him ahead in 2018. Because as Fletcher points out: "It doesn’t matter how many times Doug Ford invokes Rob Ford: he’s not him."

Metroland file photo

Back in 2014, the late Rob Ford stood supporting his big brother Doug as he backed out of the provincial leadership race. Now, the elder Ford may be channeling his brother’s memory as he reaches for the Toronto mayoralty in 2018.

Bloordale Bombers win provincials Bloordale’s Rookie Select Green team has earned a spot in the record books after being crowned Ontario Champions on Labour Day, capping a 42-5-1 dream season. It was a fitting end to a magical dream season for the team, which started the championship drive working out in a south Etobicoke school gym in January. By the end of the season, the Rookies played 20 league games with a record of 18 wins and 2 losses; five tournaments - Mississauga

In 48 games, the Bomber Bats resulted in 823 runs while the tight defence only gave up 281. On average, the team outscored opponents by 11 runs a game.

For the second time in three years - first as a major mosquito rep A team and now as a major peewee rep AA squad - Etobicoke’s Martingrove White Sox have won the Ontario provincial championship played over the Labour Day weekend. Martingrove had swept to victory in the Toronto Baseball Association playoffs two weeks earlier, winning all five of their games, and entered the provincials with a 38-16-4 record for the season. In the first game of the OBAs on Sept. 1, the White Sox knocked off the Mississauga Majors 4-3, with a dramatic seventh inning walkoff single, and proceeded to win their next three round robin games against the East York Bulldogs (in walkoff fashion with two runs in the bottom of the seventh); Barrie White Sox (8-4) and Newmarket Hawks (5-2). The four straight wins put Martingrove into the championship round on Monday against Barrie Red Sox who finished with the second-best record. The double knock-out format of the tournament meant Barrie needed to win twice while Martingrove would

Terry Fox Run in West Deane Park Sept. 17

When it comes to women’s health, we always give 100%

Run, walk, rollerblade and donate online

When you donate to SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Growing Women’s Health, 100% of your donation goes to a local women’s health charity.

The annual Etobicoke Terry Fox Run takes place Sept. 17 at West Deane Park, marking the 37th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, and the 36th year at West Deane. The run is a noncompetitive community event that encourages everyone of all ages and abilities to participate. You don’t have to be a runner to take part. Walk, rollerblade, ride a bike, push a stroller, or even just sit in the park and enjoy the music. Come alone, with friends, family, or create a team and participate as a group. Although the trail is 10 km, feel free to cover as much or as little as you like. This year, many of the popular events will be back, such as live music, a barbecue, post-run massages, a silent auction and children’s activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and the Home Depot Children’s Workshop. This annual fundraiser in Terry’s name is one of the largest inclusive and successful community events for local residents. Together, the community raised more than $60,000 last year, and more than $1.4 million at West Deane to date. While the run does not have an entry fee or minimum donation, participants are asked to fundraise

Give today by adding to the tree at your local Shoppers Drug Mart.
