Etobicoke Centennial Choir hosts open rehearsal Coming off its landmark 50th anniversary season, the Etobicoke Centennial Choir (ECC) welcomes new singers in all sections for the upcoming season. Interested singers are invited to attend an open rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd. Participants will have the opportunity to sing with the choir during a typical rehearsal, meet the conductor and choristers and explore what the choir offers. The Ontario government is joining the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company to invest in new technology and product development at its north Etobicoke facility. Etobicoke North Liberal MPP Shafiq Qaadri and Etobicoke Centre Liberal MPP Yvan Baker announced the provincial grant of up to $8.25 million at Apotex on Aug. 30. It will create as many as 325 jobs, the government said. Apotex develops, manufactures and distributes more than 300 generic drugs that are exported to 115 countries. "From research and development, to manufacturing and packaging, our highly skilled workforce is key to delivering on our purpose of providing access to affordable, high quality and innovative health care solutions," Dr. Jeremy B. Desai, Apotex CEO and

The Ontario government grant is part of a larger investment by the company valued at $222 million. The project is scheduled for completion in 2022.

DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca Some called Donald Russell unwise when he opened his drugstore in New Toronto in 1933 - in the middle of the Depression and he admitted later that it was a very difficult time. He slept in a room at the back of the store to save money. Many patrons recalled his kindness in filling needed prescriptions when they were broke, letting them pay later. Don was born in Norval in 1907. After completing high school, he decided to become a pharmacist, which required a two-year apprenticeship, followed by three years of university. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1931, he worked for two years in Windsor, then decided to open his own pharmacy in New Toronto. He rented a former hardware store at what is now 2891 Lake Shore Blvd. W., on the southeast corner of Sixth
Street. He gradually enlarged the store to three times its original size so he could carry a wider variety of merchandise. He stocked unusual items for a pharmacy, like bird seed, portable radios and camera equipment. He also carried more cosmetics than any other store in the Toronto/Hamilton area. Don married Dorothy Reynolds in 1935, and they had two children, Robert (Bob) and Beverley. Robert also became a pharmacist and joined his father’s practice after graduation. About 1950, Don opened two branches of his drugstore: one in a new plaza at Burnhamthorpe Road and Martin Grove Road, and the other at 4900 Dundas St. W. in Islington village. The Islington store closed in 1957 and its prescription database was transferred to the Burnhamthorpe Store, which remained open until 1981. Don was an energetic man of ideas and belonged

He was a life long member of the Lakeshore Lions where he held almost every position in the organization. He was also a
member of the Kingsway Shriners, the Lakeshore Paraplegic Society, the Red Cross and the New Toronto Library Board. However, his whole life
he had been fascinated by politics and soon he could not resist its call. After a one-year term on the school board in 1948, he became a councillor for two
terms. He next ran for mayor, a position he held from 1955 to 1967. He also served on Metro council for several years. When New Toronto amalgamated with Etobicoke, he was easily elected to the new Board of Control. On Dec. 17, 1971, Don was at his home on Lakeshore Drive when he passed away suddenly of a heart attack at age 64. A park on Birmingham Street, west of Kipling Avenue, was renamed Don Russell Memorial Park in his honour. His son, Bob, carried on the pharmacy business in New Toronto, retiring and selling the store in 2011. Today, Don Russell Drugs is operated by a new owner in the same store where the business started 84 years ago.

New blood-alcohol rules just make sense The news that the federal government might lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers might seem to have come out of nowhere. After all, thanks to concerted efforts by lawmakers and police, the rate of impaired driving incidents in Canada dropped to a 30-year low in 2015. Yet despite this progress, there is no better time than now to consider tougher drunk driving laws in this country. In less than a year, a new kind of impaired driver could be menacing Canada’s roads - one who just legally smoked marijuana. It is vital that if the federal Liberals permit the recreational use of cannabis starting next summer, they get tougher with drivers caught under the influence of drugs. As they do that, a stricter law on how much people can drink before driving is also very much in order. The federal government is justifiably concerned that when recreational marijuana is legal, more people may drive under the influence of the drug. And some of those irresponsible people might even drive after mixing marijuana and alcohol. That potentially lethal combination is reason enough for Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to consider lowering the legal blood limits for drivers from the current 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams. Rules that helped limit drinking and driving in the past might be too lax if booze and pot are mixed. Yet her proposal has other merits. While decades of anti-drunk-driving campaigns have produced positive results, we still have a long way to go. A recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked Canada first out of 19 wealthy countries for the percentage of traffic deaths linked to alcohol impairment. Canada’s current rules were established in 1969 and based on research that concluded the risk of being in a car crash was twice as likely if a driver has 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in his or her system. It turns out that’s wrong. New research shows the risk of being in a collision is almost triple at the 80-milligrams level and rises exponentially when alcohol levels are even higher. Many European countries, as well as Australia, have wisely lowered the limit to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Canadians are headed down a new and unfamiliar highway with legalized marijuana. We can make the journey safer with stronger laws prohibiting every kind of impaired driving.

Toronto’s immigrants are cheated at work Winli Apparel Manufacturing shut down in Scarborough, and its sewing-machine operators, making little more than minimum wage, got four weeks’ pay. Chinese-speaking immigrants, some worked for Winli for more than 20 years. Thirteen got legal help to get the rest of what they were owed. Winli was ordered to pay them $26,000, and didn’t. The province dragged the company to court and, on Aug. 21, fined it $49,000, none of which the workers will see. That’s normal. Avvy Go, director of Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, represented the workers, and says many won’t approach the Ministry of Labour if they think they can keep their job.

says, chances are you’re more willing to accept less than you’re entitled to when employers say, "That’s just the way it is." The report’s findings: 43 per cent of the restaurant workers earned less than minimum wage, 57 per cent didn’t get vacation pay, and 20 per cent were owed wages. Faced with yawning gaps in provincial enforcement, the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto and other groups are encouraging volunteers to talk to Chinese-speaking workers about their rights. In the early 1990s, Ontario had a Wage Protection Fund which, if it hadn’t been erased, could have paid the Winli employees. The catalyst for the fund was another clinic case,
Lark Manufacturing, which shut its factory on Carlaw Avenue in 1988, owing 148 people, nearly all of them Chinese, more than $500,000. Its owners opened another factory nearby. Bringing the wage fund back, Go argues, would lead to fewer injustices like Winli. Meanwhile, owners of the Regal restaurant chain around Toronto are finally going to court in November, after being ordered by the ministry to pay former employees $475,000. W
atch repairman Shane Ede is hunched over a 1960s IWC Schaffhausen wrist watch in his apartment on Triller Avenue in Parkdale, his eyes mere millimetres away from the most intricate portions of the watch, placing small pieces back where they belong. He’s trying to fix its stem, the component which allows the owner to wind the watch to the correct time. This is what he does seven days a week. The 69-year-old hunkers down in front of his desk in his bedroom for hours at a time engrossed in repairing everything from pocket watches to mantle clocks and everything in between. He’s Shane the watch whisperer and has been for the past 41 years. From antique Rolexes, to Omegas to Swiss Military watches, if it’s broken, chances are Shane is the man to can fix it. Up until four years ago, he got the majority of his business from dealers, but that all changed when a customer wrote a glowing Yelp review. Since then the referrals just kept rolling in. "It just took off. Kaboom! Thousands of people found me on the internet," Shane said. "People have sent (watches) and travelled here for me to fix watches from India and Venezuela who said they’d found me online. It’s bizarre. "The irony of this isn’t lost on Shane. He calls his business a "dying hobby" that is as traditional as a shoe cobbler. And yet he’s found a way, albeit accidentally, to thrive in the modern, digital age with the help of watch forums and reviews found on the internet for those who know where to look. "Isn’t it wild?" he says laughing. He started out fixing watches as a side gig while he taught English composition for business students at Ryerson University in ’76. He was an apprentice to an older watch repairman in the city after he took in a clock for repair for his mother. Six months later he opened his own home business and never looked back. "All of sudden 10 years has gone by then 20 years and all of a sudden I really know what I’m doing now, all of a sudden my fingers are like a ballet. You can almost watch them do their job and that takes over," Shane explains. "I don’t know how to describe it. It’s something that’s just too much fun."

The stories were collected through various workshops, programs, and outreach events from February – September. While you’re here, you can also check out our window display “In The Clouds” and the alley-way exhibit as well. The alley will showcase 70 of our favourite stories, some are funny, hopeful and endearing, while others are heartbreaking or bleak. We hope that with each trip down the alleyway, viewers will find new stories and interpret them differently with each visit.

Yvonne Ohara, blood donor ambassador dies TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Yvonne Ohara was arguably Canadian Blood Services’ best ambassador. She distinguished herself as one of only a handful of Ontarians to donate blood an astounding 800 times. She donated platelets every two weeks, earning a reputation for never missing an appointment. She eagerly and enthusiastically encouraged Canadians, especially the young, to become regular donors, a strong voice much needed to move the needle on the fact only four per cent of Canadians donate blood. Ohara died last week. She was 69 or 70. The Etobicoke woman and longtime Toronto police civilian employee told it like it was armed with a wry wit. The Guardian last reported on Ohara when she made her remarkable 800th blood donation last October at Canadian Blood Services’ Toronto Blood Centre on College Street in downtown Toronto. "Blood is the ultimate renewable resource," Ohara had said. "You don’t know when you, a family member or a friend may need some blood." Hailu Mulatu, CBS territory manager, remembered Ohara as a bright light in CBS’s College Street building. "Yvonne is a remarkable human being," Mulatu said of the woman he often saw during her donation appointments over the past 15 years. "She is very, very committed and very generous. Her incredible commitment to donate translates to more than 1,600 hours over the

Every two weeks, Ohara would lie patiently for an hour as a platelet and plasma extraction machine hummed beside her. Ohara, who was trained as a palliative care and thanatology nurse, had said the curiosity of seeing donors on different blooddrawing machines drew her to more specialized donations of plasma, then platelets.
Protein-rich plasma donations help patients with some bleeding disorders, liver diseases, and some operations, as well as cancer and bone marrow therapy. Platelets, which make blood clot, is often donated on a one-toone match to a patient in need. Patients in need of platelets have diseases associated with prolonged bleeding, such as leukemia or cancer and burns. Ohara credited her late father, Charles Overton, who donated 99 times before his age precluded him, for inspiring her to donate blood beginning at age 21. Ohara’s husband, Michael Scharlemann, has donated blood more than 50 times. He donated stem cells after being a match on the national unrelated bone marrow registry. Every minute of every day someone in Canada needs blood, CBS reported. "In most cases, that is blood from more than one generous donor," Mulatu said. I chose Tapestry. I wanted the freedom to decide what to do with my time. During golf season, I like to get up, grab a quick breakfast, and head off to the course for the day. In the off season, there are plenty of activities at Tapestry to keep me stimulated. These days, I can still make par. I have my health, and I get to enjoy my new friends both on and off the course. Terry Fox Run in West Deane Park Sept. 17 The annual Etobicoke Terry Fox Run takes place Sept. 17 at West Deane Park, marking the 37th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, and the 36th year at West Deane. The run is a noncompetitive community event that encourages everyone of all ages and abilities to participate. You don’t have to be a runner to take part. Walk, rollerblade, ride a bike, push a stroller, or even just sit in the park and enjoy the music. Come alone, with friends, family, or create a team and participate as a group. Although the trail is 10 km, feel free to cover as much or as little as you like. This year, many of the popular events will be back, such as live music, a barbecue, post-run massages, a silent auction and children’s activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and the Home Depot Children’s Workshop. This annual fundraiser in Terry’s name is one of the largest inclusive and successful community events for local residents. Together, the community raised more than $60,000 last year, and more than $1.4 million at West Deane to date. While the run does not have an entry fee or minimum donation, participants are asked to fundraise
or make a donation. You can raise funds online at www.terryfoxrun.org, use a pledge sheet or make a donation at the run site. Don’t forget to bring cash for the silent auction, T-shirts and barbecue. Etobicoke registration begins at 8 a.m. at the main park entrance (Martin Grove Road north of Rathburn Road) with participants joining any time between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event wraps up at 1 p.m. A dog-friendly environment, the park is easily accessed via TTC, and is bicycle, stroller, rollerblade, and wheelchair accessible. The Somali network is one of several diversity networks of the Toronto and Region Labour Council, Canada’s oldest and largest labour union with 205,000 members. Other networks reach out to Toronto’s Chinese, Filipino, Tamil and Ethiopian and Eritrean communities. "Inclusion and equity is about creating space for workers to share realities and needs, paving the way for leadership from within. The dignity of every worker is essential for a healthy and vibrant workplace," said labour council spokesperson Kiruthiha Kulendiren, adding the networks "recognize that they face obstacles defined by who they are." The network’s constituency is both young and older Somali-Canadian workers, as well as Canadian-
born and university-educated twentysomethings who struggle to find fulltime jobs. "They are social workers, lawyers, work in banks, in post offices," said Habiba Adan, a social worker and Somali Workers Network co-chair. "There are also older people who haven’t had a chance to learn about their rights and where to go for help. There are also new refugees who need help." Many work two or three part-time jobs. Others work for temp agencies oncall, making it nearly impossible to work another job or attend school. While Adan is "hopeful and positive" about the Ontario government’s commitment to a $15 minimum wage and other workplace reforms, Yusuf said "it is a good start." Without the security of steady, full-time work or a career, young Somalis can fall prey to violence or depression, Yusuf and Adan
said. "They need jobs with enough money to live so when they graduate, they’re not killing each other or being depressed at home," Yusuf said. "Every single weekend, we go to the hospital to support the family of a young man. He went to university, but he has no job. Every single hour we get phone calls asking, ’What do I do now? Where do I go?’" Stigma surrounding mental illness in strong in Somali culture, Adan said. "People think you’re either sane or you’re insane running around naked. There is no in-between. People don’t think they’re ill," she said. Yusuf called mental illness about Somali Canadian youth an "epidemic." "Stress and mental illness is high among our children when they can’t get jobs," he said. "We choose to be Canadian. Our children are Canadian. It’s a Canadian problem."
