Sephora Hosein wants to bring the Big Bang Theory generation to the library DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Sephora Hosein grew up the daughter of a film projectionist and she credits her father with beginning her lifelong interest in science fiction and fantasy. "I’m just a lifelong fan," says Hosein in her office at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library on College Street. "I’m just a lifelong fan. I grew up reading it, grew up watching it. My dad was a projectionist so I grew up watching films. I saw E.T. nine times in the theatre. It was a very strange childhood." Hosein is two months into what can only be a dream job for her - that of the new collection head of the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Speculation. She is the first new head of the 47year-old collection in more than three decades. The Merril collection is one of, if not the, largest public research collection of its kind in North America, with more than 72,000 items of science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction. It was founded in 1970 as the Spaced Out Library, when American science fiction writer and editor Judith Merril left the U.S. for Toronto as a conscientious objector against the Vietnam War. Merril donated her per-

Hosein has taken the reins from longtime collection head Lorna Toolis, herself having moved from managing another formidable research collection Toronto Public Library’s Canadiana Collection at the Toronto Reference Library. "It’s an extremely

unique kind of collection in general in a public library setting, to be publicly available, to encourage the level of access that we do - that’s the one thing," says Hosein. "Then on a grander scale, I’m told that the Merril is a premier collection among the world’s premier collections. I think that’s fabulous for Toronto, for the academics here and the people who travel here to look at what maybe others don’t have. And speculative fiction has become so much more a part of the fabric of popular culture, so much more mainstream, so much

fantasy, but never dove deep into fandom. "I want people to associate us with somewhere to go, somewhere to investigate, somewhere to take their kids," says Hosein. "I don’t know that we’ve opened up to a lot of younger audiences. Maybe our material isn’t associated for that age group, but there is some. And the younger people are the ones we want to be our future users." Hosein also wants to let the public know that it’s not just books at the Merril. The library has also amassed a very complete

more acceptable." The collection on the third floor of the Lillian H. Smith branch has hardly been hidden away - over the years it’s played host to readings from popular science fiction and fantasy writers like Cory Doctorow, Neil Gaiman and Robert J. Sawyer, and it’s served as a focal point for Toronto’s growing community in the genre. But Hosein wants to take the promotion of the collection to another level, reaching out through social media and programming for people who maybe love science fiction and

collection of role-playing games and tabletop games. "We are investigating doing programming with that," she says. "If you’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons, why not come try? If you’ve just watched Big Bang Theory on TV and said, ’oh that’s what Sheldon and his friends play .’ It might spark some interest, or respark some interest if they’ve done it as children and left it off." For Hosein, the job itself represents a massive rediscovery. Much of the collection is locked away in climate-controlled stacks, and as she walks through those stacks, "I joke that I’m going to get a neck injury," she says. "Almost every time I walk through the stacks I’ll see something out of the corner of my eye some piece of art that we own. Dune (the classic science fiction novel by Frank Herbert) is my favourite of all time, and we have all the different covers . The fact that we have an original, first-edition copy of Dracula." Sadly, only library staff can walk through the stacks themselves - the older pieces in the collection are too fragile for casual handling. But researchers and academics who know what to ask for from the knowledgeable staff there are rarely disappointed. And for those who don’t know what to ask for? Hosein is hoping they’ll come in to learn. "The people who know about us or need to use our collection for research, they know where to find us," says Hosein. "It’s the people who don’t know. These are the people we want to reach out to."

Thistletown Collegiate’s freshest crop of culinary students is set to host a fundraising garden party next month - and they’ve invited Toronto’s best chefs to help out at the Spanishthemed event. "We have an amazing lineup of top talent," the school’s culinary instructor, chef Keith Hoare, said of the dozen local celebrity chefs who have volunteered for the Sept. 23 event - the proceeds from which will support his students’ 2019 trip to Spain. "I was hoping for a couple of chefs to come out and help us, so I called a bunch of people that I know, some acquaintances, and some people I didn’t know - and the response has been overwhelming." Among the celebrity chefs who have signed up to lend their talents during the rain-or-shine event are the Food Network’s Chris-

tine Cushing and Shahir Massoud, co-host of CBC’s The Goods. Other participating chefs include Nick Liu (Dailo), Trevor Lui (Kanpai Snack Bar), Dan Craig (Ritz-Carlton), Keith Pears (Delta Toronto), Steve Gonzalez (Baro), Michael Olson (Niagara Food & Wine Inst.), and former Thistletown Collegiate Institute student Steffany Singh (Beau Bakery). All will be on hand at Thistletown’s 14,000square-foot organic garden for what Hoare has billed "the ultimate garden party" - featuring 10 food stations, on-site cooking demos and a silent auction. "September is a great time for our garden, so I thought this event would be a great way to utilize that," Hoare said. "Also, it’ll be a great opportunity for the kids to kind of run their own festival. We’ve traipsed out to lots of other festivals over the years, so I thought it would be good to have one

in our own backyard." All proceeds from the event will support Thistletown’s upcoming nine-day culinary trip in March 2019, Hoare added. "We’re taking 25 stu-

dents to Spain, where they’ll get to take cooking classes, visit markets and farms, and participate in cultural activities in Barcelona, Madrid, Seville," he said.

As with the three previous trips Hoare has planned for his culinary students - to Italy in 2013 and 2017, and to Spain and France in 2015 he plans to host a series of fundraisers over the next

two years to help offset 75 per cent of his students’ travel costs. Meanwhile, by getting the students themselves immersed in those fundraisers, Hoare said he’s also teaching them valuable life lessons. "While the trip itself is fantastic, the lead-in to it the two years of fundraising, and making jams and sauces, and doing festivals and catering events - it’s all part of that great educational experience," he said. "They learn that with effort comes reward; that if they work hard and put the effort in, they can make their goals and dreams come true." Thistletown’s "ultimate garden party" will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at 20 Fordwich Cres. • OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

Kevin Clarke, leader of "The People" Kevin Clarke shows me how he barricaded his apartment door, two days earlier, against the sheriff, his social worker, and police. They tried evicting him. He live-streamed it all. "If you put ’nightmare’ and ’hell’ and ’disgrace,’ that’s what it comes up to," he says of his situation. Follow politics closely in Toronto? You’ve probably seen Clarke. Five times, he’s run for mayor; nine times for MPP, four for MP, twice for councillor. He leads "The People," a registered political party. In public, he’s always campaigning. His campaigning voice is loud. I’ve seen him escorted offstage at debates when he wasn’t invited. He’s waved a flag or held a cross when

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto he was. He’s drawn slogans in chalk on sidewalks at Yonge and Sheppard, on curbs at Yonge and Dundas. Clarke ran a car business. Then he became homeless, which, he says, can happen to anybody. "Twenty years ago, I was an extensive drug user, sleeping on concrete." Clarke panhandled in

the Annex. I saw him disrupt a demonstration supporting the homeless in St. Jamestown; he wore roller skates and a bed sheet. At 53, he’s on disability payments, has back problems, liver problems, a busted foot. A program for adults living with serious mental illness pays his rent. But his landlord in Scarborough’s Kingston-Galloway area wants him out. Running to replace the late Rob Ford as an Etobicoke councillor last August, Clarke kept hanging makeshift signs outside his building and from his balcony. The landlord, and Clarke’s own social worker, testified this was related to mental illness. Clarke says he’s exercis-

ing his right to campaign. He maintains the landlord, forced by his complaints to clean up his building’s playground and make various repairs, wants him out for that. "I told them the only way they can win is if I wind up dead or in hospital." Last Friday, he went to Divisional Court to get more time for an appeal. If evicted, he’ll be homeless again. Clarke can annoy. He videotapes his arguments. But I understand now: as long as Clarke runs for office, Toronto’s homeless, its truly marginalized, its ill, cannot completely be ignored. Nordstrom, Zara, and The Danish Pastry House will open in Sherway Gardens later this month. The fashion giants and the popular Danish bakery are among 10 new retailers opening in the south Etobicoke mall’s new south-wing expansion on Aug. 29. The new expansion also includes retailers Saje, Nike, MAC, Loding, Squish, BonLook, and L’Intervale. Cadillac Fairview is the only Canadian shopping mall operator with three properties housing both Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue stores, Andy Traynor, CF Sherway Gardens general manager, said. "Beyond the physical expansion and upgrades, our revitalization is about adjusting our retail mix to mirror the expectations of our shoppers," Traynor said in a statement. "This means building on our roster of best-in-class brands, which includes much-sought-after premium and luxury retailers." Sherway Gardens’ final phase of redevelopment features esthetic and design upgrades, a full restoration of its iconic white "tent" roof, and re-merchandizing of 90,000 square feet of existing retail space. NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT FOR DETAIL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION Highway 427 Expansion

THE PROJECT

THE PROCESS

LINK427 has been selected by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) to undertake the design, build, finance and maintenance of the Highway 427 Expansion project within the City of Vaughan and the City of Toronto. The Highway 427 Transportation Corridor Environmental Assessment (EA) received approval from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) in November 2010. The project was updated through completion of a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) in 2016 to add additional lanes to the proposed Highway 427 extension. A separate TESR was completed in 2013 for the widening of existing Highway 427 between Albion Road to Highway 7.

This project is being carried out in accordance with the approved environmental planning process for projects under the MTO Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) and has now progressed to Detail Design.

The Highway 427 Expansion project includes the design and construction of the following: • A new 6.6 km extension from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive with: • eight lanes from Highway 7 to Rutherford Road; • six lanes from Rutherford Road to Major Mackenzie Drive; • three new interchanges (Langstaff Road, Rutherford Road and Major Mackenzie Drive); • new median High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. • A 4.0 km road widening from Finch Avenue to Highway 7: • from six to eight lanes between Finch Avenue to south of Steeles Avenue; • from four to eight lanes, from south of Steeles Avenue to Highway 7; • new median High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes.

Public Information Centres (PICs) will be held throughout the detailed design process to allow the public an opportunity to review and comment on project details. Design and Construction Reports (DCRs) will be prepared to document the Detail Design process, including environmental investigations, potential environmental effects, proposed mitigation measures, commitments to future work and monitoring. The DCRs will each be made available for a 30-day public and agency review period and notices will be published in local newspapers, on the Project website www.427expansion.ca and distributed by mail to those on the project contact list advising of the start of each review period and locations where each DCR will be available for review. COMMENTS We are interested in hearing any comments that you may have regarding this project. If you wish to obtain additional information, provide comments or sign up for the project mailing list please contact those listed below, or visit the project website at www.427expansion.ca.

A woman walks out to a new Toronto sign, that appeared several weeks ago in Humber Bay Park East. Friends, local artist Thelia Sanders Shelton and graphic designer Julie Ryan, made the sign out of six-foot tall driftwood letters after an incredible public response to the "150" driftwood sign they built with Thelia’s husband, Peter, for Canada Day.

A new "Toronto" sign this one made of six-feet-tall driftwood letters - animating the Toronto skyline continues to warm hearts, build community and draw crowds queuing to take selfies with it. "People are amazingly respectful and we’ve had such positive feedback from people who live in the area," said York graphic designer Julie Ryan, who created the sign with her best friend, Junction artist Thelia Sanders Shelton. Ryan and Sanders Shelton built the rustic, wooden ode to The Six over a week on a quay of boulders in the lake in Humber Bay Park East in Etobicoke. The sign has been up for three weeks. "The response has been overwhelming - in a wonderful way," Sanders Shelton said. "So many people said, ’thank you.’ It’s a total multicultural affair, with people from every background stopping. That’s so Torontonian. "It’s absolutely lovely." A recent Toronto and Region Conservation project to creatively use beached driftwood from recent torrential rainfalls in Bluffer’s Park Beach in Scarborough inspired the women to create their own driftwood public art installation clos-

er to home. It began with a "150" driftwood sign to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial. Helped by Sanders Shelton’s husband, Peter, the trio finished the "150" sign on Canada Day to queues of people waiting for a photo, celebrated on the beach, and watched the fireworks. A week later, the sign deteriorating, they deconstructed it, eager to build a new project. Sanders Shelton’s good friend, Susan B., stopped by with her camera: "’You guys should do the Toronto sign,’ she said. You know when you get a gut response when something feels like a good idea? We both had it. It’s beautiful," Sanders Shelton said. The second "Toronto" sign was born. "The background of the skyline is all straight lines so we liked the juxtaposition with the softness of the letters and the wood. We thought it was a beautiful idea," Sanders Shelton said. It soon became a community affair. Last Saturday night, Maurice watched from his nearby condominium window as the women raced against the setting sun to finish the sign. He and his dog dashed down to the shoreline. "We asked if he had a flashlight, and he did,"

Ryan said. "Then he came back with a spotlight, and held it for an hour until 10:30 p.m. so we could finish. Then he helped us carry our gear to our cars." Megan from Australia and her partner, Akio, from Brazil, stopped by to ask if they could help. For 45 minutes, the couple carried rocks with Ryan used to help wedge the letters upright into the quay’s boulders. The three are now Instagram friends. Liban, a man in his mid-20s who works in construction, walks to the "Toronto" sign every morning at 6 a.m. to ensure it remains secured; it is held together with drywall screws. Then he texts Ryan to give her a status report. A woman named Bev, who paints inspirational words on rocks and leaves them on the shoreline, stopped by daily to offer the women water, and to remind them to wear sunscreen. What began as friends having fun became unintentional community building. "We just did it for ourselves to have fun," Ryan said. "It was probably one of the best weeks of my life. It’s really uplifting and warm. It seems to be a special spot. It’s a very cheery, friendly neighbourhood."

Woodbine Centre collecting school supplies Give homeless youth a back-to-school head start next month by donating new school supplies. A little yellow school bus in Woodbine Centre’s centre court is collecting shoppers’ donations of new school supplies for homeless youth ages 16 to 24 enrolled in Youth Without Shelter’s Stay in School program. It is the ninth year Woodbine Centre has hosted its Countdown to Class! School Supplies Drive. "As the need in our community continues to grow, we’re asking for the public’s help," Chris Couch, Woodbine Centre’s marketing director, said in a statement. "During tough economic times, it can be difficult, but school supplies are an integral part of a student’s success. Our goal is to help children in our community get off to a great start this back-to-school season." Most-needed school supplies include: coloured Bristol boards; mechanical pencils; three-inch binders; scientific calculators; highlighters; USB sticks; whiteout; packages of pens, and combination locks. Donate now through Sept. 4. Visit www.woodbinemall.com for a full list of items. The first 100 customers to donate five or more school supplies will receive a two-for-

Learn about the City's proposed licensing, registration and zoning framework and share your thoughts.

Tuesday, September 19 Scarborough Civic Centre, Committee Room 1 150 Borough Drive, Scarborough Proposal The proposed City-wide zoning framework permits short-term rentals in the principal residence of an owner or tenant in residential and mixed use zones. A short-term rental can be the entire dwelling unit, a secondary suite (separate apartment unit in the same house) or up to three rooms rented for a period of no more than 28 consecutive days. Wanted: old editions, 100th birthdays, and wedding anniversaries The Etobicoke Guardian is marking its 100th year of news service in 2017 with a history that dates back to the Lakeshore Advertiser in 1917. We’re working on a commemorative project to celebrate, but need help from our readers. We’re looking for few things: Do you have copies of the Lakeshore Advertiser published prior to 1925? The Toronto Library Archives’ microfilm for the Advertiser only goes back to 1925. We’d love to see earlier editions if you have any hiding in your attic! Do we have anyone cele-

Tony Horton, creator of the P90X workout series, gave a talk and lead a workout during the Canfitpro event Friday, Aug. 18, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

P90X creator Tony Horton talks fitness at canfitpro

insidetoronto.com

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com It’s a Friday morning, and the foyer of Metro Toronto Convention Centre is buzzing with anticipation. The crowd slowly makes its way up the escalator and assembles inside an auditorium where fitness guru Tony Horton is set to take the stage to give the keynote address at the 24th annual canfitpro world fitness expo. Wearing a grey collared short-sleeved shirt and black pants, the 59-year-old creator of the uber-popular P90X fitness program walks out to the applause of 5,000 attendees, where he’ll spend the next 40 minutes telling the story of overcoming bullying and a speech impediment to build a fitness empire that includes workouts, books, a T-shirt line, and a hair and skincare line. He’s also working on a new book tiled Food First. In 1980, he moved to California with a friend and took work as a stand-up comedian, an errand runner at 20th Century Fox, and a Chippendales go-go dancer while struggling to make ends meet. He joined a gym, and began to train a

boss at Fox for $25 a session. That lead to a phone call from Tom Petty, who was heading out on tour and wanted to get into shape. Clients Billy Idol, Annie Lennox and Bruce Springsteen soon followed. Horton was then introduced to Carl Daikeler, chairman and CEO of Beachbody, and recorded the Great Body Guaranteed! workout. Power 90 followed, along with P90X, P90X2, P90X3, 10 Minute Trainer, and Horton’s most recent workout program, 22 Minute Hard Corps. Horton shared his laws for living large with the crowd at canfitpro, a fitness conference and trade show boasting more than 300 nutrition, wellness, and fitness sessions presented by some 200 international experts last week. Using humour mixed with tough love, Horton preached about the importance of variety, consistency, and intensity - "You train all the time," he said to planning and prioritizing, noting life should be about "joy, happiness, and laughter". A one-size-fits-all approach to fitness is something Horton is well aware doesn’t work, and that’s

why his programs are so diverse. "My sole purpose was preventing excuses," he later told Metroland Media Toronto of the process that went into creating his workouts. "10 Minute Trainer is for people who hate exercise. What I’m trying to do is give people options." With less than a year to go before he turns 60, Horton said he values speed, balance and range of motion above all else when it comes to his fitness plan. "In this industry, especially for men, it’s a lot of let’s see how big we can get," he said. "I’m on the 23rd day of this vegan thing, and I’ve lost 10 pounds. I feel better in my own skin; I sleep better. It is weird to look down (at the scale) and see 168 (pounds). I’m more muscular and leaner now, but I can still crank out a bunch of pullups." He trains six days a week (he takes Saturdays off) with a minimum of 40minute sessions broken up into upper, lower, and cardio workouts. It might seem like a brutal schedule, but at the core of it, Horton has just one priority: "to move today".

5 simple tips for an outrageously stylish home We all want a gorgeous, well pulled together home that’s both relaxing and polished. Learn how to achieve this with these easy interior design tips that’ll create a timeless finish.

high-traffic zones like the kitchen that tend to get messy quickly. Only keep things that bring you joy and comfort or are necessary essentials — keep everything else stored and tucked away out of site in attractive storage like woven baskets or crisp ottomans.

1. Coordinate elements. Keep things fashionable by mixing prints and materials in pillows and upholstery. For a cohesive look that feels fresh and current by tying everything together with a simple colour palette.

Real Estate 4. Make a statement. Use larger eyecatching accessories to create an impact and focal point, instead of a bunch of smaller items that can end up adding clutter. Think a stately vintage mirror, a gallery wall or an oversized couch.

2. Love your lighting. Filling your home with gorgeous functional items can only go so far if you don’t have the right lighting to flatter and display them. Silhouette shadings from Hunter Douglas let you transform harsh exterior light by diffusing it, spreading it evenly throughout your space so you can maximize daylight hours and reduce your need for artificial light.

5. Get smart. Today’s homes benefit from sleek design featuring top technology. Imagine being able to schedule your shades to open and close with your local sunset and sunrise, or a fridge that snaps a pic of what’s inside every time it closes. Incorporate these surprisingly affordable features into your home and hook them up to your smart devices for maximum luxury and convenience.

3. Edit ruthlessly. Allow your style to shine by eliminating clutter, especially in

Rising soccer star set to take on world Eleven-year-old Etobicoke resident Ethan Agyare-Danso, who plays for the Woodbridge Soccer Club, has achieved star status in the local U12 soccer community - and he’s now set to take on the world. Ethan has been selected for the team that will represent Canada at the Danone Nations Cup world final, taking place in New York this September. Initiated by Danone in 1999, the Danone Nations Cup is the world’s biggest soccer tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12. Since its first edition, the international competition has given hundreds of Canadian children the opportunity to represent their country on the world stage. Thousands of young Canadians participate in the program’s selection process every year, with players evaluated based on both exceptional playing skills and team spirit. Having played soccer ever since he could walk, Ethan is described by his moth-

EthanAgyare-Danso er as a "very intelligent young boy who is intuitive and observant. He is known as having great leadership among his peers, yet he always remains humble." Dean Howie, head coach of Danone Nations Cup in Canada, believes the tournament experience will be a milestone in Ethan’s playing career. "The Danone Nations Cup is a unique opportunity for young soccer stars to play on the international stage," he said. "We are thrilled to support the 2017 Danone Nations Cup in Canada, an event that promotes fair

play and encourages young people to lead healthy, active lifestyles," added Natacha Gouveia, head of external communications for Danone Canada. "Initiatives like the Danone Nations Cup are reflective of DanoneWave Canada’s efforts to lead an Alimentation Revolution, with the ambitious goal of protecting and nourishing the health of people and the planet." The 2017 Danone Nations Cup World Final takes place at Red Bull Arena, located just outside of New York City, on Sept. 24.

Ontario Place seeks winter light sculptures Do you know the perfect way to capture Ontario’s natural winter landscape in art form? Well, now’s your chance to share it with Torontonians. Ontario Place is accepting submissions for its Winter Light Exhibition, taking place from December 2017 to March 2018. The theme is Winter Light, in hopes to mimic Ontario’s wintery landscape of brisk wind, ice and extreme temperatures. Ontario Place is looking for sculptures that project, shape, transmit, reflect or contain light. Artists from all art forms are allowed to submit new or pre-existing pieces in varying styles and sizes; they are encouraged to explore and combine unconventional materials and methods that respond to light in different ways.

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

5 foods to try at The Ex

43 | Etobicoke Guardian | Thursday, August 24, 2017

We sent our team to the CNE to taste dozens of strange foods to inform you what’s worth your growing waistline SOUTHERN SLANG – This writer’s favourite dish at the festival, the Southern Slang is a thing of beauty - buttermilk chicken on a cinnamon sweet bun topped with housemade coleslaw and chocolate Srirach sauce. (Fran’s Restaurant, Food Building)

1 2

CANADIAN BACON PICKLE BALL – Coco Concessions is serving up something new this year, deep fried chicken feet. Skip them. But go back for last year’s goody, Canadian Bacon Pickle Ball - a hot dog inside a pickle, wrapped in bacon and batter, all deep-fried. (Coco Concessions, Midway)

3

THE COLOSSAL COLISEUM – This sandwich is too large for one person, but if it’s tackled by a team (at least four people), then this breaded veal and pulled pork panzerotti on a Kaiser bun with a slew of toppings is a great dish. (San Francesco’s Italian Sandwiches, Food Building)

4

DEEP FRIED CHEESE CURDS – The King of Curds is offering three flavours of deep fried cheese curds. It’s not a meal. It’s more of a snack between meals, one that’s packed with flavour and goes down quick. (The King of Curds, Midway)

PANCAKE BACON TACOS – All-day breakfast has arrived at the CNE. This creation features buttermilk pancakes stuffed with fried and scrambled eggs, tomato, green pepper, onion, maple bacon strips and chipotle syrup. It’s delicious no matter what time of day it is. (Bacon Nation, Food Building)

44 HISTORY

The Gardhouse family ran a prizewinning livestock business DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca The John Gardhouse family arrived in Canada from England in 1837 and developed a family business in Etobicoke importing and breeding livestock. This enterprise became famous across North America and would go on to provide a livelihood for five generations of this family. John Gardhouse settled in Etobicoke with his wife Isabella and their five children. John’s younger brother, Robert, had married Isabella’s sister, Mary, and they had moved to Etobicoke in 1826. Robert owned 93 hectares of land spread over three lots north of today’s Rexdale Boulevard, on the western edge of Etobicoke. Robert sold all of his land to John but continued to live on the farm until he died in 1857. John became more and more interested in breed-

ing and showing livestock. He started by showing Shorthorn cattle at larger agricultural fairs. Encouraged by his wins, he imported the best stock he could afford from England: Shire heavy horses, longwooled Cotswold sheep and Berkshire pigs. John’s eldest son, James, joined his father in the business, eventually taking over as manager a few years before John died in 1873. James married his schoolyard sweetheart, Ann Stobbart, and they had 14 children, only eight of whom lived to adulthood. In 1863, they built a large new home on the north side of Rexdale Boulevard, west of Humberwood Boulevard. Named "Rosedale," the house had 10 rooms, wide verandas, white pillars, ornate brickwork and gingerbread trim, as seen in the above photo. The house was a local landmark for 100 years.

James continued to improve his livestock, earning accolades such as this one from the Hon. David Marshall: "James Gardhouse took charge of his Rosedale Farm and laid the foundations of the breeding operations, which probably were more extensive and of greater variety than that of any other Canadian farmer." In 1876, James bought 60 additional hectares of land to house his herds. James’ sons, John and James Martin (called "Mart"), joined their father in his business. In 1887, they won never-before presented awards at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition for the best imported draught stallion and five progeny and for the best Shorthorn bull and four females. James retired to a house in Toronto, leaving the business and "Rosedale" to his son, Mart. He won many championships during his ca-

reer, but was most proud of earning the grand championship for the best ram and ewe at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Mart’s two sons, Leslie and Fred, joined his business from 1916 until Rosedale was sold in 1937. They then moved to separate farms nearby and continued the business. There are many more Gardhouses who were in the family livestock trade than I can fit into this column. For more information about this family, you can find a whole chapter on the Gardhouses in the book Etobicoke: From Furrow to Borough by Esther Hayes, available in many branches of the Toronto Public Library. Denise Harris is the Historian for the Etobicoke Historical Society. Her column appears every second Thursday. Reach her at denise.harris@sympatico.ca.
